The woman with the sword is very nice, especially being from imagination! The cloth on her looks great also. The only thing that I see to critique is that, considering the angle of the sword, it seems that more fingers should be shown on the hand holding the sword. Other than that, beautiful work :)

really amazing work--only thing I'd take issue with is that holding a sai like that is a good way to get your fingers cut off

Not bad stuff. Some of your designs have some very nice patterns, but in order to fully express yourself in your drawings you need to get strong basic skills. Get good books on perspective and anatomy and do a lot of drawings from observation. Check the Andrew Loomis books if you have not already. All the basic stuff you need are in his books. Keep drawing!

Zdravei Maistore!
I love this concept: http://conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=327536&stc=1&d=1205859385
If you don't mind me trying to do a paintover of it please drop me a note, that's is really a great concept.
In general you need to work a bit more on capturing the shapes of the humans better. Study photos or even better if you can get into a life drawing class. It all gets better with practice, don't give up!

Something i noticed in your pencil drawings, get away from smudge shading. Its more difficult at first, but shading with just the point of your pencil gives you alot more control and will help you develop your technique much faster, among other things.

Hi! I draw a monster called Grinder inspirated by the works of Aleksi Briclot (hell of a artist) ! It took me a little more than 3 hours! I have some more works but they are on paper in the desk, soon Ill have a personal copyer and Ill update my scetchbook daily! I hope you like it! (sorry for the english, critiques are welcome) AGH, one question, how can I add thumbnail to my scetchbook, please tell me?

April 6th, 2008, 04:02 PM
the robot: try and make its material a bit more specified - if its shiny metal i think it should have some more highlights and so. that would also help getting the pic more interesting.
last one looks good, liking the contrast that blue does to the black bg and his red body. a little concerned about his jaw that seems a bit too long. my best tip is to imagine the joints and how it all would fit together if it was being closed and opened.
anyways, really good work with the details in most of your posts, and wooow, liking those hand and eye studies! You have pretty cool ideas and a nice sketchbook, so: keep it up!
ps, march 10th is my fav i think, its really cool!

Hey, thanks for the kind words in my SB. You're showing lots of improvement since you started your book. The most recent portrait from April 8th is quite a lot better than your portraits from March 18th, for instance. You're also obviously quite prolific. There's a lot of stuff cropping up here, so you're more enthusiastic with your scanner than I am with mine. ;)
So, what do you need? Your figures etc are quite elongated, which could be the beginning of a 'style' if you keep pushing it. You'll need to heed several things I get told every so often - your figures need more volume, more roundness in order to seem more 3d. Your tones are good but need to be pushed further. This one (http://conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=343262&stc=1&d=1207753876) is heading in the right direction.
Your figure drawing is good, but needs to be practised. Also, I assume you're working from photos - I know that's convenient, but you can't beat from practise from life to improve. And you need to copy a few Master drawings. Just google search, or buy some of those cheapy "Dover Art Library" collections of stuff by various masters. They're neat.
I'll keep an eye your direction. You keep an eye on me. ;) Oh, and do the CHOW's and the POW's and so on. They're great.

Hi and thanks for the comment! I am going to hold up to your advices for the volume of the figures and more realistic shadows! But you know I havent got such experience (for 14 year old) as the big artist that you give me for examples in your private message to me! I like pretty much H.R. Giger his works are fantastic! The one and the only thing I need is free time (GOD DAMN)! But on first place is drawing! For the elongated figures I dont know, just a remainder of a old animations that I have been watching from a small child! My mentor is Aleksi I like his works more than anybody! In every picture I go through so many ideas in my head and then I catch a pencil and start to draw! I really give the most of myslelf in each character I make! I really want to lengthen my advance in art and do some serious projects in future! So thanks very much for the support you gave me! And here is some quick body drawings!

