Hello fellow artists.
So I am a gamer (99% console) and I know
there are many other gamers dwelling withing
the depths of CA.Org.
So here's the question-
"What's are your top five favorite games of all time?"
My current list (From great to the greatest)-
5. Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty (November 14, 2001; Playstation 2)
~This game was awesome. The graphics were ridiculously good and
better than any other game I had seen prior to it. The physics
were very good for it's time too. I had to have played as Snake
on that oil-liner at least 80-90 times. Just trying different
techniques to kill every single guard....
Most Memorable Moment: When a cinematic opens with
Revolver Ocelot cold bloodedly putting one of his 44 Mags up to one
of the guard's heads and pulls the trigger; blood spewing from the dead
soldiers skull Hideo Kojima style, simply awesome.
4. Halo 2 (November 9, 2004; Xbox)
~Now I know as someone is reading this they are saying to
themselves, "Oh god, of course Halo had to be on there..." But I had too.
I've probably consumed more time into Halo 2 than I have any of these.
I'm a competitive guy, and Halo 2 takes competition to a whole new level
for any sport. Great graphics and physics, some of the best the Xbox
has ever seen...Multiplayer=Spectacular.
Most Memorable Moment:There's nothing more fun than to have a huge LAN party with all your buddies, ordering loads of Subway and Pizza, with a never ending supply of energy drinks, staying awake for 2 days at
a time...
3. Mortal Kombat II (1993; Super Nintendo)
~I got this game when I was 7 years old for Christmas. It was from
that moment on, when I realized how much videogames would be a
part of my life (I'm 19 now and plan on attending the San Fran Art Institute
for Game Design) So I guess it just stuck. The graphics were great, the
animations were brutal, and the sound was fantastic.
Most Memorable Moment: Learning Reptiles "Eat Your Head" Fatality.
(I still remember the button configuration to do it: Back, Back, Down, B)
2. Pokemon: Reb&Blue Version (September 29, 1998; Gameboy)
~Although the Pokemon phase came and went (tried to keep up but failed)
and I was a mere 9 years old when the Pokemon phenomenon took it's tole
and I have to admit, I was a DIRE fan. Never played the card game, just
collected religiously. I can't stand it now. Stopped worshipping it when I was
probably 11 years of age.....Right before the original 150 turned into the now
6,345,235,294 of them. When I got my first Blue Version, I don't think I came
out of my room once for a week...
Most Memorable Moment: Surfing on my level 99 Lapras on the coast of Sea Phoam Islands to find "Missing No." just to get my 99 "Rare Candies"
that were placed in the sixth slot of my inventory...HAHA, good times.
1. The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind (June 6, 2002; Xbox)
~With its immense world full of mysteries, dungeons, legendary items, and
pretty much anything you would want from a free-roaming RPG, this game
definitely wins the #1 spot with flying colors. Although it had pretty much
non-existent fighting system and by the end of your character, you've read
probably the equivalent of 5 long novels, this game is your life away from your real life. You can do pretty much anything you want, and there is virtually no limit to the game. I could type a whole book full of all its amazing features but I have no time, nor would I imagine you all wanting to read about it...
Most Memorable Moment: Coming across my very first, obsidian like "Daedric Shrine"
So there you have it, my list of the five greatest games of all time that
suited my interest to the fullest degree. :)
Whatta' bout you?

1. Shadow of the Colossus - PS2
To be honest, I can't be bothered explaining why I like this so much. Most people like it for different reasons, but it sparks something in me. It has water that scares me (deep, endless lakes), moss and lush green that I obsess over, and a story that blew me away. It relates to me and how I feel in many ways.
2. Homeworld - PC
This game has some of the creepiest levels with music to match. You Hyperspace around the galaxy, making your way towards your homeworld. Along the way, your little bundle of ships is met by massive elitist imperialist gigantic things. It got me pretty worried. Plus, I love the whole deep space with creepy emptiness. Then there's the Kadesh, who have arcitechture that I just want to live in. Really nice story too.
3. Psychonauts - PS2
I adore the art in this game. It's like a fruity Tim Burton/Nightmare Before Christmas surreal thing. I feel that it's pretty classic, and is full of ammusing mind things.
4. Zone of the Enders: The 2nd Runner.
Great art, Anubis is one of my favourite things in a game. And the challenging gameplay is a plus.
5. WipEout 3: Special Edition
Hugely expanded on the original, and I simply love flying on P-Mar Project. I wish racing games had storytelling.

