New stuff at the end!!
Now that I have a better understanding of how the attachments work I have made an attempt to reorganize my sketchbook so that the thumbnail reflects the latest sketch. To do this I had to squeeze the original first post into the second one and apologize for how that has become a little cluttered.
A little about myself. I am 28 years old and have been drawing/sketching/doodling since I can remember. I have never had any sort of "formal" art training. It was always something I wanted to do but never was able to for one reason or another.
The reason I'm starting this sketchbook is to try and motivate myself to draw more often. Back in highschool I used to draw a lot more (had a lot more free time) and I feel I've lost some of what I used to be able to do from lack of practice and would like to change that.

I've tried to keep this first group in the order of which the original drawing was done and not the painting part. These date back from about 10 years ago until present day. All painting was done in photoshop. This was prior to having picked up a tablet.

These are some sketches I did for a coworker. They are supposed to be a character in a game he wanted to make. I haven't seen him in several years though so I'm not sure if he ever did anything about it.

These were done with some sort of reference except for one where there are several on the same page and only the girl on her side and the dog is from reference. I did them from either a picture or the person/place/objects in front of me.

Some FFXI inspired stuff.

Orc/warcraft inspired sketches with the exception of the guy in the suit.
I would like to apologize ahead of time for any text that leaks onto the scans.
I do most of these in the same notebook I take class notes on and they are usually squeezed on the edges of the page.

Hey, you've got some really nice stuff here. I really like your finished landscape pieces, they really stand out. Your characters also tend to be fluid and dynamic, very nice. One thing I'd suggest, though, is that you clean up some of those sketches; pick out what lines you want from the scribbles and get rid of some of the rest. Best of luck!

When I do more planned out drawings I usually do them in pencil and try to keep the drawing clean (I don't do them very often though). Of the ones I posted, only the one with the 2 girls with the bone fist weapons, and maybe the colored landscape pieces are like that.
One of the problems with doing that with the sketches is that they are mostly in pen and can't really be altered easily, other than maybe digitally.
On that note, one of the things that really impresses me about some artists work is how clean their linework is. So it is definetly an area I would like to improve in.

Something I did real quick as a sort of test. This is my first landscape after picking up my tablet (not that I do many landscapes). I'm still not completely used to working completely digital. I used a photo as a reference. I would call it far from finished but I ran out of time and probably won't get back to it again.

I know what you mean about clean linework. I've got the same problem. I recently learned a trick from a published manga artist name Steven Cummings of Pantheon High. I met him and we talked for awhile. He told me I can skip the whole inking process by inking the pencils with a mask. I'm guessing that's what you do too :) Your work is really tight! I love some of the earlier creature designs you made, becuase they remind me alot of UNreal's monsters. Keep up the great work :) Have you considered tryin CG coloring with colored lines btw? I usually color my work in greyscale first the color with an overlay. Again, stay on your grind brah! You're doing really cool work right here.

I'm sure this is posted somewhere on here but I'll put it up again just for good measure in case anyone hasn't seen it. I assume this is what you are talking about Neogio. :)
1.First scan your drawing(of course)
2.Then change it from a background layer to a normal layer.
3.Add a layer mask to that (reveal all).
4.Click back on the art part of the layer (when you make the layer mask, the mask will automatically be selected).
5. Then select all and copy. Then deselect
6. Hold down alt and click back on the layer mask.(when you do this the art should go completely blank.)
7. Then Paste what you just copied.(on the layer mask.)
8. hit ctrl+I to invert the layer mask.
9. Click back on the art section of the layer.
10. Now fill the entire page with whatever color you want your line art to be.(usually black)
11. click back on the layer mask section of the layer and hold. Now drag the layer mask to the trash can.
12. It should ask you if you want to apply the layer mask. Say yes.
Now you have nice crisp line art with no white in it just the black and all the different shades of grey, everything else is transparent. There are other ways to do this but I have found that this leaves your origional line art completely intact except now you can put a layer under it and color. Hope this helps people out.
I learned this back when I was playing ffxi and sending in fan art to the vault thanks to Atemi (who posted how in his comments there). Up until that point I didn't know this was possible.
I've included another reallly old sketch I dug up in a lost folder on my hard drive (so as to not just be posting text).

It has been a busy week at school (midterms) and it will be even worse this next week due to the majority of assignements being due. So I haven't had time to do anything other than quick doodles unless it was related to school stuff (the municipal theater in Sao Paulo drawn from old photo reference).

Hey buddy, Nice characters. I suggest working on more dynamic poses and get in a nice mixture of poses in so you do not get stuck in a rut...meaning you have been doing standing poses a lot. You do hulk size character pretty good. You just need to clean up your lines and have better control over your pencil.
Look forward to seeing more amigo! Go get em tiger.

Digital sketch I did tonight. I still need a lot of practice on the tablet but this does seem better than my first few efforts at completely digital sketches

Just a quick 10 min sketch I did. Was trying to follow up on some of the advice and try more dynamic poses.

