the originality of that title...it hurts...

anyhow, after being nagged for months to set one of these things up, I finally have, though no guarantees any of it will be all that spectacular, and surely not all of it will be good, but hopefully it will at least be worth taking a few seconds to look at...

as for me, I'm a twenty-year-old artist just trying to to reach a point where I can be happy and confident with my art, and hopefully there will be signs of improvement as this thing progresses...
should be able to update daily or close to it...

to start this off, here's a collection of some of my favourite pieces from old sketchbooks...mediums vary from pencil to ink to ballpoint pen...

all critiques and comments are much appreciated!

almost forgot this, though it's one of the most massive things i've yet attempted, taking up six alternate pages in my sketchbook...done with micron pens and so much work...
there's an even bigger version of it here: http://theumbrella.deviantart.com/art/star-eating-leviathan-71952979 if anyone's interested...

Thank god Ashley, finally. Haha! I kid, i kid. It's interesting that you posted almost all of my favorites of your work, but I'm a little disappointed that the Prince and his crown aren't in there. You know how much I love that picture, but whatever. Let me know when you're ready to go sketching tonight! I seriously can't wait for it :D

I love your work on devART and I'm glad to see your sketchbook!
I hope we get to see the sketches behind your work instead of just the stuff you post on dA.

alright, fell a bit behind, but really, as of today, should be posting new stuff everyday...so i hope...

here's a bit of a WIP shot of a picture i'm slowly developing in one of my sketchbooks...if all goes well, it will spread out quite a bit more, and be tedious but worthwhile...
also, an experiment i did wth my first try with powdered graphite...hopefully will see more of that around too...

alright quick update, i'll try to reply to all the comments and stuff tomorrow, and post something that actually looks good, not just rough sketches...

so first, a sneak peak at the rough sketch for some album art i've been commissioned to do (always open for more!)...if anyone's interested, i'll post the other progress shots as i scan them, since i do scan many...it is terribly rough at this point in time, but hopefully will be refined to a state where i can be proud of it...
and an old little doodle of the plague doctor, who i don't draw enough of...
enjoy!

crown
March 22nd, 2008, 01:22 AM
a few replies...
CrissCross: heheh good to be recognized, i guess...and yes, there will definitely be alot of other stuff other than what's on dA, not that it will necessarily be good stuff, but it will be different...
hm2k: no i don't do anything professionally, as much as i'd like to...just a bit of freelancing here and there, but otherwise still trying to build myself to the point where i can support myself profesionally...
i didn't reply to everyone, but i read all the posts and i really do appreciate all the wonderful comments...

so with that all said, have some more art!
first there is the man with piano teeth, whose been sitting in my head for the longest time and finally worked, after i tried at least four different versions of him...i know moosekleenex over on deviantart was going to attempt him as well, so we'll see if that works out...
then a quick self-portrait in photoshop, just to show how terrible my haircut is...and how short it is right now...grow hair grow...

------------------------------------------------------------------>
just finished this yesterday, thought it would be interesting to post the sketch with the final work...always find it interesting to see the difference, not that i usually change things between my final pencils and my inks...
supposedly it's a kirin, rough equivalent of a chinese unicorn...i have another sketch of it in the works, but this is all for now...
final version done with ballpoint and white gouache...

Some beautiful solid artwork here! I really love the simplicity of your drawings. The line quality is also outstanding. Keep 'em posting!

UnSharpened and Novbert: thanks for the wonderful comments, they're much appreciated...as for the paper, lately I've been drawing in a hardbound brown paper Cachet sketchbook, by Daler Rowney, that I got in a Utrecht store in San Francisco...and I have to say it's the best brown paper sketchbook I've found so far since the paper is amazingly smooth, which is hard to find in brown paper...as for a digital equivalent, not that I know of, but I could always scan in a blank sheet if you need it...
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
I finally finished my other kirin sketch yesterday, though I'm still not sure whether or not I should add more scales to it, since it might get too busy...who knows...
for now, here's what was the sketch, and the final inked version, inked with brown and black micron...

You're back! YES!

Also, if you lose the sketchbook again, it's easy to just go to your User CP and click your own link to it in your signature... Had to do that a couple times myself.

Looking forward to progress.

Imaginary: A mandala is usually a symmetrical, equally balanced design with a central focal point. You can see them around a lot, especially for religious purposes, the Tibetan monks make these amazing ones out of sand. And thanks!
Kristo Novo: Yeah, I definitely need to work more on that...I have a bit of figure drawing work lying around, just haven't had a chance to post them in here, but it's definitely one of my weaker areas...thanks for the comment!
AmontilladoAG: Thanks!
IanE: Hahah, yes I am, and that was in fact how I found it again, just took me long enough to actually think of it...I'm slow on these things some times...and Escher is awesome, I definitely didn't even think of him, but there are definitely some solid similarities...but good to know I was missed, hopefully I can keep this thing going...
-------------------------------------------------------------------->
Alright, round 2 of the mandala quest, I drew out a final line drawing of just one bird and kept doubling it and adding things to it in Photoshop, which left me with these designs...which I thought would make my decision easier, but in fact I think it just gave me more options...
Any thoughts?

