I've been studying with William Whitaker (http://www.williamwhitaker.com/) for a little over a year now, so I thought I'd make a post with some of my favorite pieces from the past year.
Master copy--Charles Bargue
Master copy--Nicolai Fechin
Oil still lifes
Visit the sketchbook link in my signature to see everything I've done, as well as some process pics. :)

Your portraits are beautiful and that last painting is unreal. Great work!
March 23rd, 2008, 10:05 PM
Those still life's are beautiful, as is that portrait. I could see the whitaker influence in that one before I read your post. Impressive body of work.
March 23rd, 2008, 10:17 PM
Maybe I should study under Whitaker.
These are great, Emily.
Your progress is impressive.
I hope you keep it up,
and keep us posted.

March 23rd, 2008, 10:44 PM
These are really great studies!
They remind me that i should let my wacom rest from a time to time and get back to some traditional practise.
March 23rd, 2008, 10:58 PM
Such beautiful work! Truly.
March 23rd, 2008, 11:12 PM

March 24th, 2008, 06:02 AM
wowsers.. em this is definately some impressive work! your oils are gorgeous, and the last portrait literally saw my jaw drop to the floor. i wish i had both the time and access to someone to study under with traditional media.. you are very fortunate to have such a proficient mentor :)
March 24th, 2008, 06:30 AM
Whitaker's studio system clearly suits you very well Emily. There is an involvement with the copies that goes well beyond the great skill you are mastering. The oil portrait shows how comfortable you are with your means because you are saying so much with such quiet forms. Lovely work.
We learn the tools of our trade so that we can build the house that is the painting as well as possible. This is all that we can ever have control of - whether the painting has 'magic' or 'that something' can never be put there deliberately. We must simply build well and as conscientiously as we possibly can, since that is where love of what we do is to be realised.
And that is when the house can become a home.
March 24th, 2008, 09:24 AM
I'm really speechless. I cannot express how I feel exactly, but I will try:
All your studies are beautiful, that last Portrait WOW!! just Gorgeous! It's more then impressive to me, you seem to be heading into something beyond skill. Your portraits are creating their own personality that I can believe.
I wonder what you will do next. :)
March 24th, 2008, 11:24 AM
I've told you before how great these all are but seeing them together
is even more impressive. 5 stars for sure.

Very very nice Emily. The portrait copies are so nice. Very intresting copies. Where did you find the prints?
I've done the same bargue as the one you had at the top of your post. Very subtle.
How long have you been studying under Whitaker?
And the last oil portrait is stunning. How long did it take? From life right?
The progress yo've done is excellent. I admire and wish you the best of luck you. :)
March 24th, 2008, 01:21 PM

Haven't done it in a while but this deserves it: BEST OF CA
March 24th, 2008, 02:17 PM
i think of everyone on ca, I am most proud of you and mindcandyman. You have made such rapid growth that I must only bow with respect.
The thing that you bring that you do not get from william is the most important part...and that is your ability to capture the moment and capture the soul.
I look foward to seeing what you do now that your ability to do studies has reached a professional level.
Do you have plans to do any work with more narrative or deeper content? What are the next steps for you in Williams program? Multiple figure? Curious....
March 24th, 2008, 02:32 PM

Emily, seeing your portfolio at the Work Shop was a treat - seeing your further work here has been just awesome. I can not tell you how envious I am of you (in a good, healthy way :) )
All the best, and looking forward to seeing more of your beautiful work.

March 24th, 2008, 08:15 PM
Absolutely stunning Emily. The portrait looks alive.
March 24th, 2008, 09:38 PM
Lovely inspiring work. I admire your sensitivity to both subject and medium, particularly the painted figure. The presence and power of the detail of the head is fantastic, but, well, I'm concerned about the form of the torso getting lost in the drapery, it seems too light and diaphanous to so thoroughly obscure the lines of the body.

Serpian: You can be sure that everything is measured correctly ;-)
emily: Bill once gave me the links to your and stacys sketchbooks here at CA and I am amazed about your development. It motivated me to do a bargue too :-) thank you for that
March 29th, 2008, 10:19 PM
Emily, I hope these pieces give you a sense of meaning and richness that you can be proud of. Its certainly clear that people on this forum feel that way about your work already...including me. Looking forward to seeing more =)

I just want to thank you all for the kind words. This was my first time posting in Finally Finished, and you are all so nice. :)
Interceptor--thanks so much for all of the support you've given me. :) And thanks for posting first!
LifeWontWait--Everything should work now.
Jodo--thanks so much!
light--thanks. Yeah, my style is something that I'm slowly developing, hopefully. :)

Elwell--Thank you so much, it means a lot. :)
nobody knows--thank you :)
Jessica Hook--thanks so much, Jess. :)
ricksmith--yeah, I have a pic taken from when it was about halfway done. I worked from a model once a week for a couple of months, then I finished up with a photo because the pose ended.
Android--Thank you, Andrew. I passed on your message. :)
Maestro Andres--thank you!
stoph--thanks, you are so kind. :)
Chris Bennett--thank you so much for your thoughtful reply. I have really enjoyed watching the work you have been posting recently.
poise--Your words mean a lot, Tiff. I'm really glad you get that feeling from my work.
Craig D--thanks so much, Craig. I hope all is well. :)
Pencilator--I got the prints from Whitaker's Bargue book and made photocopies. I've been studying under him a little over a year. See my reply to ricksmith above regarding the time spent on the portrait.
PatriciaS--thanks so much, roomie! :)
persian-Miniaturist--one year, I taught art to a class of 11 and 12 year old kids, so I guess that qualifies!
m@.--thank you. :) I still remember you beat me in LMS a year or so ago. :)
Mike Corriero--Thank you so much Mike, I'm honored. Yeah, Whitaker is quite an amazing teacher.
Jason Manley--Thank you so much for your kind words, Jason. They mean a lot to me. I will always be grateful that I connected with Whitaker at the San Francisco workshop. For what I plan to do next, I want to do some figurative work with some subtle symbolic content. Bill is letting me choose what projects I want to do based on what moves me.
James Kei--thanks so much! :)
Layil--thanks Layil! I'm glad to see your progress, too.
Oregano--hehe I remember sitting next to you at the workshop then suddenly realizing who you were. So nice to meet you, and thanks. :)
agreeable--thanks so much, I'm glad the painting looks that way to you. :)
Cory Hinman--thank you very much. The fabric is meant to be opaque, but I am interested in how well it reads to viewers so I really appreciate your feedback.
Lone Wolf--thank you.
Chuck,mate.--Thanks so much, Pat. :)

Serpian--I feel pretty confident that I measured correctly, but you could be totally right. Sometimes you don't see things when you've been looking at something too long.
bjoern3000--awesome. I think it is one of the best exercises for really improving your eye.
cateaic --thanks so much for those kind words.

Emily I think I have said it a million times, but I will say it again. Your work is just astounding! <3
April 6th, 2008, 05:36 AM
this might sound like a silly criticism, but i dont like how the girl in the portrait is dressed up as if to match the painting style. its boring.
its 2008, why not have a relevant subject? or were you at a renaissance fair
April 6th, 2008, 07:31 AM

That loaf of bread just made me realize that I'm very, very, very hungry - haha
I told you this in Seattle Emily but I will tell you again. You have grown more in one year than any artist I have seen ever. It's like you used some kind of magic artifact or made a deal with the devil... +20 ring of mad artistic skill : ) Is there something that you are not tell us... come on eg... confess ; )
