ADDITIONAL INFO

1. We are looking for a creature, which evolved over thousands, millions of years to a perfect hunting and killing machine.

2. It even can hunt down the Predator from the movies, which is actually a race that is optimized for hunting other creatures.

3. HELL, it's the PREDATOR PREDATOR!!!

4. No individual/character!!! Make a concept of a species! Watch out to avoid humanoid races and avoid giving it weapons or other technical stuff!

Ok, i admit, i recently watched Alien vs Predator and Predator 2, they just were too long on my "To watch" list ;) :perv:

this sounds cool, but isn't there already such a creature? Alien :) as much as i like the design of this creature, i hope alien wont be a major influence here, it should be interesting to see how everyone tries to keep away from the obvious cliche'. it'll also be nice if everyone keeps away from the obvious underground tenticle trap thingy to, which often appears in these types of projects. :)

I'm thinkin' my design will have to be naturally airborne. It's the one thing neither the Predator nor the Alien can do naturally. (At least in the movies... I think once upon a time there was a winged Alien action figure or two, but they were kinda silly designs.)

It'll have to be fairly smart as well... not just something that smooshes everything humanoid sized because its huge.

I think the thing to keep in mind is that there are plenty of predators that eat other predators. Think about all the insect predators that eat other insects but then of course lizards and frogs eat the insect predators. That would be a predator predator. Everything preys on something in this world. Now the key here is Fozz's description of " perfect hunting and killing machine." So I think he is looking for the ultimate predatory creature. Not just a creature that is the apex predator of its environment or of a certain continent or even of a whole planet. No, in this case I believe the idea is to create the peak predatory organism in existence. Nothing escapes this thing. Should be a fun topic, already have some ideas floating around about it.

Okay, I have an idea, oddly enough inspired by my girlfriend (she generally just laughs when I talk about COW). My "perfect" predator is a vulnerable and even a bit cute looking creature with a "surprise inside." Predators would think it was prey and when they came close . . . ATTACK!!!!!

SHOTGUN VIRUSES!!

phew! I wanna come at it from a different angle is the answer here. I mean, look what wikipedia says (I <3 unreliable information)

"Prevention and treatment"

"Because viruses use the machinery of a host cell to reproduce and reside within them, they are difficult to eliminate without killing the host cell. The most effective medical approaches to viral diseases so far are vaccinations to provide resistance to infection, and antiviral drugs which treat the symptoms of viral infections."

I mean... what kind of predator could withstand a virus that say... made it melt, into a puddle of virusey soup, and then that spread by attracting other animals, it could have a symbiotic relationship with birds? so it spread fast.

oh wait... it could release gasses in the subject's intestinal tract to make them a-splode.

I would also like to make it clear I have watched both 28 days later and 28 weeks later recently.

Tyrus
April 19th, 2008, 06:29 PM
Sweet idea J.Boswell, but to be a creature it would have to be a parasite or something not a virus, as some people don't even accept viruses as true organisms. Very sweet potential, though. Good Luck.:teeth:

Plus: Viruses seem hard to draw their just RNA or something like that right?

There is a very clear mental distinction between a predator and the extreme killing potential of an "invisible gaseous-, black hole-, lethal virus-, hypnotizing-, ethereal molecule-warping, imploding-blood-boiling-creature" that one never even sees before meeting instant death. I'd like to see some nice predators here, not a flying tiny needle of death. That is, I'd like to see a predator that really looks f...ing predatory! Now, what Fozz and the voters would like to see might be something else entirely... these are just my thoughts.

The idea must be expressed/translated/work properly as an image.... in my humble opinion. Hopefully there will be some nice stuff this round. I think it is quite a challenging topic. Good luck!

Hyptosis
April 19th, 2008, 11:35 PM
Artist: Hyptosis

Concept: Drydian Forst Stalker

These creatures were bred by deep forest dryads for use in defending the animals of their groves. Stalker's very specifically hunt out poachers and trespassing hunters and dispatch them.

The long teeth were originally used for attracting female mates, however this semi domestic version no longer needs to rely on them in their controlled breeding program. Some older, wild breeds will have far larger fangs but will otherwise be slightly smaller in general.