Shrew11 I agree with your #1 wholeheartedly. The story of Nerevar shows up in my art from time to time. Best design and art direction in a game that I can remember. Deep story.
My most memorable moment was crossing the huge bridge coming up the the most north-western dwemer ruin and seeing the huge dwemer statue emerge from the mist. I keep thinking to myself "If only I spent that time on my art" but I have to remember that it's been a huge influence on me. I wouldn't be the same artist without it.

oh man, there's already a few threads like this but they make me all teary eyed and nostalgic so here it goes in no particular order (this list is prone to change depending on my mood):
1. Monkey Island III - this game is just eye candy, ear candy and humor candy. the singing pirate sequence is the hardest a videogame has ever made me laugh.
2. Starcraft - it's stracraft, it ate 5 years of my life, i still occasionally relapse.
3. Freespace II - Oh man, talk about awesome games, they just don't make space combat sims anymore and freespace II was the best you could get back in the day. This game made me fall in love with drawing spaceships so it will always be dear to my heart. Better yet, it's now abandonware and still has an active community with mods for graphical upgrades, new campaigns and more. Google it, download it, break out an old joystick and know the pinnacle of an all but dead gaming genre.
4. Systemshock II - If you liked bioshock this game is a must play, much harder, much scarier, also abandonware.
5. X-Com UFO Defense - Brutally hard turn based tactical shooter but so much more. Includes RPG and 4x strategy elements, I have never been able to beat it without cheating mercilessly but that dosn't stop me from coming back for more. Also abandonware.
man, 3 out of 5 are abandonware and i remember them new... i feel so old

Yeah see what you mean in every way Jason.
Bethesda is truly a team of miracles and intelligence.
Makes you sort of wish you were in that world
sometimes realistically; scary when a game is that
good. Oblivion was a lot worse I must say, although
the graphics were STUNNING and the fighting system was
deeply modified, and not to mention everything else that
was next-gened too, but it focused to much on the video game
side of the hill this time. It lost it's "reality sense" when I furthered
myself in the game. I beat the game and I was satisfied. Morrowind
had me so immersed into it's world that I never actually complete'd
the story line (couldn't anyway because I went to far into the game
and I screwed it up, hehe).
Anyway I'm one of those Medieval type people (I can't wait to go to
Scottland one of these days; Castles!!! :D) and Morrowind fullfills that
need to the max. Great game...

1. Deus Ex
Memorable moment: My brother is dying and there's nothing I can do. The MIB are coming...RUN JC! CRASH...*I jump out onto a fire escape as the sounds of gunfire chase after me*
2. Freespace 2 (yeah, it's sad this genre is dead)
Memorable moment: "...that is one big ship."
3. Half Life 2
Memorable moment: Goddamn helicopter water chase sequence! JEsus christ a dam! WEEEeEEEEHAAAAAA!!!
4. Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind
Memorable moment: The first time it rained and Jeremy Soule's like "mmmmHMMMmmmmm".
5. Baldur's Gate
Memorable moment: The entire thing. Can you say "immersion"? Ok...whenever I fought sword spiders...*shudder*

