I started looking around at CA again a little recently after a break, and was immediately struck by what seems to be an influx of people from Deviantart in the critique center. When did we start getting short and unhelpful comments like 'I love it!' over there?

It comes and goes. If it really bugs you, lead by example.

an ass pat can be as helpfull as harsh crit. Sometimes the last thing you need is a guy telling you you have done everything wrong. If something diserves an ass pat by all means give it on. If not then it is understandable. A little bit of freindly motivation is never a bad thing though.

So, the first thing that I noticed was the structure within your first sentence. The wording "a little recently" is somewhat awkward and you have used a comma superfluously after "a break." That might be a style choice and while not technically incorrect it is discouraged generally. A good rule of thumb where commas are concerned is "less is more."

I am also curious if there was a particular give away by the posts that led to your perception that the newcomers were from Deviantart. Maybe there is something over there that leads posters to be unscrupulously complimentary?

Your last sentence ( <- this word was initially spelled wrong, but Ilaekae took the time to lovingly correct me) is a little confusing. You close with the prepositional phrase "over there" but I think you meant to write "here" not "there." One last point. You also used apostrophes in place of quotes around the phrase "I love it!". Not a big deal, but I thought I would point it out.

Other than those points you had a really good post. Hope that helps. Keep it up!

I loved it!

Stephen: Hmm, I suppose thats a way to look at it. I'll admit, there's at least no shortage of constructive crits most of the time.

Lyon, your post made my day :D.

Actually, as far as I know apostrophes can be used in place of quotation marks, as long as you do it consistantly...

Always try to lead up to a critique, especially one that will require some bluntness, with a soft complimentary view if you can, THEN point out the error. For example...

Lyon, that was very well done and a tribute to your patience with the less sophisticated, but...

"sentance" is spelled wrong, you idiot.

I for one am getting fed up of this Deviant Art bollacks...its just a website to put your work up on, you can be the best artist in the world, or the shittiest. I know, i know, theres a LOT of shitty artists over there but dont bloody categorize everyone ok. Cheers.

Thought that as well, but I can understand that when someone is looking for critique that he/she wants to know how far it is good or bad. Just 'Oh wow that's cool!' is not really specific either. It's good to know where your doing good and/or bad.

Always try to lead up to a critique, especially one that will require some bluntness, with a soft complimentary view if you can, THEN point out the error.

A bit of both, I agree. :assspank:

I see nothing wrong with praising art, so long as the art is deserving of the praise. Though I agree that people should be more specific than just saying that they "loved it." For example, they could explain what parts they like, whether it be the composition or the use of detail or the application of the medium.

Not that this helps the artist, but others who see the posts will be able to go "hey, people like this guy's compositions, maybe I could learn something from his example."
