Hi,

I'm new to concept art as a participant. (We'll see if i can post this right on the first try.) I have a lot more free time now and i'm devoting it to painting. I'd appreciate critique on the images below. This is from memory. My goal was to practice color use, so that's a primary thing i'd like advice on, as well as any drawing issues or any tips on process etc. Anything goes. Done in Photoshop by the way. I may take it into Painter to finish it.

this was the first go:

Then I sent it to a friend, and I revised it per his comments. He suggested I take it further and post it here for some more advice.

Wow. Massive improvement between the two. I'm liking where the second one is going so far. I don't really have any critisism to offer for your second piece. Hopefully someone else will be able to chime in with some. :)

Although..looking at it a little longer...the lighting seems a little inconsistent...there seems to be a shadow on the near side of his nose/face, yet the far side of his face also seems to be in shadow, or at least his brow region in comparison to his closer brow. But I like where you're going with the secondary lighting in the back..although given the values that looks more like the primary light.

Maybe background is too simple?

^ It's probably a WIP..

I agree with the comments about your second go at it is a lot better. You fixed some perspective issues. It's interesting to see someone's interpretation of a character. This kind of face features would never have made it in an Image comic - for a good guy at least. But it's good ! It's nice to see someone is not sticking to the stereotypes which end up making characters with.. no character.
I'm a bit confused by your light sources tho. The right-back lighting is great. But what's going on with his left arcade/eye-area ? It seems like there's a lighting trick like in movies to focus the light on a precise place on the face.. Or maybe there's an object that paints those shadows ?...

Anyways, I really like it :) What a blast from the past tho.. ehehe

thanks for the comments. I'm going to work on the lighting issues this weekend, and i'll repost it.

"a blast from the past"...heh...I'm a big fan of early WildCATS stuff. Jim Lee and especially Travis Charest. I really enjoyed his run with the title.

Itīs a young Richard Nixon!
Seriously - you seem to have the technique down, now its only the matter of practice...
