Hey everybody. I've been browsing around here for quite some time now and decided I wanted to start my own sketchbook trying to improve my drawing skills.
For a start here are 2 moviestills (took about an hour for each one). One DSG and some Oilpaintings. The last one is a self portrait.

Hopefully i'll get around to update from time to time :)

Off to a good start, the self portrait is the best so far, I think.

Moar!

Thanks guys.
Here's some stuff i had to do for uni. I really wanna do something other than those lifeless studies. Trying to get into anatomie atm. So there'll be a few hopefully not soo shitty sketches in the future ;) Any tips on how to approach learning anatomy? We haven't had act drawing yet at our uni, but i don't really wanna wait :)

The following pics are done with pencils + coloured pencils, except for pic 3+5 which are done with ballpointpen.

I really admire your studies. they look pretty damn exact and well done. you really do some nice rendering with pencils and ballpoint pens. love all the marbles..
when it comes to anatomy you should have a look at loomis' books and bammes which I really like and you might know as well. bridgeman must be really helpfull as well.
but I'm not the one to talk. gotta do loads more studies. and drawing from life is what helps you improve tremendously. you'll find out yourself when you have your courses. what uni are u studying at?

pandahund
March 2nd, 2008, 01:43 PM
Thanks man. I'll have a look at those. I study at the "Ruhrakademie" in Schwerte. Looking forward to those courses.

Here are two "quick" photostudies. I want a tablet :\

Ok, so at the beginning of the semester we had to do that smartiesglass

http://freenet-homepage.de/pandahund/glas.jpg

And now at the end of our semester we had to do it again to show how much we have improved. They're not really compareable since i used a photo for reference for the new one but meh...

loving the studies especially the coloured leaves and the second glass with the ice. I also really like that space enviro, got some class there.

My crit for ya is on this last piece, a lot of the shapes you are using are tending to flatten the image, like the straps across his chest or the frilly cuff. Try to think about how these things would conform to the guy's body in real life.
Also think about the way light would be affected by the position of objects (why is he blue on the opposite side to the gun? Where does the lightsource affecting the sleeve go on the shoulder pad and helmet?)

April 12th, 2008, 10:47 PM
your pencil stuff are really something to look at. I will say with your some your digital pieces the color seems to be a weakness for you, particularly the first two in post #8. The values could be pushed a little more I think.

You have serious skill going on here otherwise, I look forward to more of your posts.

pandahund
April 13th, 2008, 04:27 AM
Thanks for the crits guys. Yeah the lightsource kind of ended up being upside down all around... I gotta be more careful in future pieces. You're right about the straps now that i got an eye for that again ;) You think it could help if I added a slight reflection of the light emitting from his gun?

As for colour in general. I for myself think i've made a bit of progress in that department. You'd probably agree if you knew older attempts but yeah, some stuff of mine looks pretty flat. When i finally get a tablet I'll get around to do more colour studies by then because as working with a mouse is still a bit awkward. You can't blame everything on that though :D

Thanks again for your comments!

nice studies dude... and great sketches.. one thing i could say about your gunarmguy is that his shirt is the same color as his skin and that is confusing..

pandahund
April 20th, 2008, 01:41 PM
Yeah, you're right. I should change the colour.

Here's a doodle from saturday. Trying out new pencils and paper. Did a quick colouration as well...

July 28th, 2008, 03:22 PM
Thanks for the comments guys. Yeah, i am actually getting a hang of the tablet. It's getting more and more fun and it's very motivating, knowing how it was like, working with a mouse before...

Kinda doodled around and this came out. I obviously still need to work on faces... But hey. It can only get better :D

pandahund
July 29th, 2008, 09:50 AM
Did a selfportrait from old photo reference. Kinda cheated though as i picked the values :( What do you think?

The proportions are kind of fucked ... but it can only get better i suppose :)

Very nice work. I love the tripod robots with the "egg beaters"?,the amputee, and as you've been told already the glass still life drawings are excellent. I think the self-portrait is coming along nicely, maybe the edge of the right nostril is too hard though, seems to flatten that side of the nose. Either way your way better with a tablet than I am. Keep drawing.

July 29th, 2008, 02:02 PM
Hey Pandahund. I really like the latest selfportrait. Very nice colors and lighting to it. It's great to see all those life figure studies and hand studies.

Keep up the good work!

pandahund
July 29th, 2008, 05:05 PM
@photosynthesis: Thanks man. I think you're right about the nostril. Now that you say it, it does look a little harsh.

@yousa: Glad you like it :) I gotta do lots more studies though :o

We were talking about this in IRC yesterday and I think you can benefit from the conversation too --- you already draw "things" well.

