I've only been a member for a few days so I think for now just keep everything in one place. I would much rather we collaborate on something than to hack the old stuff.

I think the coolest transformer of all of them was Mirage. Although I don't know if he is in the movie he found my sketchbook so I finally broke down a transformation sequence concept. It's kind of a revamp but I kept the style a bit old skool 80s cartoon style. Maybe this is old skool 90s style...

these are some keyframes I looked up on the lightbox. I'm open to suggestestions on how to improve these animations or generate techniques that will help the tweening go smoother. I'm working in the CS3 suit so don't hold back if you have any ideas on generating animations in these programs if you can share them.

Meanwhile enjoy.

TRANSISTOR RODEO (http://markyoshimotonemcoff.com/transistorrodeo/) podcast by MYN
CHAPTER 1

:sungod:

347803

"KA-BAM, KA-BAM. The earth shook in Los Angeles, which anyone reasonably familiar with this little corner of the planet would tell you was no strange happenstance. Except today it was different. Today it was safe to say this was no tectonic shift, no natural event. In fact, this man-made disaster, in terms of mind-blowing experiences, was a complete doozy. But chances were most of those people who would even consider the possibility of how incredibly mind-blowing it was to experience were the very same ones running for their very lives at that very moment from a mechanical and very runaway Tyrannasaurus Rex.

347804

ÜÜÜ That is if they were downtown, with the forty foot tall extremely lifelike robot smashing it's way through the streets of Chinatown--it's large feet smashing downward on abandoned cars strewn across the street while it's tiny pneumatically-powered arms crushed the metal streetlamps in it's path as if they were nothing more than the lines of red paper lanterns strung across the main thoroughfare.
ÜÜÜ If they were on the Westside, by the beach and the Santa Monica pier there was a good chance they were running from one of the many robotic cowboys riding atop robotic horses seemingly rounding up frightened human pedestrians as if they were errant cattle to be driven down to the ocean.
ÜÜÜ And a couple dozen miles away, in the San Fernando Valley, a stampede of robotic elephants, rhinos, moose and lions had brought nearly all traffic to a grinding halt. This was of course due to the incredible number of cars that had been abandoned in the middle of the street by drivers frightened out of their wits by the mechanical beasts running wild through some of the most congested intersections in the city.

347805

ÜÜÜ Yet these folks were not alone for citizens from Long Beach to Silverlake had taken to huddling inside of their homes and offices in fear of the uncontrollable robot rampage running rampant outside. And though many a frantic reporter uttered the same phrase time and time again while helicopter news footage of the mechanical dinosaur smashing its way down the street played on countless television sets around the world, it was safe to say that yes, the city of Los Angeles had come to a complete standstill.
ÜÜÜ To all think that just a few days ago the whole city, nay the whole world, had been swept up in the mania and ferver that only mega-events such as the Superbowl or World Cup can create. A spectacular extravaganza that was to be the debut of the traveling show known far and wide as Transistor Rodeo.

347806

ÜÜÜ And as he sprinted though the gyser of water jetting upward through he pavement where a fire hydrant had once been, Dean pushed the dark wet hair from his eyes and ran faster and harder than he ever had in his thirteen years of life. Each time the T-Rex took one giant step it covered the same ground he could in ten and as his lanky legs grew even more tired, he could tell the massive robotic dinosaur was gaining ground on him by how much more the ground rumbled under him now than just a few seconds ago.
ÜÜÜ Somewhere he hoped his father was having better luck and it was strangely at that very moment that a single thought rocketed through Dean's synapses like a lightning strike.
ÜÜÜ It was right then he tried to tell himself it hadn't always been like this."

Hi there!
first of all, thank you for look at my sketchbook, i'm very glad for your tips and analysis, all people here are helping me a lot to improve my work, and i'm very excited to start apply these in my studies.
I must confess that i barely entered in the concept art world,(and the digital work too) and a lot of things i'm doing is based on works and professionals that i'm seeing, but all this to learn. I know that the "same as always" aren't the best things, but i'm working in something "new" in parallel. And as some people said to me, i'll try to match my traditional skills with my digital skills.
So, thank you again, that was a very good tip and i'm honored to receive it!
And about your portfolio, did you have some Macross references? I see a lot of things that remembered me that (and that's AMAZING!), i like very well the way you put your vision on the works, something it's bit confuse to understand, but i think that's intentional.
So, congratulations!