Sadly I have nothing else to show other than more progressional work on that mandala design...this week: VALUE ROUGHS
Let me know if there's one you prefer or think is more effective, because I simple can't decide...
Oh, and to explain the choice of this design over the other line ones...when I started to simplify the extra wings the other more detailed one started to lose its appeal...and since it is a painting assignment and I'll be losing all the lines anyways, I figured it would be best to go with the piece that flowed the best for me, which was this one...hopefully it was the right choice...

So we're finally nearing the end of this project, so here are some of the colour roughs...the top two are photographed and the bottom two are scanned, since sadly the colours don't seem to translate well...now all that remains is to decide and paint the final...

I'm also working on some sketches for the final project for this class, and I'm excited...those may be posted later...

This may be an overplayed series move, but I personally think in the context of this project and the way you've produced it, having a series of 4 with respective colours and minor render detailing applied to the major seasons would be incredible.

You'd already have Spring and Fall.

They look beautiful regardless. I especially enjoy the colours on the blue piece. The green really pops and I can imagine how it does in person... damn these scanners!

Wonderful.

IanE: Thanks for the comment, I didn't think of the spring - fall thing, but I guess that makes sense!

From the current ideation you've put up, I can tell you're going to create an awesome final :) I love the horses and the feeling of movement in your thumbs, they have a fantastic flow and rhythm to them. (you draw creatures - horses in particular - incredibly well)

Eerin: Thanks! I hope I can make it work...and yeah, I started off drawing animals as a kid, and only started attempting to draw people a few years ago, so I guess animals and creatures just come more naturally...

------------------------------------------------------------------------->

I finally finished this thing!!! It took forever, but it's done, and I can finally move on to completely focusing on my final project...
this was all done with gouache on illustration board, and measures about 8 inches across...

Quick update, still making my way through finals for now...found this old sketch yesterday, so I thought I'd scan it in, and then I fooled around with it in Photoshop for a bit...

I forgot about this thing yet again, but remembered how I actually kind of liked putting stuff up here. So here's some things!
Drawings of my own hands, and a sketch of one of the owl-folk.

Zord: Good to know I've not been completely forgotten! And owls are rather fantastic, you draw yours so well!

Zerdron: Yeah, pretty much everything I do is with traditional media, though I'm slowly starting to experiment with digital.

MyOrangeHat: Thank you!

If you haven't heard of Alphons Maria Mucha (which I'm almost sure you have) then you should look him up. He's got a gigantic body of work in art nouveau and I think you would really dig the style.
Your work is inspirational by the way, made me go d<3
keep plugging at it, your lines are friggin flawless!

CuriousJoe8:Yeah, Mucha is ridiculous, definitely became the archetypal art nouveau artist and for good reason, his pieces are gorgeous! And thanks!

The sketch and the final illustration for my interpretation of the girl from the song "Holland 1945" by Neutral Milk Hotel. I've been experimenting a lot lately with graphite and all the different tones you can get by layering it over and over again. It can be pretty cool.

great work! had a look at your blog as well :) it takes real patience to have a soft touch rendering; something that you evidentially do very well! and your pieces are very sophisticated! hope you post more often! :)

A piece I did, continuing with the idea of wind-up birds, and what might happen if they wound down. Also toying with the seeming irreversibilty of death. And further pretention. Done with graphite, and gouache for the string. The sketches were the studies I did beforehand to figure out what kind of pose I was looking for. Enjoy!

Ah Ash you've been updating this more than I thought! Now I feel like a tool for not keeping up with the MacKenzies...

As always you are incredibly brilliant. I love your work so much it is beyond words. The diptych of the wind-up birds is sublime. The way you handle your media is unbelievable, and is a skill I hope to someday possess.

smallpox: Thanks, glad to hear it!
radioblur: I was updating it more, then I fell behind again, but I'm going for it again! Always good to hear your comments, and glad you're digging my new stuff, hopefully it'll only get better from here!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------->
I fell behind on this thing again, but it was for good reason! I was accepted into both Sheridan and OCAD, and am now going to OCAD for Illustration, since they offered me advanced placement. So after all that happened everything's just been super busy trying to gather money and everything for moving. But now I've finally moved, and I'll start updating this again with new art I'm working on.
But first to play catchup!
The first piece is called The Conundrum, and was my attempt to illustrate the mental chaos and neverending loops of thought that can accompany a seemingly unsolvable problem, while just within reach amidst it all is that glorious solution if you can manage to get through all that.
Next there's some sketch studies for the following piece, which is just an idea that's been stuck in my head for awhile of a girl cloaked in wings. Not sure if I took it where I wanted it to be, I might try it again sometime.
Enjoy!
