Kinda cool... and yet, why the hell would you want to encourage this guy?

I've never been a big fan of the rockstar element of the art world. I appreciate his youthful energy, but I can't help but think that this looks like an episode of behind the music.

I remember watching "Whales and Orgies" a few years back and getting really inspired to do art. And ever since then he's been a favorite of mine. I wonder where I can find "Dirty Hands" now that it's finally finished... thanks for the heads up Lok! :)

All I want is this guys energy and fearlessnes and the I don't give a shit what you think about my art attitude. I've always found that I work better when I just dont care and just play with what I do. Trying to mix that with a responsible life can be difficult.

This guy seems like nothing but a douche? Why would anyone care about him or want to watch this movie?

A lot of good and interesting artists were/are considered douches. Does not mean you can't learn from them. Plus they tend to be more creative, than the ones who whine and complain.

"I like to steal shit"
"I like to steal shit"
"I just steal shit, f*** it"
"I could be breaking into your house"

While I don't mind the graphiti artist side of him, the guy seems like a wanker. Yeah we get it, you steal lots of stuff and get into fights, BRAVO, you are such a tough guy".

Another extremest! Iv met many people simmilar to him in my life both with in and outside the art relm. Its always the crowd that fuels thier intent, but in the end isolation melts away the illusion to showcase paper thin concepts and stagnent craftemenship. I appluad his ego and get out there mentality but I cant help but wonder would he function outside the rebel fasaud?

haha, it wouldn't be such a bad video if it wasn't for the douchey moralistic ending.

I am not impressed. He is just a vandalizing peoples property! Would you like someone go and spray paint a penis on your car that you would expect a 11 year old to draw; and the 11 year old can draw better to boot.

nah, shit. Bring on the Shit Gallery from the Netherlands!

Hilarious.

The people that hate graffiti don't watch the whole preview video and post, unknowing that he changes his act by the end of it.

The people that love his assholish/freespirit (whichever way you lie) steal and destroy attitude, watch the entire thing and are disappointed that they can't continue to live vicariously through him after he changed his act.

Whichever one you are, hes created some great art.

"If people stop buying my art and t-shirts, I can still fucking rob your house." That's fucking hilarious!

haha, it wouldn't be such a bad video if it wasn't for the douchey moralistic ending.

I like how you think he's a douchebag because he experienced what sounds like a genuine reflection on his life and wanted to make a change for the better, haha...

Something tells me you didn't see the second half of the video. At first I thought the same, but then it looks like he makes a reassesment of his life (while in jail for 3 months) and is trying to turn it around. I find that to be something to give him credit for.

I've been seeing alot of this stuff recently and it's popular where i'm going to school. This dude, Adam Francey does something similar but it's entirely his thing. he paints on old drift wood and warped plywood. his pieces will have nails and screws sticking out, but it's purely graffiti art. Best thing about it is how he manages to cram so much shit into one big painting.

http://www.adamfrancey.com/

Anyways, this guy has an awesome way of doing things, great energy and inspirational. for those who dislike him, i guess it's your preference on what you see as art. I don't think he sucks at all, he's obviously doing it this way cause that's what he enjoys. It would probably bore him out of his mind to sit at a computer with a tablet. dave's just isn't the kind of person who sits still when doing art, he moves around a lot.

hmm, can't remember the other graffiti artist...his last name is McGee. if anyone knows who i'm talking about, pass the word.

I watched the whole thing.
I'm sorry I don't like thieves, once a thief always one.... not anyone I would ever trust in my house

Ok. so... we have an awful graffiti artist that doesn't actualy have any artistic talent whatsoever, but is elevated to artist status because he destroys shit? and ruins other people's actualy sort of talented graffiti?

if u like this guy, then i just can't accept your opinion. i just cant.

talentless/unfunny graffiti will never be acceptable. beatifull and skillfull graffiti will always be.

lol. you guys are amazing. im proud of how open and accepting you guys are to other forms and avenues of artistic expression :nohope: . i can only hope that age and experience can teach you to be more open to things you might not agree with on the surface. you just might learn something if you stop hating for long enough :)....life's just too short to be so closed minded..especially as artists toward ART! :D-c36

this man steals and destroys other people's graffiti work as seen in the video where he takes a white spray paint and covers someone's solid graffitti.

you are trying to scorn me for not accepting a child whos motto is/or was to do whatever he wants, and just generally be careless and irresponsible.

kindness, respect, responsibility and hard work are great qualities.
"freedom", stealing, disrespect, and being a dick doesn't make you deep, and certainly doesn't make you an artist.

think about what values you are trying to defend? what are they? are they right values?
are they values you want to teach your kids?

On the other side of very puritan approach there are can be such qualities like spontaneity, liveliness, individuality, sensuality and originality.

Boo Hoo. Since when have artist been considered saints. Working hard and expressing yourself through art is the only quality an artist needs.

Graffiti is just that: Someone has to be paid or work to clean it up, it is vandalism on someone else's property. Brings down the neighborhood, and there is nothing special about it. His graffiti work was not amazing, it was just vandalism. How would you like it if someone did that to your parents home or your own?

His work on canvas was great, he could spend time with it and made some freaking great work, so lively some dark and just spectacular.

I don't see why he doesn't deserve a second chance, he did his time, and it turned him around, yes he was a thief, but seeks a different life now... why shouldn't he get a break.

Can I like the art and not the guy behind it? Not sure what the rules are in this situation.

Whatever anyone says, he's got skills. I saw a show of his at the Jonathan Levine gallery, and the paintings upclose were breathtaking. In a way Jason Rainville is right. You don't have to like his personality to like his art. BTW, the stuff I saw at the JL gallery and in his graphic novel Slow Jams blows the stuff in that video away.

Besides I don't believe all that 'i like to steal shit' is completely him. Or else how could he have gained such vast success? Personality is an ingredient to doing well in the world.

Yeah, but the OP isn't about his art. If he had linked to his site (which is here (http://www.davidchoe.com/) and freaking awesome by the way) no one would have had a problem except the hardcore anti graffiti people. The OP was a video that talked about the artist, and makes it more about his personality than his work. That's why there are so many responses to his personality in the thread.

To the people saying he is talentless and has no skill/does shitty art:

Did you even look at his work? Its pretty amazing.

I admire the guy, and wouldnt mind knowing him, even before his reform. I'm not a rich asshole, so its not like he would steal from me.. but thats not even the point. Its good to have all sorts of people in your life. I would learn from his recklessness and apply it to my own life where needed.

Plus his hairdo is siiiiiick :punkgirl:
