Hi I'm new here and I'm uploading my sketchbook.
I'd like to hear your opinions about my drawings so that i know what to improve. Thanks:medusachow:  all my other drawings still need to be resized. Some of my drawings are also fanart I hope it's ok to draw once and a while from your favourite game or manga I'm not claming the copyright.

Well, i see a lot of good stuff here, i like your studies but it seems you have some trouble keeping symetric proportions, still your style is cool and there is great potential here, anatomy studies are always good, but in your case i would recomend mirroring drawings, trying to do the same drawing, right next to the original, but facing the opposite direction, so that you improve your sense of simetry. Keep it coming!

Very nice works here. Your doing great on those studies. There's some flatness here and there though. Pay carefull attention to your construction. Always find the top/bottom and sides of a form and look how these planes are oriented in perspective. Also study the eyes more carefully, they too have a front and a side. In your drawings you really flatten them out. Remeber that it's a sphere and the lids wrap around it. The lids also have thickness to them so when drawing the eye from the side this thickness should be made evident.
I hope you can get something out of this. Keep up the hard work!!

nyssa,

after looking at the work i'm really impressed with the breadth of subject material you've got up here, its fantastic to have that range to pull from when you're making a picture, my only advice'd be for intents and purposes of learning - you may want to ween away from anime/manga for a while, and focus on studying from master paintings/drawings. i saw the word flat tossed around once or twice on this thread and i think that [anime] may be part of that because of the flat tonal rendering or screentoned shading in anime/manga, i say this cuz i think it's such a STRONG style it has a tendancy overpower your work when you're looking at it a lot (i speak from experience) but looking into some master work and as it's been said to death, practice practice, i think based on the scope of work you have here, the more you draw, the more you're going to just see yourself improve exponentially.
p.s. great site for study examples www.artrenewal.org new and old master paintings.... in BIG filesize!

Yay, thanks so much for your comment. :) Now I feel so much more motivated and it would be great to keep in touch and share our knowlage about our styles. We could learn so much from each other because we have so different styles. :D Now I'm gonna subscribe to your skechbook so I can comment when ever you post something. :)

how old are you?
Very good work, I'd like to see more.
Three things I can tell you, numer one is: If possible try that old excercise of drawing lots and lots of boxes in perspective (no grid needed, except just to check that you're doing it fine). Remember that every single thing that you draw can be decomposed into simpler shapes that you can use as guidelines for your drawing.
-Second thing (and this you seem to have done it wonderfull so far) is: try to apply everything you learn to the drawings that you make for pleasure. I mean, usually one divide his work in two: pleasure and learning, try to brake the barrier between this two.
-Third thing (a very important rule): Try to draw most of the time what you don't know how to draw. It's very common for example to draw the head from the side or from the front, If possible, try insted to draw it from above, or below. The same goes with everything, as soon as you get confortable drawing something, and you think that you sort of have mastered it then move into something that you haven't. This way you'll keep improving and your evolution will be very fast.
Remember that it's more about improving fast than about being good at the beginning of the race.

Hi I was going to a friend of mine in Antwerp to study traditional art and I like it I'm gonna try to do some paintings it's so much fun! I made some new drawings ,the fantasy art that I drew this time is for fun but the other ones are for learning purposes.

March 14th, 2008, 01:32 PM
You have a lot of unusual figure studies here and they look very nice. I hope that pays off. I cannot fault your accuracy. It might be confusing to compose all of the technique into a figure.

Pierce.
March 14th, 2008, 02:09 PM
Your individual studies of facial features look pretty good, but it seems that when it comes time to incorporate them into a total composed face, their is a lack of cohesiveness. It looks like the separate parts are just kind of floating a little. My advice would be to focus on the volume of a face in head studies and don't get wrapped up in the details of the individual features until you have their placement and depth secured.

Nice work and good progression.
Keep it up!

Hi nyssa,

Your drawings are coming along nicely, I agree with Crazy Pills get those volumes down and build on top of that, structure is very important.

Thanks guys I'll keep that in mind. I'm studying fashion design but it's not the same as fantasy art and drawing from life. It's helpful for me to develop some technique I learn how I have to start drawing an eye and different perspective but It's not the same like in reality. So after fashion design when I feel a bit confident I try to draw a lot from life. Once and a while I study anatomy by myself , to try to understand how a body works. I try to do all this because I get bored after a while. I try different styles cause I don't know my own style yet! I have trouble focusing on one thing , cause sometimes if I'm too busy with fashion design or drawing from life. I don't see progress. I hope it's ok to do that once in a while. Otherwise if you find that I have to focus on one thing only ,than let me know if I'm wrong. I'm here to learn.