But really drawing the human body well will help you draw everything else well, because it's so complex. So don't worry so much about photo referencing a rocket or a cave and just do people, people, people. The more you draw people well, the easier everything else is. They become ridiculously easy to draw and render actually, after doing people.

You are learning really fast though! I mean, from the first few posts to your last self portrait, you did not skew this one as much and the colors and values were very good.

Did you use a photo-reference or just a mirror?

pandahund
July 31st, 2008, 10:01 AM
This was photoreffed and i picked the values.. Shame on me :( I was just concentrating on gettings the proportions right for now. I gotta start getting the values on my own. Thanks for the encouragement. I'll concentrate more on people from now on :)

Suira
July 31st, 2008, 10:18 AM
Man, I really like some of the stuff you got going on here, that las SP, looks cool.

But yeah, I think you still need to work on human figure and imaginarty stuff, but your progress is totally awesome man, keep it up!

pandahund
July 31st, 2008, 03:18 PM
@Suira:Thanks man. Concentrating on figures atm :D

Here's some more Bridgman..

monotony
August 5th, 2008, 05:59 PM
wow man, I really like your self portraits. nice touch with adding some more colors especially in the shadows. You should try doing the next one from life to see if you can get the likeness and the colors you seem to get when working from photoref. remembering the great pencil and ballpoint studies I'm sure you can pull it off.
the development you show with your digitals is great. the tablet is good for you dude.

pandahund
August 6th, 2008, 09:24 AM
@monotony: Thanks man, gotta get a proper mirror so i can start doing it without photorefs. And yeah, the tablet is great :D

Finally finished the fourth vector animal... Kinda got caught up in details. What do you think?

pandahund
August 7th, 2008, 01:16 PM
Experimented with markers and ballpoint pen D: Kinda screwed up...

pandahund
August 10th, 2008, 01:37 PM
Did two photostudies. Getting used to no colorpicking... bad me *slaps* Oh yeah, and another fast vector animal as i don't really wanna invest that much more time into this project. Two to go :)

What do you think?

Farvus
August 10th, 2008, 05:29 PM
Nice sketchbook. I dig the vector scorpion. At first second I thought it's 3d render :D. Those more enviromental paintings also stand out. The colours are harmonious and pretty realistic. In the one with the helicopters I would be more careful while suggesting ground texture. Too loose scribbles can read as random detail which distracts and kills the composition.

Keep posting, man :).

August 10th, 2008, 05:58 PM
hi pandahund...your eye and hand coordination is the higest guality but your figure drawing is lacking a bit dont get me wrong your figur and anatomy studys are good...i suck lol your much greater thean me im new at drawing lol.

Here's the two animals which i had left to do. Rather cheaply when you compare them with the scorpion... but i just wanna finish that task now...

On to other tasks now :D

Well, maybe i'll change it.

August 20th, 2008, 03:45 PM

August 24th, 2008, 05:14 PM
Thx for stopping by my sb, Your pencil stuff is amazing. Don't worry about the pose maniacs stuff i tried a bunch and they looked rubbish. every once in a while one goes right. my only hope is over time more of them start going right.:yayca:

TLL
August 24th, 2008, 05:43 PM
JD looks good I think. Elliot looks a bit strange. I don't know why, cause I suck on portraits myself. Maybe the neck is a bit to shourt?

PS: What do you study and where (I'm searching for some good unis here in germany)

pandahund
August 25th, 2008, 03:13 PM
Yeah, that's what i've mainly been working on the past few days... Any questions as to why i hate haribo?
Now most of you people will understand the pic with the dude who's got an axe in is head.
This was rather boring to do ;( Glad i'm finished now!

Oh yeah, and 2 hands from life (I'll do more of those. they were fun). Moreover those two boxing guys which i started from a photo.
Well, like 40% off the photo. The other 60% i kinda did out of the blue while i was "watching" tv, which probably shows in weird anatomy or something.

And the last pic was one minime selfportrait i did with the shitty mirror i found.
The likeness is a little bit apparent :D Could have been worse i guess. I'll do more of those in the future. That other guy on the right was result of doodling.
The eyes are weird... Enough talking :) Now for the pics

Tigermilk
August 25th, 2008, 04:26 PM
holy shit! The haribo bag is fucking insane!
coloured pencils?

