Hi all!:tihi:
Iv'e been obsessed by the pen and the paper for a few years now, but the last year iv'e experienced a lack of inspiration. So I decided to join Conceptart in hope of gathering some motivation!

Hey man I like your finger drawings and the cathedral spires (despite of its lean position)! I want to see more of your pictures and go get some life studies if you have opportunity! And there's a a little lack of shadows do them with the top of the pen that will give you more control! Best wishes and KEEP GOING my friend!

En lång linje, inte många korta! :)
Tänk på linjekvalitéen.
Teckna mycket och ofta, så kommer du utvecklas fort.
Go go go!

Tack, ska tänka på det i fortsättningen! :D Antar att korta streck är ett sätt att dölja att man inte har full kontroll på pennan!
ska också börja lägga mer tid på att teckna!

hey thx for comments on my sb.
Some of the sketches here are great specaily the sp
just keep them up and do as much studies as you can from like they will really help you.
Do some shading in them as well that really helps you understand form.
Just keep it up and keep drawing

My first advice would be ofcourse, Loomis/structure of man/bridgeman anatomy lessons.
Great that you draw from life, you learn allot from it. More than from photographs or pictures.
Dannelf
April 24th, 2008, 04:23 PM
lilnebo: Thanks alot! Will put more energy on shading from now on! :)
Blastsniper: Right, iv'e auctually had Loomis anatomy book on the computer, but never really bothered studying it! Do you have any idea where I can get it? Thanks for posting anyway man! :)

Hey! Thanks for stopping by my sketch book! The original loomis books, as far as I know are expensive to pick up, as they have been out of print for a while (someone correct me if I am wrong please, because I would get them all). There are a few abridged versions that are in print, and tend to be 15-20 ish pages long and printed in large format, but only focuse on the basics of one thing, i.e. the head, or compositon.
If you have to book on your comp, I strongly advise you just study from that, even print it out and bind it or somthign if it helps, but he is a really good place to start for anatomy and design. I don;t know about anyone else, but I found his approach flexable enough, so that It was easy to break from it and form my own methods after a short while useing his.
Either way, he is deffinatly worth a look at.
your life drawing is good, you deffinatly seem to be drawing the right things, and your water colour first attempt is better than anything I could do them, so you should keep at it! Have you tried painting speed studys in your life drawing sessions with water colours? When I was at school a couple of guys got good at that, and their work looks stunning.
Thanks again for looking at my stuff, I hope I was of some help. Can't wait to see more of your stuff!
:)

Thankyou Asire! :) I will try to find it! I really don't enjoy watercolours, but if you say so I maybe will give it a try!
This is my most recent picture! :D tried to use long lines as Flaskpost told me, and focused on the shadowing! :) hope you like it! (and I've got myself a scanner so now it will hopefully be better quality)

Hey Dannelf! Thx for dropping by on my SB! Nice studies ya got here. But try to do more life studies and anatomy studies. Also, try a little cross-hatching, and line-quality is getting there, but could be better. Line-quality can be hard to master(I'm also struggling with it), but it'll improve your drawng for sure.

Hey man, the studies are looking great. The right arm on that fantasy-creature you did is a bit wonky though. It bulges in the wrong place. Looks like you've been doing your anatomy studies from Loomis? Go to the page on arms from the figure drawing book and look at the top left profile arm. See where it bulges and recedes? One thing I'd recommend after you've done some anatomy studies, is draw from reference(or from life if possible, it's much better. draw yourself in the mirror if you have to) and try to see these muscles/muscle groups. It'll help reinforce your memory a bit. You'll have to simplify though, there's way more muscles in those Loomis diagrams than you need to know to draw a figure.
ChuanMing
May 4th, 2008, 01:34 PM
Hey man, good studies! Keep doing that stuff, you'll notice improvement fast when you do that. I like your mind-escape, but the fantasy-creatures are a little bit off, if you ask me. It's nice seeing you tackling your weak points.
Dannelf
May 4th, 2008, 02:09 PM
kielbasa_w: Thankyou man! :) Yeah, I think I got back on the same track with the arms as I were before I did the studies! You're right, Loomis it is. I looked up a new book with Figure-drawings and found it much better! You're right, all those muscles are unnecessary! Will try to do some drawings from real-life! Thanks for the good crits! :D
ChuanMing: Yeah, I actually agree!:S Thanks! :tihi:
And here's a new anatomystudy from the new figure-drawing book! :) I made it with charcoal, so it's quite blurry!
It's drawn on an A3-paper, and my scanner is for A4, so I had to do some editing! :er: Hope you like it!