Thanks a lot I'm working on it. I hate skeletons. It took me a while to get it but I kept on going even if I'm bored, i try. For the first to try something it's always slow when I'm working on it but it's the end result that counts and remembering the technique. Sometimes if I'm really bored I go back to fantasy drawing. So I can keep it up so I hope you relax from time to time.
Thank you for the link that's so sweet! :sungod:

hey there ;), I love your trees - they look really promising, definitely you've improved your skills from the begining but you know practice is the key ;) like your motivation a lot and that tell me I should to do more studies.Keep your anatomy studies up and most improtant is - HAVE FUN :) about those buildings, mmm when you decide to draw them try to make it in two or three point perspective, in some of the mentor threads yesterday I saw perspectice exercises, take a look at it and then try it out ;) you'll see how easy the things can be.I'll keep eye on you!

Hi I've been working with watercolors lately it's kinda hard to start with, my very first paiting to get involved with watercolor is the manga i drew from ghost in the shell so i could get in touch with the color and feel how to work with it and now i'm trying to do some flowers it's really hard to mix the same colors all the time. Hopefully someone can help me out and give me some pointers and i really need to loosen up my drawing style with anatomy everything is so uptight i can loosen up with a ballpoint but with a mechanical pencil not. I also went to the city to try out and draw people instead of always staying at home it's hard when people you draw move i hope i'll get better soon.

Hi haven't been online here for a while just decided to upgrade my sketchbook give comments on what can improve thanks! The teacher gave us different tools to work from ink to pencil and pastel etc... Enjoy!
The bear I drew is from a stuffed animal and when we had to draw pastries or cakes I became really hungry lol! It's really fun to work with pastel and that guy I drew I took a picture from it because that paper was really huge I never worked on a large canvas like that and i had fun doing so!

It was fun to do so and I would like to do this to on my tablet one day because i am not very good with a tablet i don't have a steady hand. The picture I posted on today is the only picture of my first painting from Ghost in the shell. Someone stole it, its not really the best painting but still it has some valuable value to me because it was my first painting. I was really sad when that person took it and I have no proof. But hell ya, life is a bitch sometimes and we'll make better ones and hopefully it won't happen again. I also have a nice kitty cat who inspire me getting better and help me through bitter times. She is very play full her name is pookie and I adore heer. The other drawings that you see are from school again. Anyway I have been doing lots of updates really I hope you like it and for comments please leave it if there is something wrong. I would really like to know because sometimes I don't seemed to notice it at all after staring to much on my own work. I am really happy going to artschool and have a teacher who understands me! Hi Nyssa - thanks for your nice comment in my sketchbook. Looking through yours it's clear you've progressed alot since you started. Art school is great, I wish I was back there :D, what course are you studying?

Hmm, the only tips I can think of at the moment are just to keep doing what you're doing, you seem to be studying a range of subjects which is good. I would suggest maybe making your pencil lines not as heavy in your finished drawings, I like the last sketch you did of the man in the hat where you've varied your line weight and played around with it a bit.

I would suggest Loomis too, also Vilppu is a good artist to study he did great gestural drawings which I think would help you with your lineweight.

Keep at it :D

Hi Thx for your comments. I was stuck with drawing studying by myself. I had only books to teach me that's why so many variaties at my sketchbook. I am glad i am taking art class now I have a great teacher and she is really motivating unlike my last one.

I actually study game design. I have to write alot of documents and come up with a concept for a game. Intially I wanted to become a concept artist at first but they don't have a school for that here in Belgium. Game Design is fun too. You are allowed to play with your imagination and you write about it. I follow art so that instead of only explaining it with words I can also show it visually. I want to show to my concept artists what I am really looking for and that I am not misunderstood.

I should really put a topic up here on concept art maybe I can attract some people to work with me! Anyway thanks for your lovely comment and I'll keep on drawing and writing see ya! xxx

Hi the teacher gave us a new way to loosen up by not looking at your paper and just draw by what you see. She told me some will look very bad if you are not familiar with it , you have to feel where you put the pencil down without watching what's on your paper! It's really frustrating at the start and some of my drawings ended up more like a cartoon, well i hope you enjoy what I am going to post!
