View Full Version : Color Issues from Painter every time I save

I have been using painter for a while and usually do black and white or grayscale work but I have noticed when I save from time to time or jump from Photoshop CS3 to Painter X.1 that the colors are shifting to more satuarated (butt-ugly) colors. I want to get to the bottom of it. I've been saving it CMYK and flattening them and it seems it's looking like crap I also saved them as psd and not the riff cause I do some altering in Photoshop or get sick of the speed of Painter. All the versions of the programs are up to date and have been through the process of this. I wonder if it's the saving as a psd or the saving as CMYK or both. I've attached samples of the problem.
The more yellower version (first one) is what I like and slowly a day later of work (basically outlining) the later two until the awful teal looking fish bowl.
Has his happened to anyone else? Please help. :wtf:

it was explained to me like this:
While you work in painter it's strictly RGB. When saving to a photoshop file as CMYK and then continuing to work on the image you JUST saved as CMYK you have done a conversion from RGB to CMYK right back to RGB. The more times you save like this and continue to work in painter the more and more problems you'll have with colors, due to the CONSTANT RGB and CMYK conversions.
Do what you need to do in painter, saved either as a PSD file in RGB or simply a RIFF file and then if you feel the need to bring it into photoshop do so, change to CMYK ONLY ONCE and do what you need to.
the point is, if you're going to work in painter AT ALL save your files to RGB. It's a pain in the ass, but that's why you can color correct in photoshop. One of the downsides of digital painting.

So what if I work specifically in RGB until I need to print? Do you think I will still get all the lousy color changes? This sucks especially with Corel always giving you the idea you can jump back and forth without a problem.
I guess I'll have to do all my PS done first and then go to Painter to finish and maybe back to PS for final adjustments.

Hi,
These might help, at least with part of the color problem:
Consistent Color PDF, by John Derry (http://homepage.mac.com/pixlart/.Public/PDFs/Consistent%20Color.pdf)
Also, a CMYK compatible Color Set created by Tim Jessell to use in Corel Painter. Scroll to the bottom of this page to read the description and download:
Tim's CMYK Compatible Colour Set (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/david.gell/Pages/Guest_Resources.html)

Great I'm going to try and find out as much as I can about this.
So far I started from scratch and worked on PS for the basic colors and now Painter for the finishing.
I'll keep you updated...I'll post it in the finishhed section once it's done.
Man it was really aggravating me off though.

So I finished this piece and it's in the Finally Finished section in case you guys want to see the final version. I ended up using Painter saving in RGB and didn't go to PS until the final was done.
So everything worked out great. So no more CMYK for me in painter or going back and forth. I will try and see if going back and forth between programs in RGB causes any color changes.
