Big thanx to davi & Mike Corriero who came up with this cool idea in Ventrilo Chat!!!

ADDITIONAL INFO

1. This is a special round. There is no written topic. Listen to the sound file to hear what noises the creature makes and come up with a nice creature design and concept based on the sounds.

2. No individual/character!!! Make a concept of a species!

:?::?::?:Click here to listen to the CREATURE SOUND (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/activities/cow-wizzle3.mp3) :?::?::?:

Great idea! Already have a sketch for it.
It's kind of an aquatic-primate. The noise comes from sacks in his neck/chest that inflate. He either vibrates them in the water to make the smaller noises or hoots out of the water to make the larger noises.
The only thing I need to work on is not making the sacks look like big hooters when he's floating in the water. :P

Wow, cool!

Altough, I cannot imagine an offtopic creature that you could disqualify this time:)

if you do a design of a lava, desert, ice creature i think that might be cause of disqualification...

davi this sound has got loads of flanger on it. I cant think of anything that would naturally make a noise in a swamp like that. Sounds submerged deffinately because of the water/backing noise etc. The middle sound has far more repititon of an accent and the pronounciation is far cleaner, its makes the rest of the noises seem relitively in audiable. The animal seems well active as it seems to move forward and away from the recorder very quickly, its like the hyperactive round. Im not convinced its a realistic sound, possible something dying maybe.

Great topic and great idea, Im just bummed cos Im stumped already.

EDIT: seems like im bitter cos the idea isnt there, once again great idea.

Haha.. NICE! Davi.. you're a cooky guy, great sounds. I'm glad we didn't start off with a large "roaring scary belch" of this creature sound test topic. Did I say this would probably be a hit..? yea ;) I think there will be a lot of participants in this round. I can see this being a special week popping up here and there, depending on how this week takes off.

UCT, just take it for what it is :)
I wish we had a professional sound effects guy lol, but this is low budget/no budget stuff lol. I'm sure you'll come up with something, the creatures sound and the background environment gives more than enough information to conceive something believable to go along with the idea.

Fozzy thanks for going along with this and setting the topic up. Davi, thanks for the sound file and you're talented mouth..I mean..voice :P ;)

...and you needed 113 rounds of cow to come up with this brilliant idea? damn!
but reeeeally cool!

Itīs just that the background noise makes it hard to think of something thats NOT living in a djungle, unfortunately....!

You should do this again some time, its awesome!

jhagen22 -

Shit, I had worked up a sketch a while ago that looks kind of similar to this and it popped in my head when I heard the sound file. I was going to produce something similar to my older concept. I guess I'll just move on with it, the final tends to always turn out quite different anyway.

Your sketch is looking good btw.

I'll try to participate, seem's interesting. Still dont know if i should go for a lizzard- or a bird-like creature... probably both in one.
Nice sound, I'm really curious about how you made it... does this background sound comes from a game ? (no, I'm not addicted to wow... Am I ?)

UCT
March 25th, 2008, 10:36 PM
Sorry Davi & Mike, didnt want to seem super critical of your input, its a great idea. Struggling with it though.

Any crits? idea is that the 'laughing' toad, jumps straight out of the swamp and as it come back down to hit the water surface it lets the inards of its green sacks trail behind them, when they hit the water they make the mating sound (which is what we heard). Will have to do an explanetry drawing aswell etc.

nice work guys , I only have this so far:
http://img247.imageshack.us/img247/7606/soundcreatureix9.png

Its an (amphibian ?) bat-creature that uses the sound sacks on its neck to imitate sounds of other creatures .. it's like how some fisherman use a certain low frequency call to get sharks to get closer to their boat, thinking the sound is from a dying fish .. and *whoop* , sushi. lame story , i know. any crits would be appreciated.