Hey Lateman, nice`to see your face. OK, i'll post a few studies that I've done for my animation.

It's best that you come up with a method that works best for you in the long run. The stuff I'll post may be older and I'm thinking my methods may be different now as I have different visual needs.

Honestly haven't been doing a lot of studies as a lot of the people on this site are doing. I'm focusing on other technical things that don't neccesarily involve drawing but you can check out my beginnings in attempting to animate while keeping my anatomy going just from imagination on one of my characters...

I don't know how far I'll go with this as I have a lot of sketchbooks. Some good some bad. I dunno, you don't usually post old bad sketches unless you are looking for critiques to make them better. I usually just move on, unless I'm trying to get a character right...

I've tranlates a bunch of anime drawing from popular series into figure drawing. As you would expect some work better than others, and some are completely unfounded in reality. I'll put those up LAST. It's kind of useless to post a lot of disney figure drawing of say Cinderella, as they are continously moving and don't have a nomenclature of poses like anime does. You may recognize a few of the figures from your favorite series! :yayca:

A little more variation in your lines couldn't hurt. I notice that many of your pencil drawings (mostly the mechs) have the same line-thickness all around. That flattens the image out, plus the design tends to get lost.

I enjoy your animations. Keep posting.

For the second installment of the figure drawings series of course will be the female side of things. Personally I think the anime females are more expressive than the males and have a lot of action! With translating them into figure drawings you really have to use your imagination sometimes as a lot of very important curves are sometimes obscured or distorted. You may notice that there are different maturity levels within even in kids shows which makes anime attractive to all ages of animation fans. The same rules apply in terms of figures that didn't meet with the standards of traditional anatomy.

Hey a mad flurry of stuff and hard work!! the studies are getting good and good for you doing them!! the action is your best work - when someone is in action, you are really inspiring me to do more studies!! The submission for heavy metal needs some work, the middle figure looks goos the one on the left looks very thick in the neck area. just slim her neck down a bit. I like the gun! and keep going on these radical diverse studies!! Wow what progress here!!

Thanks Zulu, really app reciate your face here as you are a cool persona and make really neat drawings as well, trying different things all the time trying to expand your range; :)

Well Kelly, what can I say...been tied up a lot lately, more recently than lately with issues beyond my control. So hastily but whole heartedly I've posted this update. I'm trying to animate some more with vectors. These dragons are my latest victims in this regard. I'm not a big dragon person, they always seem to sneak into my sketches when I'm wanting to do a mecha droid destructor cyber being. Or one of my one horned for eyed flying purple people eaters.

Oh well!:perv: Enjoy!

Hey cout>mecha, crazy sketchbook you've got here :) Your animation studies look great, you've mapped out alot of really nice key poses. Really great to see someone doing things in a WB style as well... if I had any suggestions it would that you should try some more curvilinear gestures and such. Your quick sketches are great and you've got nice form to them, but as you know a lot of time in animation the gesture of an individual pose can matter much more than the anatomy of that pose. I would like to see some more line variation as well, but I saw you mentioned earlier on that you are hoping to work on that within a more vectorized program. Keep working at it either way though man, lookin good!

I've been animating little drawing from my sketchbook and put together this gif to plead with Ike to "save us!"

cout, are you in the general Texas area too? It's pretty safe where I am, just lots of wind and rain.

The new animation looks quite good. Having done a few orthos for model sheets, I can only imagine what a pain in the rear animating a guy turning must be. Your cartoon looks good, but the forms are getting lost in the crazy colorful background. Have you tried cell-shading? It might give your cartoon characters some extra depth :)

Keep up the good work!

NB-thanks for droppin in. I find your diligence refreshing. Of course I hear things are nicer up north. Concerning cel shading, well that is an extra layer of depth. This head turn was one of the easier ones. The girl was more difficult with all the hair involved.

I try to capture the nomenclature of fashion so that I don't repeat myself and give me a good reference for animation and the like without being to artey fartey about it. I've modelled the body of the first character and am trying to finish the rest now. If anyone's interested I'll be putting together a few videos on how to make 3D from your sketches, although right now I'm without a mike. haha!

