View Full Version : Andrew Jones Boss Monster Part 1 (of 2)

February 28th, 2008, 09:55 PM
Hey guys... we've got another one. This one is a little different and includes some live footage from the event. Hope you enjoy it! :)

Concept artist "Android" Jones, famed for his contributions to games like the Metroid Prime series, unleashes his shape-shifting demons to create a boss monster character. In this Q and A style interactive demonstration, recorded live at the 2008 Revelations Workshop in Seattle, Android covers Zbrush and Painter X, workflow and philosophy. By bridging the gap between the technical and the creative, this lesson will show you how aggressive shapes and a simple color palette can open up infinite possibilities to the adventurous digital artist.

I'm Buying This.

Now.

Edit: I've bought about 5-6 videos so far, I was wondering if you guys could possibly do like a combo purchase deal where you buy both parts instantly for $20 (even if the 2nd part isn't out yet) but $14 if bought separately? I'm becoming broke with all these amazing videos :(

I think Andrews work is amazing. But I do not think this dvd is suitable for me as he uses a software I do not have on my mac and rarely use on my PC.

I hope it works (usefulness) for those that download it!

Always a pleasure to watch Andrew Jones workflow, give a lot of inspiration. Hope the second part will come shortly. Another great release!
Just one thing annoying, there is some sound 'problems', some times the sound cute for 1-2 seconds. I thing is the original sound record that have been cut for the purpose of this video (dont seems to loose something) but it's abrupt.

One thing that could be great for a next release, is to see Andrew make a sketch with is workflow and after that another one from MB bring it into a full 3D model (for still, animation, or why not game).

I hope you will continue to do release like that and so often all the year!

PS: Like Akaikami, I think you should release the bunble of part 1 - 2 with the lower price (20$ like other vids) even if the second part isnt out, and send the download like when it's done. Would be appreciated for people who bought vids just when they are released :yum:

Cosign,

A series of videos that are made by multiple people at MB, like a thumbnails brainstorming research movie, a concept mood sketch movie, a modeling one by a different person, a texturing one, etc. All of which are for the same imaginary project. So we see how it goes through the whole pipeline, touched by different people at MB.

Also:

Is there going to be a part 1 and 2 for $20 like Coros? I really appreciated that.

And Janni, in the two years I have been part of this community I have been to both workshops, and bought 2 DVD's and EVERY download so far. Not to mention shirt calendars and more. I certainly appreciate what Jason and MB do for us, but I have supported Almost $1500 worth of the community and still will continue too. As a starving artist, I don't think it is greedy to ask for them to sell both parts of the same lecture at a discount to loyal customers.

I was sitting front row center for this presentation at the workshop, and I can say this:

BUY THIS NOW!

Really, In all seriousness this demo stands out among the top 3 highlights of the entire workshop for me personally.
I have a few pages of written notes from this and will be buying the video download shortly based on how utterly kick ass it was in person.

Thanks again MB.

Why ashamed? When the two parts are aviable they sell the two at 20$, so why not make this promo aviable at the begining with the second part 'prepurchased' and aviable at download at the begining? It's a good commercial act for people who bought vids when they are released.

I was thinking about something : all the 3d geometry construction can be done in any 3d package, then rendered and bring into zbrush for deco brush and painter for refining. that must be slower than zbrush but you have the advantage to change the camera angle, make multiple shots and adjust the geometry like you want (on zbrush after it's put on the canvas you can't edit it). SOmething to try...

The only one that was released for 20$ was Coro's Gun Demo. I realy doubt they'd offer an discount after everybody already bought the first one for 14. Even Apple didn't get through whith that without a bruise. ;)

I didn't intended to break loose an argument about that discount question. But are your guys realy sure you can't save those 8 bucks anywhere else? Other people take 40 to 100 for their vids. Look at what schools take for that information. They raised the prize to 14 cause of higher production costs. I realy don't want them to make a loss or have ads on this site instead or stuff.

Seriously, no offence, i know what it's like to be an starving artist. But think about it. Those 14 bucks are a friggin steal. :) :)

I just bought Coro demo as bundle, and thought it was same for others, my mistake. It wasn't a question of high price, just that if after second part is released they make a bundle at 20$, it's a bit unfair for people who bought the first part before. I dont want polemic around this, and you know, even if it's just 10$ saved, that always help when you don't have a high situation.

14$ is fine, I never complained it was too high. Waiting second part an other releases with impatient!

