P.O.W.! Challenge 10 will be a special one-month six page minimum/16 page maximum Special Challenge Event!
Deadline: To be posted April 8, 2008, and ending May 6, 2008, 11:59 pm anywhere in the world.
Topic: To be determined by you peons
Note that the dates above have been changed--see my note in my last post...
As soon as you can, post one or more suggestions for a topic that you would like to see as the Challenge 10 Topic. If someone posts something you like, ALSO post it in your post so we can start to get a consensus. A few days before the deadline is to start, we knock heads here and come up with the actual final topic. Of course and as usual, you will be able to interpret it any way you wish, in any media. B&W or Color.
For Challenge 10, you will present your solution as a minimum of SIX to a maximum of SIXTEEN pages which adhere to standard comic specs as below...and, yes, you can have the first or last (or both) as a splash page if you want.
Standard Comic Book Size:
--Trim size: 6 5/8" x 10 1/4"
--Live art area: 6" x 9"
--Bleed size before trimming: 6 7/8" x 10 1/2" (1/8" in all directions)
This thread will be the place you ask questions on this challenge and post your suggestions (No art is to be posted in this thread). See the READ THIS FIRST thread for all specs.
I'm also posting this as an announcement in the lounge so as many people as possible get to see it.

Pick a short story by Edgar Allen Poe and illustrate it (Poe is out of copyright because it's so old.)
Poe not only wrote horror, but black comedies, mystery and adventure.

I like "He made me do it."
I like Poe something.
Suggestion:
Four 13-year-old Japanese schoolgirls highjack a NASA flight to the moon.
A civil war between Hollywood hairdressers.
One of those days when nothing goes right.
Giant bug things.
Trying to do something where everybody involved is "over-the-top" politically correct.
The world's most incompetent terrorists.
Alabama declares war on Sweden/Italy/Mongolia.
Add: Close Encounters is cool, too.

I would suggest
"Quotes of Ilaekae"
A person could write a wickedly long set of novels to rival the Harry Potter Series based on all the shit you say.

Ok as much as I love zombies here are some serious suggestions:
-"It's alive!"
-The final stand
-10, as a number/theme/symbol, whatever
-"Something's not right here"
-"that's the beauty of it!"
-The barmans tale

'Close Encounters' - can't go wrong with that!

Sure you can, watch this:
Close Encounters with 13 year old Japanese Schoolgirls.
That should perk up the FBI surveillance bots.
And please, don't turn around and make what I just typed the topic, I beg you.

Close Encounters with 13 year old Japanese Schoolgirls.
P.O.W. needs this kind of publicity.

Since these two caught my eye, let's put 'em together:
-A Poe-based story involving zombies!

The most likely one I can think of is "The Fall of the House of Usher" which could be viewed as a zombie story and is very atmospheric. It has both indoor and outdoor environmental set piece potential, characters and dialog, catacombs, and a grand finale.

Ha, I'm thinking the raven, where lenore comes back as the undead!
Whatever gets chosen, is this one going to get some advertising on other parts of the forums? Seems like it could really do with it.

How about;
'Draw!'
'His First Hunt'
or 'Is it me?'
Or, along the Poe/adaptation lines, how about 'The Student of Prague' (okay, so it's not Poe, but it's a story that's in the public domain, I do believe)...

I like the Poe idea, something like "anything with Poe is fine by me"... :P

Hmm... I like Poe, the hairdresser civil war, and "he made me do it!" "Is it me?" works too.
I suggest "the shop of superpowers" - you can go in and buy whatever superpower you want. Price: to be determined...

I kind of like all of Melonby's ideas. I particularly like the idea of involving ten. It's maybe not the most exciting title ever but 'A Decade Later...' might be interesting. I don't know, i'm just throwing it out there. Poe is a fine idea but it sounds haaaard. I added 3 A's for emphasis. Couldn't it be open to anything in the public domain? That would be broad but awesome. I might commit to this though, P.O.W. ought to get more entries.

I guarantee this many pages are going to be hard to put together no matter what the topic. But I expect what you are saying relates more to subject matter, in the sense of "make a topic people will feel comfortable to draw."
I have this suggestion: Scads of people turn out for character of the week. These boards go crazy over designing characters. Thus if the topic is character driven it may improve the turnout. I suggest a topic something like: "Your character is a futuristic bug exterminator and your story concerns her adventures. You can make a bitchin' front page of her, but if you don't give us the sequential pages you don't make the poll."
I've seen it many times in various activities here that if you make it absolutely open ended it's all over. If you make the topic "draw whatever you want as long as it's sequential" practically nobody will show. It's scary how that works. (embarrassing too, frankly)
By the way, I liked giant bugs. (Dare we use the title "Insect Battle 10"?)
/m\\w/ People are crazy for creatures too.

How about the second half of the story must take place 10 units of time (days, months, years) after the the first half of the story. The 10 whatever later would have to connected as a single story line not two separate stories.
Although i guess they could be two separate stories that share some kind of specific common theme and just differ from time.

How about this one;
'Fable'
It's short, to the point, and open to infinite possibilities and interpretations.

We're in the process of firming up a special 10th Challenge for P.O.W.! and so far, the following topics have been suggested. The final project will be between 6 and 16 standard comic pages in either black and white or color.
The Challenge was originally planned to start March 25, but due to some other changes I'm making, it will be held back until April 8 through May 6, 2008. The standard Challenge Number 9 will be posted on March 25 instead, and will run a full two weeks with no overlapping, which will continue to be the standard after Challenge 10, since many people are getting confused by the overlapping challenges. To make this clear, each regular challenge now will run a full two weeks with no overlaps, which should hopefully make things a bit easier for most of you.
This is also being posted in the 10th Challenge Lounge thread to get the info out as best we can. Those of you who haven't expressed any preferences yet, just add them to this thread, or "second" an already posted topic, and I'll get a poll up on the 25th to choose our 10th Challenge topic. To attract as many people as possible, it will be a Multiple Choice of three, so we will actually have THREE topics for the Challenge starting on April 8th.
Possible topics so far, followed by the number of additional mentions (*)...

so many choices already posted.
Poe has merrit not because I like Poe anymore (or Lovecraft for
that matter), rather it provides a point of entry and also reference.
I'd love to see a Kurt Vonnegut comic strip. That could be taken
in any number of ways.

Ok if you don't like my suggestion of "Quotes of Ilaekae" (which is pure genius) here are a couple more:
- A Wiccan Hippie goes grocery shopping.
- A curmudgeonly old man teaches idiot teenagers about art.
- Hey! Look what I found in my beard!
:ilaekae:
Instead of Poe...I'd like King...as in Steven King. Or, instead of 10...King's favorite prime number...19. Because this place is more 19 than anyplace outside of King's mind.

All of these are great. I can't believe I missed the P.O.W. until today. I really like "The Worlds most incompetant terrorists" or whatever, so I'll vote for that. But anything is good. The Zombie one would be cool too.