I have too many to put into 5, but Ill try
5th: World Of Warcraft: Player interaction and exploring is amazing to me about this game.
Memorable moment: The first time I fought Onyxia. I had "Furious Angels" from the matrix Reloaded soundtrack playing. It was nuts.
4th: Soul Calibur 2 and 3: One of the only games I actually kick ass at. No one can beat me as Cervantes, and no I'm not a button masher.
Memorable moment: Fighting my loud mouthed friend, Shoving both swords into his stomach, lifting him up off the ground, and whipping him off the side with full health.
3rd: F.E.A.R.: The last 20 minutes of this game....
Memorable moment: THE LAST *$%&($ 20 MINUTES OF THIS GAME.....
2nd: Chrono Cross: Amazing music, amazing gameplay, amazing story and truly memorable characters.
Memorable moment: ((SPOILER)) The fight with miguel in front of the bell tower at dusk.... holy crap.... that was probably the clincher for my decision to be an artist... O_o.
1st: Tie
Dungeon Siege and Warcraft 3.
Dungeon Siege is a game I keep going back to. I could sit my character at the meren coast for hours and just watch whats going on in the game.... It might sound stupid but it really affected me. Music again, and also just the feel of playing it alone with one character was theraputic. Beautiful game... Timeless too.
Warcraft 3 is THE game I keep going back to. If i get bored or beat a current game, I play Warcraft 3. The solo campaign isnt that great, but the endless possibilities of map creation and online play is crazy. Theres always something new when I pop on Bnet.
So yeah. Thats leaving out a crap load of good games....
Honorable Mentions: Silent Hills, except for 4. Resident Evil 4, Quest 64, Super Metroid, Revelations for Gameboy, Half Life 2, Final Fantasy X... Ok I gotta stop now, but yeah.

1. Silent Hill 2 - Totally absorbing Lynch -esque storyline, loved the art - atmospheres, figures, enviros, critters - love this game.
2. Okami - gorgeous, gorgeous game. cute and sweet without being cloying or dull.
3. Psychonauts - quirky visuals, wild storyline, wonderfully warped humor.
4. Armed and Dangerous - great character design, and FUNNY. To me, the actual gameplay gets old kinda fast, but where else can you throw exploding penguins or launch a land shark?
5. MYST - all except Urhu(or however you spell the last, 3rd person one). Incredible visuals, storyline that you sorta piece together yourself, and compelling, logical puzzles.

I grew up a Commodore kid, and I'm still of the opinion that some of the best and most imaginative games came out back in those days, when you couldn't just repackage the same formula with slicker FX and more sex and gore and call it good. That said...
My Personal Top 5 Fave Games of All Time
1 - Adventure Construction Set (C64) - This game allowed you to create RPG-style games, complete with custom graphics, "special effects," quests, etc. It could even, given about an hour and a blank disk, generate a game for you to play. I have never seen its like reproduced in the modern gaming era, which is a shame, as it lent itself to some highly imaginative and kick-arse designs. I loved this game to death - two copies' worth, at least. (Our house had a strange effect of screwing up floppy disks... no one else I know of had as much trouble keeping a game running as we did.)
2 - Myst (PC) - Because it was such a cool concept, to wander at leisure, navigate intuitively, and solve puzzles with brains rather than level-up firepower.
3 - Arcanum (PC) - My favorite RPG of all time, hands-down. Steampunk and sorcery, and one of the most adaptive gameplay systems I've ever seen. You could play good or evil, violent or passive (it was possible, supposedly, to win without ever actually killing anyone or anything), and it's the only game I ever played where you could actually talk the bad guy into surrendering his own life if you played your points right. Unfortunately, the warez guys and internal factors prevented an Arcanum II.
4 - Black & White (PC) - The fourth world or so was impossibly frustrating to play (when you come back to the first world and are being bombarded by fireballs and whatnot), but I still consider B&W to be one of the best and most unique games I've ever played, with the coolest control system.
5 - Mail Order Monsters (C64) - Another EA classic (IMHO), you built monsters from about 16 basic "morphs," paying for boosted stats and extras such as scales, photosynthesis, gills, fangs, etc., armed them, and sent them out into the field, competing on various terrains against either a computer simulated opponent, another live person (on the other joystick port), or "the horde," a computer-generated bevvy of baddies. There was also a capture-the-flag game, and you had the option to surrender before death (with reduced points awarded.) Using the points, you could go back and upgrade your morph, or create a new one to add to your stable. Not only have modern "make-a-monster" games forgotten the two-against-a-common-foe or capture-the-flag type competitions that made MOM so much fun, but I've never seen one with the range of morphs available as I did in MOM. In addition to humans and saurians, for instance, there was a mobile tree and an amoeba. My sister and I lost many, many hours playing this, and I still miss it from time to time.
Honorable Mentions: Movie Monsters for C64 [you played as various movie monsters such as Godzilla or the Marshmallow Man, each with skills and weaknesses) competing to destroy a city, escape, find a specific target, rescue your offspring, or just enjoy lunch], Beyond the Forbidden Forest for C64 (a classic hunt-the-monster game), the Windham Classics storybook adaptations for C64 (particularly Alice in Wonderland, Below the Root, and The Wizard of Oz), Ultimate Wizard for C64 (as a wizard seeking personal glory and fortune, you enter the Dark Lord's many dungeons with many traps, and could build your own on the side), Demon Stalkers for C64 (100 levels down to the granddaddy demon, plus a construction set; it counts as the only game I never finished because I just got too nervous on that last level), Lighthouse for PC (a Myst-type knockoff with some very imaginative situations and multiple problem-solving options, which affected gameplay), Pharaoh/Cleopatra for PC (I've lost too many hours screwing up Egypt in this city-building game...) The Sims & The Sims 2 for PC (obvious,) and many others I can't think of off the top of my head. Yes, I've spent far too much time in front of various computers, haven't I?

