carnifex, you'll do alot better if you also use larger brushes, instead of just scribbling it in with a pixelbrush. There's no rush :)
hope this doesn't come off as rude, and I hope it helps :)

Hi everyone, I'm new to concept art, and a total n00b when it comes to using my tablet, this is my first entry into the DSG.

I haven't drawn a horse since I was around 11 years old! The back legs always messed me up then, and are still trouble now. Sloppy planning, I ended up not fitting it all into my sketchbook. And I guess it's kinda light armor... :p

~35 minutes, pencil and ink. Those thingies on the front hooves are for tearing/poking, I suppose it's trained as a war horse. Didn't want to make them so long they would get in the way of running, though.

Cool rendering, MGH. Very menacing.

I went with more of the interpretation that the horse itself is heavy, rather than the armor, per se. After all, the "Heavy Horse" was a staple of Europe for centuries, y'know?
The temptation to draw a man in a suit of heavy "HORSE" powered armor was, I admit, hard to resist...
Anyway...

Inspired by the barding of the late middle ages, a combination of plate and chain, including blinding rims for the horse's eyes, and a fluted chestplate to provide more protection for the rider's legs. The saddle's been omitted, obviously. That access point for the belting of the rump-plate's going to cause problems later...
-Minor edit... not bad for a guy who hasn't drawn a horse since his Life Drawing class, eh?-

I got a little too involved into this project. I did some research on horses, and then I did some research on old horse armor, just like jem, but I found some cool plate for horses. This is the first horse I've drawn in like 10 years.
As for the tech, I figure it's an android battle horse. Built to withstand any battle condition. It has filtered breathing, the spikes on it's hooves and the horn on it's head (combigned with the enhanced neck) make it a formidable opponent on it's own. For the rider it has a sword for close quarters... though I'm sure on this ride, they'd be carring some sort of blaster ray or something.
I also added a boarder so that I'll never forget what I do this for. (And it looks cool!)
I liked this project. :)

Ooh, where'd you find references on the hinged plates for the chest and shoulders of the thing? I was only able to find references to hinged neck and rump armor... all the other armors I found had solid plates for the chest and head, and never anything for the legs or fetlocks...
And now I really want to do up that "HORSE" armor I mentioned earlier...
I like!

Never underestimate the power to google's image search.
[edit] Or artists' license. The chest plate was of my own design, simplistic as it is, I just took the formal design and transmuted it into plate. As for the fetlocks' armor it just looked cool, mine are attatched to the horse itslelf... I don't think they would be practical on a "real" horse because it would slow it down. If you look at most old horse armor there is on the leg is the skirt itself and that's all.

My first hit on the DSG. Didn't have much time tonight so I did a sort of speed painting. And someone already beat me to the "all robot" horse, but oh well.
Sorta embarassing posting this here, but I gotta start drawing more often.

Eh I got carried away and went a bit off topic... never got around to giving him armor :|
I might work on it more, I kinda like it.
Alot to fix though. I dont like the head position, the left leg looks goofy, the axe is angled wrong, and the left arm should be a little more visible (all you can see is the hand). Not to mention everything is misproportion :). Oh well. first time I've done anything horse related, and haven't done anatomy in awhile.

Apologies for the lateness of this. I had it started yesterday but couldn't finish. Nice topic. :) I can't pass up an opportunity to draw a horse.