Hey, and thanks for dropping by my sketchbook!
Great stuff here! I don't really know what to say, cause donalfall pretty much said everything ;) I wish I started anatomy study when I was 14.. ( your latest picture ).
My only tip would be, keep drawing! don't stop.. if you see something cool that you really feel like "Oh I wish I could draw like that", then try. Copy it, and learn a thing or two by doing it :) just dont forget to give the original credit, if you upload it somewhere hehe.

Thanks for visiting my SB. You're improving quite a bit, and you're still scanning enthusiastically. :) I'll try and give some help....
The woman who is holding a fan a few posts back looks really good. Her back and butt look well studied, but the face just needs to be improved out to the same quality. The guy with the gun beside her looks a bit lumpen, and his arms and hands are a little oversized, but its heading in the right direction too. Examine some pictures of real hardware - guns and helmets - and see how they look. The anatomy studies are looking well, but you have to keep pushing them for improvement if you want realism. You tend to make the heads too small for the rest of them. :)
The winged girl is showing how much you're improving. :) Again, her back, butt and arms are well realised.... but..... if a human had wings, would they look like those? Your wings here kind of stick out from under her armpit, more like gliders than a flier - a flying bird depends on flexing the wing at different points to fly.
Wing structure. (http://www.ehow.com/images/GlobalPhoto/Articles/2110938/WingStepTworobertsloan2_Full.jpg)
I always imagine winged humans as having either a seperate limb coming from their back that is a wing, or else having them attached to the arm the whole way down. I guess what I'm saying is ref some wings and decide how it would work if you want the concept to carry through the picture.
You should try a few pics where you keep the outlines light - almost invisible - and let your shading work as the content. Just give your outline work a lighter touch.
It's all good though man, your book is looking really well. Cheers!

Hey man and thanks for the kind words! Your advice is very important for me, I see that you want to help me, thanks I really appreciate it! This weekend I'll sit and work seriously on what you told me, my biggest problem is solving the problem with the skyline of my figures! So here are some new stuff that are experiments of learning how to draw more specific lines, I really like the dark colors and the B&W art, so Im heading to that direction! One of them is painted with oil paint!

These are part of my body studies, I was determined to start with Bames book of anatomy, I think this book is very usefull and many amateur-artists like me should start with it! I did not manage to copy each picture and post here, I tryed to remember each muscle, where it's placed and how it projects, maybe there are plenty of mistakes but I'm a begginer! A almost forgot I changed the angel's wings! I think that way they look more realistic thank for the donalfall advice!

Nice work here. Your ideas are fun to look at and I'm glad I took the time to see see the vast progression from your first post to the current post. Although, I couldn't shake the feeling that your drawings were still a bit 2D and ridgid. I've noticed that you had started giving them a bit more depth around post #48 and onwards.
As far as rendering goes, a prime example of where you could give your pictures a bit more depth woud be in post #38, if you focussed on applying darker areas to the places that need it most (for instance, find where the light source is and make darker the parts that are in shadow) then they would have more of an impact on the viewer by giving more depth. As others have said, 'draw from life' more to get accuracy in your figures.
The clown is quality by the way, seeing pictures like that shows that you're starting to be more fluid with your work.
Good luck dude. Carry on drawing!

Hey dude. "Death Rebel" "necrofear" and "Skull" are all looking pretty well. "The Avenger" is still all messed up. I was trying to do a paintover for you but I can't get Photoshop to run on my Pc at the moment. :( It's old, like me. ;)
His head is a little far to the right on his shoulders, and his left arm is dropped a little too low. His legs are out of proportion and look really odd swung to the side like that. If his mask/bandanna thing is to stay on his face, it needs to be pulled tight - so it should follow the same contour of the face on both sides. Small problems, but there's a few of them.
It's weird, tho, cos there's problems with the other guys as well - straight off, "Death Rebel" has really small feet - but on the others they look like style choices, but on the Avenger they just look wrong. Give the character a whole new attempt, I'ld say. It's all good though. I'll be in touch more, I have to buy a new computer first.