Thank you everyone for your positive response and your support, with each download we are learning more and more about how to refine our process so the feedback is really valuable,

i want to cover a few broad questions, part one and part two will be separate downloads, once you see part too i promise you will understand why.
part one was released first because we finished it first, once part too gets the final polish i will make that available,
in this case i can assure you that both parts take very different approaches to the creative process, they were recorded on different days in front of different audience and address different creative situations.

Akaikami, your support is appreciated , there will be no combo on this download and you will see why soon.

hm333, thank you , i think in the second download i explain the advantage of not referring to our art as shit,

Rist- i see your point, .I think it depends on where you are on your creative path, Do you wish to Expand your possibilities?, or refine your craft?. For the beginners i encourage the expansion and experimentation. because i know it worked for me.

Takkik Thank you , showing a pipeline would be a great idea, thank you for your suggestion, I plan on releasing many more downloads and any feedback or suggestions will steer my future direction.

Lotet , i appreciate your satisfaction,, if you like good one liners be sure to check out part two, i had lost my voice from part one and my mood is in rare form.

janni -your welcome, we are all learning together , we at MB are confident that the energy we ask for this information we provide is in integrity . but thank yo for your defense;)

GusTheRobot- I hope you will also need a bigger hard rive for all the art these downloads will inspire;)

buhlerks- your support it is recognized and we are grate full for it, you wont be disappointed , it never hurts to ask, and we take all of your requests seriously ,

kraal , that is a fair request, this is a highly competitive Field on multiple levels and its our intention to get the information out to you ass soon as possible.

S!R- wow a repeat offender, that's great, that makes me very happy, thank for showing up and being part of it all in person.

gruve24 , thank you . the money we ask for is an arbitrary number , the real value is up to you and what you get out of it

Takkik, I see your point ,well after heavy consideration i have made a decision, their will be no bundle for this series, . but i want to honor the 20 dollar request, so after part two is released part one will be available for 20$, sound good ;) so the sooner you buy the sooner you save, we like to reward loyalty

Takkik it is the entertainment industry after all

janni- thanks again , because we are starting out with our prices so low they will most likely increase over time, as quality increases so will production costs,

Takkik-- your concern is valid, part two is on the way !!

buhlerks the music on this one was supplied my my friend

Hehe and after 1 year, the vid cost 200$ ? :bashful: :asspat:

Raaah, when it's come out? when it's come out? when it's come out? :bounce:

Do you model your own geometry for composition, or only use prefabe (or slave human modelers like for the heart)? Something like in the first movie about zbrush-painter shape theory. I mean creating random shapes, and them bring them into 3D for use them in new compositions. If not that could be an interesting workflow to follow:
Random shapes (ZbrushPainter) > 3D Shapes (3d package - Zbrush) > New compisition (Zbrush - Painter) > 3D final model / Illustration

Just watched it and I think its amazing. You're a true entertainer Andrew, its great to learn and laugh at the same time.

I remember hearing something about when humans laugh, they put their conscious guard down and take whatever that's being given to them as it is, with no prejudice or pre thought. Whether it's information or advice. So its great to have people like you share your knowledge the way you do it.

Some of his "clothes" Andrew has stated are custom-made - for example, his wacom strap.

Also, Frisco is a great place for finding any kind of clothing you're looking for! it's all there.

Remember, too, that he is constantly travelling world-wide, so he can find items not available anywhere here in the U.S.

Just one question, Since you (Android) are so familiar with Painter and how to use it would you ever consider making a tutorial DVD on how you personally use painter and how you navigate through it ??

Bora- thank you , that's a great point about laughter, if you like learning with laughter you need to get Coros dvds, he is one of the funniest guys i know.
i try making more jokes in part two.

cesmis, im trying to whittle my wardrobe down to 4 outfits to make my life easier , its less to think about,

gruve24 - that's a great suggestion, part two goes deeper into the power of painter, eventually i will make one that focuses more on it.

I really only have one complaint on all of massive blacks DVDs and that is the sound quality. I have my pc speakers at max and turn the volume up to max in both application and windows. And THEN I can just hear what they're saying.
There's a whole lot of noise and other stuff interfering with the sound and that gets quite annoying.

Pawfox, try opening open you volume mixer and adjusting the sound of the wave channel as well. You shouldn't be having this problem, it works great on all of my computers, using headphone or speakers.

I do agree that there is some choppy editing at some points, but it's nothing to serious, they still get the info across.

Great vid, downloaded and watched it yesterday.
I have a question and a suggestion.

