wow, they're cool...
i love the soft apparance of the lightly drawn page. makes everything look very soft and "featherly".
the unicorn is sweet! less shading is more, definitely... the legs are unbelievably well done: next to no work except a hand full of hatchings and the outline, yet so well defined.
the only issue i find is the mouth looks a bit off perspective wise but this is secondary.
edit: ahg, you posted the last one while i typed.
oh my f*ing god! i love it!

i have questions galore!
1) What material do you sketch with?
2) How old are you?
3) My god why can't i draw like you?
4) Whats your web site address?
rubygenesis
October 29th, 2002, 02:44 PM
Hmmm, I should mention that in the last picture post I did not draw the horse body completly from my head i had a few refs.
1)Hey sin, I use all sorts of stuff from
staedtler pencils F,H,2H,HB
paper mate ball point pens,
pilot pens like the G-tec C4 and Bravo
2) I am 23.
3) Thats a good question, if you'd like to draw like me I suggest taking at least one year of life drawing (just 3 hours once a week) go to the zoo too. Yes the animals move and wont hold still! this teaches you to take in the scene quickly and lay your lines down for immediate form. And of course draw what tickles yur fancy, draw from other art that you like too its good practice and will help you on later works of your own. hope that helps. :)
4) Just click on the little (www) button below or here www.rubygenesis.filetap.com its an old image intensive page I'm still working on an actual site.

Gotta love that pencil centaur. I normally don't like greyscale pencil rendering, especilly not smudged ones, but that one roxxors my boxxors...
Perhaps I should get back to pencil rendering. When I think of it the pencil is actually a very accurate and detailed rendering tool. There's an old Warhammer 40k artist called Paul Bonner that makes awesome pencil-ink drawings, especially the orks with the big wrinkled jaws. He used some sort of cross hatching to suggest the plane angles/shapes/forms.
I like how you kept the edge between the black and white areas almost monochromatic on the lower belly and legs, but perhaps the edge is too hard on the side of the belly cuz it's supposed to be round. Hmmm?

Ack, I'm flattered you are all too kind Really!
~Lukias: I turned up the levels in photoshop just a tad to get the 'jet black' it was really dark tho to begin with i think i used a 2 or 3B. and it was drawn on bristol board.
yes pencil renderings take forever! I cant even remember how long i spent on this one...must have been a while cause i got tired and didnt even finish it..i'll keep it on standby.
aah here is page 49 of my personal sketchbook, some concept ideas for characters of my own design (fantasy rules!) I/ve finally finished the story line for the first graphic novel, now to begin the script *joy*

November 11th, 2002, 08:40 PM
I started at noon when i fell outta bed, and finished at 6. :D What a wicked way to spend a day no?
ok guys here's how i usually do it:
1) with a staedtler H i start with a few rought thumbnails different angles see what i feel like...
then rough out the one i like larger, about 8x4 inches.
http://www.infinitejackass.com/rubygen/cen 01.jpg
2) starting with the upper half i work in what the armor will look like with an HB pencil and some references off
the net or out of books like ARMS&ARMOR a pictorial archive by Carol Belanger Grafton.
http://www.infinitejackass.com/rubygen/cen 02.jpg
3) then i fill in the lower half mostly out of my head. But Firefly Pocket Guides books
on cats/dogs/horses are helpful to have kicking around ;)
http://www.infinitejackass.com/rubygen/cen 03.jpg
4) then i start shading in adding a few things here and there,
wip out the smudge sticks :D and probably stop here.
http://www.infinitejackass.com/rubygen/cen 04.jpg
5) now i ink using Faber-Castell PITT artist pens.
http://www.infinitejackass.com/rubygen/cen 05.jpg
6) with Letraset inks i lay down a wash with square bamboo brush to sorta set the mood.
i used cool gray pantone felts to fill in the armor.
http://www.infinitejackass.com/rubygen/cen 06.jpg
7) and lastly i play around with some light prismacolor pencils and alittle more ink for good measure...
and some gouache for his face and left sock.
http://www.infinitejackass.com/rubygen/cen 07.jpg
i will post the final image when i finish it (shortly) :)

Man, this has to be one of the longest running member-initiated threads here! Hey once again, great stuff! What exactly do they have you doing at work and what developer are you working for? You already may have stated this, so feel free to smack me upside the head if you did. I really like the space-guy and the gestures of the three creatures on the sketch page. I once posted an armored centaur as well, but that was *sniff* before the "crash of 02"... Mine didn't have historically based armor, though, which I think is a cool idea. I just wish he had some armor on his horse parts. I could be interesting to see how one would blend the two armors together...Lookin' forweard to seeing more!

Ohhh man! that bird/dinosaur/man thing is too cool! excellent anatomy and nice job blending the different animal types. How about seeing this guy with a costume? Maybe not a human-type costume, but maybe some armor or something...

very cool, for some reason i want to see more purple as a shade or something. Green looks too solid, looses some needed detail.

The way your character's body is dead forward and head dead sideways, she's almost iconographic. And your manticore looks cool. As in, he looks like he'd be cool to know.

That Manticore is really cool. I like the small details that you put in... like his nails. Awesome as always!

Please tell me you're coming up with a book .. PUHHLEEEEEAAASEEEE I WANT A HARDCOPY!!!
I like your style. The contrast of using hard anatomy with a nice soft render simply gives me the idea of "gentle strength". I find that a Toxic combination, peaceful yet powerful.
Bravo!
PS. If the book comes out I WILL BUY IT!!!
PPS. PUHLEEEAASEE LET THERE BE A BOOK!

i whole-heartedly agree with hawkwin.
do you ever digitally colour any of your stuff? if so, post it. if not, nevermind...
ps. youre now my hero
pps. have you considered writing anatomical tutorials, i only ask cause i have a lot of problems drawing faces, and all that facial configuration and stuff, and i find that studying proportions and all those line tricks never helps, i love your style, so maybe a little help?

~hawkin: Yeah!! well i was working on it, but as it turns out the story i've been writing could make a pretty kewl action rpg so i'll be spending sometime with my producer writing up a game design doc...
~sin: yeah i do, but alot of it is work related so i cant post any of it. faces eh? best thing to do is study the skull and draw from life, thats wut i did. ;) oh and a great book to own would be ALBINUS ON ANATOMY by Robert Beverly Hale and Terence Coyle.
errrg i have some sketches to post but my buddies website is down, so i have no host at the moment, should be back up shortly....bare wit me :D
cheers
