Marksman, look into GIMP. It's a free digital drawing program very similar to Photoshop. Check it out.

hi everyone,
im totally new to this forum, and this is the first thing i've put up here. i just got my art tablet about a week ago and am still trying to get the feel for it. scenery and landscapes are really not my strong point...
also, im not really sure how to upload this correctly. i read there is supposed to be a attachment area with a paperclip icon. i see nothing like this at all so i just used image shack.

It has been a while since my last post. Try to paint here more often now. Hope everyone here in the DSG is doing good.
@Ryoken: Nice view, impressive. Maybe you could paint more details on the sky.
@ Mitze: Nice mountain-background and good designed castle.
@buhlerks: actually my favorite. Like the atmosphere very much.

Tsujni: Good quick sketch like it's supposed to be.
Brat: Dito, could be more spectacular by adding some towers;)
Ryoken: very nice, the dragon gives it something extra, the tower on the left should follow the perspective of the other elements.
Mitze: nice atmosphere, the only thing that bothers me is the photo-ellements shining trough to much in some parts.
Idgestyle: somehow your picture doesn't show immediately, and i'm to lazy to click on links.
Nightbleu: Very, very nice, my favorite so far, quickly done but with huge impact.
Buhlerks: very nice light and depth here, the reflection of the sun implies there's a clear sun standing right above it.
Racasdorph: interesting approach, i don't see a castle though.
Kuth: intriguing design, specially the little park on top looks very uncommon. Maybe you could finish it more.
Wolfchop: welcome, good start, funny castle design, i'm only missing something on the right, maybe an incoming dragon?
Iambanana: the basic elements are there, cant really say much about it.
Gretchen: do castles always come with flocks of birds? I really like the perspective.

Once i begin i can't stop drawing.

Yeah i know what you mean but it so much quicker with them. If i have more time i try to avoid them or make them blend in better.
I got rid of the mountains in the background which i think was the worst offender. Kind of bare now will have to think of something to put there now or balance the pic.

Well, here's mine. I admit, I've never drawn any kind of building before. So the challenge was really beneficial, I learned a lot. Would have continued on this, but I limited myself to an hour and a half (exactly, thanks to Apimac Timer! How I've lived all these years without it, I don't know. :D) just to avoid overworking myself on a study.

I'm lovin' everyone else's 'sketches.' (if they can be called that) Truely inspiring stuff. Really motivates me to improve.

Racasdorph, a little help for you: 2 basic rules for environments 1) At the initial stage of your sketch draw in some perspective guidelines and regularly check that everything is conforming to these lines as you progress. 2) As things get further away intensity is decreased eg. shadows in the foreground are very dark, shadows in the distance are relatively lighter, same goes for highlights and colours will also appear less intense with more distance from the viewer.

This is my first time posting one of these though I've drawn for a couple threads. Environments are something I struggle with terribly so critique is awesome.

Tommoy- crazy! awesome camera angle
Mitze/Gretchen/Wacky Wackowski- great idea with the bridge, it totally makes sense the way you have used it
Kuth/Jack Frost/Brazuka- Cool non-traditional takes on the castle!
Gentrifier- Hah, that is hilarious
Auren- Okay, I will try to critique, but take my advice with a grain of salt since I am not so great myself. It looks kind of like an overcast day in your pic, but the colors are too saturated for that, kind of "local colors"-ey. You do have some light fadeoff as it goes into the ravine which is good. The design makes sense, it has a high tower, perhaps to look for intruders or enemy armies coming down the path, but then perhaps it needs a gate? I dig the idea that it is guarding the path (not sure if that's what you intended or not, but that's what I get out of it) but maybe it could be fleshed out a little bit.
And after saying all that, I present my hypocritically bad-design castle turd with quite a bit of polish on it. Thank god I didn't think of Gondor until later, or I would have totally ripped that off...

90 mins. Stealing some cintiq time at work, after hours, definitely feels more intuitive and natural than the regular ol tablet-and-monitor combo...
Edit: Thanks Tommoy, I took a stab at fixin it

Silentbrain: i like your sketch a lot, the depth it suggests is amazing, the only thing that bothers me is the awkward place of the land down below.