Cool sketchbook here. I like your style. The textures/veins and stuff on the skins of some of the older sketches (like the "devil final.jpg") are very very cool.

Something I did at work. The house design isn't mine. They wanted it to look like a drawing. I used a 3d studio image as reference. I'm not sure if houses are of any interest to people here but if so, I have a couple more in black and white I can post too.

Well scrolling down I was going to suggest to try not using such thick dark outlines too much
But once I reached the bottom it seemed your newer stuff doesnt have that problem really
So I'll just give the ol' keep up the good work :)
Tiago
April 6th, 2008, 08:32 AM
Thanks JFierce. While this might or not be the case (since I don't know which specific drawings you are refering to), a lot of my sketches are done really small. So when they get scanned (300dpi+) the lines end up looking really thick.
And just to not be posting only text here are a couple things I did for school. They aren't really anything more than excersizes in tracing (similar to what I did with the house for work) but I think the end results came out interesting.
Another thing, I already resize images to not make them too big, so if they are still too big for most people let me know and I'll shrink them down a bit more.

Small quick sketch I did during a class today. The right shoulder is off with the angle of the chest but I didn't have an eraser to change it at school. Also I think the arms, her whole body even, is a bit long.
Hopefully I will get around to a bigger update later today.
Thanks for the comments DeJakhalz.

Quick sketches I did with pen in class today.
Yesterday I forgot my drawing book that I also use for taking notes in the classroom. Today it isn't there anymore and hasn't been turned into the lost and found. I'm hoping whoever made off with it returns it soon.
Midterms are almost over. I just have one more test on monday and then hopefully I will have more free time to start drawing more often.

After seeing how effective thumbnails can be for coming up with ideas in some of the other sketchbooks on here I figured I would give some a try while also working on poses. While I don't really think mine came out very good here they are anyways for you guys to critique. They are sorta jumbled up with some non thumbnail stuff too. I used references for several of the poses.

I did some more work on the backround this morning. She is supposed to be floating/flying and right now it looks like she could be standing on the ice so that will probably get changed. I'm also not too happy with the way I've rendered the ice but don't really have any ideas on how to change it atm.

What started out as a quick sketch/study turned out into something a little more detailed. I have been working on it little by little during classes when there are no notes to take and it's still unfinished.
There wasn't much thought put into the actual design and the right arm doesn't really match with the design of the left arm.
It has been a while since I actually spent this much time on a pencil drawing so in that regard I am pleased. C&C is welcome as always.

Hey, I really like the ice woman, I think she looks great.
Only crit i can see is maybe add a little more fog or mist in the backround, I just kinda figure there would be a lot of fog/mist in a ice cave, I could be completely wrong. Also I think she needs to be incorperated in the backround more (i dunno if i worded that right) It kind looks like shes just pasted right on the backround. Maybe add a cast shadow from her on the ice. Also I noticed that she is draw with really clean sharp lines, and the lines of the backround are more fuzzy, maybe making the lines of the ice in the foreround as sharp as she is will make it like she's more of a part of the backround.
All in all though everything looks great, your thumbnails are really fun to look at. Keep up the good work!
Tiago

I did some more work on the ice woman. I fixed up her hair some and bulked up her arms and back a bit to make her seem stronger/more powerful. I also added a rough draft of the spear she had in the thumbnail. Originally on the thumbnail I had the spear angled up more and I haven't gotten around to fixing her right hand to go with the new spear position yet.
The backround still needs a lot of work and I do plan on integrating her with the backround better once I get to it, including cleaning up the lines on the backround. I also had to increase the size of the canvas some to fit the spear so thats why the left side looks crappier atm. I do plan on fixing that too.
I'm also unsure If i want to keep the black line art or not, but regardless I've been redoing it as I go along and have more of the coloring details finished, which is also why its not very consistent right now (some parts completely erased while others still have the original sketch lines).
Thanks for the comments [E]. The mist idea is a good one and something I hadn't thought of. I will see if I can get some mist in there once I get to do more work on the backround.
I have so little time to draw lately that it's kinda frustrating when I want to finish some of these drawings. Between school, the internship, and my 10 month old son, it's been difficult to find time.

likin that ice woman-im seeing a little jim lee, rob leifeld influence(?) -holler
Tiago
April 29th, 2008, 08:54 AM
Thanks for the comments DECYPL. I was never too big a fan of Leifeld but Jim Lee was probably my primary influence when I started drawing X-men back in junior high (15 years ago).
My first comics were the X-men ones Jim Lee did when they started that second X-men book. I'm more of a Joe Mad fan now but I guess the Jim Lee influences are still visible even when I'm not necessarily trying to draw like him. I also think the Jim Lee influence comes out stronger on my female characters than my male ones. I'm not quite sure why though.

well, it's definately not a detriment to your style in any case. I thought i wasn't familiar with joe mad until i revisited my comic stash- oops- hehe-
i like the choices of line and line weight you use- i dont think it would be hard to ink some of them and thats something i have always had trouble with is concvincing line work-