I know, not the most original, but I gotta try and do more mammals. I need the fur practice. ^_^

Tyrus, ya it impales the cow then impregnates it, getting 2 meals. The poison also stiffens the cows joints/nervous system, which makes it stand straight up as it does.

Everyone designing this creature: I'm seeing a lot of people taking the route of making a creature with just more muscles and brute power over known predators. I just have to ask, what makes it so the creature you are designing go specifically after predators? What skill does it have suited for predator-hunting that it couldn't just use on common prey?

This topic worried me from the start because 80% of creature designs could almost be marked as something that could kill a predator.

So guys, try thinking about specifics? How could one up a specific predator? With the idea of the PREDATOR™ from the movies, the design could be based on sensory camouflage's so the PREDATOR™ could not detect him. What about a predator that evolved to exploit the Tyrannosaurus Rexs' flaws? The T Rex has the weakness of rotation speed, eye sight and balance.. so how can you design a creature specificlly take advantage of these flaws, instead of just desinging an uber t-rex with more muscle/claws/teeth?

I don't mean to be elitest with my ideas, but i think this topic can be truly imaginative or very cliche based on the effort people put into thinking "outside the box"

Cloister
April 20th, 2008, 01:28 PM
Yes, there are many ways to think about this topic... but what works best visually is usually what is wanted. There is certainly a lot of muscle-power-creatures out there, but that is also what makes doing another one so challanging. What is our idea of the archetypical predator?.. and what does the predator-predator really look like? Adding special powers is pretty easy imo, but making a visually interesting predator is artistically demanding...

Anyway, this is my entry so far. Perhaps I'll do some more work on it. I imagine this creature to have a lot of senses beyond the human five, but I'm not very keen on describing them. I'd like to think of them as unearthly and beyond our understanding. I think that give the muscles some darkness and soul. Grrr.. ;)

I think you're dead on davi.

I personally took the description to mean literaly a predator of the Predator race from the movies. I'll include descriptions/notes with mine later today (I hope), but in brief, if you take a look at the head structure you see a whole bunch of eye like sensory organs there (above the actual eye), along with extra nostrils. My thoughts for this were that this animal should be able to see not only in visible light, but also in ultraviolet and infrared, not to mention having extremely sensitive olfactory sense.

Oh, and you are elitist, davi :P

All the best,

I agree with everything you've said here
You have a nice design and everything but to me it is screaming more almost parasite-esque. It could be a predator if you make it hunting for a prey and instead of waiting for a victim, what you have described in your text is just a worm with a defense mechanism if someone eats it.

draconas
April 20th, 2008, 05:32 PM
Cloister maybe one of the senses would allow it to know all possibilities and outcomes so it could kick a rock which would eventually end up with a herd of cows with broken legs as easy prey for it

Hyptosis
April 20th, 2008, 05:46 PM
I thought we were joking about something that would kill the predator from the movies. Plus, I'm not ashamed to admit my mind was dry on this idea for some reason. A predator is something that feeds on something else right? I thought about having a creature which tricks a predator, not from the movies, into eating it, then it eats it from the inside out or something, but that seems more like a parasite to me.

This is a really interesting topic... I've been wanting to get in to a Cow, so i might try my hand at this one. I've had a few ideas floating around in my head since i first heard the topic... I'll try and post some sketches.

Cloister
April 21st, 2008, 12:11 AM
Candras: The head of your creature is "hidden" within the larger form of the body, which makes it tricky to describe depth and volume. One can increase contrasts and saturation in the front and decrease those further off to heighten the sense of depth. A shadow from the creature on the ground could also do some good. If the outlines are going to vary in width try using broader lines on the most important parts. Right now it looks a little random, and all the equal density throughout flattens the creature.

arteater: thanks!

sv: congrats!

oregano: Nice drawing. The 'on his knees'-pose makes it look a little "defeated" imo, but nice nevertheless.

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a379/neorepto/PREDATORPREDATORWIP.jpg

I took this rather... literally....

