NEW INTRO:
Hi guys,
My name is still Amirah - but i've just turned 23! I am currently working as a rotoscope artist in Dneg. (I have forgotten 85% of my animation skills but i animate masks really well :P) I have been away for the longest time - and for the most time, I have been working on my demo reel and before i got the job there. I'm happy to say that i've managed to work for the coolest movies out there. But due to the fact that I've been only thinking of work and my silly personal/financial problems - I've totally neglected my drawing/painting and i plan to change that - thus the resurrection of this sketchbook! AWWW YEAHHHHH
HEY GUYS! These are old stuff. To see my newer works, please go to the latest page. :D
Hi guys,
My name is Amirah. I'm 19 and i've just graduated from my design course. I specialise in animation, but we learnt a whole lot there, from motion graphics, digital imaging to crazy 3D stuff. I've always been a neither-here-nor-there kind of person. Meaning jack-of-all-trades and master of none. @_@
I fell in love with painting digitally recently so i really want to pick it up. Problem is i'm really not that good at drawing now, but i hope to improve as much as i can. You guys are really great people and the works here really keep me inspired to be better. So here goes!

Some more sketches. Yes! I am Bridgeman's desciple(<---is that how you spell it? @.@)
And yes, i lost my pencil. and i cant seem to find another to continue drawing. WAH. i'm scared of using a medium i cant undo with. pens are scary. LOL.
:dead:

Good start, you are doing those studies nicely
try posemaniacs and just draw. Have a kind of B-files drawing book when you feel you are not getting anything worth showing so you can draw without feeling you have to achieve something (this helps for me as stress reliever) (besides you draw MORE)
shamandalie
March 30th, 2008, 03:05 PM
Thank you Nettle_Mountain for the comment! Yeppy, posemaniacs is love! I tend to buy many many sketchbooks and forget about them later so now i still have 4 sketchies that are empty. :P
I felt like learning some paint stuff so i'm giving a go at The Peer Project V2 (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=76955) for now.
This my bally!

i feel very sad nowadays cause i'm not able to draw as much as i used to. I *finally*have a permanent 8.30am - 6.30pm job, and though i enjoy the fact that i can finally save money to buy a new com, i'm almost always exhausted when the day ends. and i gotta sleep early so that i could be alert the next day. (i teach kids by the way.)
so i hope that something right now is better than nothing. but dont worry, when the weekend comes, DRAW AWAYY!!! i'm so looking forward to that.
bridgeman's desciple.
THE LEG. i dabbled with a pen and chinese brush too. @_@

hey man don't be down because of having little time, i'm sure there's ways to improve that. first of all, you need to refill your motivation gauge by listening to bobby chiu's podcast: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=uJowNFmuul8
after that you'll be inspired as hell. one thing that i started doing is always asking myself "do i really prefer this to drawing?", when it comes to watching tv, eating, reading and stuff like that, of course the answer is no, so by making such decisions you can actually clean your day of unnecessary stuff and this way get more time to do what you love.
keep up the studies mate, they help tons!
shamandalie
April 24th, 2008, 11:32 AM
algenpfleger thank you so much for that link and your motivation. I've totally understood now, and even if i'm busy, i will try to squeeze at least a little bit of time to draw or paint everyday!
here are more bridgeman studies! :P
Delmar
April 25th, 2008, 09:42 AM
Yay....that's the spirit!
Keep on drawing and practicing. Your studies gettin better and better. Try to get more confident with your lines. instead of 10 short strokes make one long stroke. ...try to understand the flow of the body.....e.g. you can easily draw an arm with 3-4 lines when your aware of the flow of the arm...
Keep em comin
Cheers
Andi

Thank you for the encouragement and critique Delmar!
Wheeeeee~~ these are my last few studies for bridgeman. Most probably gonna try out digital painting now. But of course i will still continue drawing!

April 28th, 2008, 03:03 AM
yo man, good to see you keeping up those studies, they're annoying but they help. remember to draw your own knees, hands, feet from life once you know what parts to look for, it teaches you a lot more than just copying from the books mkay?
Matsign
April 28th, 2008, 03:09 AM
Hi! nice to see you doing bridgman. If your soaking it up that it'll be very helpful to you. I've experienced that not one anatomy book can solve all problems, try some other ones like Andrew Loomis and hogarth. I'm just saying if you get sick of bridgman there are other options and you can bounce back and forth.
Creatures are looking kinda of asymmetrical right now. Try to mirror lines when you draw so if you draw one side don't wait to draw the other side until you make you're way around the creature or figure.
Yes and if you draw a anatomy leg, do you own next and see if you remember anything about it from the book. :)
Good advice here from others too, good luck!

