Is anyone besides me going to be at Ringling this summer?

I am! What areas of study are you hoping to pursue? I'm hoping to do Computer Animation and Digital Illustration.

I'm torn. I imagine I'll end up sending in my workshop form as soon as possible before the April 9th semi-deadline. My interest is in Computer Animation, but I'm worried that I'll find the class too rudimentary (I've taken two semesters of CA already). Character design and illustration (digital or no) also both hold appeal, but I feel like I should take something that will give me some observational pieces for my portfolio.

I do hope we'll be doing a lot of figure drawing outside of the workshops. I could always use some more practice. PM me if you want my AIM screen name or something, I'd love to go to the program knowing someone there. :)

I'm never on AIM, but feel free to email me. I have no idea how much of our time will be spent in workshops and how much on core; would one of our resident alums weigh in?

I went last year. You guys will have a great time :) And yes you will have weekly figure drawing classes! If I remember correctly, you have core classes twice a week and figure/2d/3d/art history once a week. On fridays you have grand critique. And some days they offered optional workshops or demonstration sessions on various things like oil painting, watercolor, or digital painting, and group sketching.

I don't know if the schedule has changed much for next year but I'd guess its similar.

Precollege is great; you'll all enjoy yourselves. I attended last year and I'm excited to return as an actual student for the upcoming school year.

As caresseh mentioned, you'll take your two elective classes twice a week and everything else once a week. Be sure to attend the optional demos the TAs and/or faculty set up; they're extremely insightful. They also have weekly field trips to places around Florida (Dali Museum, Jungle Gardens, skating rink, etc) on the weekends. One weekend, everyone participates in a community service project. Last year, we painted murals for an elementary school's library.

Anyhow, for those of you attending, be prepared to work - a lot. Though the program's fun, it's very intensive and demanding (though in a good way; you'll learn a lot). Use all your open studio time wisely; hard work and effort will not go unnoticed. :)

In the Ringling 2008 hopefuls thread, Meloncov gave me a list of your elective selections. I'm jealous; I would have loved to have had the opporotunity to take digital illustration and character design.

Also makes it really hard to decide what to do. The pre-college department has been sending me pointed emails that I should declare, but I can't finalize my choices. As long as I turn the form in by April 9th, I get nearly first pick because I applied early, but I think they want to start the work of registering

I'm going. I signed up for Computer animation and digital illustration!

I think I got it since i sent in my application for the program itself back in October, and sent my course selection in the day I got the email saying it was avaliable.

Oh lord jungle gardens... haha
Yeah the "excursions" were not my favorite part of the experience, that's for sure

When you guys go on the beach trip, stay on the beach!! I went "shopping" instead and they only let us into 3 stores, two of which were ice cream places. lol

Wow I am jealous of your courses... I took acrylic painting and dry media drawing last year. I loved it though

Precollege will inspire you in ways you can't even imagine right now, my advice is to work hard especially if you are in computer animation! Gavin will probably show you some of our animations from last precollege, mine is the escape mission :-). Words of Advice: Open Studio Time=USE IT WISELY, I used my open studio time completely to work on computer animation and 2-D Design (my other projects could easily be done in the dorms after curfew.) Use your time wisely. If the TA's offer demos attend last year we received an Oil Painting demo from Jane Radstrom, Watercolors from Erin Mcguire and Digital Painting from Miguel. It was very helpful. If you have questions ask them! Critiques-be a part of it. 2nd don't get attached to your artwork. Yes you put your blood, sweat and tears into it, but don't get attached to it, changes can always be done. For Figure Drawing last year, if you have Aaron Board he allowed me to go into a second figure drawing class a week during one of my open studio periods, so therefore i received extra figure drawing sessions (if you can do it). I used my social time between 10pm-11pm and during meals on class days Mon-Thurs. I was up to 3am some nights working on projects. (I decided to make a 3 foot wire Kangaroo) On Mon-Thurs when you have open studio time when other color groups have classes there are no computer labs for you to use besides the three computers in the library (go to the IT building) There are computers for you to use including one that you can use for computer animation. Take the elevator, 2nd floor and go for it.) I'm also jealous of your choices, I was stuck with figure sculpture as my second elective.
Precollege inspired me beyond belief and made friends for a lifetime and I can't wait to be reunited with them in August.

Thanks for the advice. It's odd that they forbid laptops if there isn't always access to computers; I guess they want everyone on even footing.

Hah I don't know how I missed this thread. It just hit me that in a few days PreCollege starts.

I assume they don't allow laptops so they don't accidently get lost during the program? I don't know.

You may have. It's a rather overwhelmingly large thread, and it's easy to miss stuff.

That is very true.
I'm taking Character Design and 3-D Figure w/e it's called I forgot D:
And I'll be the uh blond, with shorthair and fading blueish streaks, that looks very antisocial.
Do you know what other classes we are going to take? Or do we find out when we get there?

I've seen the picture of you in your sb. I'll see you in character design, if we don't encounter each other sooner.

We'll also be taking the core classes, ie 2d and 3d design and drawing. Possibly art history as well; I can't remember. They'll only once a week though, while the workshops will be twice weekly.

Once I stop looking at Wall-E related news, I'll go to bed and leave for Sarasota in the morning.
