what do you think?should i put something into the background?
thanx in advance:)
p.s.:coloured in photoshop 7.i'd use painter if i hadn't to practise for my final exam with this program.

Hello! Cool dude you've got there! Here are some suggestions on improving him: The lineart look scratchy in some parts, go around it and make it smooth, it'll make a great difference! Also, I think you should add more colors to him, I mean it has too much red in it (except for the face). For example, try to apply some subtle greenish shadows to him (green is the complimentary color of yellow). It should make an improvement.
O, and of course, do add a background, and that's a must! ^_^ Sorry I have no ideas right now, but maybe I'll come back with some idea for the background. Just use your imagination!

Yeah clean the lines, add a spaceship background and put some other colours into him to stear away from monochrome if you are going to put a background into it.

just a small update on the colours.it isn't any more like that what i dreamt, but what the hell, it wasn't that from the beginning.and after all, this does look better, doesn't it?
p.s.:very useful for recolouring in photoshop:just set the brush function to "hue".every colour will automatically change as if painted with this colour, also darks and highlights.(not white)

i think what they were trying to say with the green, was add it to his skin, in the darker shaded regions, blend it in to make the creature look more biological, more realistic than solid red, though the pad things are still an imrovement, and for godsakes draw any kind of background, even a happy face you need some sort of distraction right now, the creature can't exactly stand out on his own just yet

not much to say except that green is not the complementary color of yellow... green is the complement of red, yellow of purple, and orange of blue. that's all...

Hmmmm.....well, you are trying to make it look like he's under water right? Then you'll need to blend, by smuding or sumtin', the backround a little more and fade it a little(darker) and add some green moss or something an plants and make the enviroment look a bit greener(plankton).
And for the guy, make some markings around his arm or legs or sumtin' or on his chest to add more subtlety...
But the concept looks inspiring:thumbsup: (underwater creature..hmmm..nice new dsg-topic)

glad i'm an inspiration, but uh-oh that's not supposed to be something underwater...it *should* be something like a mountainous landscape on a (maybe cold) planet.thanx for the input...this means i'll have to change something.
...although underwater,hmm...

It's not sharp enough to be mountains IMHO. And do you use wacom pen or just a mouse?
Maybe by changing the color of the sky will help...and what I said adding some flora will make your backround always a bit more subtle, like tundra or sumtin'.

I like the first one the best. The last step is too much sharp for me.

you mean the one where everything is just in red?with highlights and stuff or without?thanx for the input. studied enviroments the last days so i'm able to say what is wrong.
also i figured for this piece it will most probably be better with a non-environmental background, maybe just some pattern.

That's the part of concept art you can't get with a tutorial, character development.
It's your creation, you gotta figure out what bred with what to make this. What does it eat, breathe, drink. What is the homeworld like? How many suns? How 'civilized'? Mud Huts or Wasp nests? Vines? Trees?