April 28th, 2008, 11:07 AM
algenpfleger- thanks for checking up on me~! Your critique and encouragement is really a morale booster for me.
Matsign- thank you for your advice! I really appreciate it! I guess it's time for me to buy a new book, draw my own body parts, and go posemaniacs crazy! :muscle:
didnt do muchie, i'm exhausted. -_- i tried painting an eye and this is how it goes. i am so upset it didnt turned out nice, even with a tutorial guiding me. :frustrated: But oh well. i'll just continue trying!
Rocul
April 28th, 2008, 11:18 AM
Nice stuff and sketches! But I'd like to suggest something with your eye work, you see the skin does not have only one tone. Go ahead and check out your hand right now, see it and really look at it. You're brain might say, ahhh this is my palm, it's light colored. You might be tempted to use one shade on your palm, and use darker one for shadows and lighter ones for well... lighter areas.
But if you look closer, there will be bits of pink, red, blues, and greens on your palm, and if you want to make it as realistic as possible you have to get those tones down as well. Since the slightest change in color can change a lot in your picture's depth.
I hope I am conveying this clearly ahehehe
shamandalie
May 4th, 2008, 11:21 AM
Rocul, thanks for the comment dude! i totally understand what you mean. I guess its just me being afraid of using more colors... hehe. but i will work on it, dont worry!
but for now, thumbnails! busy busy busyyyy. XD
no ref, just simple color studies. :mittenbop:

It's been a long time since i post anything here, and i feel terrible about it. I've got alot of stuff to do for work and the rest of the time are spent on my lovelies. Heh, but there is no reason not to post anything i am sorryyyyy @.@
I have offically graduated and i finally have a diploma to show everyone! Of course that wont be the end of studying! In fact it's a start cause i know i will learn alot more here and on my own.:confident
So for now, these are another 2 of my paintings on photoshop. Each about 30-45 mins. Yea, i am slow but i'll pick it up! XD Both photo ref from terragalleria.com (http://www.terragalleria.com) again!

The Bridgman studies look great, keep up with them and you will get better in no time. Also the environments are looking pretty good as well, keep pushing the depth by messing around with contrast/ value.

May 28th, 2008, 10:45 AM
Howie - Thanks for the encouragement and comment! I noted that down, will try to work on it. >:D
I decided to try something different today so i did this erm, vector-ish piece. Takes around 5 hours. It looks only okay, but i don't mind printing it on a shirt! I loveee brown. XD :dur:

May 29th, 2008, 06:36 AM
that last one looks quite quite good, though it can be counter productive in some cases to work on stylization before the basics have been truly mastered.
when an artist realizes they can get good results without mastering different aspects of the discipline, it can be difficult to find the motivation to work on things that you know will look less successful.
i advise you to keep on with the studies - they are looking good so far
shamandalie
June 5th, 2008, 05:25 AM
ditchman - Thanks for the comment, i'll keep that in mind. :)
If only i were rich, i would stay home and paint/draw all day. Unfortunately, i have a job. :(
Had many reports to complete for the previous week and this one too, so i only manage to squeeze about 45 mins for each of this quickies. @.@ And they are not satisfactory as well. My mind is messed up. GAH.
Someone please make time slower. i need my artistic freedom.:xpld:

My workload is piling up!! NERRRRRR. Just to make sure that this sketchie doesnt stay dead, i'll post something. :)
I painted Jim Halpert, my favourite character from The Office. I just knew about this series a few months back and i am addicted to the story! I'm in the midst of season 3 now. It just gets better and better. Watch it! :D

Hi!
I did it, I did it..I clicked on your SB link...
Nice SB here...just keep doing those studies when you have the time after work.
My advice would be to focus on a couple of studies, instead of trying to cram 3 or 5 studies in whatever time you have after you get home from work.
Doing so will help you really absorb the study that your doing and you won't wear yourself out for the next days work related challenges.
( losing apencil at 2:39 in the morning is a sign you may need to get some sleep..)
Keep posting ya hear?