Freexe Render w/Radiosity + Ray Trace

474128

Push all the the render buttons on this one
and the render time was about 6 minutes.
That's pretty nice for my system. None of this
stuff has textures, and think that might be
to much. Not really a texture guy, but I
wanted to try it a bit on this. Who knows...

Freexe Render w/Cel Shading

474138

Just cel shading and outlines on this one.
Trying to get a feel for how this looks since
I will be incorperating some traditional
animation into it. I think the contrast
would be nice. Now I have to start animation.

:medusachow: I could stand a few comments as to your opinions concerning cel shade vs ray trace, or just general tweaks in the picture that I probably won't fix! :ore:

:lounge:

Trying a few excercises to beef up my drawing skills a bit before an interview.
I wanted to try a few different things to see just what the benefits of each
of these practices is/was when I was learning drawing.
479459
Contour-This is probably one of the first things I learned when in school.
A continuous line contour drawing where your pencil does not leave the page
until you are finished. This creates discipline and patience in a medium where
the mind easily wanders onto other subjucts. : ) As your pencil wanders
across the page its not easy to make critical visual judgements with one
eye on the page, one eye on the drawing, and one eye on the visual! Also
did a little silouette to go with that...
479462
Gesture-Forces you to think about gravity, movement, and placement in
a subconcious manner. It helps if you begin a figure with just one line
indicating the overarching average or positioning of the figure. With a little
experience drawing heads or faces its easy to measure the figural lines
against the average and give the drawing a bit of personality. This is also
a basic animation principal.
479461
Geometry2D/3D-I tried a few methods of creating figures using geometry. I know most people find it orthodox to constrain themselves to just cilinders or squares, but that is just the beginning when you start in 2D, and the iceberg tip of what is required in 3D. I found that with 3D my placement and scaling of objects needed work, but in 2D depth perception was a bigger issue.
479460
Drawing/Rendering-When drawing or rendering you will notice that unless a
visual is free of shadows, it may require many passes to understand the
expressions on on faces and where and when an object begins and ends.
You might be accurate but in real life it is difficult to read faces and see
things as they are moving.
479463
Luminance/Negative Space-Really had a tough time with luminance. It more
patience then contour as you are forced to look at chunks of material in a
way that you would not normally see it. It helps to understand light sources
and the way they fall on various objects. I created a this with the idea that
the light was saturated to avoid making value judgements as most people
tend to do in their works here. Everyone is different. : ) Light seems to
only have meaning when their is movement, in this case, the movement of
your eye from one thing to the next.

:carnifex:

Sorry no drawing 2D/3D vids yet, will have to do them over, and find a mike as will.

You've got some pretty crazy stuff going man! I love some of the pencils you've got and the mashups are producing some interesting images. Those cast images you've got for the contest look great! It reminds me a lot of the old Heavy Metal animation. You don't see scifi animation like that anymore :( The last animation you did is interesting, but I wonder how anyone can walk crossing their feet each time? I think it works as an exaggerated sultry walk in animation but the rest of the figure doesn't have as exaggerated movements. I'd love to see some full animation by you sometime! Waiting for more!

Oh and those other things are mostly the animation for a competition next month. :) I'm ahead of schedule but trying not to let that stop me. Not much to say, lots to do 3D and 2D wise. Wanted to pollute the web a bit more with my drivel so these are a few sketchings from my writing notebook that are bound for the heap. A few Robotech musings from Southern Cross and Next Generation.

The southern cross is a revamp of the characters. See if you can guess who's who! Also some skeches of Lancer/Yellow Dancer Moespeda transformation cross-dress transition type thing.

Actually got the itch to composite some of the Survivors into some footage I made in Chicago during my spare time at SAIC. Really I was making one of those voyage/voyeuristic films hoping to call it Virtual Reality since that's as real as it gets, but what happened was I got a lot of shaking camerage footage walking around shipping the camera like some sort of airplane...