May 5th, 2008, 12:51 PM
Hey thanks for the comment, I'm shocked to have received the little bit of positive feed back I have gotten. I grew up drawing faces and pen gives me a great texture for shading, so that and comic really brought me up. Watching other concept artists and going to art fairs when I was younger kind of kept me open minded for my creativity and sense of style I guess.

Wow!! It's nice to see you're getting better man! Those studies look very nice! You're getting the good way, the best thing to do to get better is to draw like a bitch!!! Everyday, a lot! ^^
Anatomy is great, but I also recommend you to get some time sometimes to concentrate on the thing you draw, it's form, it's rithym, it's life. Helps a lot, and sometimes making some randomness is good to have a rest ;)
Keep up this studies :)

hi dannelf i like you seem to be going in the right direction with your anatomy studies, i think your pencils have are nice and the lines generally seem to be in the correct place but they seem to be a bit blurry and smudged on occasion. i think you should work on using sharper more intuitive lines along with your natural inclination towards careful rendering. in my opinion the best drawings are a mix of well placed lines and selective rendering for example ingres, raphael etc

Hey there Dan! Fantastic to see you're still working , keep it that way! ;)
Well, I actually found some issues on your last study, and I would like to show them with an overpaint cause I'm lazy and talking about proportion errors is boring and it's worthless so here ya go:
372372
I'm maybe wrong but that sound more like the right proportions even tough I'm probably wrong in some parts but the head is a little too big and well, you can see on the picture. Apart from that you're making a lot of efforts so keep it up, I'll be cheking ya mate ;)

ey,
i don't understand a thing. Why are you so good when you studdie ans (if i may say) SO TERRIBLE when jou just draw. i think you do not think true the picture in you're mind when you place them on paper. You make a anomaty sketch that is (on a few points not) perfect and then you make a drawing that could be of a ten year old. TRY USING THAT WHAT YOU'VE LEARNED IN YOUR WORK. or you don't have to do it if you do not use it. Love your anatomy sketches and you know wat i think of the rest. not that i'm so perfect:p

Suira: Oh, it's an honour that you've put so much time in helping me finding the errors! :D Will try to get them right next time, promise! Thanks alot man! :)
Sebastianrenaissance: Easy, dude! :) Drawing from the imagination is like 1000 times harder than just draw from a dead picture. My real skill-level is the one from the imaginative pictures, so please don't offend me by saying a ten year old would do better. But you're right! I never think through my pictures! :dur: Thanks for stopping by anyway!

Pretty sweet anatomy drawings. I don't think I'd have the patience for that. And just a tip, if you hate colouring as much as I used to, I suggest picking up a decent tablet for your computer. I recommend a Wacom 'Bamboo FUN' as it comes with Photoshop Essentials (all you need to do fantastic colouring). Make sure it's not too small (8.5 by 5.3 ideal) and it should run you about $250 after taxing. It has made colouring a cartoon finishing a blast for me.

May 22nd, 2008, 02:47 PM
I neglected to read the whole thread and realized that you have a photoshop program already; even better! Still, a tablet makes things a million times more enjoyable. I like that bee-head thing, btw.

Your pencil drawings are looking nice.
But the colour of your coloured pencils seems a bit cloudy (hope you know what I mean).
It just looks like the colour is painted over the old pencil drawing with maybe 40% opacity or something.
Just in case you didn't knew that. you could colour your drawings much easier by doing this steps:
1. ctrl + a (to select the whole image)
2. ctrl + c (to copy the image)
3. ctrl + x (to create a new backround)
4. cltr + v (to insert the old picture as a new layer over the new backround)
Now you sould do a rightklick on your linework-layer and choose "Blending Options". You sould chose "Multiply" on the "Blending Modes" in the opened window.
Finished. Now you could draw on the Backround layer and the colour appears under the linework of your drawing.
I hope I could help you. If you already new that method. just try to use some more colourfull colours. ;) This would look much better I think

Thanks for stopping by my sketchbook. I think studies are very important, and so is working directly from life whether it is gesture drawing or longer still life sessions. Learning to look at the world and constantly see more than you previously did will help you create believable forms and circumstances as well as hone your drawing/painting skills. Draw objects that interest you, and objects that bore you. Draw everyday things and make them exciting for yourself. Try different approaches and challenge yourself to learn something new when you sit down to draw. Keep it up, keep posting and getting feedback- there's a lot of very good advice in these forums.