Vimerge - Thanks alot! Jim's pranks are awesome. :P
the_ANGRY_fillipino - Thanks for the tip! I am slowly picking it up back again and hopefullly this thread will be filled with more of my studies. Yea, i think losing my pencil is a good sign i'm sleepy. @_@ Anyway i think i work better when i'm fresh and awake :)
StarbonesCoffin - I think anatomy is like one of the most important things in drawing so it should be consistently practised. :D
FORGIVE ME O LORD OF CONCEPTART FOR I HAVE SINNED.
I have not been drawing or painting much since the last time i posted.
Aside from having so much work, my grandpa passed away and my cat died too just a week after.

Upon futher inspection you will realise i didnt blend well. :/ Women are harder to paint.

Hello, i'm from singapore as well, that last one is looking good, be sure to double check the proportions - the eyes aren't lining up properly at the moment. Values on the face could use some more highlights, doesn't look quite finished yet. It can be difficult replicating a reference - focus on the general value areas and don't get caught up on smaller details. Once you've blocked in the painting accurately, the rest is just rendering. Good job on rendering the hands, watch that index finger on the right though. What design course were you in btw?

August 26th, 2008, 11:18 AM
Hey awesome! Another Singaporean!
The community here seems to be growing!
You need to work on your observation skills. Draw ALOT from life it helps.
Also your values need work. I especially like that painting in post #26 from the office. Do more of those.
I could also use my own advice haha.
Hey...maybe if we find enough Singaporeans we can start a sketchgroup. Gather on a weekend to sketch together. I tried starting one awhile ago but nobody replied to my thread :(

the ANGRY filipino - Thank youuuu for checking up on me again! Nopey, i didnt lose my pencil :P Thanks for the comments! More sleep more work! :D:D:D
Farsh - Hi dude, i'm surprised to find someone THAT good in Singapore. You've got awesome stuff in your sketchie. Like i said i was from SIDM in NYP but now i'm just earning minimum wage doing something totally not drawing. @_@
Trying hard to get better though but my work time is crazy and usually at the end of the day i'm too pooped out to do anything. :/
Thanks for the critique, i really appreciate it and will work on the values and proportion more! :)
mc2mc2 - Hello mello! Thanks for dropping by and the advice as well! Would love to have a sketchgroup but like i said, time is so constrained. :/ If we were to start one, i'm not sure if i could keep up. But if you do, please inform me! I would love to drop by when i'm free. :)
crackin - Thanks for your words of encouragement!
Okay, now that the fasting month have started, i can spend more time drawing instead of eating! :P Hehe, just a teeny weeny update.
Those thumbies that i tagged 'not mine' were done by my other half. He is my inspiration and he draws/paints SO much better than me. He drew that bit to teach me some stuff about proportion. I'm eternally grateful. :tihi:

September 1st, 2008, 11:46 AM
Good to see you working at it. Drawing random stuff never hurts, its a good way to have fun and if you can learn something from it, all the more awesome. Some of your faces still need more work, think of them as objects, and not people. The bottom right corner guy is pretty good though, just be more confident in your lines. For the record, mister spastic tree is awesome. :P
shamandalie
September 9th, 2008, 11:21 AM
Farsh - Dude i'm really appreciative of your comments. Thanks so much, i'll work on it. And mister spastic tree is spastic, not awesome. /m\

Lots of good advice here already, not much for me to add on.. Keep painting! and thanks for stopping by my sb!

September 17th, 2008, 05:47 AM
the ANGRY filipino - Nah, i'm not good at all. You have to remember that i color pick and you don't. *bows* And you are right, the ears are off when i look at it again. :P Thanks for pointing that out.
Oh, since you are in the making toy business, why not you make the headband toy and send one over to me? Hehe. :D
Randomself - You are welcome! :) Just remember to work hard when you're schooling okay? That is where you learn most. Treasure your lecturers and ask them all the questions you can ask!
I AM AN IDIOT. Thinking that i could try out this week's CHOW. -____- Couldnt get the proportion/color/face/blending/everything actually right so i just decided to stop painting it. I'm making Scheherazade look bad.
I think i need to go back to basics and start learning to blend/paint again.
*back to Bumskee's photoshop digital painting thread*
And here's a couple more drawings.

