Many questions run around my mind, but, here are some, I think.

Is Art a Talent? Something you are born with, born to do, maybe even your Destiny if you believe in such things. Some people think you are either born able to draw, or you're not, the people who've said this to me are the ones who can't draw lol.
or Can anyone draw? If they have the mind-set to do so. Maybe anyone can draw but people born with this talent can take it further than the people who aren't born with the Talent.

People who are Talented, do they learn faster? Absorb things quicker?

I have friends who are good artists, can draw well, but the stuff they come up with isn't too appealing, quite bland, but I have other friends, who aren't so good, but have good ideas.

To be able to draw from your imagination, is this the talent? if so I don't believe I am talented. When I draw, and put the pen to pap, I have no idea what I'm going to draw, it's almost sub-conscious; what comes out onto paper.
Is confidence a Key to creating from your mind? Having confidence in yourself, 'Yes I can draw this'.
It's all about Opinion obviously, I don't think there IS answers, but i'de like to know what people think about it all. Maybe i'm being too serious and I need to stop thinking too deeply about it, but I do that with everything I can't help myself.

This is pretty much, a mind-dump of mindless jamble. It probably makes no friggin' sense haha 'What's this guy talkin' about?'

I used to post on here quite abit, nothing spectacular, scribbles and doodles, figurative stuff, but I stopped. I'm at College and all this 3D animation stuff I'm doing, really isn't my cup of tea but It's a learning curve none-the-less.

Question: I want to learn how to paint, on Canvas, the good ol' traditional way, but I have no idea where to start, what to paint with or anything, i've never done it before, except digitally with Photoshop and Corel Painter but I dunno, I just don't enjoy it. So any Advice is good right now.

Yeah seriously wtf are you talking about? hahaha

As for learning how to paint on a canvas, the best thing you could do is look around and see if you can get some lessons from a studio or teacher somewhere. You could get instructions and learn from somewhere on this site, im sure, but there is no substitute for a real in person instructor, especially since this isnt digital art.

Unfortunately, I can't suggest anything in particular though. Sorry.

It's just like any other skill. You have to practice hard, and study. The only thing after learning the fundamentals is your creativity.

The whole 'is art an innate talent' subject is a complete waste of time and energy to think about. Stop worrying about it right now, you aren't doing yourself any favors by continuing to pursue it. The way I look at it is both creativity and artistic ability are both skills, you put time and observation into either and they will grow. The people who you think are innately endowed with some magical skill, in reality, worked towards it. Some people do learn quicker than others and have also found different mindsets in regards to art and creativity. All these things can be attained if you work at them.

I would also ditch any belief in something as harmful and ambiguous as 'destiny'. ''No fate but what we make.''

Art is made by ordinary people. What you need to worry about is leaning to be better. More importantly learn how to make YOUR art by making art you care about.

At one point, to have talent meant that someone would pay you a talent of gold or silver for your services. A talent is roughly equivilant to the weight of a man (between 30-60 kg), so to say someone 'is a talent', or 'has talent', is like saying that they're worth their weight in gold.

"During the Peloponnesian war in Ancient Greece, a talent was the amount of silver needed to pay the crew of a trireme for one month. Hellenistic mercenaries were commonly paid one drachma for every day of service, which was a good salary. 6,000 drachma made a talent. Based on this fact, assuming a crew of roughly 200 rowers paid at the basic pay rate of a junior enlisted member of the US armed forces (E-2), a talent of gold would be worth nearly $300,000. The talent as a unit of coinage is mentioned in the New Testament in Jesus' parable of the talents (Matthew 25:14-30), but although it clearly represents a large sum of money, there is nothing to show the exact value intended. This parable is the origin of the sense 'gift, skill' as used in English and other languages. There is a similar parable with different details involving the mina (unit) instead of the talent, in Luke 19:12-27."

Talent is the indulgence of passion.

Well, dunno about you guys but I out-painted Van Gogh when I was 3 years old.

... Jk. Art isn't something you're born with, but true enough it *might* get harder to adapt to at an older age... since if you're a very logical and realistic thinker it *might* be hard to become more creative and loose with your train of thought.

But even so there are little ways to train your creativity as it were. A really simple method I use is by randomly thinking of two things / nouns (or lookin' em up in the dictionary), then combining the two mentally.

Example: Monkey Skateboard; get a mental image of what that would look like, then another, then another... the first mental image could simply be a monkey on a skateboard... the next could be a hybrid monkey-skateboard, the one after that could be a skateboard with monkey designs on it or something.... etc... etc... It sounds ridiculous, and it is... but that's what makes it work. ^^;

Also: Art class. XD There'll be plenty of evening classes or something around your area to get you started.

From the dictionary:
"Natural endowment or ability of a superior quality."
Most times talent is mistaken for skill. In my opinion talent is best described as how well an individual performs a skill without education and practice. Most times it's in teenage years where talent is discovered but some people just have a natural aptitude for average and above average performance. So art is a difficult subject to determine what talent is. With hard work and practice you can surpass other "talented" or "skilled" people in your field, but there will always be an unexplainable factor within each of us that will govern the outcome of the hundreds of thousands of minute decisions we make when we paint or draw. Personalities are the unique factor in the creation of art.