TLL: You're perfectly right! :) I find it the only way to get an acceptable colouring, when I don't have a tablet! Thankyou for the tip! Will try it as fast as I can! :D
aedman: Will upload some real life studies right ahead, and keep on do them even if it kills me!:) Thanks for all the great tips!
Okey, so I did some real life studies of stuff that bores me, and stuff that interest me! It's my old baby slingshot (), a pencil sharpener, a candlestick, my brother's parrot and a skull! :)

My first piece of advice as to the pencil sketches: Squint when you draw. It helps to break things down into shadows and highlights. Block out your shadows first, to build form. It's OK to make sketchy lines, but try to break yourself from the habit of lines. That was the hardest thing for me. If your going to shade and try to realistically render, there are no lines in real life. Keep it up. EEK

Thanks for the advice and for stoping by mate! But my goal is'nt to draw as realistic as possible. If it would be so, I would rather be a photographer. A good line is often a good way of catching character. It's admirable that you've decided to skip lines in you works! I wish you good luck! :)
Here's some anatomy doodles done from head. Think it's getting better. Don't hesitate critting! :)

Ah, then if you're going for a more graphic style maybe try varying your line width a bit more. I always try to envision it as a lighting source and anything that would be in shadow gets a thicker line.

Hey Dan! Nice to see you're still working. I have a little advice that may help you. I've seen that your last studies are getting too rigid, try to give them a more relaxed look, cause even if we got muscles we can relax them , doing this will help you a lot, also trying to improve your line with some exercises, like drawing without touching the paper with your hand, just with your pencil, also trying to improve your rendering and introducing variation on the line would help.
Keep working friend ;)

Good studies! Bra, or how do you say it in the west. Your colouring needs more contrast and more "harmonious" colours. Eh, I don't know what I'm talking about but post #71 showed improvement and then with post #79 you went backwards... continue from #71! And keep updating.

June 6th, 2008, 02:28 PM
yay man ! thats the way to go! keep up the studies and try to understand the forms and save in your brain in what way and why these bodyparts move like this ,im sure it helps to get naked in front of a mirror and to draw your :404sign: haha. im kidding :/ im sure u know that i mean the other bodyparts.
So, get a penicl ! paper ! sit down ! and drahahahaw ! :)

June 10th, 2008, 12:02 PM
Yeah boy! that's nice, mirror studies are incredibly good to discover the real way human body is, but the part of that exercise wich is more important is the watching your body process , not the drawing, the drawing is there to recall you those forms.
Something I thing that would help you a lot is to restart from the basic forms, we don't expend the time we should on really understanding the 3 dimensions of space and we wanna keep doing the more avanced stuff cause it's funnier but really dude, it's amazing how many things you can learn just by going back , actually that's what I'm doing. ;)
Btw, I would like to suggest you some stuff to improve your last drawing from mind:
First, even if it is from mind , try to give your drawings a natural look, not rigid, relaxed, even in a tense situation our body isn't so rigid, so expend most of the time on how are you gonna draw your characters and your composition.
Talking about it, a background would help a lot on the atmosphere, so it gives you a more dramatical feeling.
And well, after having all that stuff solved you can start rendering, detailing, etc. It's quite a shame to be finishing a drawing , all rendered and detail and getting the feeling that's something wrong on it.
To finish with this XXL post ( :P ) I did a little overpaint , very crappy of how you could try to give them a more natural look and also make them be proportioned with each other, I mantained the mad guy's size cause I didn't know if it was intentional, anyway dude, keep working, you know I'll be cheking ya! ;).