Was trying to learn to blend a few days back. Here's my feeble attempts . :P
Farsh
September 23rd, 2008, 02:00 PM
Your fleshtones are good, and your CHOW isn't as bad as you think it is, might want to try out a few different color combos next time you try something like that. A lot of stuff we do doesn't seem to work at first, gotta experiment. Sometimes you put down the right color and whee, it works. Your drawing is improving, keep going, your blending needs more work, be patient while doing those, right now they look a bit too much like candy floss. (yum) Try using a different set of brushes perhaps?
Anyway, thanks for dropping by my SB, you're more hardworking than me right now, makes me feel bad, especially since you're working and still finding the time to churn these up. Keep up the good work!

I wouldn't worry about using tools in photoshop to help speed up and improve your workflow and art. Traditional art is a great place to shape up skills without any fancy tools and such.

Nettle_Mountain - Hey, long time no see! :D:D:D Thank you for dropping by! :D:D:D
lemming-clone- - Yea, i tend to get easily distracted with technicalities that it sometimes hinders my improvement. Thank you!
Hmm, look what happens when i put the pencil aside for a while. So embarassing to put these up, but this IS a sketchbook, so you get to see the good, the bad, and the utterly horrible! :P

managed to squeeze some time today to do a self-porty. @_@ Been busy with all the Hari Raya celebrations (Eid ul-Fitr).
My blending is still pretty noob. bah. :404sign:
Farsh
October 3rd, 2008, 07:09 PM
Selamat Hari Raya, and nice selfportrait. Watch out for a few things though, the angle where you're facing in your render is different, i assume its not intentional? If so remember to keep watching out for proportions, not a bad effort at all. Try squinting when you look at reference (dont know if anyone mentioned this to you already), so you it's more obvious where the dark spots and lit areas are. Moar!
shamandalie
October 4th, 2008, 03:04 PM
Hey Farshie, thank you for the greetings! Thanks for pointing out all the mistakes i did. When i look at it closely, i realise even the eyes are off. @_@ I'll do the squinting technique more next time.
Now eat some plums.

Poses are quite good, keep doing those, will improve if you keep it up. Don't get caught up in detailing individual parts :oneye:, try to think of things in terms of structure.

Hello :D
Thanks for popping by my sketchbook. Nice comment :)
Liking your studies, especially the anatomy ones...something I should do more but it is hard with a full-time job I definitely agree with that, so good effort..
I do have a suggestion that you could try for your skin-tones, something I did in college when studying illustration and that's using contrasting colours for shading. For example I use to use browns and dark reds then someone slapped my wrist and told me to experiment using purples, blues and greens. Then I went and looked at what colours some master impressionists and expressionists used and how and where they applied them and I learnt alot. (studying watercolour techniques is helpful for this too)
Also a technique tip: If you start by blocking the skin area with whatever you choose as your mid-tone and then apply the shading where necessary and then finally put in your highlights, but whatever do don't use plain white, always use a creamy white. A fantastic teacher I had used oils and he taught me to thin it out and apply it in layers like watercolours so that as you build up the shadow and highlights over the mid-tone and it still shows through and gives you more texture.
Anway I hope that helps.. :D See you around

Angel Intheuk- Hello! Thanks for the critique. You are right for the fact that i am afraid to use other colors for skin tones. And i'm still afraid. I guess i'll slowly introduce the technique in my practices. You've been really helpful.
Once again, thank you! :D
abiLity- Hey thanks dude! :)

Okay, i still have not scanned my sketchie yet but these are some digi paints.

vibhas_virwani - I really do hope i've improved. @_@ I'm really trying my best to get better. Thanks for watching! :)
Okay, guilty of not doing much now. Many things going on at work for the past week, so i managed to only squeeze in these studies. REALLY looking forward to the next month, i would probably have more time to draw and paint... WHEE!! :steph:

Hey shamandalie, nice improvment !! Your anatomy studies looks really good !! Your enviros looks good too, try to play with hardness, it looks a bit blurry. And you really have to save your work as jpeg, and not as .gif, it will be better :) Keep it up

Walid D - Dude, thanks for dropping by my sketchie again! I always thought that gif files are smaller so they load faster. :P I think i'll load them in jpeg now. :D
Okay not much update, just a preview on what i'm doing now. Those music junkies might know who he is. Unless it looks so bad no one recognizes. @_@

