Why don't you try and go to school somewhere? Your already a talented artist, you work hard, and a bachelors degree ain't a bad thing to have. Some companies in the game field are starting to require it. Hell, and college is fun. There are lot's of cute girls there (unless it's an all boys school)... I miss it already. Oh yeah, and that hire me line is mine. You stole it. I have been saying hire me for months now :).

Your mark gets better with each piece. I particular like the approach to the top one. And the palette for both are right on. Your find work......There's always a need for a good eye.

Anyayw, someone should hire you Davi, you've been on these boards for over 33 years.

Davi, your skills are growing indeed. You do have a problem- you are too specialized. Your best work is in one field only- creature design. That's a narrow field, and the competition is hot. Your life drawing (and painting) is definitely moving forward as well, but that's not exactly a hire-able commodity. You recently posted some game concept stuff- steam punk, as I recall- that was not up to professional speed. You need to be able to draw ANYTHING! You need to master perspective, drapery, anatomy, etc. Take the time to master drawing a top hat, for example. I'm not trying to hard on you- consider this a friendly kick in the ass! The hard and honest truth is that there are a lot of extremely talented people competing for the limited number of jobs available, and employers will pick the guys with the greatest spread of skills for the job. Study environments, vehicles, props, historical subjects- and yes, throw in monsters and hot chicks for fun. My advice is to work harder at your drawing abilities and put the color stuff second- drawing is the foundation!

Davi,
I think chukw is right ( this is where you hurt like hell- I know cause I get a crit like this every month), he just gave you a great and honest crit ( I wish there were more like this one, not that I don't like sugar coated lov'n but it don't help you grow) Don't get discoraged, your growing like a weed and I know you can grow into a very marketable artist. Keep chugg'n man. Your work and persistance inspires me.
Ps. How old are you?

Davi, These are fabulous!! I was so damn surprised when I saw the huge improvement in your skills. Who has been pushing/helping you along? I guess I mean, that these are so refined from your last post, that it is literally stunning!
The texturing on the lizard man is far out!!!
Good job.
The only thing I can say is that Chukw's post is the best damn advice I have read in a long time. Pay attention to what he said, I know I am.

thanks everyone for the crits and advice
Redmond, lol
chukw, yeah i agree completely, I've never gone to college and i really can't picture myself going. I've only been painting for 1year and 6 months so... hopefully the growth in my skills(sorry if that sounds vain but i used to not have any) will continue on. I'll be pushing more difficult elements in my work that i have had problems with. I know the best way to learn something is suck in your gut and take some hard hits.
eli, as an artist only one person can be doing the hard work and that's yourself, i've had inspiration from people here and there, but the only reason i've improved is because i do a piece of art every day no matter what. weather it be and envoriment study to a complete reference study. Fun or not i know i have to be doing something, skills don't progress if you linger around complaining about not getting better. I think i haven't not done a drawing in since i got my wacom(august 11th 2002)... so... yeah. I backed up my art image folder on august 11th of this year and i found i had done over 600 individual pieces.
LEN, i'm 21
anyways again, thanks for the kind words.

Yeah, I meet a lot of people with state educations that aren't all that bright. Hell, George bush went to some Ivy League school :). A good art school is a different story. You will learn real world skills and be surrounded by fellow artists. There is a lot to be said for such a community. This board is one such community, but it's not the same... anyway, I enjoyed my time at school. Good luck to you, Davi.

I am also very impressed with your improvement over the last year Davi. I checked out the rest of your site after this thread and I was blown away! Just keep doin your thing, heed the advice above, and it'll work out!
I'm in the same boat as you and I'm learning a lot about patience; I know as long as you continue to improve your skills day by day, its only a matter of time

Congrats, Davi! The news comes as no surprise- you have the hunger and drive to really knuckle down and do the work. 600 pieces? That's admirable, and shows what you're made of. Now the frustrating thing is that you'll likely be working under NDAs, and we'll have to wait to see where your work is going.... ;) Show us whatever you can!

That’s cool you got a job davi where are you working ?
Don’t be to hesitant to go to school though, you get pencil mileage- crits and more importantly networks. Plus it’s a great motivation and inspiration to see other artist, not to say we don’t have that here but its pretty different.
Good luck to ya davi

At any rate, congratulations. I really enjoy your work. Keep posting so I can fill up my 'Davi' folder!

