i see a lot of pros using PS and painter for concept art. but i have never encountered anyone using traditional mediums on art. I mean oil or acryllic paints. I know koing makes sculpures, Marko and Wes use pencils for the initial concept. but is there anyone who uses traditional painting in concept art?
I ask this because i feel a bit more comfortable with traditional mediums. It feels like i lost the conncetion with PS and painter (dont ask how), and IMO i feel i can work better traditionally. Im learning oils, watercolor and acryllics now, and they feel better than photoshop.

Honestly you could probably use anything you wanted as long as it could be done quickly. One of the problems with trad mediums is the need to be scanned/photoed inorder to be disseminated throughout the company, then the original must be stored somewhere. On top of that, oils are toxic, messy, and can take a bit to dry...not terribly conducive to quick turnaround, iterative character designs. Hence, not much oil-painted concept art. Photoshop and Painter just allow such quick alterations, as well as producing something digital with no middle process. So you can finish up your design ideas, shoot them off to your AD, he can make notes ontop of your drawing and send it back, etc. Now box covers, and promotional art work are another thing, however thats just pure illustration rather than "concept art"

wes burt does his characters in pencil prior to photoshop
coro has even done concept work in oil for our clients.
it all comes down to results and speed. if you get the results the client wants in a time frame that the client wants you are good to go with any medium.

i guess it does come down to speed, but thankyou all for the info.
Oddly enough, i dont know why, but bringing this up makes me want to try digital again after a long time. Dont know why, i guess it one of those subconscious things.
thank you anyway

http://www.jimmurrayart.com (http://www.jimmurrayart.com/) - he's using mainly acrylics. Also Simon Bisley uses some traditional mediums. They're both rather illustrators than concept guys, but as previously mentioned - it's matter of choice and speed.