I review for PC Format South Africa. :) But I'm pretty much a retro gamer. My editor has just agreed to give me a half page a month for a retro review.
I love so many old games, particularly from the 90's before gaming hit a bit of a slump. I think I will just list my top 3 RPGs.
Elvira 2: Jaws of Cerberus
The ultimate in horror gaming. A 1st person perspective point and click RPG/Adventure. You must find Elvira in a movie studio that has come to life. Photo realistic graphics for certain scenes and some amazingly detailed and gory deaths. (Throat bitten out, burned alive, torn to pieces, face melted off...)
Some very adult moments. It had an 18 rating and I think they would battle to release it these days. Sex, nudity and satanism. I had this game since I was 9 and only finished it last year...
Ultima VII
Origin was never able to top this one. In fact, it was all downhill afterwards. (Mainly due to a buy-out from EA.) Every NPC has his or her own portrait, schedule and social life. They attend church, drink in the tavern, commit adultery. Dealt with some interesting issues as well, charismatic cult brainwashing, serial killing, drug abuse...the freedom of movement was limitless. Only Oblivion has come close to matching many of the aspects in Ultima.
Baldurs Gate 2
I still replay this constantly. Hands down some of the best voice acting I have ever heard. I remember how disappointed I was with NWN after playing Baldurs. Again you have lots of freedom to act according to your own feelings, lots of customisable features is always a must in any RPG and the Baldurs series still has a large online following that creates mods and soundsets. The interactions between your party members still makes me laugh, especially anything to do with Korgan.
Thanks for reading!

Some interesting choices guys, might have to pick up a few. :)
I love the old school, so sue me.
1) Deus Ex : Its funny, cause this games first level made me honestly think it was just another one of those boring shooters with no story and no game play. My friend kept telling me it gets so much better but I was quite adamant the game was poo, that is until the 4th try at it and getting past the 1st level. Ooooh yeah!!, one of the biggest surprises for me in any game whatsoever! Some of the best twists and turns in a game ive played too.
Fav moment? Finding out its much much more than a FPS!
2)Fallout 2 : Another one that takes some getting used to, to fully appreciate and enjoy. Sharing similarities with Deus Ex in that kind of way, pain in the ass to figure out, but once you have its more addicting than snorting coke off a hookers breast.
Fav moment? Probably the ending, when you get to see how your actions have effected every city in the game. :D
3) Knights Of The Old Republic 1 : Took the Star Wars franchise to an RPG genre...my dream come true! :) Cinematic gameplay and excellent diologue choices. Also, playing as an evil jedi surprised the shit out of me, in terms of how the characters storys change compared to playing a good jedi.
Fav moment? Ordering the wookie (forgot his name) to kill his best friend (forgot her name). Pure evil! Mwahahahah!
*shit gotta go, ill update it later!* :D