Q: If I got this mad boss that gave us zbrush to play with at work "just for the fun of it" but I don't know how to model airplane-wheels proper (!), is there anywhere one could find cool obj. files to play around with in zbrush? Like a resource website? I loked and cant seem to find anything zbrush-wise appart from the pixologic space, and thats quite limited.

S: Future videos- More Painter secrits! Seriously, I am a painter no-know. So when I see interesting stuff happend in your videos I usually go !HUH!.
(the main downside I find with painter is that it isn't as intuitive to find things as with photoshop)
This time around you gave away some stuff like the way you can make workspace and growth, but a bit more for us unsavvy would be nice.

It's an interesting program, but I fear I woul like to know more. Saw this video out by corel on how to work with painterx, which was fine, but it went over very few things that goes beyond basic knowledge of "here is this brush, here is that paper".

Besides, I think Im not alone in learning better when seeing something made for completely different purpose then showing these things, and getting explained how they work and where to find them.

Such as the previous release, where you had a portrait being captured.

(Off the top of my head, the thing that irks me right now is how you make all them different boxes with gradients pop up all over the screen, seen in virtually any painting vid you made so far. Probably very easy...))

there is resource material out there to learn painter. Painter has plenty of forums available. Jeremy Sutton makes a dvd. He also write books. There is the painter wow book. Ryan church has a dvd out that teaches painter. If you go to any painter forum the lady named Jin will answer any question. the only reason i am pointing this out is because i think the massive black downloads will suffer if too much is spent on technical/basic issues.

as for those squares filled with a gradient --- try the 'gradient tool' to start :)

QUOTE: "cesmis, im trying to whittle my wardrobe down to 4 outfits to make my life easier , its less to think about,"

Sounds good. But I may have bad news for you.

Let's assume that by 4 outfits you mean 4 shirts, 4 pants, & 4 vests, and that each of the shirts are different, each of the pants are different, and each of the vests are different. From those 12 items of clothing, & assuming that you wear one of each to be an 'outfit', you actually have 64 outfits! I could even email you a list of them.

And, then of course, there's also hats, scarves, gloves, wrist guards, shoes, and other assorted items.

I had trouble downloading it but hubby finally got it downloaded on our Linux system. I sent some comments to Aaron, but thought I'd post here too.

The video is wonderful! A lot of the concepts - especially colour & shapes - are very relevant to my quilting - so are your ideas on abstraction. Design principles are design principles - & they hold true no matter what form one's creativity takes.

Just a couple of suggestions Andrew on presentation. When you talk, keep your hands away from your face & mouth. Also, when you are excited you talk really fast & tend to slur your words - I know this problem well, as I do the same thing. Face the camera more while talking - the face is so expressive, & yours is hard to see when the camera is focussed on the side of your face & not the front.

A wonderful video! And definitely worth $14 - I'd even pay more. I eagerly await "Part 2," or whatever you decide to name it.

Hi Andrew and Thanks for the reply. I have decided I should buy this one as I think on a personal level I am between experimenting and refining and still not sure where my style is going.

The further these DVD's will go in development, and the more info they release, the premium will certainly get higher. The bundles are made for a reason, so is the price, I am sure massive black have a business sense more than most posting right now; they are top in there field after all.

During the begining of the video Android uses 3D shapes already modeled by his crew and uses them in conjunction with Z-Brush to form the base model of the creature. I imagine a well designed survival horror creature would be no more or less hard to model then what ends up in his final.

As for the portraiture, If you download the Android Fine Art VOL.1, the final part of the video is him rendering a friend who was sitting for him. It's my favorite part of the whole video.

Don't forget that a huge part of understanding his work seems to be training your eye to see the value of what is almost instinctualy visually appealing. Stealing the ability we have to see animals lying in wait or spiders in our peripherary, that part of the mind that keeps us safe put to new use. Hacking the brain.

Most importanly just remember to, "Bevel, bevel, bevel!".

Hi Android,

Great video -- thanks for sharing!
Had one question though... is there a quick way to create all the patterns that you use, or do you just have to bite the bullet and create them all manually.

I'm sorry, I don't think I posed my question well.
What I meant was that if I have a thousand clip art images and I want to make patterns in Painter from them, then is there a better way then to;
* open each image,
* make a rectangular selection,
* choose capture pattern,
* name it

Is there a quicker/easier way?

This video was excellent to say the least, not only was it informative but it was funny and definitely entertaining. I especially like the parts where Andrew is trying to find just the right shape, haha. Great Stuff, I've never seen zbrush used in such ways.
