Afghan Woman

I recently watched a disturbing show on Afghan women, and I think about it all the time. I had to paint something.

That country needs a modern day Boudicca.

NIce image... I love the green eyes. The only thing is that i can't stop focusing right below the bottom of the earing. Maybe its the green in the shadows that keeps me there but no matter what I always end up looking at that the most and it takes away from the image. i have no idea how to fix that...sorry.

Also it maybe a style preference but I think some broader brush stokes in the cloth would help it out. Since is not as rendered as the face it could keep a well formed balance.

Ah ha! The nose follows the angle of the cloth movement. Your nose banks left and the face follows it. or maybe thats just the shadow creating that illusion... Oh well sorry for the non help reply.

Great mood in the peice thats for sure.

mcotie this is a very powerful image. there is a lot of cruelity in the world and one must endure. her eyes are beautiful and intellegent {in a dancing bag kind of way} i think of a dark kind of supression a silent one. nice work mcotie.

This reminds me of a very famous photograph taken by Steve McCurry for National Geographic. It was of an Afgani woman who had just recieved news of her husband's death. I've actually been drawing from photos of Afganis recently to keep my skills up, and in every photo they always have the most intense eyes. You've done an excellent job of capturing that look, as well as the emotion I see in those photographs every day. Please keep up the good work.

this reminds me a lot of this famous photo of national geographic of that 14 year-old girl with the intense green eyes.
not physical similarities but likeness.

they found that young girl with in the last few years. They where looking for her, and they just happened across her. Its a really cool article i cant remember what month it was from.

yeh i saw that on tv, wasnt sure they actually found her though- thats good to know- and prior to that i wondered if she knew her face was seen by millions half way across the world and elsewhere - great pic, love the eyes/lips :)