Hey lilnebo - Thanks for dropping by. You keep it up too, alright? Being young has its advantages. When you are my age, you'll be great!
here are 2 speedies for the day. The first one is just random value studies and the second is referenced from terragalleria (http://www.terragalleria.com/).
Darn it, i'm not painting as fast or as well enough. @_@ But will try to do better! :D

Hey youve got some really great stuff, look at the hands on the portrait of the woman from the office, those have a great feeling of depth, i dont understand why you never managed to bring that through to pencil/portraits, maybe its something to do with your approach? either way you've shown you can create that effect just now you need to build on it.

Hey, don't leave your drawing at the side, it's really key. Painting is great, and you're doing fine with it, but drawing is your ticket to the next level now.
Btw: You should watch the REAL Office (UK), it's way more... well, REAL.
Now let's see those drawings! (they don't call it SKETCHbook for nothing)
Keep up the good stuff!

zalxemptyx - I was rushing dear. @_@ You know i am horrible at proportions. Moo moo, any advice is good advice from you love. :asskisser:
Bill - Great to know people laugh at my pathetic jokes! :P Joker in batman was just awesome. I miss Heath Ledger. :( Thanks for the comment. Happy New Year to you too!
Nrx - The problem is that i had all the time back then to paint. And i guess i'm just a little better at painting than drawing traditionally. @_@
Amir the night wolf - Thanks! Will drop by later! :)
lennon - Speaking of the UK office, i did watch it but i am too dumb to understand...Is it something about British humour i guess. Our country was colonized by them but there are some jokes i still don't get.
About your critique, i think you are really right, cause this is a sketchbook, i'm not showing enough of my traditional stuff. I promise to show more in my next few posts!
I'm truly grateful to have comments by the way, thank you guys.
Just dropping by to post my EOW this time, i might probably do a POW next. My job is getting hectic, i now even have to work at home in the weekends, so i hope joining challenges will push me forward. :)

Haven't dropped by in a while, someones been busy :O
Glad to see you're still going at it :D
Castle/structure in #74 looks really good, you approached that picture well, moar of that kind of rendering pls. Confident, nice and simple. Something went right there (i dont mean the other pictures went wrong, they're cool ;))
Don't like the CHOW character as much, looks a little flat. I dont know if this is helpful advice (DISCLAIMER:i'm probably just talking out of my ass) but render characters as you would any other dead inert object. Be confident when you lay down light and shadows, don't be afraid of spoiling beauty, butcher your picture with the brush. Only one way to chisel out form.
Environments isse hard, yeah, take your time planning a scene, dont jump into rendering too soon. That's not even epic fail, not compared to some of the 'mastahpiecez' i churned out. Maybe the lighting needs reworking, and get rid of that awful green grass! If it goes against the picture, kill it. Never be afraid to use reference (i tell myself that all the time, sometimes i listen), even for outrageous scenes. Can be a very helpful visual guideline.
Btw what kind of fucking awful job makes you work at home on weekends? Seriously wtf?
Anyways, keep drawing and posting. I want to see your trad stuff too.

January 13th, 2009, 10:36 AM
Farshie - Long time no see! Thanks alot for dropping by. The 'something went right there' painting is done when my mind is at ease and i have nothing to do. But now with the new year and all the new classes i have to teach, yeh it's hard.
I am gonna listen to you for once and butcher my characters. :D I think i understand what you mean.
And thank you for the comment about the environments, i'll take note of that too.
And about jobs, a little advice. Don't work in secondary/primary schools. Ever.
I don't wanna reveal anything bad but yep.
Okay, it's true. My trads are going down the drain. I better get back at this. Some Loomis and other crap. :(

Bill - Hehe, i thought so too! Thanks for the encouragement!
Okay, this is my progress from my SP, i chose what i think is the best 16 (or a memorable ones) from the 50 i have done. When i do another 50, i'll do the same thing again. Progress is slow there too, cause i need quality work, not quantity. Back to draw draw! :D

January 15th, 2009, 12:01 PM
Woo, nice pencils, keep it up! Keep those loomis exercises coming, it will help tons. Watch your head construction in your self-portraits, some are losing the form. Definately seeing significant improvement from your earlier work. One thing about line quality though, when you draw, try to keep your lines consistent and confident, can do wonders for the image.
BTW, i worked in de lasalle primary school for my internship at SP, and i still have nightmares about it. I was a photoshop/flash/web side instructor and general saikang guy for some private educational contractor, and i'll never get those months of my life back....