Keep it up!

pandahund
August 25th, 2008, 06:54 PM
Thx man. Took long enough... ;) And yeah, colored pencils.
Can't see them anymore :D Tomorrow i'll post another photo with the
actual bag next to it i think.

monotony
August 27th, 2008, 03:51 PM
dude, that candybag looks like one hell of a lot of tedious work! great finish, though. looks very very good.
your sketches are improving as well.
flesh out some of the concepts a bit more. no matter if it is creature character or environment. or one of these painterexperiments. because if you try to get pieces to a more finished state it'll be more obvious to yourself what you need to work on.
anyway these animal vector illus a cool.

Kfeeras
September 2nd, 2008, 10:32 PM
i think the animal painting series could need a little more consequence in terms of amount of detail: the scorpio is pretty tight rendered, while the lion is just a silhouette.

The lion seems to have only three legs: one leg is covered by the other. what may look normal on a photo seems a little odd in such an stylized interpretation. but thats just a minor thing.

I think the most room for improvement lies within figure drawing. You're on the right way with the posemaniacs stuff. What helped me alot: If you're not happy with the result of 30 sec drawings, set the time to 60 seconds. Gesture drawing has to be practised stepwise. When you find that its too long then just gradually go down with the time. My goal for someday is 10 second gesture drawing where you can see the pose and gender of the figure.

Respect on that Haribo! Don't wanna know how much time you've spent on this!

Keep postin and studying!

I like your brush experiments. Try some more hand studies, especially fists grasping shapes like cylinders, cubes, spheres, etc. I say this because I saw two monsters grabbing weapons with really squishy, soft hands.

Thanks for the advice, guys. Sorry for no updates. I am currently busy with graphics designs semester task. Don't know if that fits in here but what the hell. At least you'll know what i am working on...

Currently doing a magazine fake (intended for cannibals)

It's only 18 pages, but typing my own articles is rather time intensive. Guess, I'm not the born writer. I have like 5 pages left to fill. After that you can expect a rather big illustration in the near future. More crazy devastating kitchentools... yayy :D

pandahund
September 17th, 2008, 12:38 PM
Hoorayy, the magazine is finished. And the Illustration i promised last "update".. is ready too :D
MEATGRINDER MECHS IN TOKYO... lol.. Whatever.
I did some shitty scribbles upon which i based some basic models i did.
I used those to set up a scene in 3d and did a very basic render to paint over. This was kinda fun to do...

Oh yeah, and I attached a new photo of that haribo bag with better lighting. Plus the magazine i did.
For a closer look click here (http://www.file-upload.net/view-1101626/magfin.jpg.html)!

Haha! Awesome magazine! And the meatgrinder mechs are cool. I'd like to see some of that grinded meat on the streets. You've improved a lot. Is your teacher forcing you to do those object drawings? In that case I guess I can understand why you drew those lovely portraits of him. :P Kudos to your patience!

pandahund
September 18th, 2008, 08:29 AM
Yeah, we were kind of forced to do that ;) But it's not my teacher in that drawing. It's Thomas Gottschalk. He's doing advertisement for haribo around here. Though you're right, he'd fit in there perfectly :D

Really like some of the work you are doing in this sketchbook. It show a lot of different skills and does load you down with too much studywork. In fact it's quite entertaining. Can't wait to see where you go with all that.

Have fun!

monotony
September 18th, 2008, 12:23 PM
wow, nice update.
the meatgrinders piece is really good. love the scene and the colors are nice as well. one thing that bugs me a litte bit is the perspective on the houses. some of them seem to have a third vanishing point some have don't and a lot of them have just slightly off verticals. it's not that much of a big deal looks just a bit strange with very straight white lines on the street and lanterns and then houses that look abit too eyballed.
the 3d model is very cool though. and the magazine looks like an interesting read :yum:
mmmh brainburgers..

The walking meat grinders make me happy, am I sick? They are brilliant fun. I'd like to see them chasing masses of people.

Also, the Blizzard fanart... Only a mouse? I'm going to find a way to set your wondering kitchen utensils on you. :[

Been quite busy with unistuff in the past time. Here's some excerpts.
We had to create a font out of ... any.. stuff and do a book out of that.
So i took some electrojunk out of the basement and basically made it a font.
Those silouettes are made out of the corresponding letters.

Those mattepaintings were to the topic "holidays in unusual places".
Photos i used were mostly found on google imagesearch. They were quite fun.

Last but not least there's a few figures.
Finally got new models to draw from... yay :D

To be more exact. The story of Icarus.

I really like #94 because I never painted, and I like your 3D models,
my first thought about the solders was that it looks to friendly, the colors.

Some of your stuff reminds me on Moebius ,,Herscher der Zeit'' if you don't know this movie, it's worth to watch it.

Oh by the way if you photograph your stuff adding some contrast make's the picture more visible, your nude stuff is great but I had a hard time to see it.