I've been reading recently a book called Diablo #3: The Moon Of The Spider from R.A.Knaak (the book is very interesting and the experience during the reading was just amazing) , anyway I've decided to draw a concept of a character from that book. He is a necromancer called Karidbus! Hope you like the other "Spawn" concept! Feedbacks are welcomed!

Hey man great stuff. I like your latest characters. I have to agree with Donalfall, The Avenger looks a bit weird. You're much more skilled than I am so take my critique with a grain of salt.
I think that like Donalfall said his left arm is a bit too low, and his legs are a bit out of proportion. I think what makes it look the most odd to me in the pose. It seems a bit unnatural but not a cool contorted/undead way. It doesn't seem like a practical pose to take, especially an aggressive one.
That is just what I think, I'm still learning and more or less beginning so I could be wrong. But overall those characters and your SB are looking really nice.

good work, looking really good. Dont know if you are a fan of James hawkins, but you should checkout http://www.hawkprey.com I think you would really like it. He is a concept artist and can draw like hell, he can do monsters, robots, guns, girls, buildings,vehicles...anything. I think what Im trying to point out is that becoming a great concept artist starts with the foundations, learn the anatomy, and the lighting, and that makes your monsters and concepts that much better. Also another thing you might want to checkout is http://www.posemaniacs.com/pose/thirtysecond.html just doing some quick thumbnail sketches of the human body really helps loosen up the drawing hand, and also helps with learning the human body. You go through a bunch of paper, but it's quite helpful, well it has helped me out a bunch. Your drawings are looking great, keep up the hard work and it will really payoff.

very nice anatomy, some neat concept (i like this one http://conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=400887&stc=1&d=1214658378 most)
you sometimes get lost when it comes to legs and your faces are all the same. i'd suggest studying different faces and expressions from reference. try drawing someone with less protruding cheekbones, with big nose, with fat chin, with baggy eyes. it's lots of fun and will make your art much more interesting

Heya.
Nice collection. You can really see the improvements from the first post to this latest one.
The overall thing I've noticed, however, is the perspective with respect to anatomical proportions. They're still off; would suggest perspective guidelines / boxes to help with that.

localfatheaded- thanks for the useful comment, but from my first visit here I'm very interested in each of the artist among the best... HawkPrey is hell of an artist, his designs are really great but he's not my style! The thing is, I'm not so interested in mech things and robots and space ships flying in some freaky enviro, I want to develop my skills to the maximum by learning the human anatomy every day, every muscle position in certain pose and that's make me happy, drawing the human body! So that way when I finish a drawing it makes me rewarded, every god damn picture I draw I give the most of myself and every time I learn more... thats the catch, not to stop thinking about this, about your work! Otherwise thanks for the useful comment!
Dannelf- thanks for the kind words, but it's fast done work! The thing is I don't like shitty tablets and using photoshop and other kinds of mech! And the other thing is that I'm not really ready for such thing like tablets, I'm training my skills now and learning! I want to obverse the basics and the most important things of Illustration and character designs and so...
SanXavier - thanks too man, you SB is cool too!
malpanka - the anatomy yeah, thanks! But the faces, I think this is one of my first try to develop my skills drawing the same face, it's important too but in future I'll try to obverse your tip! Thanks :)
r2d2 - Pro.?!?!?! It's a long way man, I'm only 15 now and in this craft I'm an ant for the masters like M.Djurdjevic, A.Briclot, NoxIZMad... (my favourites)...
Snitchcat- thanks for the advice, now I'm using paper with some cubes or something like that, shitty work now but I want to mamorize and train my abilities by doing works on that kind of paper...

I'd like to see some variation in the composition. Most of your pictures show the chracter from front, and there's nothing wrong with that at all. But to add some variation, try some different perspectives from below and above etc. or add movement to them!