Itīs just that the background noise makes it hard to think of something thats NOT living in a djungle, unfortunately....!well, if we have a topic like "Jungle Screamer" you won't be able to think of something that's NOT living in a jungle as well...so see it as another hint for the environment the creature lives in. But i can think of more than only a jungle there. Could be a swamp or steppe as well...;)

UCT
I think if we didn't know how dolphins sound and we would post a mp3 with dolphin sounds you would also say that a mammal or sea creature never could make such noises. There is so much to discover in millions of galaxies or even here on earth in mircocosms, the deep sea or even on land which will blow off our mind when we will hear/see it the first time and in relation to davis sound this ones will be much more strange and alien ;)

I hear ya. Like i said i was basically being objectionable towards the sound because i couldnt process it with an idea. Thats childish on my behalf espeacially when this is a new type of round. This is going to be very popular round because of the new angle its taken.

'Much more strange and Alien' - I'll take the hint.

I've been watching a lot of David Attenborough and discovery channel animals films lately, my head is way full of animal ideas, now i just need to figure out how to make them :}

I'm not sure ill be able to finish my design or not since I'm having stylus problems(i hope thats the solution) and I'm waiting for a new one to come in the mail.

I'll post a WIP for sure though, and if i get my stylus soon(and it is the fix to the issue), ill def pump out a final render for it.

I'm so happy you guys are enjoying this :)

Vyse: The whole idea of placing it in the jungle was to give it a sense of focus in the design. If i would have just made the creature noises, it would have been wayyyyyyy too open.

Davi - ChaoticKnight posted in the lounge thread I created that he may be able to help with some real sound mixing and manipulating software. He offered up his help if we want to try and get another round like this going. Whether it be the week after next or a month from now. Just something to think about in case you want to try and get some more realistic sounds.

and Foz - thanks for your post. People have to think, if we had never seen any... ANY type of animal that exists on earth and just heard the sound, could you even come anywhere close to trying to place it in an animal kingdom. Be it water based, mammal, reptilian, a flying creature etc..

Something to think about. Though we hear crickets, though we hear what sounds like a swamp scene, a water based environment, or what sounds like an amphibian alien creature. Wouldn't it still be possible that this "thing" making this "noise" be a flying creature that inhabits swamps or water environments? Think about cranes, herrings, loons, ducks..etc think of the noises they make. just some food for though.

I've got this idea for a FISH/BIRD alien critter that's semi-intelligent, small, scurrying, friendly, nervous....

Hmm, well judging from the sound file, I think we can ascertain some definite things about the environment. It's near a water source. I'm going to go ahead and rule out large bodies of water. It could be near a lake I suppose but lake's are generally still and they make softer noises even where the water laps against the shore. Oceans make a very distinct noise and the sound file possesses none of those characteristics. My guess is that it's something along the lines of a small stream. It could be a river but the water sounds very gentle. In addition, since the trickle is so gentle in nature yet fairly audible for being such a small sound I think that it must be in an enclosed space. I'm pretty sure that the sound is bouncing off surrounding trees or some other semi-dense foliage. Otherwise the sound would be lost. It might be in a swamp or marsh but water in those environments only moves at the pace in the sound file near the connection points to rivers and streams. So all in all best bet would be forest stream. I'd rule out the jungle. Jungles usually have a wider variety of insect and other animal noises. Just something to help narrow things down. Of course, I suppose its up to personal interpretation.

Arteater - I think the head is too big ...or at least it looks so. Maybe try to make it smaller, the "crop" can be as big as it is. Maybe then it will be looking better. :)

Arteaster - I like the premise of your creature. the neck is very thin although as people have mentioned, if the head was smaller it fit and not be top heavy.

Jakkas - awesome colour, really good believable contrasts. Love the nose and gesture.

Mike - you soo speedy!!! fantastic stuff again. How big (pixel wise) are your files before resizing them? I have resently taken to using A3 paper size so I can incorperate smaller brushes for detail (if im not lazy about finishing). I just courious.

Desviaciion - looking forward to seeing it progress.

Aedant - looking good, get some colour on it.

Well Ive started again cos the toad idea wasnt going anywheres and had bad angle on it, not very descriptive etc. ANY CRITS WOULD BE REALLY WELCOME! -thanks.

EDIT: still wip but progressed. Thanks again Mike, I think im going to go back to the cereal box shape head but get better prospective etc.

