Magic: the gathering Card

Hey guys, gave myself an assignment to design a magic card. Both the image and the card, and here is the final result. I'm pretty happy with the way it turned out, it's about 8x10. Kind of a fast painting, but yeah. Any thoughts or issues, definitely let me know!

Hey Eric,

I saw the title and thought "Wow, he's getting work already?"
You enthusiasm is great, and this sample will come in handy.
The AD's at WOTC are very specific about wanting to see certain things in your portfolio.
This will fit right in.

There are a couple of things I thing you could improve.
Firstly, when painting for a TCG, you really need to be aware of the big shapes and push them as much as possible.
Also, you kind of need to take the concept to the extreme.
If you add spikes, make them BIG spikes.
If you add lava, add LOTS of lava.
Too much is never enough when it comes to Magic.

Here's a quick paint over with some ideas.
I tried to only do changes that would be easy to revise on the original.
The biggest point I wanted to make was in using the BG color to push the FG character.
Try to simplify the BG so that the big shape pops, and use a complementary color to heighten the oranges you've got going on.

I don't think WotC would care that the card text itself is not in correct 'MTG grammar', but it wouldn't hurt use proper rule text.

Lava Turtle should read:
Lava Turtle gets +2/+0 for each Island an opponent controls.
R, sacrifice Lava Turtle: Destroy target Island.

Orc Mountain Raiders:
Whenever Orc Mountain Raiders attacks, it gets +1/+0 until end of turn for each Mountain target player controls.

thanks a ton for taking the time out to do a quick correction study on my picture, ill definitely make those changes, your suggestions make a lot of sense and also make it pop so much more than what I had. I'll have to keep the 'too much is never enough when it comes to Magic' tip in mind for the next one I do, haha. I'll be sure to post it back up with those changes along with the next one, thanks again man.

This an image added to the card right, not an actual MOTG card?
Anyhow, I love the bits you added coming out of the turtle's mouth Ericus.
DSillustration, nice paint over, definitely enjoy the pouring lava.

I created the layout for the card along with the image, I took an original red card and edited it in photoshop to custom make it to fit my image and made up the text to make it look and sound as official as possible for presentation purposes. Thanks for the compliment on the bits too btw.
