Oh nice topic! Just a question - what is 2543CE? Does that just mean it's set deep in future on mars?
Cheers :D, hope there is good amount of entries like the last round.
March 10th, 2008, 10:28 PM
2543 year ...CE stands for "Common Era" Im not sure why that date is significant if it is
THANKS TSJUNI for the TOPIC
March 10th, 2008, 10:47 PM
Sweet! Martians luv Buddha. And Buddha luvs Mars. I'm in.
March 11th, 2008, 01:18 AM
Regarding 2543CE, I wanted "far" future date to allow significant technological and religious development.
Consider, "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.", a quote from Arthur C. Clarke.
Maybe, the Buddhist found a monolith on Mars? Or would a first century Christian recognize modern Christianity.
Think about the symbols, ideas, metaphors and how they may evolve in a different context.
March 11th, 2008, 11:56 AM
MMMM.....time to start a research.:lounge:
March 11th, 2008, 04:57 PM
great topic, i would love to create something for this
March 12th, 2008, 10:04 AM
This is awesome. Great idea.
March 12th, 2008, 12:42 PM
My last entry was kinda Marcy, I'm trying to learn more about Mars to get fresh idea for this one.
I watched the launch of the NASA shuttle video yesterday and it totally flipped my perception of spaceship design. I recommend searching for something like that.
March 12th, 2008, 03:58 PM
damn my eyes hurt..dont make my mistake and start in black and white.
also when painting in red values get screwed a lot.
anyway did a couple of thumbs..couldnt think of anything nice..this is from the one that sucks the least. crits welcome! :oneye:
March 12th, 2008, 07:31 PM

March 13th, 2008, 12:48 AM
Some things to consider,
March 13th, 2008, 03:59 PM
why not post it here for the time being fog?
March 14th, 2008, 04:15 AM
if i get my other work done, i'll finish this...
i spent a year in japan for grad school. in my free time, i studied woodcarving under a traditional woodcarver who carved buddhist statues and Noh masks. this brings back all kinds of memories for me. the bronze daibutsu in kamakura, the head of kannon-sama on the side of the mountain, huge 3-story tall wooden Nio statues, and another daibutsu in Nara at Todaiji.
March 14th, 2008, 12:29 PM
this is my first post ever in a forum...so well here it goes. I dont think it ll change much till the deadline, i d like to spend a little time on the IDW to hehe.
By 2500 science as merged its knowledge with those of religions to discover that religious symbolism was in fact blueprints for advancement of the human race. One of the things this new comprehension brought to light was that by use of mathematical geometry on a large scale and mass meditation could have tremendous effect on environement.
There began the quest to meditational teraforming on Mars. The meditation temple channels the energy, transforming it into a self contained atmosphere super biosphere style.
The Khor Wa temple is one of many on mars, together in a year or so the entire planet will be ready to support life.
We thank the hundreds who volonteered to meditate for this grand adventure.
Good day to you

Here is my WIP. Still a lot to do; hovering buddha statue etc.
:yayca: ccsears you've already put me to shame with just your sketch. Wah, so good la. I gotta keep practicing.
March 14th, 2008, 04:43 PM
This will be my entry :)
Looking good all the entries!
shardana , good idea dude! Thanks!
ccsears, I love your idea man! I can't wait to see your final painting!
March 14th, 2008, 08:50 PM
Verrrrry sweet stuff folks!
Welcome maks44, nice entry! I think you should crop the lower area or move the content of the pic down, the upper half is way more interesting, the lower half seems to empty.
And ccsears, apart from the cool wip, i envy you so damn much for your japan-year.....aaargh!!
I think i´ll participate here too, let´s what i can pull off the next days...
March 15th, 2008, 07:12 AM
ccsears - I always forget about Japan's relation to Buddhism, thanks for the reminder. The sketch looks great.
maks444 - welcome, I'm relatively new as well. Nice interpretation, the cropping of the top gives me a strange vibe.
fog - good for you, the Mars of 2543CE may be a sister to Earth. I'm reminded of the Buddhist temple in the movie, Serenity.
Lucky Munky - very nice, looking forward to the final.
shardana - I think the composition would be better with the top of the dome visible. When I look at yours, I wonder as to why monks would build a traditional structure when they would have to enclose it within a dome. Was there a time when the dome was not needed? Was Mars terra-formed? did it fail? <- this is the approach I decided on.
I just realized much mine reminds me of Amateria.
the umbrella man