You have improved a lot through out your sketchbook. I really like the super heros from your last post, they all look good. Keep up with the anatomy sketchs. Some great concepts here, mate. DECYPL is right though, you have to keep working on your anatomy. It's terrible for you that almost everything will be just right and then a head or arm or something will be a little too big and just throw things off.
Loving the details and the equipment, as well as all the weaponry and armour, the poses etc. They really seem intense and nutty looking. They remind me of John Blanche or Ian Miller or some of those other old school Games Workshop style concepts. Spiky... ;) Keep on working.

Cheers mates!
First I wanna thank to all of you! Encouraging comments! But I'm not as good as you are writing... there are many more major issues with the human anatomy and the poses... In these I'm showing some more rendering skills (despite of the image quality) than anatomy and structure... Recently I'm not very productive... some sketches and scrawls in the brake times in school... I am looking for some inspiration... something like endless source of fancy stuff, things like that, many of the artists here gather inspiration from other CA members, which is good but on the other hand this react much more than they think ... searching for my own style and inspiration awe from artists here is now my main objective! I'll try to get myself on track this weekend... Again cheers chaps!

Hey man. I like a lot of your ideas. Some of those guys look pretty cool with that sort of human/mechanical look a lot of them have.
I've noticed one thing that stands out that bothers me. I think in your last piece (the native american guy) as well as some others, he looks awkward and a bit off, and I believe its because of his pose. First off his left arm (the one on our right) looks like it's in a very unnatural position. Put your fist on your hip, and then move your elbow out as much foward as you can. You can feel your shoulder strech, and that's what it looks like hes doing to me. Second, his legs seem to be in an odd sort of lunging motion, which could work somehow I suppose, but again it looks unnatural to me.
I suggest you think about your characters pose more. Why would they pose this way? Are the attacking? Relaxed? Running forward? etc. I don't think most humans would naturally take odd poses like that. Some of your poses do look cool, and I believe it's because they're more realistic. (post 106 has some good ones, and the 4th one down in post 101 for example). Even though the guy in 101 has an odd pose, it still looks natural, like hes tensing from pain, or something of that sort. I think unnatural poses can look cool in a twisted/contorted sort of way, but those that I spoke of don't seem to have that intention. (Edit: the 5th drawing in post 101 has the same elbow thing, and I noticed one other drawing where they had their elbow out and their forearm pointing down, gives the same off effect to me.)
Anyway, sorry for the long post. I should probably go practice myself now.

October 19th, 2008, 06:58 PM
I like your attention to detail and your ideas, but, seriously kid, you need to draw from LIFE. Your drawings would improve if you not only studied anatomy, like I'm noticing with the muscle study, which is a good start, but you need to start drawing people everywhere you go. Draw people from magazines, draw people on public transportation, draw people sitting, studying, reading, watching, etc. Just remember when it comes to anatomy, you don't have to remember EVERY single part, because no one is going to hire you if you remember the Cervical Vertebrae or the Humerus. But you have to know the way it looks, the way it bends on the body.
And I agree with n1va. That grid paper is NOT drawing paper. You might be using it for alignment but you should be using a real sketchbook. Something like Moleskin or Strathmore.

You're damn right guys damn right... and im wrong in many attitudes! Really my biggest problem is that I hate drawing from reference... I try to memorize the positions in my mind but it looks like it's not working... got to keep pushing those poses... and the paper... waa it's very uncomfortable... must try some other kind of paper! And practice more on anatomy... I'm presuming on the character designs more than anatomy... big mistake... maybe this is one of the last posts here of mine... I want to practice more... I need to do this... uploading images here and commenting in SB is taking so much time... instead of using this to improve... I want to thank you guys, for all of your counsels and wish you luck and keep going... there's always have to be hard work to improve not only in drawing, but in everything and of course desire!

The last one is really good, esp the rendering. Anatomy issues are with the right elbow and the visible foot. Also the right shoulder/bicep tie-in area is not looking right. However, it's probably your best drawing in this book so far. Keep improving and if you can try to draw from life/references more.