Woah, thankyou for that neat little comment Suira! :) haha! Thanks alot dude!
Okey, so I shall focus on getting the lines right, and not the shadows? Sounds logical! The shadowing is just timestealer!
You mean to draw shapes like cubes and stuff? :) Or just lifestudies?
Okey, more sketching and planning and less improvising! (I'm just to lazy thinking about bakgrounds, haha)
I really appreciate your critts dude! :) I'm very thankfull!

-But at the moment I was going to inquire you people here about tablets!
I've decided to buy one, and as far as I've noticed so is Wacom selling the best tablets. A bamboo is the one most tempting (right price and quality when i'm quite short of cash).
Is a tablet with the size A5 much better than A6? How much differnce in quality is it in the different price classes, and so on...
Would be happy for any reply! :)

your work is getting better the more you do. definatly for me the more regular and varied life drawing you do the more you can recall on how to draw dimension and muscles even when you dont have a model or actual object in front of you.
you already havbe a good and developing sense of depth in you drawing with the shading! keep it up.
wacoms are very helpful. i cant imagine drawing on a computer without one now. i picked up mine on Ebay for half th price of how they come brand new and it was untouched. if you do use ebay the best thing to do is keep checking for a wacom. sooner or later someone close will sell one and then you dont get stiffed for the postage!

So, today I've just been messing around with photoshop trying to discover as much as possible in it. And I got to the conclusion that it will be alot easier to colour when I get my tablet! The problem is that I don't know how much money I should spend on it. The cheaper wacoms is possible to purchase now, but with the more expensive ones I have to wait for a while... (Not a pleasure beeing broke on summer-vacation).

Hey man, good to see you going at it again.
As for your digitals, I'd start with painting in greyscale first because you'll get a clearer view of the values and stuff, and if your values are good, then it doesn't really matter what colour you put on it.
Just switch to greyscale(or grayscale) mode and when you're finished, switch back to RGB mode, but I think you already know how to do that.
Also, try to read about colour theory and study from references and stuff. Oh, and try to limit the use of the opacity mode in the early stages of a digital painting and try to experiment with the brushes.
The default round brushes are a bit too hard for me, so I mess around with settings and use different kind of brushes.
You can also download them, or make them yourself, it's basically up to you.
Cya man.

I've been kind of lazy recently, though I've been drawing at least 20 minutes a day.. (heh)
I bought a A5 sketchblock which I could bring everywhere. So I filled one page up with bodies drawn from imagination. Gave myself like 1 minute each, so the lines got VERY messy.

very good stuff so far! you're pretty much of a worker, huh?
however, it pys off, you made some great improvement :)
love tho pose studies, those really do help, i can tell!!
you digital rendering has improved too but still there is not enough variety :)
last advice on your pencils :) try to loosen up your line. do this by drawing without rising your pen from the paper. and do also some hatching practices!! hatching can look pretty awesome, if done right :)

Just seen all this and very interesting to see how you've improved over time. The anatomy studies are great although try drawing a few skeletal structures, it could help you remember where all the muscles are placed. It would also help your proportions and scaling.
Anyway, all good. Keep going.

Gogo Dannelf!
keep it up!

For highly detailed reference about each bone, Artistic Anatomy by Paul Richer is a great book, however it doesn't go into perspective or how to draw as it's purely for anatomy reference.
As for skeletons on the net I would've thought Google would be your friend. But try http://www.fineart.sk/index.php?cat=1 as there's loads of scans there.

Welcome back mate! good to see you posting again.
Now there are several things to crit with this new piece. First of, it's good that you practice with random brushes - photoshop is a tool, and the more you practice with the tool - the better you can use it to you advantage. So keep that up.
Now for what the piece really is. The snake looks flat because it's not affacted by the environment. The colors are cold and so some cold light should be reflected upon the snakes edges to make it fit in :) Other things to think of is the further away in the piece - the less saturated it gets, like if you look in a picture of mountains you'll see that the mountains very far away are all almost the same color as the sky. There isn't really any visible horizon or anything that indicates a plane area - the green goes into the brown and makes the piece look very flat.
The foreground is also very chaotic - it's hard for the eyes to focus somehwre. Try to add some shapes like rocks and stuff - grass/whatever.. I feel like I've ranting like a madman.. sorry. You're doing good - keep on drawing and improvement will come!