Let's see....there are so many.
Well, I am old, so I will include some oldies that really made an impression on me.
Zork and Enchanter Series - Sure, they were text-only, but the storytelling was mesmerizing. Kids nowdays don't get it.
Sid Meier's Pirates - A classic. The remake was pretty good, too.
Freespace 2 - Best space sim ever.
World of Warcraft - While I argue that it is not the best RP game
(Everquest takes the prize), the art department is excellent. And it is fun, too!
Diablo 1 & 2 - Yeah....fun! (c'mon, Blizzard, where's Diablo online??)
I could think of many, many more, but those will do for now.

I'm also mostly retro gamer. I started playing games on commodore 64. Later I had amiga 1200 and now PC.
1 - Perihelion: the Prophecy - old amiga cRPG in a style of Dungeon Master (walking through labiryth-like environment) but set in dark future alternative world. The game isn't very intuitive when it comes to interface and it has very linear plot but it's art, music and text description was combined together in such a way that as a whole it was amazing game experience. The world feels more alive to me than many today's realistic games.
2 - Thief: the Dark Project - I love the concept of this game. First person game which is all about waiting for the right moment to sneak behind back of some guards or hiding in shadows. Thief gave whole new meaning to sound in game which was as important as graphics. I could accurately spot someone walking nearby just by listening to footsteps. One memorable moment was when suddenly I heard zombie's loud breath behind my back and it gave me chills for a second :D. The graphics are simple but very moody. I especially liked the Lost City level which was all about underground and lava streams.
3 - Ufo: Enemy unkown (or Xcom Ufo Defense) - The game has really simple turn based combat mechanics but it allows for infinite number of different combat situations. There could be combat in forest, desert, jungle, arctic terrain, rural areas and cities both during night and day. Every single level tile could be destroyed together with whole buildings which made the game more complicated. I only wish there was even more equipment and that the characters weren't anonymous.
4 - Deus Ex - While playing this game I had many memorable moments. I liked the idea I can go through the whole location in any way I want. Everything about the story was so well done that I almost felt like being main character in some book or movie.
5 - Carmageddon 2 - I had problem choosing the right game for this place. Carmageddon 2 was fun beacause I the car physics allowed for many different stunts, sometimes very ridiculous. I usually had more fun by destroying other cars than being the first one on finish line.
Other games - Mortal Kombat I & II, Frontier: Elite II, Rainbow Six: Rogue Spear, Gunship 2000, Jedi Knight series, Colin McRae Rally 2, Homeworld 2

#5) Starcraft
A 1995 game that is still loved around the world today. The three factions are all so unique and balanced. RTS perfection.
Best moment, the noble sacrifice of Tassadar.
#4)Turok 1 and 2
This was the first shooter game I ever saw played. And it got me hooked. For being on such a primitive system, both games did great things. If you have an N-64 you must play these games.
Best moment, being seven years old and seeing blood spray out of a mans neck like a crimson fountain. Beauty.
#3)The Call of Duty series
Being a WW2 buff, nothing got closer than call of duty. I think it does justice to the greatest generation. Its a hell of a lot of fun too.
"what the hell kind of a name is "soap" anyway?"
#2) Mass Effect
There has never been a more story oriented game. I say its number two because this is what I see in the future of gaming. Mass Effect is the first in what I see as a movie replacing medium.
There is no greater feeling than becoming a renegade specter. The power, the ability, the lack of moral fiber. Pure gold.
#1) Halo trilogy
I love halo, but not just because of near perfection in every aspect. The story is amazing, the music inspiring, so on and so forth. This game is what really introduced me to the power videogames really have.
"Its over, halo, its finished."
"no, I think we are just getting started"