Good looking work in here. I'd recommend trying some gestures too, posemaniacs is good for that, to loosen up your lines and streamline your process. The problem I'm seeing is that a lot of your well thought out, really nice costume detailing is getting lost in very heavy, occasionally misplaced lines. There are so many dark areas in your pencil drawings that the focus is lost. This (http://conceptart.org/forums/showpost.php?p=2056780&postcount=119) character is the most successful because you limited the values according to materials and textures.
well, at least that's my terribly unprofessional opinion ^_^;

The lines are too heavy you are right abot the lost of many details and the whole feeling of the character... bacause the character concept is not about how brutal your character looks and how much effects you had used in photoshop after the scan... it is about how you are going to show his\her personality the aim they are heading for! Love those hand studies man, interesting for you to use the arows to show motion. It is amazing to see how much improvement youve shown in such a short amount of time. I especailly like your charachter designs and mechanical stuff, the only thing is I ould love to see some of that stuff painted! Also, aome more anatomy studies could never hurt, although your figures have shown much improvement. Stop by my sketchbook sometime.

Brato, s vseki post napredva6, davai vse taka!
Want to point your attention to THIS ONE (http://conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=573593&stc=1&d=1232824180). I think you can fix the entire piece by moving the neckline back and up towards his ear a bit. Right now he just doesn't look right. Also the forehead to nose outline can perhaps be improved but as it is I'm not sure it's wrong.
I don't know if you're flipping your work yet. All of it is pencils, so after you scan it import it into Photoshop or GIMP (whatever program you use) and flip horizontal. It's very easy to see your mistakes this way.
Another thing which helps is to carry a mirror and to look at your work through the mirror. Also flipping the page and looking at it from behind against a bright light source works the same.
Otherwise outstanding! I especially like the studies in #161 which is your last post. That's better than I've ever done! Keep pushing!

n1va - Hello there mate! I want to thank you for your helping tips for the trick: flipping the paper or after scanning to flip it horizontally, and to see from the back the paper when it's pointed to a light... i don't know how it's working but at first glance you are suprised... at first when I found about it that looked to me very strange, out of proportion and stiff (the drawing)! Anyway I am always looking at your SB.

One more! I mixed some styles from the late middle-ages and the crusader times... and the box with the radiation sign on his belt gives a hint that he lives in apocaliptic times! Pretty much mixed up but I love to put some extra things like pockets, armour plates, guns put in his belt and ammonition pockets.
Now to tell something for me... sorry for the lack of updates recently... I am very busy with studying, i started playing drums and there isn't pretty much time for everything! I am waiting the summer with a great expectance! Thanks for the encouragement again guys, waiting comments from you :) - g

Very nice stuff! It upsets me how much you've improved in less than a year and you're only 15. May I ask what references you used for the poses on page 5 (the ones with you drawing their arms and legs in different positions) They look really nice, especially the lines.
As a critique, one thing that stood out to me was the placement of your women's lips in 3/4 view. They could look better in my opinion.
Other than more anatomy studies and gestural practice, I think youre stuff is solid and you have a bright future in art. You make me feel so old!
BTW, what books have you used?

Hello again!
Princess Of Magnus
I want to present you one of my first pencil drawings with an environment! It took me a couple of days because the format is not standart A4, no it is bigger than that. It wasn't so difficult actually to scan it :)... and uhh no reference used... I am not too shure for the horse
The actual idea came from one of my friends. She has a great tallent for writing and after she gave me one of her stories (sorry I do not remember the name) I read it immediately and the knight who slightly looks like Naz-Gull attracted my attention. He is chasing the defenceless princess through a series of obstacles in the forest, she finally falls down while the rider stops his horse (which hasn't got any skin) and rise his sword in the air, then she puts her arm above her head and prays for mercy.
Actually after I read this I felt like "... I am gonna draw this... and it will be cool..." And this is the result, hope you will give me some crits\helping tips... for a moment I felt like I am never gonna finish this peace :wtf:
To be honest i made some adjustments and changes on that peace.
Soon I will post more  TAKE CARE ARTISTS!