Ah, well I've never actually done this before, but lurked forever. Anyway, this seems interesting, so I'm gonna give it a go. No guarentees about a finished product, but here's my idea real quick so far:

http://img262.imageshack.us/img262/6188/sound2kg2.jpg

I'll go more into detail, but basically the constant chirping sounds are the creature 'charging' the chemicals in its digestive system, and the louder noise is the final burst of light filling the sac on its chin. I was planning the light to be the "mating call," but that's not a final decision yet.

Ahh, anyway. Let's see if I actually do this.

Mike Corriero
March 26th, 2008, 11:32 PM
Mike - you soo speedy!!! fantastic stuff again. How big (pixel wise) are your files before resizing them? I have recently taken to using A3 paper size so I can incorperate smaller brushes for detail (if im not lazy about finishing). I just courious.
The final size of this creature including the border is 3614 x 2730 pixels at 300 res.

Thanks btw, Most of the time I use to work strictly large scale start to finish. Now though, lately I've been doing the small thumbnails and the W.I.P. portions at around 150 res. 2000 x 1200 pixels give or take depending on the dimensions. Once I get the rough color down and the general idea I boost it to 300 res. and anywhere from a max. of 3600 pixels in height or width, and some times up to around 4200 pixels. I think my stilt stalker creature was 300 resolution 5811 x 3650 pixels. That's including the border, and that's an unusually large size for me only because the creature was to be very tall most of which were the legs, so I wanted the details on the body to show because it it wasn't that big if you look at the "actual" creature not the background or border.

Mike Corriero

UCT - I hope this paint over serves as a crit and will help in some way. This is just how I would handle your work in progress on the head, neck and chest region. This would be pushed further but you get the general idea.
I would lay down some perspective grids on the head for the eye socket canals leading to the back of the head as well as add some muscle forms popping out and separating regions of the neck and chest. I would try slimming areas down and in ways of curving the neck and eyes so it doesn't all seem very stiff in muscle structure.
It changes up the design of the head, but as you see in the WIP of yours, the perspective point of view you're going for is off, the eyes don't line up and when flipped the one eye seems a bit too large and from this point of view it wouldn't be due to forced perspective. Just some things to think about.

ah, you make a good point cloister. thanks for the advice, i guess i'll just try and imagine it's sound... judging by the WIPs who are mostly small creatures with small noses/airways i'm guessing maybe it's high pitched... maybe a screech? i don't know, i'll just have to improvise and hope it works out.

arteater- personally, i think it would be cool if you made the whole body pinkish-skinned like the head and neck. and so it wouldn't look completely naked, you could throw in a patch of fur on the chest, and maybe a fur mohawk type thing along the spine. i think that'd look interesting. good job so far btw.

Hi guys.

This is just a sketch. Now that I have got this I will gather the relevant reference and wing it.

A lot will change I am guessing, but crits are still welcome!

Thing that need changing:

Head reduction
More body showing
Less human eyes
Natural hair/fur
Redo a drawing layer
Think about the colours

I am thinking of this creature as a frog and part marsupial. Too much frog right now. Maybe I could have him catching a fly or dragonfly.

Mike - thanks for the paint over, I tried getting the head looking like a cereal box on its side but i think the perspective issues were more obvious/and trickier than i thought. I was going to put more muscel structures into the creature in other areas but leave the side part of the neck for the gills, but i think it needs to be consistant all over the animal to make it work now.
Thanks for the time mike.

First ever attempt at C.O.W (After hearing the sound, I had little or no choice about making an attempt. Who on earth could resist some sort of warbling aquatic chipmunk?)Here's the concept.

Going for a sort of amphibious pelican with wattles (flappy neck things). hopefully it's not too bad. Planning to do a painting soon. C&C on design is very much appreciated.