Most of the games I like is because of some twisted form of nostalgia, and childhood innocence of killing monsters infront of teh tv!
My first top three, are
Legend of Legia-its one of those games were the theme song sparks countless chidhood memories full of ra-shew and imagination. Looking back, I still like it.
Legend of Zelda: orcarina of time-COME ON! who DOESN'T have this game piled up on a drawer some were compleate with loads of Link posters, and merch! I was a compleatley hopeless LOZ fan back in the day! Besides, all us left handed guys have to have our own superhero! No game sparked my imagination like that game did. Playing that game was when I first started to question the possibility of me being a game designer.
Phantasy Star Online, for gamecube -online- Ok, this game has to get an honerary mention on this list. First there was zelda that broadend my personal ideas on the depth of a game, and then PSO came around and I got a chanse to explore how that process involved groups of people! Plus I was compleatley nerded out over online play ya know! Sure, the game isn't the best, but I enjoyed it, back in the day.
Metal Gear Solid Twin Snakes- lower on my list, but don't let that fool you, this is one game that I highley reguard as one of the best made. I didn't get a chanse to play the origional version becaouse of my age at the time, but when I got my hands on the remake I played it about 7 times through in two weeks! This game challanged my perspectives of what a game was really capiable of! Hideo was useing ideas, and concepts, turning them into things, and it was trueley an amazeing game to me. Becuse it was the first game that I played were I was utterley convinced that a game could be more than "good" polys, and bitmaps, and be something much, much more!
I can't actually think of a 5th....

Don't wanna put them in any order :(
Halo Trilogy (even though I think that the #1 hit me the hardest as I was only 11 or 12 when I first played it. Actually never played the whole campaign of Halo 3, yet.).
Starcraft (Classic)
Battlefield 2 (Best MMOFPS, imo)
Diablo II (well, it's great).
Heroes of Might and Magic III. (Great fun to multiplay with your friends)
Might and Magic VII (Really cool game)

#5 - Arcanum - I do believe that it has been stated as to why this game just oozes goodness.
#4 - Fallout 1/2 - I love Fallout. They demented humor, the way that little bits of random crap would happen. Monty Python? Mmm, good times those. Post Apocalyptic settings have always held my attention and this is the best there is.
#3 - Ninja Gaiden (Xbox) - Talk about gory and beautiful. The smoothness that this game had was incredible, not to mention that you could get the old games in it as well.
#2 - Morrowind - 500+ hrs on the console version and so much more making mods in the Tes construction set.
#1 - TRIBES - tribes will always be the game that I remember. It's social scene and friggin 60+ multi player levels will always be with me. This is the only game that I can think of that I have put more than 1000 hours into. The mods were the best part of it, as they all were based on the same items in the game, so no downloading required. One of these days I'll go back to it. Jet packs man, Jet packs. thats whats its all about. I think its a free dl too.

1)Half-Life 2
Completely blew me away and changed how I look at games. Fantastic story. Makes the classic FPS game play feel new again. Innovation in rendering and physics. Made cut scenes obsolete. And it done all this without one bit of dialog from the main character.
2)God of War series
Pushing the PS2 to the max. The level design and environments can not be matched. The game play is broken up enough so the button mashing doesn't get old. The story is an instant classic that could easily fit in with the epic poems of ancient Greece.
3)Metal Arms: Glitch In the System
Perhaps one of the most underrated games in console history. A truely fun game. Wide variety of enemies. The levels are open ended so you can play them in different ways, from stealth, to guns blazing. Original art direction. Game play never gets old, even with repeated play. Pretty much a flawless execution of a game. However, it came out when some more popular titles hit the stores so it never got the attention it deserved.
4)Kingdom Hearts Series
I love this game for three reasons, nostalgia, story, and art direction. Being able to walk around the worlds from the Disney movies I seen as a child is great. The story is complex, and pulls you in. Theres an innocence that the main character keeps throughout the series that most developers would chuck out after the first installment. I really enjoyed the environments. Some of them are very whimsical and the use of shapes, and color are just great. Theres also a lot of neat tricks used, that any environment artist or level designer should have up their sleeve.
5)Super Mario 64
The last great Mario game. Its a nicely designed game that captures everything great from the SNES and puts it into 3D.

