This thread is for all of us who have applied to the Illustartion program starting this fall '08! The hopefully waiting anxious artists! :\

We can all just get to know eachother and let eachother know if we're in.. or not! dun dun dun! And start sharing art, ideas, critiques, support, bounce ideas off eachother ETC. Pretty much whatever we want!

I went on Saturday to the Portfolio Assessment, and killed myself with nerves. I saw a couple people scrambling, photocopying and STILL DRAWING EEEEK.
I hope it went well for everyone!
Maybe see you in the coming year? Thats so wierd! Ahh

Hi sabrinasmelko :)

I posted on the other thread yesterday, but that thread is getting too long, glad you started a new thread.

I also went on Saturday for the portfolio submission for the Illustration program. There was a long lineup when i arrived at around 9:45ish.

Which option did you do for the portfolio?

Long wait until March 31st! lol

Ken.

sabrinasmelko
March 4th, 2008, 01:44 PM
yeah eh!
Its wierd that I was there at the same time as you, in th same line.. trippy haha

i chose option A; i had inks, acrylics, pen, scratchboard, pencil crayon, oil and just plain pencil, so i thought, hey, why not?
what about you?

2046
March 4th, 2008, 02:19 PM
haha i guess we are in the same lineup then :D Did you hear there was a girl that speaks so loud in the lineup?

I did option B, 13 pencil drawings, 1 ink, and 1 oil painting.

I didn't really have anything to sumbit for option A that closely relates to the list of option B, so i thought better stick to the list.

Hey guys ! I'm applying for illustration too but I didn't go to the portfolio day (I'm in Nova Scotia).

Didn't notice that the school year is 2008-2012, hope I graduate before the Mayan end of the world thing. :P

at least if the mayans were right, we wont have to worry about ending up living in a cardboard box after we're done school!

I mailed my stuff in like the day before the mail-in deadline, because I realized it was sooner than the review date the day I went to go photocopy my stuff. Luckily I finished in time :D

Answering 2046's question before.

Yes there was a tour, they didn't really advertise it. I almost missed it too.

I guess my best portfolio story is losing my crowd drawing art-test and going to Tim Hortons to redraw it the night before it was due...

They keep sending me a mail. the first time they emailed me to check if the address was right. It wasn't; I corrected them. A couple weeks later they phoned me. I gave them the complete address. Ten minutes ago, I got a call from the post office saying that my package is in a town with the same name as mine in California. (I live in North Carolina.

Oh well, anyone whose ever read the Sheridan Information thread knows their bureaucracy sucks.

Zaxser, first place you'll see any updates is under the O.A.S.I.S. Self Service under your access Sheridan (near the top of the menu).

Go O.A.S.I.S. Self Service > SA Self Service > Learner Services > Admissions > View Application Status. It will display there your status for admission into the program(s) you've applied to.

Shiiiiiit. I just realized TODAY that I don't think I filled out the portfolio submission sheet with my portfolio. I did all the other stuff, the check was in there when I mailed it, and I have my name and ID on all the pieces, is this going to be a problem? I should mention that while I still have Under Consideration as my last action, my portfolio has said completed for a few weeks at least.

I should call them.

Ryn

I should call them.

For sure. If you're worried something went awry, or you plain don't understand what the O.A.S.I.S admissions page says about your evaluation, give the registrar's office a ring! They're super friendly and helpful. Any time I had any hesitations when I was applying, I just called them up and the issue would always be clarified or resolved in a few minutes. That's what the service is there for, so never be afraid to use it.

Yes, words like that are like knives. Stabbing at my heart. Again, and again, and again.

Kidding... well half-kidding :P. But still, shouldn't be a need to offend people. Got a rather dismal 1.79 on my portfolio... reaalllyy need to work on my form and line-work. Actually... everything could use improvement, that's just the worse of the lot.

Definitely fundies for next year.

I posted earlier, but once again want to encourage all of you to visit Max the Mutt to see the work of first year students. For all diplomas, first year curriculum is the same - in depth training in what we call "visual arts literacy." We encourage our students to visit other schools, and I encourage you to do the same. The first year show will be up as of April 18 and will stay up for quite awhile. Our senior students and graduates don't have their show until May 30. Come to that as well! We are located in the heart of the art and design district in Toronto, in the same complex as MOCCA ( you can gallery hop) at 952 Queen Street West.

The best of luck to all of you in pursuing your education and your dreams.

D'oh ! I got Application Transfer, does this mean I got no hope left for Illustration ?

liquidtransience
April 5th, 2008, 11:38 AM
Unfortunately it means you didn't score high enough on your portfolio to get a spot in the program. I wouldn't feel too bad about it. This was my third time trying for Animation and I still didn't get a spot. I'm currently first year Illustration, btw. I'm not too upset about it though, because I wasn't even sure if I was going to accept the offer or not. I'm just kind of disheartened because I really tried this time, spending most days in extra-life learning forceful life drawing techniques and cloud gestures...oh well. Not to mention shuffling around many projects with having to finish the portfolio.

