That mixed medium piece, I really dig the white paint and the angular collar. The balance of white and dark, and the focus in the middle, makes me smile. Nice one!

Mat- there isn't any bigger file than that, my computer went bad remember?
I'm actually lucky to have that small one:) But I don't like it that much because they look like they're in a pissing contest.
Cool if you dig it! Been influenced by Casey Baugh lately and been reading Alla Prima by Schmid;) Learned a lot from that book!

Focus on the hero thing, maybe look at their characteristics and then think of designing your very own heroes.
Which do you prefer to draw with, digital or pencil? If its awkward drawing digitally why not draw with pencil and just colour things in with digital. Don't be afraid to use photos for texture and for finding new 'shapes'. You've seen the stuff, so really i am betting you know all this.
What you could do is set yourself a challenge. Do a sketch a day! If you cannot buy a small A5/6 sketchbook, buy some cheap printing paper and make your own little sketchbook. Carry it in your pocket with a biro pen. Pens are good because this type can shade to an extent, have a very dark line, and also you cannot 'undo' with an eraser. You could when you get home apply some highlights with white paint or even scane/photo it and pop it out in photoshop.

Looking good man.
crits: Alot of the values are good and even (maybe too even though), some need some punch and/or a little more embellished contrast imo (with value and color in some cases).
I agree with Rist. I'd like to see you create some of your own super heroes (not that I mind the marvel ones, your cappy american looks nice, etc).

Thanks Everyone! Sorry if I haven't been updating:{
The good news is I got a cool gig doing Fantastic Four sketchcards, which is pretty cool if you look at it because my job is just do sketches and be paid..hehe
The bad news is I can't show 'em yet.
But I think I can embelish my tiny 2.5 x 3.5 paintings and finish them digitally . I kinda like the look versus the straight on digital stuff.
Gnoll, Resident Samurai, Novbert, Spats, andy_man, kkris, Rist, Nam and Anthriel. Thanks !
WIP of the Silver Surfer, any crits are appreciated. It kinda lacks that "oomph";P

Hi Meduza,
Great Sb you have here!
on your silver surfer piece though..one crit I would have is that
, even though his left arm/hand is supposedly farther away from
the viewer, it looks larger than his right hand, which, even though it is forshortened, should be the larger arm/hand since it is nearer to the viewer.
love the way you paint man!
Hauxe
September 8th, 2008, 01:17 PM
Awesome SB. Are you a professional artist?
Your women are smokin!
Peter Coene
September 8th, 2008, 07:30 PM
I think the problem with him is that his right (our left) hand is out of proportion. You probably had that problem because of the angle, which throws the entire body off in perspective, but the most noticeable problem being the hand, fix it and you can probably get away with the rest not being noticed.
As for the punch, if you are referring to no SS's look feeling a bit less shiny and chromy than usual, try punching the contrast. Hit the core shadows hard, punch up the highlights, avoid soft transitions and remember that his surfaces are reflective and if not showing a mirror of the planet on the edges will at least catch the colors.

Thanks Angry!- Yup! hate hands, and that would be the actual size of the tiny card size painting, so I'm doing my
best to put tiny details like fingers etc. Need to buy a smaller brush:) But you are absolutely right, Thanks! Take it
easy, man.
alleluia- Thanks! I would love to have a cheesecakey feel to my girls.
I love Adam Hughes and Jeff Campbell. Although their women are so much lovely and has so much life. Mine always looks
stiff, which also makes me look bad because I studied animation:{ I'm slated to study it again, maybe next month. Not
really a pro, I would say. The card thing was supposed to be a side gig and just getting the mileage of painting. I'm
slated to do 300 of those things:)
Peter Coene- Thanks for the insight! Yeah, what happened was I had this silver paint used to spray on rusted
microwave. So I decided to use it in the card. But he looked like he dosen't have sheen on him. I'll fix it in the
digital, Thanks dude!
Jorge Gecov- Thanks! here's another girl......But it was so long ago and trying to update her. I think what I like
in the smaller peices was doing marks instead of blending. I tend to over blend if it's big. I would like to master
painting like schmid or sargent.
And I think James Kei called it "KUNG-FU Painting" hehe

November 8th, 2008, 11:37 PM
Opilione-Are you saying my art is inconsistent now? Or it's interesting to see if it's inconsistent with the other cards. Well I would really like it if it were inconsistent:) It just means I got better along the way.
And I really think that is happening, I probably had 15-ish paintings done in my life and then continued doing it in in these cards. So a lot had changed since I started doing it in July. With each one I'd really want to think I'm getting better and be more confident with the next one.
Just as an example would be my first human torch, It was just horrible.
But at that time I was working with what I had and the knowledge gained after that becomes a pillar when doing the next one.
My only concern is, how will I explain to people that I'm getting better at it and if they got the suckish card, will they go "WTF!" I wish I can get it all redone, if it was me:) But I try to have a time period now of 3-4 hrs. per peice...and going back to other cards is just near impossible because I'll miss my quota. Man, I really hate deadlines.....
Matt-Thanks Buddy! Just average 2.5 inches x 3.5 inches. I guess that's the average card. Haha, I think you'll have to buy a box since it's inserted as a giveaway to collectors of trading cards. Thanks!

Sorry for not updating, been very busy. I actually can't wait for my work to finish so I can go back studying again. Here's a 1 hr. study of Richard Schmids Tiger from Alla Prima book.
A neighbor of mine asked me to draw a tiger for her preschool son. It's probably not appropriate but it was an excuse to have a study of a master. I hope I can do more stuff like this. I really like that whole looseness feel to it.

Are you in the U states or the phillipines? I thought you were in US.
Thanks for the visit & comment. I'm just gathering speed. Want to really have as little issue with my figures as possible and so my focus has been just figure work. Also I'm very drawn to fine art disciplines and sometimes it's hard to pull away from this direction.
I do have some ideas that are starting to hammer at the door. Just not quite ready to let them loose, yet. Also staring to get my feet wet in concept design pro work. But, the traditional skills I am hanging on to as hard as I can.

Not much of a comic hero fan, but your work is so damn sweet it makes them fun to look at. Your pencil renderings on the first page are beautiful!
When doing the cards, do you spend a lot of time laying out the faces, or do you do most of the work with the paint?
