Yeah, you're doing the art still. I like your acrylics, they have a nice palette in them. In your paintings your colorcoice sometimes feels kind of random though. Espescially the latest speedies seem somewhat rushed and without the intention to create an illusion at all. The ideas are nice, though.

Thanks all!
I think I'll keep myself from posting for awhile, I find it somewhat demotivating, it seems as if I am going downhill if there is anything true in the vote sytem, as most of the votes I've gotten recently have either been terrible or bad, and there is only so much beating a person can take :l Checking back on my sketchbook I can honestly say that there is less progress than there is loss of individuality and method, everytime I post I wish maybe I've been done better this time, but honestly all I've done is put myself in a small cube and kept myself from experimenting with new things, and only copying the old. :-\
I will try my best to keep on with the studies! :)
trying photoshop out before bed, also tried to do somekind of oversized-arm thing which failed miserably (I've been trying to stufy arms, hard for me :-\)

hey man, i think you're doing great but i'll say that you need to focus more on the basics, anatomy, gesture and proportions and draw and paint from life, start to assimilate more, add more baggage to your art. It's cool that you want to explore stuff but i mix it up with practice, sketching, doodles, find your own voice. Also and very important, learn to see what works and what's not, be very critical with your drawings and fix your mistakes as you go. That's one thing i value from this site, the amount of different approaches and styles i got to see in one place and the amount of information about certain stuff i want to incorporate in mine.
Well, just keep it up man, keep at your drawings and studies and don't give up. :)
Lakka
November 6th, 2008, 11:36 PM
The thing is, I do sketch alot, and paint from life, I am selfcritical if not overly-unhappy with everything I produce, and yet it seems like it does not show in the things I post here.
I have been using up 1-2moleskines a month with a pen, anatomy studies a few times a week, less than I should anyway, and painting from life occasionally with acrylics.
I did attempt to study anatomy, paint allkinds of things, and sketch before I joined here, but after joining it has built up stress in time, giving me a feeling like I cannot improve, so I attempt to work tightly and neatly without any sense of experimentation, so I wouldn't "fail", and in the end this is exactly what happens.
It might just be that I'm somewhat weak mentally, but that's partly the reason why I'm going to pursue this art business, instead of something more science oriented, so I'm just going to take the good with the bad. :sungod:
This is more of just trying to see what works for me best. If this doesn't work out, I'll just start posting again :yayca:
I think I will just try to work alot, and not think about posting, and maybe I will finish something bigger which would work for my advantage when growing, as in posting dumps once a month with small clippets, I shall try this out. CA is pretty much the only place for support and critique for me, and good at that.

you really are doing better lakka, don't fall to the bad votes and all that though, stay strong! Everyone gets frustrated (pain is most of the word painter after all, that didn't come from me btw), but if you shift your focus from outputs to having fun and fascination with learning, you will certainly go places with your art!

Hey thanks mate, I'd rather not have any votes on my thread thus I just went ahead and voted for terrible and got a few folks to vote terrible for me, just let the ones who are interested in helping look in the thread and not the people who are just strolling around for eyecandy and coming up with "yeah it looks like it's goooood" :D Enough of that going around on DA!
Though I've got to admit, the lack of comments really shines though after doing this, which makes me think.... ~_~

sup Lakka, thanks for stopping by SB! I enjoy looking at your speedpaints over at the sijun forum. I like how you not afraid to use saturated colors, while many of the other speedpaints have this very low usage of saturation including myself. It's like Sargent says 'u ain't painting unless u apply lots of paint onto the canvas'!
keep them cool speedies coming, also great work on that last character, looks like this one is going to reach the finish line?

I tried to make it seem like the far end had a palace of sorts, and then in the middle there'd be a marketplace, and a bit further from there, the "dark" part of the image, an area where life is hard, with little money. I am glad the feelings came through!

Apart from not looking like the reference, I think the face is also distorted, must try and sort that out.
Did a very sloppy coloration, painter crashed at a bad point and there's no way in hell the "recovery" thing could work.

That last portrait looks great with those spots of color in the eyes and lips--gives the muted color in the rest of it some 'pop'. The eyes especially--in all the paintings--are striking. Are you going to keep going with it?

