Hello!
My name is Emmy and this is my sketchbook. When I started this I was 19. Time has passed!
I am now a working concept artist at Coffee Stain Studios, Sweden. I'm currently creating concept and promotional art for the game Sanctum (and Sanctum 2) I've studied videogame graphics at uni for 3 years and a bit of animation before that. I'm mostly self taught and taught by good friends though. This is where I dump my artwork and where you can witness my personal progression!

I started this painting yesturday. My goal is to finish a painting without an lineart, since I've never done that evah.. Well, this is just the beginning and I'll be reconstructing most of her face.. I'll post my progress if I can and if you have something to say about it, I appriciate it loads.

Hey Fira, sup ;)
This sure looks different in comparison to some of your older stuff that I remember from our WoW time :D I like the way you are going with this stuff, could end very interesting.
One comment would be to work on your underlying shapes, in some of them the interlocking simply doesnt work that great, and it feels like certain bodyparts get dislocated.
Keep updating!
ps: Thargas ;)

Woo, Thargas! O__O Long time no see see..
You are definitly right. I am taking life drawing classes after summer and I can't wait.. I try to study anatomy on my own from books y'know but it's not as good as the real thing. I don't have the skills yet to match what I want to do and therefor things end up looking rather odd sometimes. I'll keep practicing. :3
Nice seeing you here! I like your sketchbook loads!

I really like your character designs. "Domi" and "domi2" in post 2 are very nice.
Keep sharing,

Hi Quinn! I'm glad you like those two. They were experiments I made while being really frustrated with facial expressions not coming through as I wanted them to. :)
Here is an update with three more pics.

May 3rd, 2008, 03:15 PM
Okay.. new update.
1. Some cupcakes I designed to be put on a t-shirt or a top.
2. Random sketch trying on a new angle of the head..
3. Practicing a new colouring tecnique and two characters interacting.. The background is totally off, I have to practice my perspective-skills.. O__o I have none at the moment.
4. Character design for the chick in the third pic.

you know that I really dig your style hun and your characters are really getting some personality now. The new colouring technique is really clean and interesting though I would love to see some more colours incorporated into it.
Your anatomy could use some work in general but it is getting there. You are improving tons hun!
Cheers and keep rocking.

Utopia: :D Thankees! I'll try to produce more things to post in the nearest future.
nasheer: I'm glad you like my lineart, :) It's my favourite thing of all, playing with lines.
Isobel: haha, I guess I just love that tiny look, but I'll try to bring some more flesh onto my gals..

Hi!
Nice sketchbook. I find your first things, with the girl character very french comic style, I really appreciated it. The goblin on WIP didn't enthusiasm me too much. I really believe you could keep your style and use it for the goblin :D
keep here updated, please!

oooh, I'm glad I stumbled in here:) love all the sketches, you have a really nice line stlye. Some of the colour translations work better than others: the new pastel colours are lovely....but in the girl fending off the hooded gun weilding character for example, the beauty of the pencils gets a little lost....I think it's partly down to textures-try to keep away from shiny shiny where its not neccisary (some of the top characters are guilty of this);) and also pay a tiny bit more attention to the form (I think the hooded character isn't quite sitting in the percieved 3D space as much as he/she could:)

I really enjoy the last goblin, it is very much your style converted to this end, well done.
I think that you should add some value to the piece however, it seems a little flat. Use some darker greys to show form, yada yada, you know the drill ^^
Keep it up!

anjin: I'm so happy you noticed my biggest source of inspiration! I've always wanted my style to have that european comicbook style rather than the feeling of japanese anime. I don't quite understand what you mean about the goblin though, but I'm really curious to find out. Perhaps there is something I can change now that I'm in progress wih it?
teq_sta: Jeei! I have an update for you in this post then. :)
Flaskpost: Tackar tackar!
curry23: thank you kindly. ^.^
daveneale: yeah, those character designs in my first couple of posts are very shiny shiny. :) I'm constantly trying to improve my digital colouring and I'm definitly focusing on putting the lights and shadows in the right places. Thank you for your critique! It's very helpful.
Buckster: Yup, I know what you mean dear.. I'll sit down and work on the values today if I have the energy. :)
Peter_K: I'm glad you think so! I've always thought that motion is what I lack most in my art. :3
Homeless Foxman: I'm taking a class after summer, studying the human figure and dynamic anatomy. :) I'm having some problem with the motivation right now when it comes to opening books about anatomy. But I definitly need to work on it. Thank you for your critique! ^__^
New update!
I just had to draw a cute girl with some more meat on her bones. :) I don't do that alot since my personal taste lean otherwise, but I love this little character I drew on the train a few days ago.