Farshie - Thank you for the compliments and critique. Yes, i have been working on my hairy lines since i've started drawing. :P Can't seem to get rid of that damn habit.
OMG, THAT IS THE EXACT THING I AM DOING. Now i wonder if you actually worked for the exact company i am working for now. I will never get my one year back, but i am definitely working on my portfolio to go grab a better job as soon as i have the chance. I'm getting more sarcastic and cynical to the people around me due to work. Gotta not let it affect me. @_@

Something for my cousin. She needed it fast so it's all i could whip up in 45 mins lol. Its actually a t-shirt design, the first one is on the front (like a logo) near a corner and the other on the back.

Hi Shamandalie! Glad to see you've been at it diligently!
Although now, some of the pieces look rushed..be careful not to sacrifice learning by going too fast that you miss out on the point of the exercise.
That t shirt design looks good for something done in a short time span.
btw..I'll be in Singapore for a few days next week...umm..how strict is it there with regards to smokers like me?hehehe...

Welcome fellow Singaporean :D I see great improvement from page 1 til now. :) Work on those anatomy studies and get the proportion right. I suggest work with more black and white first before heading to the color realm. (scary place) Jason mention before, line quality is important as the shape and shading. Mine sux though but see many advises from pro in this forum saying try to go through the motion a few times before putting ur pencil onto the paper will help.

Still a little busy with stuff. Truthfully, i've been a little depressed. Well, i've seen better days. Trying my best to update my stuff, so this is how my name card is gonna look like. I based it from the old design cause it seem to have a positive response. (AWW SO CUTE!) Notice the vague status. I still don't know what i wanna do with my life but it's definitely has to do with the creative industry. @_@

Hey Shamandalie, welcome to the ssg! I like how you've been experimenting with different styles through your self-portraits, that's a great exercise! I think you could benefit from some more in-depth studies like master studies (or something like that) to help with a variety of principles. I've got to add you into my signature now...I just need to remember how to do that...I'll figure it out...hopefully. Keep updating and I'll be back!!

Hi and welcome! Yes I still need to update my sig to include you--my bad. Anyhow, great imagination on these sketches! That apple exercise really helped me with learning to blend without leaning on soft brushes and it looks like you're getting the hang of it now--just push the darks a bit and add some shine to fill it out. Oh and keep the shadow in perspective too.
I have to say I admire anyone who has the patience to draw a comic too. Will you do more?

I like that sketch! Are you going to push it further? I'd like to see you seriously challenge yourself with it because it already has a great start in terms of the way you've laid out the values. Just watch the eyes. To me they look the same size (they wouldn't be at a 3/4 view) and are a tad 'symbolic' looking. Let's see what you do! :D

Interesting pictures. I love it when artist put conversation bubbles. They are so hilarious. Hee.
I can imagine how tired u must be while drawing it after ur work. I hope you are not rushing through ur drawings for the sake of drawing because i feel u should maybe draw less but more carefully?
There are two ways of drawing from what i learn, direct and indirect. Indirect is the easier one to pick up so I started off with it too. It is basically a procedural manner of drawing where u move from stage to stage, big to small, macro to micro.. u get the idea :P I feel u should get the big shape first, correct it until it looks right before moving on to the next stage. I think when starting out, I also feel like i need to rush to details (which i still have do sometimes *bad*) but draw the overall shape first. If that dont look right, all the details doesnt matter.
Okie enough gibberish. Just draw one to two good slow studies per night!! Jiayou!! (hope u should know what it means :P)

chibimeli - Meli! Come on i can't draw clothes as well as you. The problem with me is the proportions of bodies, which is why i draw many naked people :D. If i am a diamond, I NEED A WHOLE LOT OF POLISHING. A WHOLE LOT! Thanks for dropping by dear.
Okay a mini update. Many things happened and sadly, i could not join newborn. I'm leaving my job soon, so had to complete many things before i leave (and also alot of handover notes for the new guy.) Aside from that my granny had been sick and she was hospitalized today. I really hopes she gets better. Due to the H1N1, there's no such thing as visitors staying overnight in the hospital. And only 2 visitors are allowed in at any one time. Kinda pissed of the new rules, i know granny hates being alone at night. :(
Ok, enough ranting. Gonna show at least what i have done for this unfinished newborn. I am planning to complete at least one of them.