"If something is buggin you about a pic, 99% of the time it is not color. It is drawing, then value, then composition, with color coming way down there."
mera studier! go go go! =)

I think with your environments you should try and do some life sketches of streets, hillsides and so on. This will help you understand perspective, distance and depth within your drawing. Maybe even just the inside of a room if the weather isn't permitting.
As Flaskpost said, it's mainly to do with the drawing - good point mate :)

Keep up the work man!

I'm here once again!
Glad to see you keep drawing and trying to get better.
Well, you asked for advice on your digi paintings, well I can recomend two things: if you're working from imagination make studies on anything you want to include ( rocks, water, monsters, whatever) and try to get a good composition, the it's just working on values and that stuff, of course it never comes as you want completely ( in my case not even partially) but helps to improve a lot.
I'll be back soon ;)

Hey man, sorry för att jag inte varit här på ett tag. Jupp, går sista året - estetisk bild och form. Kanske sveriges onödigaste linje.. anyway :P
Sweet updates, you're definitely improving with your values - octopus looks good. I think pen and paper is what you need to focus on now a bit, before charging into digital mediums.
The last piece is awkward, anatomically the upper part of the body is good, some proportion issue with both arms though.
I don't wanna sound like a party-pooper, but drop the feet :P It doesn't do the piece any good in my opinion. For me it looks like he got his feet chopped of in an accident and is wearing some sort of random thing. The legs are also in weird position, try spreading your legs the same way.. feels kinda wierd :)
I don't want to come of in a bad way, just trying to help you out. I'd do a paint-over of I wasn't so damn tired.. ska se om jag kan fixa nått senare. Oh förresten, joina gärna min och lingmerths challenge :D kommer bli kul!

Hey man! Nice to see you live and kicking! This latest piece has a good start. I hope you put more time into it - decide on a focal point of the piece, like the face, or the helmet - and spend most time on that point - adding more contrast and detail there than other spots.
I think the issue about depth lies in the background being sharper than the elf! those abstract strokes are thinner and sharper than anything on the elf.. and so the elf is not as interesting. I see you've chosen on airbrush, which is really handy when laying colour down and geting variations right :D what you need to do now is take a sharp brush, like normal round on 100% and start detailing. Add some more contrast to the helmet - some texture and some strokes to define volume. It all seems kinda flat because you have different points of lighting and not so much contrast.
Lots of talk - im off to bed, but tommorow Ill try to make a quick paintover, I think it'll be easier that way :)
keep it up man!
oh and a good tip when painting, flip the canvas - it resets the eye in a way, makes it really easy to spot mistakes like if an eye is a bit higher than the other etc. You can also add a custom hotkey for canvas flipping.

thnx for stoppin by, I appreciate it ;)
I have to agree with DV, if it were a picture the focus would be on the background and the character would be a blurry spot, switch it!
maybe try some shadow/volume studies with balls in PS?
grtz and keep up the hard work! :)

Now on to you. some great imaginative pieces and awesome studies. like previous people have commented your drawings lack some depth so I suggest you invest in different grades of pencil if you don't already. Failing that use black pen for really dark areas. If your anything like me you will absolutely love using biro. keep up the great work as I will be visiting again. Later man.

Man you've improved. This is piece is much more technically advanced than all your former stuff, better valuecontrol and volume!
There are still some things to think of, for example the body of the creature looks flat. Not because of the values, but because of the strokes - you've only applied them in a flat way, straight down lines, when it's body is more cylindershaped and should follow the bodys mass!
Just some details to keep in mind. And also, studies are a great way of improving. Since drawing from imagination jut sums up what you know about all the aspects of painting, and leaves little space to improve, though this depends on which area you want to improve in - but allways when I have improved with drawing from imagination it's been because I was inspired by other people and tried to learn how they did their stuff.
grymt jobbat Dan! :assspank:

Hey dude. Not to go jump on someone else's band wagon, but DefiledVisions has a point, strokes are really important in making things believable. It would, for example, be good to see you use more deliberate strokes in the "face" of the creature, also using a smaller brush there could help. Using stronger contrast in the focal area is also a good way to add interest;)