Well... I think that in Europe there a lot of different styles for comic, 'caused for a lot of different country. French comics are super high level, in my opinion. Well from your girls style and the goblin there is a style difference... but maybe is something only in the WIP. I find the color in the goblin maybe more "painting" the illustration like other things you did. Maybe is only my impression... :) keep posting my friend

hey enmi, very nice linework you have here.
if i may, i'd suggest you practice your values.
one way would be to try to work in pure black and white, that helped me and many others in the industry get around it.
will keep an eye on you,

anjin: I'm a huge fan of barbucci's SkyDoll and I think it shows in my art. :3 And now I understand what you mean with the goblin, It isn't as line-based as my other works, mainly because I've only worked on one layer and tried to get a more painted look rather than drawn..
Chupacabra: I will definitly start practicing values, thank you for the tip and your nice words. :)
Here comes the update... I don't know what to think about this piece as a whole, but I kinda like her face.

But these are just the first few, all your other art is lovely. Looking forward to see more.

kischi: I definitly agree with you, the first couple of characters are paintings I put loads of time and energy into but the end result was not really what I was looking for. I'm trying to pull my style of colouring in a different direction now.
StolenSky: Thank you! I love fashion design and experimenting with outfits. :3
HyperGiant: I'm glad you like her. :)
Flaskpost: ^.^ Jag skulle nog kunna arbeta mer på henne, jag valde att tona ner färgerna lite och inte köra fullt ut, men jag kanske borde testa ändå.
johanflod: yup, I'm on it :)
humanNature6115: Thank you for the tip and the link! I'll definitly check him out, and I agree with you too. Perspective is something I've never really studied and I have avoided it out of fear I guess. :P I'll slap some sense into myself and sit down and work on it.

I like your SB. pritty neet. I like the clean lines you use, but sometimes the colours (used to depict light and dark tones) dont help to clarif the form of your characters.
Your first image for example, the top half is great then the bottom half becomes flat.
will be back for more later. nice pair. :P

June 21st, 2008, 05:36 AM
I really like your style, it's grungy and cute at the same, the way you colour, and the style of your faces are the real stand-out points for me.
By the way, most of these seem to have a theme, if I had to guess I'd say its either a modern dystopia, or a post-apocalyptic zombie fest? This is just going by the amount of bloodied machetes and baseball bats, so I'd say I'm probably way off.
Great work, keep it up, I'd love to see more in the future.

Lex.W: the way you describe my style makes me happy, :3 cute and grungy is how I want it to be like.
You´re not so far off with your assumptions when it comes to all the blodd and weapons and post-apocalypse. Several of the characters on the first page were for a personal project I wanted to do, a graphic novel about two fighting rebel-groups, in turn fighting a dictator who rules the one remaining city alive and kicking in eastern europe.. No zombies, but loads of fighting.
Quinn Simoes: Thank you!

Another update! Two previews of pics I hope to complete at some point. One of Zid Licky again, one of some random sneaky guy with a goofy hat and lastly a bunch of girls I drew all in ink to practice the shadowing of the human face. I used lots of photo references for that one, in case you see something you recognize. :3

Nice characters designs! ^^
You should also try to diversify your characters, cause they all look like each others! Especially girls! The "fat" girl attempt was nice, but she has a thin girl face on a fleshy body...
Keep drawing!! :P
enmi
June 24th, 2008, 12:38 PM
Clochette: You´re definitly right about my girls looking alot like eachother, and ofcourse that is something I should work on. However I am very aware of this and I often chose to draw these kinds of girls simply because thats what I enjoy the most. I'm just keeping myself happy. :P

Update!
The thiefling with the goofy hat is finally finished after some hours. I freaked out over his hands a couple of times and had to get something to eat before I could go on, but anyways, here he is!

July 15th, 2008, 12:46 PM
Well, you know I adore your work. Especially I'm impressed by the design of the characters and their clothes. Just take that thiefling as and example, I love him
One thing I think you could do is to be "braver" with shadows and lights. Again with the thiefling as an example, there's just a small part of his chest that is shadowed by the cloak. It would make the characters look more 3D I think (and it saves work - yay for laziness!), though it might detract from the comic-ish feeling.
Ah, and those black and white shadows-on-faces-pictures are fucking awesome. Really impressive.

Buckster: I'm glad you like him. You know I love spending loads of time on tiny costume details but loathe to do backgrounds. Shame on me!
a la bapsi: Wee, I'm glad you like her! I'm also happy you seem to notice my big passion for clothing design. Fashion is a huge interest of mine. :)
Nubb: Your comment makes me so happy, because It's hard for me to see sometimes that I evolve.. I think I'm in the middle of a phase of change right now. Hopefully I will finally find the right way to express myself.
chuck18mp: I have a coloured version of Magnolia in my deviantart-gallery. http://enmi.deviantart.com I get most of my inspiration from fashion magazines and dolls. :3
Mydrim: thank you!
vaettir: YOu are definitly right about the shadows, and the fact is that I'm very much a chicken when it comes to shadowing things, mostly because I know very little about shading and how shadows fall on different objects. I failed to learn the basics of art at school :P I will definitly start practicing light and shadow for real instead of faking it and guessing. Thank you for your neat critique ^__^

And here comes the update!