Congrats man. I looked at your resume before I finished reading the whole post. And I was about to say that you may consider learning 3D. Its such a boost if you know it. I'm no where near as good traditionaly but I've had an easier time in the job market since I got out of Gnomon. All I have to say learn as much 3d at your job as you can. It will pay off in the long run. I know allot of people also suggested that you may consider going to school. Sometimes this isn't an option beacuse of fincial situation and sometime we don't have the support from families etc.... I have to add to that schools (some) try to work with you as far finding ways to get loans etc....... I figure someone may benefit from just me adding that. Good luck with your job.

nda isn't really in full throttle yet so i'll show off one of my concepts....
http://www.creatureone.com/02/catbear-v1.jpg
it's a mix of both lion and bear(shortfaced)'s anatomy, and colored like a horse/cow. it's about 2 times the size of a normal lion and much stronger and heavier. It can run at almost the same speed as a lion, but strength makes up for it's drop in speed.
It's jaw doesn't open too wide, so it mainly attacks with crushing leaps and mauling.
thanks again for all the compliments, redmond when i get on location i'll buy a digital camera and take a happy face picture for sure.
anoon, if for some odd reason this doesn't work out i'll give you a jingle.

The only thing I don't like are the bright white backgrounds.

October 9th, 2003, 12:46 AM
Congratulations on the job. Hope it'll be just as good as you expect! :chug:
(Quick piece of advice; Color pieces with white background makes it harder to read values clearly. Darks go darker and bright areas lose focus. I'd take the white bg of your last piece down a notch.)
davi
October 9th, 2003, 12:04 PM

October 9th, 2003, 02:34 PM
Okay, Davi- what Mike said was shitty, but you've got to learn to take it on the chin. You want to work in this industry? You're gonna take it by the bucketload, and you won't be able to ban your clients. Taking crit means sorting out the crap from good, while leting the bad stuff roll off and not letting the good stuff go to your head. You are a power on this board. You want to stop getting crit? Then keep silencing the opposition. If you want to ban me for calling you on acting you on acting like a temperamental baby, go ahead. I don't coddle people over the age of twelve. Got a history with this guy? That's between you two- deal with it on your own. But you won't get far in the business world by being sensitive and lashing back at boobs who snipe at you. Again, this is a friendly boot in the butt- I hope you'll take it that way.
davi
October 9th, 2003, 04:13 PM
There is a difference chukw between giving a friendly crit and being an asshole. Mike has been an asshole to me in every way he possible. Mainly these events have happened on IRC, going by the name 'gayvi', joining a mod channel i was part of and banning me and leaving and numerous other events that I don't care to bring up. The fact is he game on hiding under another alias to insult me; not to crit me.
He knows my job isn't an internship and he said that was an insult, and even though he said my painting was good saying 'your drawings aren't good' isn't really helpful.
I would accept "I think your painting skills are more improved than your illustration skills and you could do some work improving them."
But from the wording of mike i get, "your drawings suck, you paint ok'.
chukw, I understand completing what you are saying though, but this 'history' between us has gone too far. The only reason he does it I believe is because I DO have power. Because of my position has been pushing me to see if i would actually crack, and when i cracked he knew it would make me look like the bad guy. It appears it has worked also.
I've banned about... maybe 6 people on this fourm, so don't think I'm ban happy.
Hell i even let malachi stay even though he's the reason i was banned(for the 3rd time) from eatpoo. I generally don't let Internet 'beef' effect my discussions on the forum and i never try to intimidate people with my power(s) of being an admin.

#1 - That was completely unprofessional and uncalled for
#2 - If you would like to apply for a character design job, employers would like to see more than just a couple of random sketches. Try some character rotations, environments, orthoganal drawings of environments, props, vehicles, etc. etc.
#3 - Prove your anatomy skills. Drawings from life, both long and short poses, with construction breakdowns. Anyone can fake it and call it style, it takes a professional to do it right.
Beyond that, you don't suck, so there's hope. Just don't expect people to come looking for you.

kwilli30, the topic was almost a joke. I really wanted a job but i didn't expect anything to actually come from it. I have a site and a resume on my page, if anyone was really interested in hiring me that could have checked there(and they did).
