Questions about Canvas

I used to paint a lot about 7 years ago when I was in college but kinda got out of it because of my some bad remarks by my art teacher at that time. But now I'm considering getting back into it the only thing is I kinda forgot his instructions on building on a canvas. I seem to remember he told us we don't necessary have to use the stretcher boards but we can use plywood and also we can use normal white house paint for the prep work on the cloth. Also he mentioned that the cloth doesn't have to be canvas cloth it can be something else I can't remember what kind of cloth he was talking about so I was wondering if anyone knew.
