April 8th, 2008, 08:32 AM
Excellent work people!
April 8th, 2008, 08:41 AM
me vote goes to:
1 - daveneale - well stylized and well done.
2 - tommoy - really great lighting and the axe is impressive.
3 - scarypotato - weird and wonderful. good job!
good round everybody. :)
April 8th, 2008, 08:52 AM
1st - Chuck,Mate, no question. Lovely character design and beautiful piece as a whole. I could totally see it on the cover of a magazine :)
2nd - daveneale. Crazy character with a unique style. I like the pose of the hands, it makes him look like a delicate, almost surgical executioner.
3rd - ScaryPotato. He doesn't really say "exectuioner", but the character design and style are cool, and I like the extreme pose.
April 8th, 2008, 09:14 AM
1: Chuck, mate: cute executioner who loved his mom, colors look tasty. Only crit, very stereotype like my own.
2: JPedro: weird executioner, lots of funny details.
3: Daveneale: this guy loves to execute, its in his eyes.
April 8th, 2008, 09:15 AM
1st Chuck, Mate
April 8th, 2008, 11:34 AM
oki, here's my vote:
1st- daveneale (love how you get by without axe and just a weird, scary character in a very good pose)
2nd- Chuckmate, great style, excellent execution(lame pun i know...)classic stuff.
3rd - Tommoy, cool lighting and nice pose. i'd put a small drop shadow under him to plant him a bit better on the floor. Cheers for the comment btw.
rvdtor, hehe, it's great to have an outlet ;)
@miss.lynette, thanks! i really had fun painting this guy. i drew the pencils on the train and sure got some funny looks from folks that took a glance :)
April 8th, 2008, 11:45 AM
1st - Daveneale
2nd -Chuck, mate.
3rd - rvdtor
Daveneale gets my top vote because I like the style and his execuioner looks like he has quite a complex little personality!
Chuck, mate close 2nd for very nice execution (*ahem* scuse pun!)but slightly less original approach, to my mind.
rvdtor- Love her legs! would be nice to see that level of stylization/pushing of form carried to the rest of the piece I think...
Close runner up with really nice use of light -Tommoy
April 8th, 2008, 12:06 PM
Great work this month by everyone - but of course there can be only three...
I had hoped that the colouring would not diminish the original sketch and you did not disappoint. The colours and design are quite gorgeous. One small thing that irks me is the tattoo font as everything else is so nice and painterly but this sticks out with computerised cleanliness.
Great to see a female as the executioner - it helps this piece stand out and shifts a bit away from the stereotype. It is the little details - like the tears - that pull it all together for me. One teeny oddity is that whilst there is lots of blood on the floor there is not any around the area where the head chopping gets done. This is where I would have expected to see the blood.
This an interesting and perhaps more modern take on the executioner. I liked the quiet expression and the large plotting hands for getting down to the business of execution.
tolgatanyel: I liked the comedy in this. Your image told quite a story.
To all the food executioners: I am surprised that this was a popular path to head down but cool that everyone still had a nice unique take on the idea.
April 8th, 2008, 01:24 PM
freakdesign, thanks for the comments! and i think your spot on with the font tattoo crit....i'll change that at some point.
April 8th, 2008, 08:10 PM
(1)Freakdesign - Absolutely adore this style. It's fun and energetic and feels animated. The suckers on it's tentacles are superb. Love the Japenese flag design on its headscarf and the skull and crossbow in it's eyes. Inspired stuff. The colouring and design are top notch too. Very nice indeed.
(2) rvdtor - Well she's just a brilliant character design. The clothes and the pose aswell as her skinny legs are just wonderful. The face is very expressive too. She seems to have a story about her. I like that. Like there is more beyond this one image. Great visualization with the blood marks on the floor. Looks good and weathered in.
(3) Tuovni - Very fun style. Love the little vegetables on the counter, each victims of different execution methods. Very funny and humourous. I like the effects you've incorprated into the design aswell.
Paweu. Thanks for the vote. Cheers.

Here's my scoring...
1st place goes to daveneale. Great stylization, great lighting, and props for doing it without blood, guts, gore, or implements of death. The hood and the little tiny skull accessory were enough to do it, and the less-is-more approach worked very well.
2nd place goes to ScaryPotato. Great stylization and a nice touch of humor with the haiku. I think I might have even given you first place, if you had included the snail that was crawling up the block in the earlier versions...why did you lose him, it was a great little accent?
3rd place goes to Tommoy. Great lighting scheme and the furnace is a nice touch.
Honorable mention goes to jepdro - great painting, though the hot pink light and crazy fishnets and high heels took it a little too much into Rocky Horror Picture Show territory. I dunno if it works, though the idea is hysterical when you think about it...and that safety pin through the pectoral muscle is un-nerving...
I liked chuck, mate's entry as well, but much like my own submission, I wish he had been much more stylized and really pushed/pulled/warped/sized. Though the painting is lovely as always, and solid values/colors...
Great round, one and all, and I look forward to what next month brings.... :)
April 9th, 2008, 05:41 PM
1st - freakdesign
2nd - rvdtor
3rd - daveneale
April 9th, 2008, 11:50 PM
Wow, some outstanding work here! Here are my votes real quick:
1st - Chuck, mate Everything in it just blends together so smoothly, I mean it all fits together perfectly. His arms look a bit off in size, but man, do I envy your style!
2nd - Tommoy You got me with the awesome viewpoint choice in this. You feel totally helpless having to look up at this guy. Some aspects of it don't tie in quite as well as Chuck, mate's (the moon and boards look too sharp), or else I'd have given you first place. Great piece still!
3rd - rvdtor Another great character! For some reason, she makes me think of a female version of Beteljuice:) I really like her non-chalant pose considering what she's going to do....
Other stand-outs for me were daveneale and freakdesign. I thought your guy could almost pass more for a thief than an executioner daveneale, but the piece as a whole is awesome! freakdesign, your octopus looks like something off a Primus album almost, it has a sculpy look to the texture. Don't know how you did it, but it's blowing my mind!
on a side note, madhatter106, the snail got taken out because I thought it gave the drawing too many little focal points, and also they like moist places. I was intending for the chopping block to be covered with moss and such, but ended up with a dried out old stump in the end. he got replaced by the knot on the side :P
April 10th, 2008, 02:32 AM
1- shatteredfx : For the expressive colors and brush usage
2- Tommoy : For the scaaarrryy ambiance..
3- rvdtor: For the cool composition and cool lady :P
April 10th, 2008, 02:30 PM
Yea, I love the details of shatteredfx's face, looks like Leonardo di caprio but I still like it :D
April 10th, 2008, 02:58 PM
Hmmm, my votes:
#1. Freakdesign - Cool Colors
#2. ShateredFX - I like this image :)
#3. tuovni - I like the idea very much
Good luck guys! :)
April 11th, 2008, 02:57 AM
1: Chuck,Mate. Quality entery as ever-love the colours and the face just sells it for me, nice one
2: Freak design. I just love those colours-they work so well together, it also makes me smile (and feel a little sorry for those poor lil fishes:P)
3: Scary potato. I love the dynamic pose and again really nice colour choices-it's great to see your work improving too, keep up the good work!
-Thanks for all the nice comments too :)