You have some pretty smart character designs. I dig this: http://www.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=395682&stc=1&d=1214043458
I like how you've layered the trenchcoat over the hooded sweatshirt, great modern twist to a cloak. You could put more details on the belt and boots, the boots could have some big ugly buckles, could put studs on the belt or something, like so http://www.findcoolclothes.com/products/large_photos/2rowpyrbelt.jpg that's pretty punk rock.
The thief's pose works, the way he's opening up his big coat and reaching with the other hand, good use of gesture to add characterization. Adding a bunch of pockets within the coat, I think, would help make his occupation more obvious.
Looked through page one and noticed this picture. I liked the line drawing version more. In that version you've got all these interesting shapes, but in the painted one you lose them all: the values all get so dark, the shapes disappear into the shadows. Look at that curved rectangle, the wool flap of her hat, that totally disappears in the painted version, so do most of the other shapes. I made the hand cover her mouth, the concentrates all the expression into her eyes, also realistically speaking the mugger, or whoever he, is would want to keep her from screaming. I'm guessing there you were just excited about drawing a well drawn expressive face, but you have to sacrifice it for the sake of the picture, save that original picture if you like it, but continue the work in a new file. The gun was pointing out of the picture, rotating it so now it's motioning towards her. Cropping the image closer keeps the linear paths from flowing out of the picture, see how I got rid of the space at top of his head, that was curving out of the picture, the image is now more in your face, more claustrophobic without the safe distance that was in there before. I like the way you've got that line of buttons moving up towards her face, also the hat flap is in the shape of an arrow also motiong to her expressive eyes, great use of props. Definitely get reference for that gun. The gestures in her hands also need work, use a mirror, think her actions through.

chuck18mp: Thanks!
Buckster: I'm glad you think so honey! I guess I'm more true to myself when I just...sketch.
kaktuzlime: Wow, thank you! That really made me happy. :) I'm working on learning new things, but it might take a while before I dare to upload my crappy male studies.. >__>
SanXavier: Thankees!
armando: That first pic is my mental image of a character in Jeff Somers book, 'the Digital Plauge' I'm glad you like the design, and i definitly agree about the buckles and such.
That other image was a really difficult one for me. I had the concept in my mind and really couldn't get it out right. I think I sketched it three or four times and dod two different coloured versions. I don't like the painted version at all, so I definitly agree with you there. I also agree with the mouth-thingy. I was thinking of putting his hand there but for some reason I didnt.
The mental image I had was that he had just grabbed her off the street and held her up against that wall. As she is trying to grasp what is happening, he pulls up his gun. Not pointing it at her to shoot, just to show her that he has it and that he will use it unless she behaves. Also, I wanted her eyes to be on the gun, not the man, as if the real danger comes from that direction. (check out the 'Zivanka'-part of my deviantART gallery - http://enmi.deviantart.com - for more info on what is going on between these characters)
Thank you for all the honest crit! Really helpful. :)

Clochette: Thank you
bhanu: I'm always trying to keep a healthy distance between my style and anime. :) I'm glad you noticed my love for old-school animation though, since I'm much more impressed by canadian and european animation and comics than japanese anime. Thank you for your sweet comment!
rubbadub: Glad you like it! :D

Another african woman.. I'm so impressed by certain african tribes and their beadworks and complex hairdos.

A new update with some more things for PUSH, the mod...
Character ortho's with some basic gear. I'll design more characters and loads more clothing and accessories in the future, so this is just a start.. Every piece of equipment is removable and these are just some of the outfit combinations I've designed.

I don't know if it belongs here, but I just want to show a texture I'm working on. (the model is made by a friend) This is my second texture ever, but it's important to me since this is what I want to work with when i uhm.. grow up.
Obviously it's not finished yet so... well.. enough rant.. O__o

I love your style, very personal. You're 19 and you already draw so well, this make me feel old and too late to learn how to draw...

Peetaer: Thanks! I've been drawing ever since I was a lil kid, but I started working digitally at 14.
revenebo: It's never too late! And I'm 20 now ^__^

Finally an update. I've been focusing on my texturing for a while, and doing lots of school-stuff. This is the first digital painting-thingy-doodle I've done in ages..

