hey, Brendan, not bad! have you studied with Glenn Vilppu before? Your figures are reminiscent of his.
mmm... I guess they still haven't updated the supply list so I'll post it here:
1)Drawing board (large enough for 18 x 24 drawing pad)
2)18 x 24 sketch paper (Canson Biggie Sketch pad or similar)
3)Pencils- may use any from list:
- Derwent Drawing Pencil (ivory black 6700 or Terracotta 6400 or Venetian Red 6300)
- Faber-Castell Polychromos (Schwartz, Black 9201-199)
- Koh-I-Noor Hardtmuth GIOCONDA pencil (Red Chalk 8802 or Negro 8815/1)
- General pencil co. Kimberly pencil 525 9XXB
4)Single-edged razor blades
5)Kneaded eraser
6)Sketchbook (for taking notes and sketching)
If you have conte and smooth newsprint that's ok to use in place of the bond paper and pencils I've listed.

nice drawings..they have volume, line, anatomy, ..but one thing they lack..strong form and sensitivity to value..i think a goo visit to the museum will help ,a deeper study for the softness of light can only be learnt from those white greek or academic sculptures..that will put a lot more refinement to your already strong drawings..

There is a quality of line - eve in the hatching - that i have not been able to figure out. loosenes and still control over the line width and placement.
I am impressed.
I live way down south in Alabama and I have been saving up for my next big art workshop adventure,

Do y'all do any more condensed workshops, I don't think my job would let me loose for 10 weeks.

Life is far from boring. I actually switched away from "using my imagination" because i find more beauty and inspiration in life then anywhere else. The rhythms of the shapes and muscles on the figure and the the intricate ways the muscles on the face can change so slightly and convey an entirely different expression are amazing. I am sure I am not the only one who thinks this way.
sorry to digress. Dangerousllama, your drawings are beautiful. thank you.

panchosimpson
July 3rd, 2009, 04:27 PM
damn, I had my post all set out and firefox crashed on me....
I've heard Hele flakes are magically delicious! I like this new study, the structure reads really well (but judging from your drawings...well duh :) ).
I'd like to offer you a few thoughts though.
Like I said, the structure is very well stated, but I think the edges are too hard, particularly in the head. Here's a good example of solid structure that maintains soft edges
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e155/panchosimpson/cornwell/AuburnNude-harveydunn.jpg
More importantly, I think that you should focus on color relationships and light to bring your work to the next level of realism. I think your choices are too influenced by the local color of whatever you're painting. Even if the light is excessively warm, you should seek out the cool notes wherever you can find them. The resulting vibration will make your work literally sparkle :) Check out Steven Assael's heads if you can.
Even a field that reads as say, flat blue (bg) can be painted with closely related notes that vary in hue and temperature and suggest greater color movement. If done well, it'll still read as a flat blue from a distance, but it'll have a special....charm let's say :)
I think you'd also benefit from considering the color of the light more so than the color of the objects depicted. Check out this Cornwell to see what I mean
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e155/panchosimpson/cornwell/cwell.jpg
The carpet is a great example of this...there's a flat red wash statement under it all, but he added cooler, high value bluish and yellowish notes that describe the light in the room more so than the color of the rug.
I guess this is a more impressionistic approach to color and light, but if used subtly it can add enhanced realism and a certain je ne sais quoi that is very appealing :) Painting the light will also unify the big impression of the whole thing.
I hope you don't mind, I took the liberty of doing a paintover to show you what I mean. Of course I exaggerated it and made him look like some kind of gaudy prostitute, and the bg became too cool....but look at the face and I think you'll get the idea.
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e155/panchosimpson/kirk.jpg
anyway, keep posting buddy!

This is one of the best I've seen on entire ca so far, live drawing that is.
Your gesture is beyond awesome, great stuff. Only thing I would suggest is you do looooong studies once in a while(at least 15 hours...), and practice as much rendering as possible. If you can't find a model, go to the museum and draw sculptures.
I don't think it's bad to draw fast, it's just that you can get so much more refinement, not just the rendering, but even in the lines, if you really take your time.
Oh yes one more thing, you HAVE to keep doing this, your awesome :D
