View Full Version : SCAD Scholarship Woes

Well thanks in advance to anyone who can help me with this.
So a while back I started the whole application process and during that had received a letter from SCAD informing me that if i applied there i would be getting a 15,000 dollar scholarship based on my sat scores. Quote "The academic Honors scholarship is awarded to any student accepted to the school with an SAT score between 1340 and 1460." Seeing this I put SCAD into my number one choice spot and was the only school i applied to. I got in, and then applied for the scholarship which my admissions interviewer had described as a formality I had to complete. Now come March, i get a letter saying I won't be receiving any scholarships.
Obviously this seems kind of strange to me as the reason I only applied there was the scholarship, which they then proceeded to tell me I wouldn't be getting. Anyway, I was hoping i might be able to get some advice on how to deal with this situation, such as how I might appeal and whether it might work.
Thanks again.

It sounds like the criteria by which the school awards scholarships has changed since you received the letter. Maybe you should have applied sooner?

Hmm, the high scholarship amounts (10 & 15/yr) are listed as "Combined Honors"--both score and portfolio. A mis-communication somewhere? Seems like Admissions (http://scad.edu/admission/contact/index.cfm) is the department to contact regarding your questions.

I know it's a little late to be replying to this, but I had the same issue. I applied to Savannah with the hopes of getting a scholarship (my SAT score was 1590 and my accumulative GPA was above a 3.0) and the assistant admissions director, Jason Parrish, told me that they were unable to award me any scholarship funds.
Now my mom is trying to make me go to Drexel U. (where I did get a scholarship) instead of SCAD, where I really want to go. This whole ordeal pisses me off.

In my day (2003ish) a 1500+ score would have gotten around the 10K/yr scholarship, if I remember correctly.

Im a junior in high school now and im going to take the SAT in june. I think now the SAT is graded out of 2400 not the 1600 because a writing section was added.

Yes, but some schools ignore the writing section, on the theory that judging someones writing skills based on something written in twenty-five minutes is pretty stupid.

What a relief :D, is hard enough for me to finish the other sections in 25 minutes because it takes me long to process everything , im really slow lol.

Exactly. The book they sent me said that too, but it's like they went back on their word. I'm still going there regardless but it just makes me angry.

I was under the impression that you could reapply during your schooling, but I don't know for sure.
D-Eliminator-X - Did you call 'em on it? I'd be marching myself straight down to Financial Aid (or whatever office handles that stuff nowadays) with the book and start demanding answers.

seems to me you have it in writing....you have a pretty good case...in any event maybe if you told other schools what SCAD was offering you can find someone else to match if you still have time. good luck...hope you kept the letter. I have done a lot of research for my son and Ringling also seems to be an excellent choice.

I know EXACTLY what you're talking about. When I was first interested in the school and started the application process last year, they claimed to have a graduated system of scholarships based on SAT scores. I got around a 1500 for the scholarship I needed, and suddenly they go and change the scholarships for fall 2008! I was initially told that my scores would get me 20,000 a year. Now I'm getting 3,000 instead. Ha. Ha. Ha. Yeah, there's no possible way I can go there now. D:

Um, they didn't offer 20K/yr on SAT scores alone when I went there--that was only available to merit kids. 3k/yr is what they offer for just SAT scores in the mid-high brackets.