Maridius, I did get one tip I might try on it, and maybe try to experiment with something I havn't done before, but should learn to do. Thanks for you comment! :sungod:
Anyhoo, crappy speedpainting inc, didn't have time for much, just needed to try something before bed.

Hey, thanks for the comments you two! :)
Been busy for awhile, now I am very stressed out because I need to do math, but I have this wierd tickling sensation around my left temple (inside my head, maybe allergies or my jaw, or my wisdom teeth, or all of these combined +stress, who know :-\ ). I have had it for a few weeks, most intense these past days, if this goes on I'll go crazy. I keep forgetting things I normally wouldnt since I'm not really even paying attention to what I'm doing, as I'm just ealing with this itch thing.
Phil, indeed these have been done in painter, Glad you liked them!
Kfeeras, I reaaaally like painter, the only thing that bothers me at times is how heavy it can be to my computer, especially some of the more "complicated" brushes. Can't really get a painting feel when you have to wait and see what you did before doing more :D
Anyways, glad you like the images, they were the a part of preliminary works for one schoolapp, I hope I hear something back.
Here's something else I did for the same thing, traditionals I havn't posted before I think. 2 old ones and 1 newish

Love the portrait of the girl man you've come so far with faces its awesome. Probably would have been better not to make the background the same color as her hair unless that's what you were going for. Other wise its freaking awesome. haha, acutally he wasnt supposed to be sitting down, but I and others like you have noticed that it certainly looks that way.
I draw with a wise gamut monitor, and on this one I can see the difference with his butt and the landscape, but with my old 17" CRT, it isnt quite the case.
Anyhoo, he was supposed to be leaning in to the attack and using his leggs to take the force. Keeping himself nice and compact :P
may have to try and fix that as I come back, already had someone make me a paintover, so I'll see if I can work it out at all!

hey man you have some good work here. I like that you've been playing around with the different settings on photoshop, keep at it! one thing i would suggest is that you not over-saturate your colors, I'm seeing this in many of you pantings and you only need to emphasize the focal points. I am liking the recent figure studies, your pretty damn good at showing people's characteristics. hope to see more soon :)

I really like your stuff here because of your use of colors and contrasts. your palettes feel dreamy and interesting. however, many of your sketches feels flat and needs more defined room. I also look at many of the poses and get an impression that you need some anatomy studies and life drawing etc. Nail that, and your SB will blow us away :D

thanks for your comment, eparts.
I feel like I will have to make some B/W images to try and define forms and depth better, must get on that tommorrow, otherwise it'll stay undone :p
My knowledge in anatomy is very lacking indeed, maybe I should take a round of posemaniacs while waiting for some life drawing in the future, or take a trip outside with a sketchbook :)
anyway, 20mins while waiting for coachpotatoin'

You've got some really great stuff in this sketchbook! but there seems to be a few anatomical flaws on your latest one. I find there are a bit too long between the shoulders and the head. Also the right hand looks a bit too large. Look through some bridgeman and you can fix it in no time :)

I'm guessing you mean his left palm is big? True that! Right now his thumb is huge and he isn'ta actually holding on to the flag, which looks pretty akward
I tried to make him have this arrow type form at the shoulders/head, but I guess it won't do it for people :l

You have a really keen sense of color.
I noticed that at the beginning of your SB, the compositions weren't as strong... that's something that's gotten much much stronger by the end of this thread. Before you'd just put a character in the dead center of the canvas... now you're creating better compositions.
Keep going! Those paints and digis look great

Yeah I used to compress alot but I dont really notice anything myself right now (I upgraded my own connection tenfolds speedwise). I'll try to remember that there might even be that one clueless person every now and then visiting this thread, one that is now me atleast.

kostas, thanks for the motivation, I think I will keep trying to figure PS out for awhile, so things will be atleast a bit different :D
Bendragon, definately ;) Mind pointing the pixelation thing out? like a paintover or something. (I am new to the lasso tool so you most likely are hitting the spot here)
PS, had the wacom plugged in, it doesn't really help me too much for some reason, I think I just think less and draw worse when I'm using it, I guess it has it's upsides and downsides like everything :p

Very cool work!
But why do you always post so many versions of the image? I feel like you should be doing that kind of experimentation in the thumbnail/early stages and find the best one, and then work that one up knowing it's the best option for what you are trying to convey with the piece.
Just my thoughts! :D