I don't mean to repeat everyone else but you do have a unique style and that is very important.. but also like a couple people mentioned i'd like to see some male studies since most of what you have presented is girls! "] We're about the same age so i hope you take my advice as a peer "] believe me if you get stuck on just one thing and don't do anything else.. the business world will hire someone who has variety over you any day, you know?

New School: I understand and agree with what you´re saying, I should definity draw more men and get more variation in my art. But I'm not aiming for a job as a concept-artist really.. Drawing is my hobby and lifestyle, my job will be as a texture-artist hopefully.. :)

Here is an update!
The colours are all wrong and I might redo it at some point, but don't count on it..
edit: bah! uploding didn't work.. I'll update later with the actual image >__< darn it..

What a cool sketchbook. I really like the drawings and sketches. What stands out to me are the clothes and costumes; they're so much fun.

hp: Thank you! I got the idea for her when helping a lady catch a little goat that didn't want to get captured. The lady called the goat "little princess" so I got home and drew a goat princess O__o
RobRey: I'm glad you think so :)
Asatira: clothes and costumes are my passion. The characters are really just dolls to put clothes on for me :P

Update!
This is just plain fun for me, since it's a portrait of a character I'm playing in a tabletop RPG. Her name is Rini Vitpäls (whitefur) and she is a mutated rat, tiny compared to humans and she's got plenty of secrets. In our previous tabletop session she got captured by some evil mutant-rabbit-men! O__O but enough babbling..

Your style is pretty cool; the last pic on the first page was adorable. I really like how you design/render your characters. Just by the expression on some of them, you can sort of get their personality. Can't wait to see more!

I'ts been all too long since I updated my sketchbook. I've been busy being creative in other ways. I'm studying and learning 3D and I work alot on my texturing-skills. I have to get a job someday and texture-artist is what I aspire to become.. This ofcourse means that I get less time over for drawing and sketching. Here is a piece without any real purpose.. It's just an illustration of a pretty girl.. the thing I love doing the most, purely for my own enjoyment.

wonderful simple looking style, but with plenty of detail fed in quietly.
Show off your texturing skills, that's why the sketchbooks are here, for the ephemeral side of your works not just the finished pieces.

hp: thanks! Some texturing is coming right up :)
young paddy1: Happy to hear you like my style. I agree with you, this is a sketchbook after all.. I have plenty of unfinished pieces that I could upload. I don't know why I haven't done so already..
Bullsey: I'm not working on a mod, just school-stuffs. I've just learned the absolute basics of 3D.
Mokinzi: I'll make sure to be more active here again. Thanks for your nice words!
Bai Fan: Yah, I could explain.. but it would grow into a long rant about nothing important at all. :)
Grafguy: Yah, I'll post some 3D-stuff. But promise not to laugh! I'm a complete noob when it comes to this stuff..
---------------------
So... these models and textures are made for school-assigments. The first one was to create a toy using only polygon primitives. The second one was to create a low-poly character for animation. The textures are hand-painted since I find it much more fun than working with photos.. I'm currently working on a scenery wich involved photo-textures.. I might upload screenshots of that some day. :)

Really great, strong style! I'm particularly attracted to it because it reminds me a lot of one of my favourite concept artists, Ben Newman. He was Lead Artist for the Timesplitters Series, in case your interested in looking him up (he has a sketchbook on here too).
Keep up the great work!

Gah! I haven't posted anything in ages! I'm a bit ashamed of myself, but I've been busy with making games, winning Swedish Game Awards, fourth place in "make something unreal" and stuff like that... Hah! Shameless bragging, but it's true!
So. Here is some new art:

Since I don't have time for drawn or painted art as much anymore I'm posting some screens from a project I've been involved in at school. It's a concept-movie made to look like a game. The graphics are just as limited as if they were to be in a game.
I've designed and modeled the character and painted all of the textures for this movie. The animations were made by my friend Gabriella Liv and some of the environment meshes were created by Dennis Granström.
The sketchy concept at the bottom of this post was actually made with the facebook graffiti tool O__o
Check out the elysion website for more! The movie will be uploaded very very soon! http://elysiongame.weebly.com

Jeeper creepers your a good artist. I would really love to see more of these screen shots. They look so moody and well textured, especially where she's spitting up blood. But I do hope you get to do some more sketching and painting soon, because I love those too.
Please keep posting!

Gosh, it was ages and ages since I updated this thread, and I've been really busy just working lately.
Since I started this thread a lot has happened. I used to study video game graphics, now I've graduated and been working at Coffee Stain Studios (creators of the PC game Sanctum) and I'm doing concept art full time as a real proffession. It's pretty neat, but it means I have very little time and energy for personal art.
I'm uploading a sample of the stuff I'v done these past uhm.. years, since I last updated here. I'll really try to get more active again in developing myself as an artist and spark my inspiration for personal art again.