XuperNova - Hey thanks for dropping by, i really appreciate it. :mittenbop:
Update on stuff. An old matte painting i did a while back, another painting for a friend, MY OLD BATTLE OF THE SEXES ENTRY (It's there to remind me how bad i was last year, and i really gotta improve.) and the one at the bottom is my dad's name card! :P He's a taxi driver, and he wanted one so i did a fast one for him. (He came up with that slogan by the way. :P)
Aside of all that, i have seen some theories about 10000hours. Basically people who are really good at their craft work really hard to achieve it. Okay, everyone knows that :P, but i really gotta count the hours i am drawing/painting so that i know whether my progress is constant.
SO, i'm gonna start counting it! (This does not include the time when i am doing my self-protraits though.)
For today, 2 hours.

Your anatomy studies are goin pretty well, good line too.
for your environments, try to work/look to understand atmospheric perspective,
the way further objects tends to shift colors toward the sky color and lost contrast,
it will help you selling depth.
work some composition sketches too, and basic perspective construction, it s gonna help, for sure.

You should definitely try making your last post into a huge, non-abstract illustration. It would be such a cool creative exercise. Great sketchbook! If I could offer a critique, your sketches would be much stronger if you were just a bit more confident with your lines. A teacher of mine told me once, "It is better to make a mistake with conviction than to be correct and uncertain". Sometimes making one line that isn't 'quite right' can be better than making 20 lines where the 'right one is in there, somewhere'. It's a hard habit to break, but it's something you can keep in mind literally whenever you sit down to draw. Line confidence can be developed slowly but surely.
I love that philosophy of 10,000 hours to master something.. it's less intimidating when we can put a number on it, huh? :P
Subscribed, keep up the good work!!!
shamandalie
August 24th, 2009, 04:39 AM
Ryn - Thanks alot for taking your time to critique on my sketchie. I have that problem always (you can see it in this post as well) and my lines are always insecure. I'm gonna put that "mistakes with conviction" in my head when i draw next time.
Oh and for me it's not 10,000 to master, but more for improvement. I don't think i could ever master art. It would take decades. :D
For now, some more drawings from the CA sketch meet. My drawing skills, as usual, sucks.

and don't worry about line confidence. a lot of ppl told me to work on that too--and I found myself getting really worked up over it and failing. and when I let that go it progressed on it's own naturally. Don't push it if you feel it stifling your expression.

Hey Shamandalie.
I got a good laugh out of your thread title.. "10/10000 hrs". I just remarked to one of my friends the other day, "Everyone is always going on about 10,000 hours... does anyone ever keep track?" I have been proven quite wrong, evidently! :P
Nice job on the abundance of updates. I like the perspective piece in the last one. Your lines are very fast and expressive there. Don't be afraid to put in some super straight, rigid lines to balance out the curvy, carefree ones though. That's a big problem I have, all my lines are curvy curvy curvy even when they shouldn't be. Maybe it's a girl thing?
Anyway looking forward to seeing some digi stuff! Keep it uppp!

You should do a short comic, or graphic story. You clearly have talent, but quality artists are rarely good at advertising themselves. You should make some sort of short story production with art and circulate it for marketing. If Garfield minus Garfield and MSPaint Megaman can become internet hits, you easily could. Good Luck.

i like how u finish off the guy face. it is a much stronger form then the other figures in the image. i like how you express ur strokes in the water but honestly it might go well if the whole form is base on expressionism but the clear detail of the rocks and the boat might conflict the piece as a whole. you have definitely improve

I like the building u did in post 200, maybe except that red strip of grass in the bottom left one. Kinda distract me frmo the building itself.
And good attempt in ur painting... I suggset get ur drawing down solid first before advancing to color... I think ur values on ur figure are too muted and lack volume. Try to push the form with a wider range of values.