Here's the beginnings of mine. The notion here is that the creature's mouth makes that sort of baby-talk gibbering while the fins on its back vibrate to make the buzzing sound under the gibber. His eyeballs are located on his chest under the mouth and ears, because I figure his ears are the primary sense organ. Right now I'm most perplexed with what to do about his tail. I've done several versions and liked none of them. Gotta get away from it for a little while and come back with fresh eyes. :)

Searious: I think its a great idea. Quick crit. I think the nose is a little confusing, is this a side profile? or is he semi facing us? The dark indent effect you have below the eye is misleading to me, and the anatomy of the leg is a little off, kinda looks twisted, cant wait to see the finished product ;)

UCT: yah. maybe shrimps the way to go. Definitely shorter on the tail though, you're right. Apparently I have a talent both this week and last for starting out with a front heavy or back heavy critter. ;)

Hi, idea is so cool so I would like to try. This is my first attempt and as you can see I didn't bring any original concept :P but it's just a WIP, so I think I will add some extras ;)...

BTW, cool entries guys.

Jakkas - when I'm looking at your works I'm proud in fact of that I'm Polish :P but only then, 'cause I don't like Poland anyway...

Arteater - your idea is so cool, I like those kind of creatures ;)

So here is my WIP:

Update

And I'm still thinking how to make a body, only with feather, only with fur or maybe fur on the bottom of the body and Feather on the back and his little wings? We will see :P...

The Birdy Fisherman. My idea is that a relative of the angler fish family has evolved over time to instead hunt birds in the swamps and rainforests. Their tongue like appendage comes out of their mouths and makes the funny little noise from the soundbite. The birds are attracted to the noise then try to eat the little wormy thing poking out of the water, becoming dinner themselves.

Here is a quick sketch of the general idea, although for the final I want to take more of a birds eye view.

here is a sketch of my creature that i thought of, i thought of a Raptor, ostrich and a monkey. i think overall he looks good and believable, something that would make that weird flangy sound. speaking of monkeys and gibbons, they sure do vocalize in interesting ways. i'm currently painting it at the moment. Is it allowed to have multiples of the same creature in one image?

WIP. The idea is that the creature puts its mouth under water, where the noises emanate from the markings on the beak. For some reason the noises attract the local fish, who proceed to swim underneath the beak. Then, as you can imagine, the beak is snapped shut, and the birdy is fed. The longer warble is just the normal vocal sound for the animal.

http://pratt.edu/~mcorrier/Art/Loofeesh-WEB.jpg

Artist: Mike Corriero

Concept: Shallow Swamp Loofeesh
Loofeesh are a rather small, nervous, friendly, playful, harmless breed of amphibians. They have evolved from a form of fish into a winged shallow swamp dweller that contains elements of birds such as thin scaled fins mimicking wings and webbed hind legs. These large finned appendages allow the Loofeesh to quickly make its way from one tree to the next. They flap these wings but usually in short spurts and glide their way over hundreds of feet. During the flight they will dive and weave after insects and other small food sources.
They also contain smaller forelimbs for climbing and other more mobile actions. These hind legs are used for additional height when jumping out of the water for their food as well as slowly treading on top of the water at night. They are capable of holding their breath for many hours though like most amphibians and aquatic mammals they do eventually need to surface for oxygen. At night the shallow clear swamps are filled with a deafening echo of the Loofeesh' mating calls.
Some of the noises are playful, others are purely for attracting the opposite sex. Loofeesh will run around, scurrying, swimming, gliding and jumping about during the day but the majority of them are much more active at night. Reproduction is something of a mystery though because unlike amphibians, fish or birds, the babies are born fully active often in pairs of two. The babies are approximately the size of a tadpole and they use their suction-like forelimbs to hold on to their mothers back between the protective fins until they are old enough to fend for themselves.

Cloister: No fair, your creature looks gayer than mine does. I'll have to gay mine up a little more. Time to bust out the fuschia feathers.... ;)

EDIT: okay, so no feathers. But, Scorge's comment about the teeth made me knock them out altogether, add a tongue... and then I was reminded that in the middle of the sound file, the creature sounds like it's blowing bubbles... hence, the rework:

Michael Jaecks@- A quick note about presentation. Crop your negative space (unless you planned on adding some additional elements there). Then once cropped, make sure you leave enough room for the concept to breathe ie;(left, top right, bottom) below the feet and ground plain and above the head. I also adjusted the background it sits on to a slightly different hue so the creatures color scheme pops and stands out more. Some minute texture was added as well..just because I always think that if you're going to place your creature on a blank background, it should have just a touch of either brush strokes or texture for some minor added interest. You could move the scale chart to the top left for a better presentation, filling that space and allowing you to crop the right side. A white border might look good on this one as well.

