[ This ambush predator is not meant to just be a spider. ]
[ It's some freaky alien creature with spider-like qualities. ]
[ It's probably about the size of a small or medium dog, although it's leg-span might be larger. ]

it was somehow cathartic to do though.. :)
haha, just realised ive compleetely masked the fact that its supposed to be in low branches ready to pounce - it looks like its sat in a bush. damn! naver mind! :) I'll get it next time.

Spend an hour trying to speed paint this critter. It lurks among the moss covered trees, legs blending into the surroundings, waiting for prey to wander beneath.

I'm not happy with this, but I don't have a better idea, so I'll leave it as it is...

I tried to speed paint it and keep it to 1.5 hours. Needs more alien though.

ExiledRed - The perspective works, but the colors kinda mess it up. Its just too much of the same color, random details just adds to the confusion and the tree simply doesnt read (looks more like a road). The idear works tho.

Scumworks, thanks for the crit.
I was actually working on the tree when I hit three hours and felt I should stop to keep it a 'sketch' project.
I didnt like the severity of the beasts shadow either,
anyway I went back to fixing up the tree, just for you :) (see edit) but I can't help thinking I've lost atmosphere in the process.
what you think?

I remember reading an article about a species of spider that lives in South America that is very nomadic and does not spin webs. Instead it instantly dismembers its victim after killing it. What it does not eat it attaches onto its body and carries it around for later.
Here is the alien creature. I tried making it smaller - to the size of a medium dog, but it didn't work right.
Another hiker comes along to become another meal.http://www.vintagegijoe1964.com/sketchbook/treespider1.jpg

Should I draw the scene or just the tree spider? o.O

Made this in two parts. Design spider first then made the scene.

my third Photoshop picture... well, I've struggled with the angle and the tree very much, but it just couldn't work. I think I need some very basic studies :)
and I think my drawing needs some highlights, it's too flat.
