What the is going on there? Reminds me of the "the scream" (Edvard Munch) in a cocoon for some reason. :) I think the liney brush strokes on the fingers make the skin seem pulled and distorted. Maybe tone them down or eliminate them entirely. I think if you drop the value in the shadows, you'll get a much more interesting depth effect, I think.

I'm looking at the pic again, and the lighting is weird. I think if you decide on one lightsource, and work in some sharp shadowlines and deep shadows, it will help immensely. Great start!