This all seems very rudimentary and perhaps (tediously nit picking), but I think it would make for a much better presentation. No crit on the concept itself, just the layout and background color. Btw - Love your creature and the change to the mouth and the bubbles are fucking interesting as hell dude ;)

MJ: Nice progress - fantastic head there. The scales are a bit monotonous, having basically the same size throughout. Some variations there will make the thighs and the main body more interesting. (A suggestion on this point is to bring in some "invisible" yellows or greens, to lift all that purple and make it even more vibrant)

Whoo hoo! Thanks for the kind words, crits from all and the paint-over from Mike. Truth be told I wasn't sure if I was going to knock in a background or not. And originally I considered more info for the thumbnail schematic side, but now that I've switched to bubbles I may not need it. I had some thoughts about shifted visual spectrums and vestigal nearly blind eyes and the need for echolocation... but the bubbles seem to be doing all the talking for me. I may drop the excess pseudoscience. Nice finish on the BG, Mike, can I just steal that? ;) Nah, I'll figure out what you did. :)

Cloister you havent had enough of my greens yet? :)

My sound creature uses the placenta like part of it's stomach and long body to create various different sounds that range from high to low tones. It can trick its prey into thinking that it is a small creature by definition of it's sound. The sound creature also has an excellent sense of smell which it uses to navigate it's way through the wet cave borrows of it's habitat. It also uses its sense of smell to track it's prey. This creature is not as much of a hunter as it is a scavenger, but it will attack anything smaller than it if there are no other options for food.

March 29th, 2008, 05:14 PM
Ok my idea for the creature came from an in joke between a friend and myself that Davi's sound clip really put me in mind of (btw, glad to hear I'm not the only one who's been running around goin "loloo loloo lollup" before crawling into my bed for the past few nights! ;) )

the Loloo-Lolup - Descended from a race of gliding shrews it is an amphibious creature that powers along underwater looking for food in the form of insects (water boatmen, caddis fly larvae etc.) like its shrew ancestors it has to eat constantly due to its high metabolic rate.

The sound you can hear being picked up by our high tech underwater microphone is produced by the Lolup's vestigial glide flaps vibrating in the current as it races around the streambed. This sound is thought to act as an alert, warning other Lolups not to infringe the resident creatures territory.

Second, this newest painting of yours is probably the most confident piece you've done for COW. And it's really interesting and consistent stylistically. Really I think you've made some steps forward with this one. Nicely done.

Yoitisi- That's looking FUCKING awesome ;)

Glad I could help Mike, looks great..definitely improves the image without having to spend a lot of time on the environment for what is a creature concept activity. Especially when the sound already lets us know the type of habitat it generally lives in.

Arteater- crazy texture on the bare skin..it's impressive. As mentioned by someone else, just put a bit of extra time on the spikes ie; lighting, shadow, texture..make them so they don't appear as white shapes slapped on top of the drawing, but rather so they fit 3-dimensionally on him. The texture of the skin and fur are handled very well.

My creature creates sound by going into the water, inflating its neck air sacks and forcing the air through an organ within its mouth beneath the tongue. The sound is kind of a gurgling whining sound.
I think I'm going to call it "Mann's Gurgling Lizard" after Hubert Mann, the intrepid scientist that braved the amazon to find this little guy. :P
As for the art, I've decided to make it a finished pencil illustration and then do an overlay of color in photoshop. My last few attempts at working mostly in photoshop have fallen on their butts so hopefully this will look far better when finished.

scorge: It turned out very well. Where'd you get that fancy new fern brush?

scorge

Thanks MJ. I made that brush originally for tree leaves, but it actually created a killer fern instead. Experimentation at its finest. Still kind of feel like a cheater for using it.

