Topic: Deployable Repair Platform

Background: For those who have never played a RTS game, this is a unit often found in those games. To support the troops out in the field and to keep them alive longer, this unit comes along and deploys right behind the frontlines to provide repairs and supplies.

In order to fulfill its duty, the DRP should be mobile, but once close to the battlefield it unpacks/deploys into a repair platform and is no longer mobile. It offers a place to repair vehicles and resupply them, and it may even include an aid station for infantry. Once the battle is over, it can be either left behind or it packs up and becomes mobile again.

In order to make it to poll this time, show both stages: packed and deployed! The deadline is not in a week but more like two weeks for this one, so there should be enough time to come up with two rendered images :)

Brief:
1. Design and draw a Deployable Repair Platform!
2. Show both the deployed and packed version of it!
2. That's it... now draw!

Deadline: Thursday April 3

Well, I shall give this one a try. Now to come up with an idea. Going for a pod type theme. WIP of course. Got lots more to do to make it full looking.

OPEN:

CLOSED:

Large pod that is dropped from airplane above the battlefield. Opens up and folds out into two sides, one side that is for a hospital of sorts, the other is for vehicles.

24 people in hospital

6 vehicles in mechanics

Ok, done with color blocking. Now for accessories like monitors, cars, people, other pods falling, and water supply.

Yeah, as long as its readable and not sketchy all over the place. Shoot for the finished product.

well I am not exactly good so when meaning finished you meang those uber duper super realixtic renders or just something that dont look like a skecht

cuz it will be black and white made by pencil

<RJMC>: Render it as far as you can get it. Check past winners if you're unsure if yours is sketchy/finished.

and about the design

by repair platform it means just the platform only and no components like machinery or a vehicle being repared and such?

<RJMC>: As long as it's your final design and includes enough information that conveys your design it's cool. A vehicle being repaired is optional but not required.

Hey guys!

Going to try and get this done in the next couple of days. Here's the early stages:

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y95/oishiiniku/deployable_thumbs.jpg
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y95/oishiiniku/deployable_sideon.jpg

So the front part rotates down and opens to reveal multiple weapon charging stations. The back section contains an aid station and 'stretcher' compartment for transporting injured soldiers from the battlefield (one at a time).

I'm going to build it in 3d again so I guess it won't make the poll (that's if I get it done on time, anyway), but that's cool.

Looking forward to seeing the other entries progress.

Ta, Nick.

Oishiiniku: If you do a paintover on your 3d model like you did on that harvester piece, no way that it stays out of the poll :) Just finish it in time...

oishiiniku Hey man! Pretty killer concept you have there already. I like the smaller size idea a lot.

Digital Blacksmith Any more progress on this one? Heh, you're further than me though.

Right now I just have some thumbs. I'm deciding between 1 or 3. Or I'll have to do more. They are just the undeployed element.

I had a paintover on this one but I lost it somewhere lol.

And the deployed version.

I plan on doing bigger lineart on illustration board and maaybe getting them some color. Might just be grayscale for now.

Matsign, Tsujni: Good to see some more work coming in :)

I've got the feeling this round will not see many entries :(

I've put some things together on paper which should be finished by Thursday. Seems odd that there isn't more interest so far, there seemed to be a lot of possibilities for the topic.

tried some at-at stuff with six legs and two wings, which move to the ground while kneeing down,so that there is a cave under the walker, but it doesn't work well yet...

made a WIP, but I think i stagnate right now,Comments and Crits very welcome!

For everyone: Deadline is Sunday 6th

I just realized I'll be at the German Sketchmeet when the deadline closes (that is, when I normally close the round) so I won't be able to put up the poll. Also, I hope with this extension we'll see some more entries before the deadline :P

Hey! you just made my day! Will definitely be able to finish my entry before then.

Enjoy the Sketchmeet!

That will certainly make today less busy - thanks Yoitisi.

Funghi - I like the mamoth look the deployed platfrom but perhaps you want to strengthen the 'repair' elements of the design. Maybe a larger hanger, more repair functions etc. - other things to suggest function. At the moment if might be hard to see it working as a repair function without the description.

Actually i have no idea how the repair function should work like.
I just thought, that the will be a cave under the giant "ant",and u see some flashes through the legs, and the tank comes out healthy again.^^

There are plenty of things I suppose, suggestions of welding arc like you've mentioned are a good idea and for something high-tech like yours maybe you could look to a automated assembley line for inspiration, like in a car factory. Parts coming in and being replaced amunition changes etc.

Possibley a finished version.
I'm not too happy with the presentation, will see whether I can sort it out with fresh eyes in a bit.

Hey Guys!

There are some really interesting and diverse takes on the topic. On reflection, I think that my vehicle is too small to be called a platform, but what the hey! The top section contains the ammo/repair equipment and it rotates and slides down the front of the vehicle when in use. Some kind of medibot lives in the rear section.

Looking forward to the next topic!

oishiiniku - you utter bast*d, that's so nice. I'd love to see a step by step for the process. I'd guess that you've used a 3D model for a base but it blends in very nicely and there are nice elements of overall texture (like in the shadows etc).

You're right I suppose about it being a bit on the small side, depends on what kind of things it's supporting.

---------------------------------------------------------

I'll save the rest of my comments for after everythings been put together.

Sorry for the delay all, I'm still kind of recovering from the workshop :P I hope I have some time today to set up the poll and start the new round.

Poll will be up in a minute :) I'm not going to play the tough art director this time, as we have not that much entries :( WIP's will not be taken to poll though.

Edit: Poll: IDW #66: Deployable Repair Platform - Voting (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=122975)