My Predator Predator is actually a training tool for young Predators. The young ones have to train in the forests of their native world before they get to go off-world on a real hunt for Aliens or humans. Those that fail... well, they get carried off by these creatures the Predators call "Floating Blades." The double bladed weapon Predators carry is actually inspired by this creature's tail.

Thanks much Lege1. Posted what I think will be the final in the finals thread. A few changes but nothing huge.

Here's my WIP... Been struggling alot with the digital painting, still can't seem to get a handle on it. I've been going crazy slow on it. But at least it's great practice!

I do have the original Predator movie playing in the background right now... perhaps it will guide me... I just got to the point where the Predator can't see Arnie, cuz he's covered in mud. Hmm.

You know - its not that stupid. The predator is using thermovision, and if it works the same as a thermovision camera, then it can only see the outer layer of an object. So if Arnie was covered in mud, then it could only see the temperature of this mud.

Sorry for an offtopic - i'm an engineer by trade ;)

Here's an update.. I'm not sure if I can finnish this.. It's just that I have to write a speach for tommorow, and I really have to work on that speach.. ah well, no worries! :)

I know it's pretty much dark over-all, but havn't added any adjustment layers yet.

update just some more refining.. one third done now! and I've got no clue to what I'm doing.. anyway, I might even make it for tommorow.

I'd just like to say good luck to everyone who's finnished so far, and to those who are still rushing things... Oh, and Michael Jaecks, yours is really cool!

That's quite interesting. I didn't know that's how those cameras worked. I thought they registered total body temperature, which of course doesn't go down just because you're covered in mud. It also explains why it didn't seem to bother him that the mud dried as he worked on his numerous predator traps.

The one thing about the original Predator that bothers me is how poor his vision gets when the visor comes off. Its really just a red blob on a red field. Although its a sense others cant sense, it does lack clarity, which I sort of thought was the point of a (earthly) predators vision...bifocal vision for depth, color vision, sharpness...

I've now begun to think too much about the science-y parts, as is often the case. Ah well.

Good stuff so far guys.

ArtEater: Scary. Never was a fan of the Starbucks.
Cloister: Slightly confusing, but really f'n scary nonetheless! Deserves to be on the top of that foodchain.
MJ: Great concept, killer creature and downright makes sense to me. Except for the mouth area. Love the Tail/Weapon reference.
Mayk: Nice to see you in the COW. Love your stuff.
Davi: Excellent concept and drawing. My only question is, what hunts cows? (That's a serious question by the way). Great colors.
Oregano: The pencils looked awesome, but the comp. and color in the final takes away from the original drawing.
Here's mine. Kind of last minute as usual, but always appreciate the advice.
Supposed to be a vampiric beast of some kind that feeds on saber tooth cats.
Hooray for stupid ideas!>:D :D

Oooooh c'mon now. A pointy underbite is always sexy. ;) The rendering on your guy's lower extremities looks very nice.

Yeah sorta.. actually the plates on the back is it's armor, and they are used to conceal the weaker body. The idea behind it is that it hides within the armor, and in an instant, thrusts open the sheltering bodyplate and slashes out with the 4 arms, litterly obliterating it's foe.

I don't have time to finnish this piece, but i had in mind making some smaller concept picutres of the creature in it's defensive state.

I know I'm late to the show but here are some comments.

Davi: That looks great! Now I'm afraid to walk barefoot.

abigbat: hahaha. well done. You should email that to him.

Oregano: It's beautiful and frightening. I hope you color it!

Cloister: Amazing looking. Love the eye(?) placements!

Candras: Good start. I think you have alot of busy texture in there that isn't helping define the individual body parts. You might still benefit from clarifying the depth and form of the creature before dealing with the color variations.

Tommoy: Nice! psychotic alien pitbull!

Michael Jaecks balloony but still very deadly. nice reach on that tail.

Arteater good and ferocious. That thing has had too much caffeine!

Mayk: Brutal! Your lighting, pose and layout kick ass

fury03: I like your design but it doesn't look dangerous enough to take down a Predator.

Scorge: well done. it's packed with furry fury.