September 29th, 2009, 08:50 PM
Keep pushing forward, valiantly forge ahead!
In that last painting, especially with the people, it would help to establish a fuller range of values.
With linework and traditional drawing and all that jazz, if you're having confidence problems, try spending a while and drawing a more developed piece, really paying attention to what you draw.
A great exercise that has helped me a good bit is to take a film you like, pause it on a scene that is really cool or brilliantly executed compostion-wise, and take an hour or two or three and just draw it, getting all the forms and values right.
Keep it up!

Okay i've been really sad lately, my grandma passed away, may she rest in peace. Haven't been very productive so i've shaved my head and "valiantly forge ahead!" (Thanks Helltroll.)
Shane Dawson (http://www.youtube.com/profile?user=ShaneDawsonTV&view=videos) WIP. Check him out, i've been doing things to cheer me up and this guy is really funny. Well to me anyway.

OKAY OKAY, i know this isn't my best. Haha, but it's been a god damn long time since i actually drew manga, almost 5 years ago? I got bored of this so i just kinda winged the background.
No drawings yet, but i promise soon! I don't have a scanner at home so it's kinda troublesome. Sorry! I have a few stuff to scan, so i'll wait till i have at least 20 pages to do a sketch dump. :D

zalxemptyx - Thanks dear <3
chibimeli - you are welcome! maybe i should sell them, i gave 5 away already. :P
OKAY PMS KILLS EVERYTHING. Sorry had to get that out of my system.
Good news, i thought my 9 year old scanner is spoilt, but after a change of wires, it still works! :D
The only problems are that it fucks up my wacom when the scanner is plugged in, and it can't really scan a full A4 cause it will cut at the sides.
The quality is not that good though, well it is old. Expect more traditional/pencil stuff soon!
For now, some sketchies, posemaniacking and Vilppu studies.
Last pic is from another Chiu-stream, topic: Fat and Scary. :P

Haaa nice stuff.. I am seeing some vilppu studies and i say keep at it. I think the one thing you are lacking now is the volume, the 3d structure. Your figure tend towards a sense of non structure. Continue reading the vilppu manual. It teaches u how to bring structure to your figures..
I like the owl btw. I think u did that well... :)

I am currently learning how to rotoscope, matte paint and do digital touchups. A little intense, i know. Rotoscoping and matte paint is for my future and digital touchups is my next job. I will be a photoshop/digital imaging artist! NO MORE TEACHING MEDIOCRE STUFF. :D I'm happy and i hope i'll be learning a lot more there.
Nothing much for now, just a matte paint. I've learnt a lot of digital touchup techniques which can be used for my future matte paints so i'm happy that they somewhat tie in together.

Look great ! I see a few things that can be improved though. You have gotten your sky color pretty correct. The reflected light on the mountains are accurate but i notice one patch that is not correct in the mid ground, just in front of the building, the slightly bluer patch. Your sky have a slight greenish tinge to it, and you might want to make the shadow area of your building similarly so. Other than that, great job !! Good luck to ur new job and good luck in ur possible future job :)

Mydrako - Thanks for spotting that out dude! I wouldn't have seen it myself.
Ditchman - Thank you!
Okay here are some sketchies and the final matte, a little color change on the front. Now, i just have to figure out how to composite in nicely. :P

Damnnn, look at all those studies! Keep up all the hard work! Maybe slow down a little, some of them look a bit rushed. Quality over quantity in all things, take time to concentrate and let those studies soak into your visual memory. Keep it up, rah rah rah!

Nice stuff old lady ! especially the matte painting which looks great ! tho i find weird that the shadow of the temple is really desaturated, whereas the shadow of shadows on the mountains looks really blue ( maybe because of the snow! ) i'm looking forward to see new matte paintings !

Thats really great !! Try to make ur brushstroke more delibrate and give it some sort of direction. I would say going along the form with it would be a good guide. and vary ur edges too. This is really a great improvement so keep it coming..!

Mydrako - Thanks for the comment dude, i think i still need to copy and learn a lot more. Still cannot draw from my head like you. @_@

chibimeli/zalxemptyx - Thanks lovelies!
I am back. These are the wee bit of stuff i did when i was gone. D:
As you can see, I've been deteriorating.
I haven't been drawing much (and sometimes not at all!) and i only have been drawing when i felt some motivation. (So, i'm back to I-CAN'T-FUCKING-DRAW-AT-ALL mode) Terrible, i know. But let's hope that i can start anew and do more work this year. Thanks for dropping by!