March 17th, 2008, 03:13 AM
This is my first post:steph: , its the first sketch. I still have to ink it and paint it digitally but the concept wont be modified.
Its a buddhist temple at Cape Verde - Mars. I thought of the location because of a picture taken by a Nasa Rover i once saw.
I hope you like it
March 17th, 2008, 02:40 PM
stage 2 of my concept.
... still not sure if time will permit me to finish this...
March 17th, 2008, 02:45 PM
awesome ccsears, I love your idea man!!
Find some time do finish it please :inject:
March 17th, 2008, 03:54 PM
:lounge: Had time today to finally do some more on this ...
March 17th, 2008, 04:37 PM
This is my final entry. i'm not going to have time to tweak all the details that i want. some of the textures (like the sand) aren't showing up because i was working at triple this resolution.
anyway, no excuses.
the idea is simple, a levitating roof over a daibutsu. i felt that the only way to balance a red landscape at this saturation was to balance it with a complementary blue-green. creates a nice focus. if i had thought of a better camera angle, i probably could have included a temple gate, some calligraphy carved in stone, etc.
ChaosRocks If for some reason I forget to post this in the final burning thread, please throw this in the mix. THX.
March 17th, 2008, 04:52 PM
March 17th, 2008, 05:18 PM
ummmm. i don't know what you mean by icon in this case. like a thumbnail of the image?
March 17th, 2008, 10:12 PM
:ore: A bit more tweaking done today ...
March 18th, 2008, 04:47 PM
It's difficult to design a buddhist temple without knowing anything about Buddhism and its symbols... I took some parts of Indian, Chinese and Tibetan temples and mixed them to achieve something that could look a traditional buddhist building built with technological materials. Strangely enough, the look is vaguely FrankLloydWright-like...
shardana Painting in b&w is always useful to lay down correct values (and I often leave my works in gray tones). This time I was going to start with colours from the beginning but you made me think...
ccsears sooo good, both the concept and the sketch.
P.S. I don't know Chinese either, I hope I haven't written something stupid...
March 18th, 2008, 05:56 PM
so... can anyone tell me the correct way to submit my entry? it looks like at the end of the deadline (today/tomorrow 3/19) the forum admin (ChaosRocks) creates a EOW82 Final Burning thread. There, we post the finished picture (and also a thumbnail for a voting poll icon?)
sorry if this is in a sticky somewhere...i haven't been able to figure out how it all works.
March 18th, 2008, 06:20 PM
Correct (and remember to mark your image as final and to post the thumbnail together with the image).
March 18th, 2008, 07:47 PM
Here´s my FINAL entry...!
"The great Temples of ancient gods will descent divine water from the skies and bring life to this dead planet."
(I´m aware that there´s no planet close to mars.... but who nows what will happen the next 500 years....?)
March 18th, 2008, 08:16 PM
ChaosRocks Sorry about not understanding that, i went back and included two small thumbnail icons. Thanks again.
March 18th, 2008, 09:45 PM
Vyse Yes your right to much of nothing at the bottom
tsujny I hope the vibes are better now
ccsear great stuff dude simple but efficent, I would have liked to see Budha see the horizon in front of him tought but nice composition anyhow
I ended up tweaking for another hour and a half so i pretty much changed everything, the idea stays the same.
good day to all
March 19th, 2008, 05:27 AM
My idea was to have an attempted and failed terraform of Mars. Hence, the blue sky over desert Mars. The temple was centered on ,"to become as a stone that enters the water causing no ripple." I don't remember the source to this expression, so, if you know please.
March 19th, 2008, 05:36 AM
my final..this took me ages..could use lots of little tweaks but..time is up!
March 19th, 2008, 09:20 AM
Okay... I'm tired and dead... I'll try fix it up tomorrow, if not it's my final.
March 19th, 2008, 09:40 AM

Where's Ev's Gone? I know I wassnt imagining it!
yeah and it was a very cool entry too!
March 19th, 2008, 07:06 PM
carguin the easy way for strait lines is to turn of the brushs shape dynamics (or use a square brush since they dont have shape dynamics) then hold shift and click at the first point of you line then the last,...it also works with the shape dynamics on but your line will fade out
Love your entry by the way
March 19th, 2008, 09:49 PM
/ev deleted it. I don't know why. it was very cool... I wish he/she hadn't.