704084

Anyways, the results are as follows. The model is still in it's unfinished state as I have been working on other animations and not much use for realism at this point. Still, wanted to see if they would look real so I designed a new blue metal texture for them in the second pic. I'm thinking it'd be really cool to have one chasing me around a bit, or chasing someone...;)

And so, the infamous, not so famed Crann series Inorganic from the painfully belated Robotech Sentinels. I have an Odeon and a Hellcat modelled as well, leaving only the Scrimm to create. Only, I thought there was one in the animation that was extra. Can't wait to rig this one, I've already made the toungue whip around a little! Oh yeah! Boo-riiing! Enjoys...:)

Hey duder

Project stuff is looking good. I think it's great that you're being really liberal with your style and expressing your own vision. Props for that.

That 'Crann' model looks nice, although I have no idea what it is. Haven't watch Robotech since the early 90's!

Keep up the good stuff.

cout<mecha
August 8th, 2009, 02:19 PM
Sketch- thanks for the info, I like this community pretty well right now and Flickr seems vacant. I finished the animation that uses those backgrounds. Perhaps I need a special animation button so people can click it when I'm done. It's called Cafe 4...

HK-Hey, what's been going on, gettin some good stuff over there even some robots. Surprised you don't watch the old eps since that's where it all started! Just ordered season one of the transformers for about 15 smackers along with Macross Zero. About my style, in the words of Daffy Duck-"I wish you'd explain it to me sometime mister!!!" ;)

I'm being lazy in terms of new imagery lately. Really still working on that old animation project as of the summer(it's taking all summer) and a new project I hope to enter into the FOX holiday contest. I'm hoping it will be ready in time but I'm doubting it will. Basically I think these will carry on into September. And of course Playboy had announced the winners of the animation contest and announced that there will be a second round of winners, which means I will re-submit my entry on DVD instead of last minute upload at 4AM before the deadline the next day. Really had to get some music in there that I had the rights to use...
746510
Soooo anyway, I'm posting up some old character designs as of sometime in February, but I'm thinking along these lines for the FOX contest. Kind of an exaggerated anime style. This was the best I could do at the time not having the time to properly devote to studying the style. Nonetheless here were the results.
746509

Also spent some time coloring up the Crann and using different rendering techniques to produce a guide to how different renders will look in Lightwave.
746511

So that's what happened besides spending about 3 weeks on about 15 seconds of animation(probably still not done with that) So here I go again!

too much detail on those keys.
Action one:No anticipation on the first set of keys with that guy spinning.
Action two:No idea what she is doing.
Action three: PUNCHY ARM:When anticipating for the punch let the fist hang back longer, right now you are easing the anticipation in...which is ok, but probably not neccisary. Ease the anticipation out.
GRABBY ARM: Should push the other guy outwards first. The violent party will want to pull his victim in for the impact and so would be anticipating for that pull with a big push probably midway between his starting position and fully anticipating with the Punchy arm. Also when the Victim is hit, on the frame of impact, pull his head back. There is no need to show the fist and his face touching eachother, they probably shouldn't even occupy the same space. It will make it look like the dude is getting hit harder.
Action four: Don't draw a neck inside a necklace. Draw the neck then when it looks good put on some furnishings. You have to save dessert till last.

So get your action working, then when you are sick and tired of being an animator you, gritting your teeth because its too late to turn back, draw the furnishings. IE: Oxygen tank, crazy boots. Otherwise you won't want to finish the action out.

Hey cout<mecha, great work recently! Coulda sworn I posted in here not too long ago, though doesn't look like I actually did... sorry about that :x Yes though, I really like these character designs (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=746509&d=1249757328), great variety and uniqueness to each of em. The guy all the way to the left is a little floaty compared to the rest, but I imagine that's just because his toes are pointed a bit more down than the others. Best of luck with the FOX animation contest, seeing the super saturated colors and the mix of 2D and 3D would be a breath of fresh air for em ;) hehe These models look really nice as well, nice complexity to each of em. Modeling is definitely not a strong area for me so I can't offer much in the way of criticism, but they are lookin good to me! hehe

I had to come up with some crazy characters to exist in this new dimension so I was think of what I said back on page 4 when I was thinking about this short. I really was able to get some cute characters going and make the behave the way they should...

Start out with a few polite sketches, wanted them to be devils, but when is the last time you saw a cute CG devil? :mod:

795166 795165

Had an interesting time with the rigs but did not refine too much. After all ART is about solving problems! ;)

795167 795168

So anyway I eventually got everthing working good with these 5 characters as you will see...