Rushlord - haha thank you man! Now I am 16 :) my birthday is on 8-th of April. I've achieved this result only with eye observation. I do not use books but soon I must redraw many books and I will do it. The books in my list are these - Burne Hogarth (all of them), Bames (human, animal anatomy), Malestrom, Victor Perard, George Brigman, Andrew Loomis, Glen Fabry and maybe if Marko Djurdjevic writes a book about drawing - hhh I WILL BE LIKE :anime: :wtf: :wtf: :wtf: :wtf:

Hello CA! I've decided to do something like a series of drawings of few Marvel heroes which maybe all of you like. These are the so called symbiotes. Super villains like Venom, Carnage, Antivenom, Toxin, Riot, Scream and many others.
And lets raise the question. Which is better for an artist - to follow the path of eye observation or just to redraw all the available books or draw from life. Shh I prefer the fourth - draw from everywhere but stay original. :)
Hope you will like these. Crits are always welcomed :) Thank you for watching dear guest!

Your line quality, your rendering, how you shade, knowledge of anatomy... All that improved. You still need to take care with your proportions, as distortion that doesn't seem at all intended still shows. Double check before you move on to detail. If you're not getting life classes yet, do that. Study perspective too.
You always had had an excellent imagination from the start. I like all the intricate details and costumes you come up with for your characters. They are very scary, yet one can't stop looking. If you never stop, you are going to kick some serious ass in ten years.

Rushlord - haha thank you for the compliments. Take care my friend :yayca: I am very curious, are you going to participate in the Newborn competition? It would be nice to exchange some ideas :) Looking forward to see a reply from you.
Here is another graphic. I wanted to touch upon some religious theme this time. I chose to draw the crucifix of the Messiah. Before long time I've been inspired by the film called The Passion Of The Christ by Mel Gibson. The film had a very big impression on me and I decided to contest in Newborn with something like this. But after I drew the picture I relized that something reliligous won't be the best variant. Maybe people want something which do not divide society into groups or something with background. And I gave up this idea. But I have many other ideas that I may use for the contest.
To get the thing into end thank you for looking and crits are always welcome (now more than before). Take care my bothers in pencil :)

Peetaer - Thank you for visiting my SB! Marko has a great influence on me, but I try to stare as much as I can from his mood of drawings and style. All this is an eye observation and imagination. It is impossible for me now to draw from Burne Hogarth because I do not have much time to sit on computer. I am studying the anatomy only from my eyes. Long time ago I did a few drawings from Burne Hogarth which is an excellent choice when it comes to studying.
Thank you again. Take care - G
Now here is another piece. Maybe more than 3 hours or so. I've been watching it more than drawing it :D. No reference used.

Ou man. Stop this. Lets think real. Look the others, yes I agree with you I've improved a lot in someones eyes but in others a little. It depends. It is so relatively. The philosophy of this is just the time. You need time to develop.

Really good work here. Excellent rendering, good anatomy, lots of character on your work...
I'd suggest working on the poses, some of them look a bit awkward,as if they had been made up while drawing, and not before starting to draw. Anyway, that's a bunch of really nice work! Keep it up!

First I want to give you a cordial thanks! :asskisser:
LtPlissken - My army is getting bigger :p ! Haha anyway thank you for the comment.
Abrodos - Thank you for commentin gin my SB for first time. Your feedback is very useful I must imagine the pose in my mind first or do a little thumbnails playing with different poses. I am not so good at foreshortening at the moment so my poses may seem sometimes a bit off and alike. However thank you for the crit :) Take care
Rushlord - haha I've understood. Take care my friend :)