Ah well, I suppose it's Interpretive Illustration for me next year!...or Technical D: The dilemmas continue. ;p

Also, I forgot to mention, the application transfer means you'll be transfered into either Art Fundamentals or Visual and Creative Arts. Art Fundies helps one build a portfolio and especially helpful in applying to Illustration. I'd definately keep that option in mind. I'm not too sure about Visual and creative Arts yet, but I think it's kind of a mixed bag of things, where one can pick and choose different types of art courses.

enrigo
April 5th, 2008, 11:54 AM
I guess I'll get into fundies then. :(
I was pretty confident about the portfolio pieces that it was somewhat my best, it is definitely disheartening.

edit: liquidtransience, have you done fundies before ? or did you get into illustration right away.

liquidtransience
April 5th, 2008, 12:11 PM
I didn't apply to Illustration straight out of high school, just Animation. To be honest, I didn't even know an Illustration major existed at that time. After I applied, I started thinking Illustration suited me more.

Anyway, I didn't get in and I took Fundies. It's really what you make of it. Also, you can purchase a life drawing tutor in Fundies, and I believe you can pick if you want a tutor from either Animation or Illustration. Anywho, they'll help you in that area. Go to extra-life drawing whenever possible, but don't forget to improve your imaginitive skills, as well.

After Fundies I lost my way, and applied to photography and got accepted. I lasted a whole week and decided I was a moron and it was a horrible decision to make and withdrew. I didn't apply to Anim. or Illus. after Fundies because I had the mindset that I wouldn't get in, so why bother? Yeah I know, stupid me. Anyway I applied to Illus. last year and got accepted, and that's where I am currently. :P

/life story

So in summary, Fundies will help you if you push yourself to learn more and more and take advantage of what's available to you. You'll make it in. Now I must work on my Psychology essay that I keep putting off. Eep.

Edit: Also, if you have any questions about applying again next year, or want some of your work critiqued but don't know who to go to, I really don't mind at all, just track me down somehow. Just thought I'd throw that out there.

Who got their scores back? I think it'd be useful to post the evaluation sheet because as usual - the things they evaluate you on are NEVER MENTIONED in the application thing when you apply and the student is always left scratching their head wondering how their work is being evaluated.

For anyone applying next year, they'd have a far easier time selecting works or creating new work to get higher scores, knowing what is required of them:

Out of 100:

Drawing (30/100)

Ability to make representational drawings (10)
Understanding of basic compositional principles (10)
Evidence of ability to work with visual ideas (10)

Complementary skills (20/100)

Variety of work (10)

Sketchbook showing PROCESS from start to finish (10) - (which is of course NEVER mentioned in the application as something they wanted to see)

So if your sketchbook doesn't show "visual investigation through inclusion of developmental sketches, sketchbooks or notebooks (indicate materials included) - you got yourself a 6/10 like me, lol. How is one to know this is what they want? Sigh...

Presentation and selection (20/100) -

Is the presentation neat and clean? (10) - dead give-away and seems hardly relevant. Someone who's invested time into a new portfolio gets more marks than someone who uses something beat up? Sighs...

Is the selection of the work appropriate, does it demonstrate the qualities which indicate likely success in the program? (10) - Seems to be a vague, opinion of the evaluator biased mark.

So that's 70/100 right there.

The other 30 is the 5 mandatory drawings required of you.

Demonstrated ability to make representational drawings. (10)

Demonstrated understanding of basic compositional principles. (10)

Demonstrated ability to render form and structure. (10)

I myself got 77/100 which felt like a hard slap across the face. For anyone applying next year, I'd suggest including a few other media to show the "ability to use media" - it's only 10 marks out of the 100. What they want is drawings, drawings, drawings. Representational drawings are also important, am not sure what those are but I'd bet my life on LIFE DRAWING as being it.

So, clean shiny portfolio filled with drawings that show composition, life drawing and good shading technique. Sketchbook filled with PROCESS drawings and you're well on your way :)

Oh btw, the cut-off for getting in is 65/100

Ryn

This just means drawing things from observation rather than out of your head. They want people in the program who have a basic understanding of realism, instead of people who will only know how to approach drawings realistically.

And your note about the cleanliness and presentation of the portfolio - they don't give a toss if you've bought a nice new portfolio. When I applied, I stuck a bunch of random photocopies and extracted sketchbook pages in an envelope; but I made sure they were cut straight, unbent, sprayed with fixative, etc, and still got a good mark on that area. They just want to make sure your work isn't full of coffee stains, tattered edges, and eraser dust. There's a lot of emphasis in the program for having professional presentation of your work, so they're really just making sure you're accustomed to that.

John Doe
April 9th, 2008, 12:50 AM
Even more funny. Apparently one of my marks was an 8 then the marker erased it and put seven on it. Haaaaa.... so close to at least passing....

I do wish the requirements were so damn vague though.

6 in ability to make representational drawings and 6 in ability to work in Visual Ideas... ok.... so what the hell did I do wrong?