Scorge:Great job, the frog is awesome too

Jhagen22:Nice work, I hope you can finish. 1 crit, The inside of the opened mouth creature should have a little more structure and anatomy, and not so dark, but the mouth parts rock! keep it up

Arteater - I agree with what you said about the mouth so I made a quick change and it looks a bit better. If I had the time, I'd do more but I think it looks okay.
By the way, I love your creature. Kick-ass design!
UCT - The alieny look to your critter is really appealing. Nice job!
Desviaciion - Cool bat guy there. Looking forward to the finished product.
JakkaS - I like the creature you have there. Kind of has a plucked bird look to it.
Mike Corriero - Looks great! Doesn't look much like my first sketch though...looks better! :)
Aedant - Good start on your creature.
Tyrus - Cute little creatures. Maybe punch up the values?
edelia - Cool, looks like a Miyazaki-type of creature.
Rist - Weird creature there. Cool, but weird. :P
E.Silva - I like the shot of how it fishes there. Looking good.
Michael Jaecks - Nice looking creature, but as always what really gets me is your painting style. Quite nice!
DECYPL - Very fun entry!
mrprank - Great looking horror type of creature!
Searious - Looks good. Good looking aquatic critter.
Matteo'89 - Nice colorful bird-like creature. Would like to see it rendered a bit more.
Lucid_Concepts - Fun wip. Keep it up.
REGNIRUTH - They look great. My only crit would be maybe some shadows on the foreground creatures to help to ground them.
mcmatz - I have to say that yours is the most original take on this in my opinion. Going through them all, it's monster, creature, creature, monster, furry teddy bear type of critter? lol cool. Hope to see if finished. :)
Nathradas - Really like the neck anatomy on your creature.
Ramitxon - Eagerly awaiting seeing your creature in color.
davi - Nice fun creature.
scorge - Great original look to your creature.
VirtualSurreality - Great work so far. The head is very nicely rendered.
marius d - Crazy monster you've got going so far. Interested in seeing it pushed further.
Lege1 - Dude, that is a crazy critter you've got there! That's just nuts. Heh, I like it!
Atastrophea - I like the flying fox look to your creature. What sort of coloring/painting style did you use?
nuru - I like the flying shlumpy look to that creature of yours. Hope to see it finished.
Oni Rem - I can't help but chuckle looking at your critter. Looks great! I hope you can finish it.
yoitisi - Great design man! That space in the chest is a nice touch.
TRUZART - I agree that it looks like you were inspired by dinos. Very cool take on it!
Lander - Good creature! I like the natural pose. Looks nice and realistic.
benu - I like it. Good job on your wip so far.

...man that was a lot of crits to do in one post!

Heh, forgot to add on my own wip progress shot.

Changed the mouth on the critter up front. And I've started to put down color. The color will be lighter as I want the pencils to show through.

Atastrophea - I like the flying fox look to your creature. What sort of coloring/painting style did you use?

Hey, thanks for feedback :) I dont know if you can call it a style, its a mix of pencil, pen, charcoal, gouache, acrylic and watercolour as I've run out of money and am down to the dregs of my 2d art materials until my next student loan :bashful:
I like the expression on yours - he looks like hes just about to lick his eyeball lol. you seem to have lost a little of the lovely textuire going from b/w to colour? although maybe thats just cause your colour wip is smaller....

I've tried to revise it a bit, got some helpful crits from some friends and borrowed my parents scanner so I could try fiddling with the levels a bit and getting it a bit lighter/clearer. not sure how successful that was though :S

Does anyone think this is worth entering into the final thread? (I'm a bit dubious as theres so many amazing entries on here) might I get more helpful crits if I put it into the finals though?

jhagen and mariusd- thanks for your comments.
jhagen- I like the creature's mouth a lot. The outlines of the one in the background could be thinner especially on the lighted side.
lander- mmh, delicious green. I like the pose, too.

Fozz: Will you be posting the sound final in the voting thread? I think it would be cool for non-participating voters to hear the sound we had to work from. :)

Fozzy: Has anyone ever thought of making a calendar out of the C.O.W. winners?? It would probably be too hard to get all the rights from all the artists, but it would be a kick ass calendar ;)