CAPTAIN SKETCH-Sort of a hybrid hero type if you know what I mean...:muscle:

795173 795171

LAGER-Sort of a high pitched slightly affeminite dragon/donkey/zebra hybrid.:cheerleader:

795170 795169

WEBSTER-He is sort of you're basic standart character with 'bug' eyes. He just likes to walk...:overhere:

795189 795183

GRAHAM-he/she is the cutest of them all. A feist woodland type that is only slightly psycho!:eyecandy:

795175 795174

NIVEK-Has a weight problem but doesn't know it. There is not enough green blood and air getting through his head! Ooops! He is nice tho! :pump:

Hey man! I agree with HunterKiller, these are nice stuff you are doing and if you want to take it further and beyond I would highly recommend drawing more traditional studies to strengthen those foundations. Everybody needs it and the sooner we all get lots of practice in them the better our work will turn out. So try get some of those going alongside what you are doing.
Personal opinion but the number of highly saturated colours are burning my eyes :P Perhaps tone it down, you could try it out and see if you like the results. Crazy ideas dude!

I like your mechanical stuff, but from what I have seen in the color choices; most of them are hard on the eyes. You might want to get help with that, along with the image quality. (I know you're trying to keep the filesize small, but the quality could be a bit better.) As for your figures, you might want to check out some books on anatomy when you get the chance.

Colors added also, sometimes they are too hard because there are not much complimentary colors like brown/underasturated colours with hard neon colours.Well experimenting will tell what works for you and what not, keep on doing the original approach othevice

Austin-thanks for stopping by, couldn't find that MD Geist character anywhere. Maybe you can post a link. By the way how are things going in your new place? Went to Comicpalooza last week at George R. I hope to get better as I go along here, anything constructive you can say about how things can improve would be great. Otherwise I'll just take it as a compliment! :)

Sorry I haven't been responding to everyone's post, but for a while I lost the ability to make different color text for some reason. I still can't post video!!! Below is a slideshow of drawings done with different types of distorted perspectives. This is important to understand when it’s neccessary to create animation(or drawing) that cannot be done using traditional CG techniques including camera lens distortions. Hope you like! :)

Hey Mr.Mecha, keeping it busy with all of these animal drawings, really nice stuff, they look really well constructed and very proportional. The last batch of them you uploaded are extra nice. I need to do more like that myself. Crazy fun colors as always. Also really dig your "OBFUSCATE" painting, though those squiggle men lost a lot of definition and mass in the final painting. if you could help bring out those intersecting loops in their body with added highlights and low lights i think they wouldn't look so flat. Also, haha, i like what you did with the f-18, that mapping is simplicity itself, and it ended up looking really nice for how simple it was.

Always fun to come in here, looking at your work send my brain down avenues it usually doesn't venture into, good stuff!

By the way, sometime i'd like to see some more line definition from you in your pencil stages, more often than not your ideas and execution are really well done, but the loose pencils make it look unfinished. I'd like to see some tighter pencils and more solid line practice from you.

Anyway, Keep it up!

cout<mecha
September 3rd, 2010, 04:42 PM
Really just doing underdrawing these days with an ink on top. It's unusual for me to ink and I like the way it holds up under the scanner. Concerning the pencils, really the author of this book "drawing animals" by Jack Hamm suggests that I just do light suggestive shapes and then create the drawing in the medium.

To be sure, I'm done with the precision nothingness the penciling brings to the digital process. It always means I have to go cleaning everything up and closing loops that are faded. Y'know I'm not sold on realistic human anatomy so I guess you will probably see the exact opposite from me in terms of defining humans.

The stuff you do(Austin and others) really amazes me because it's not so realistic and yet there is still that sense of striving for anatomy. That abstraction is what I need from art, and also animation. But with animation its a serious matters about the rules and knowing how to literally bend them!

Glad you like OBFUSCATE. Hoping it lives up to its name. Thinking about closing those loops but the glowing gives the figures an hyperreal aspect that I thing pops or not. Might be done with it. Also you forced me to look back at those animals and noticing there's not to much fronts on the bovies and the hooves had gotten better but still look a bit stilty. Gotta nail them hores shoes right! Anyway here comes some Dojinshii style!! Thanks for the eyes!

Yeah Rami I am still looking into the animal thing and will be for a while.
