Hi. just thought I'll see what people thought of these. They're a couple digital paintings that was for a cover and an inside illustration for an internal document.

The orginals are much larger images coming out at about 24MB at 300ppi - way too big to post here, so Ive included some detail pictures. I didnt have as much time on the first one as I would liked. I think it would be better if you could see what they were shooting at! it would had of improved the composistion, but as it was internal it was ok for the deadline. They are for the spacehulk series of games.

Nice work!!!

The only critique i have is in the first pic it seems as though they are shooting at the walls. I dont really get the feeling that they are being attacked.

The city shot is plain awesome! great detail.

Good painting overall, the lighting seems to me a bit inconsistent but that´s maybe just me. The lighting seems to me as if the marines are carrying flaming torches and not just Bolter - this means I think the light from the gunfire seem to me too strong. Furthermore to me the pose of the marine in the left front doesn´t read really well. I first thought he was standind on stumps.

I personally would have liked a "grittier" and darker feeling to the Space-Hulk theme - but I was playing the game in the beginning of the 90´s - Maybe GW has changed the overall direction ;). Otherwise really good work, even if I´m not very fond of GW-art anymore.

I´ve looked on your website, you´ve a good variation in styles, I would like to see more of you!

Many GW artists have a tendency to make pics where everyone is firing every weapon they've got in almost every direction...
If you are doing material for the official stuff...please change that approach. Make a clear enemy, or at least a clear direction where the characters aim their fire at.

I like the Imperial guard march. looks good.
You have got some real nice architecture going here. Just make those marines shoot at the incoming enemies (genestealers I guess ).

HOly machrel! These are some kick ass sketches! I can't believe all of these things are digital! What program did you use, and how long did it take you to do it? These things are really, really good.

Hi everyone. thanks for the comments.

zeroe - about a week. these are my first digital painting like this - usually it's traditional media, so I would expect I would get faster.

I take time to reflect on my work rather than speed through it all for the hell of it. I usually spend much more time on observation and 'reading' the image, with perspective playing a major part and then balancing it up with the deadline.I'm a sucker for detail - I feel everything is as important as everything else - a habit from my comic strip work.

softdrawer - thank you very much. the time can get tedious, but then it gets exciting and I get wrapped up in it.

said7 - yep! It actually started out as a closer cropped image where you didn't see the walls, and time was running out. so this was the fastest answer at the time. now I would do stuff differently. Thanks.

Fipse - thank you. You have a good point about flaming torches! ha ha! - I wanted a 'last stand' kind of feel. the lighting in the background was pretty distant as they are meant to be inside a spacehulk. they are also in a confided space in contrast almost like a creepy corner of the ship so the intent was to make it feel a bit dark, with the contrast there. plus laying with hots and colds too to add depth.

I used to play GW stuff too, and like you, not that fond of it now. I would really love to re-design their bulky suit - it looks like they wear flares! - the job landed on my lap and to be honest I kinda under pressure to get it done, so I went with the flow.

the brief was to make it look huge inside even if it was a spaceship - I would probably redo a lot of stuff.

the other bug I have is that there are shell casings on the floor, but you don't see any flying out, again - time ran out so I have to wrap it up.

Payback - thank you, you're very kind. I hoped it would give that impression, but I worked on it so much, I lost that first impression. Often I wish I could see my work through someone elses eyes - but hey! that's why I've put them up here :)

gallon - yeah you're right I agree. As I said it was meant to be a bit of 'last stand' - LOL but a stand against what? I hear you say. I was told to keep the GW identity as we were trying to land a deal. I've always wanted to put the genestealers in to make it much more threatening - and I feel that its not very strong image without them. I'm also a bit bored of the symmetry of the work. I dont think the pipes and wires were enough to offset it - I might try and dig out the orginal composition.

on the second image I added a bit of my own stuff, but tried to be true to GW. its meant to be an illustration for when the space hulk has crashed into a city and the Imperial guard are coming to rescue.

better planning next time! :)

Psychostorm - Thank you. This is more a finished work piece than a sketch for me. It took about week for each picture. as the first was a cover - it took so long because the size is actually 2479x3433pixels and when I zoom into 100%
I personally still like to see detail.

I used Photoshop7 - wacom tablet. I know a guy who does fantastic work with a mouse but I just can't do that. some of the stuff I would draw on paper and scan it in. and paint over. I use my skills to help me do my work. as I know 3D studio Max. I also use 3D max to understand perspective on buildings- which I would build something and see how it gets effected by light etc. I feel observation is a very important part of being an artist. I think it was Boris Vallejo who said you should more observation than art...I still need to do a hell of a lot more lookin' :)

BluePencilArtist Thank you very much.

thanks again, everyone. I'll keep stuff in mind for my next work, whatever that may be.

best wishes
Jez.

This is maybe a bit naggy...

but It feels kind of strange that all the marines on the right side are lefthanded and the marines on the left side are righthanded.

and the left leg on the marine on left side feels a bit strange.
but these are just tiny details, so it isn't much to worry about.

Otherwise these are really good, specially the second one

great work :chug:
