Hey, I have been seriously looking into Kendall college of art and design in Grand Rapids Michigan. I think I want to go into concept art, story board, or anything like that. Its got a great location, an amazing building, and good staff. Just wondering if anybody has gone there, what you thought, and if you have any advice for me, please share! Thanks.

Check out the year end show of graduate work. Speak to current students and grads. Short list at least 3 programs, check them all out, make comparisons. Ask what percentage of graduates find employment in the industries they were trained for.

One of my co-workers went there, he liked it well enough. I think it's funny because they gave me 16k in scholarship without even applying first! The way they set up their program is a bit odd to me, and it's in a small area, but I hear it's a beautiful place. That's about all I know. When I went to a National Portfolio Day, they had, literally, the ONLY competent reps for their school. They were the only school where I thought "man, these folks really DO care about me and my work and what I want, not what they want me to be" They were nice, energetic (everyone else was half asleep), talkative, and focused. If I had to judge all the schools that were there, even among Art Center, Ringling, Laguna- and 40 other schools, based only on the quality of their representatives, Kendall won HANDS DOWN.

I didn't apply there myself but I've heard it is a really nice area and that their art education program is really good so if you want to go into teaching that might be something to think about. I also agree about the reps at national portfolio day they really wanted to talk about my art and were very energetic and nice.

Isnt that weird? At portfolio day they were also the ONLY ONES TO HAVE CHAIRS! I agree with you 100% on that. What really inpressed me though was they were one of two schools in michigan to have an extencive digital media program.

But, as its three hours away, speaking to students and teachers anywhere but, well, right here, would be difficult.

I am currently enrolled as a freshman at KCAD and really enjoy going there. There are some great professors that teach there.

Oh, good, a connection. I just filled out all the paperwork for that school. Tell me about it! Im looking into the digital media section, I heard its really good. Any advice for an incoming freshmen? Hows the work load?

It depends on who you ask on the work load some say it is a lot, I don't think this so. Unless you procrastinate then things get really tough.

What would that work consist of, art projects, or busy work? I can handle art projects with zeal, book work is another topic, though.

Your studio classes will mainly consist of art projects a lot of in class work and out of class work. For the gen ed. stuff its not that much of a burden. You'll basically be slaving over an art project over a book.

All right. Well it should be a very interesting experience. Thanks for the info.

Late response, but I'm a junior there now. I honestly would not recommend this school to anyone who doesn't get a lot of scholarships or doesn't want to go into art education. It's not challenging and the professors really don't know what they're talking about, too old fashioned. Don't get me wrong, they can teach you the basics, but they aren't up to date.

I also went to CCAD and CCAD made KCAD look like a joke work load wise, and difficulty wise, and critique wise.

What do you mean by "too old fashioned"?

Razuel,

No offense meant here but your comments make me question you on a few things

---if KCAD is so bad there, why are you still there?

---And if CCAD is so great, why didn't you stay there?
