So I have had this book on how to draw comic characters and what not, and I was wondering does everyone on here actually do the circles and lines for their body base? Or do they just jump into the figure, also do they do the same thing when digitally painting or drawing? I would appriciate your time to answer as it would help me out greatly, thanks all:anime:

Everyone starts out different.

and different for every character/scene.

Try lots of ways of drawing and find what works for you.

Also, Drawing Comics the Marvel Way. Yes. I know thats the book youre talking about. Oh yes.

Ho hum.

I use circles and sticks for poses I'm very comfortable drawing. For more convoluted poses with odd foreshortening or action, I'll sometimes use the clunkier 'block' method to make sure things don't get gooey. Boxes are easy to throw into perspective. When taking a pose from reference or a long life pose, I'll usually put in big flat shapes to check out the overall sizing and cut into those until I whittle out my angles/proportions and run from there.

I always use something or another. To me, the question is like asking, "Do you use scaffolding when building a highrise?"

It's easy to lose sight of the proportion and composition if you just jump into drawing the details. Don't think of circles, sticks and boxes as "I have to draw these perfectly round/boxed/straight," or that you need to use every one, but more of a quick guideline to where you're going. The more you learn about volume and shape, the more you will start to use these underlying "guidelines" without thinking.

I def. do, and I always start all my work with traditional media (pecils, pens, markers, etc.) then scan it in to work digitally. In my oppinion doing everything digitally stiffens an artist up way too much and sterilizes the final image. Such steril images lack the warmth and soul that I like seeing, and as such I try to avoid making them.

Anyone that had some kind of traditional animation training always work with shapes and then works inward towards detailing.
People who go straight into figure are either inexperienced or anatomy specialists.

Personally, I was "re-taught" how to draw when I went into anim. I envy the skills of Wes and Marko but am not experienced/practiced enough to work the way they do. Yet. ;)