With no particular order, love them all :P
-Warcraft 3 (+frozen throne) :
I wasnt really big into pc strategy before this game but once i played it for the first time i fell in love with it, this game had it all, it was just fun as hell. Fridays afternoon me and a bunch of friends from higschool gathered and played it in teams at a cyber near our school, it was war!. :D
-Zelda:the ocarina of time: I played it as soon as it came out, loved it, i was like 8 or 9 years old and got it for Christmas, every time i listen to the woods song it brings back childhood like nothing else.
Mortal Kombat 3
I remember getting this game landed years ago,the hardest mk in my opinion. I could never beat the stupid final guy :(.
Diablo 1 and 2
Awesome games back then, is hard to found a game it the same genre that has the same appeal.
Resident evil 2 Another from my childhood, it was sorta scary back then, i won it a bunch of times, loved the puzzles. Not my favorite style today but fun memories.

I think HL2 is probably the best game I've ever played.
Others that have meant a lot to me are (in no particular order):
Jazz Jackrabbit 2
Quake 1
Unreal Tournament (the original and 2k4)
Worms Armageddon
AvP (Gold)
Balls of Steel
Fallout 1 and 2
Starcraft (even though I SUCK at it and always lose. Great game - hate playing it)
Rainbow Six Vegas
The complete Orange Box

top three for me, no perticular order:
half life 2 + episodes + portal: game design does not get more professional than this.
shadow of the colossus: amazing story, even though barely anything is said.

5. Medieval II Total War - Knights, kings, assassins, crusaders, mongols, saracens, world domination and the Pope. For all its flaws, its one of my favorite strategy games. Put it on high settings with a decent graphics card - you'll feel like you're in a Ridley Scott film. Fun moments for everyone are different, but mine was when I wiped out the vatican states and effectively exiled his holiness to Russia.
4. Planescape Torment - Mind blowing plot, excellent range of dialogue options, and I'm really fond of the strange setting. The philosophy elements were really deep for a game, and it left you thinking a lot about duality and consequence. I really liked the ending, but I won't spoil it for you guys who haven't played it yet.
3. Fallout 2 - Another great RPG, if you have to ask, you haven't played it. Defining moment? When farmer whatshisname dies from a heart attack when you tell him how you sold his daughter to slavers, or when you rail the american president with a gauss rifle. Or perhaps - the lesbian sex.
2. TES3 Morrowind - It wasn't just a game, it was an experience. Oblivion just didn't feel the same, Morrowind was a game with soul. I didn't even play it before until a year ago, after being nagged constantly by friends, and it must have been the first time they made a good recommendation. Loved the design aspects of the game too, like the ordinators. Damned imposing. Glad to see you like it too Shrew, the freedom in the game made GTA look linear.
1. Tough one, but I think half life 2 gave me one of the biggest "Wow" moments in a video game, when you first step out of the train station into Orwellian eastern europe. As artists, I'm sure a lot of you also appreciate the art direction that I felt was realised very well in the game. As for the gameplay - well, don't even get me started on the grabbity-gun.

5: GTA-San Andreas
while not the best game graphicwise or storywise, I like it for one simple reason. I can go anywhere with the jetpack, kill anything with duel sawnoff shotguns, and destroy lots of things.
4: Castlevania -SOTN
Just a natually good game in most aspects.
3: Megaman series
I just love the megaman series. Dont know why, but I do.
2: Mortal Kombat/Tekken
These two have a tie for being both awesomely good fighting games with lots of depth and story, and kickass moves for each character. Johnny Cage and King are my characters on those games, and I will kick anyones ass with those two.
1: Channel 192 presents: Auto Wars
Well, I gotta give top tier to the game im making in my spare time. Vehicular combat in its best form.

Farsh you hit the nail right on the head when you said
Morrowind is an experience. Oblivion was more of just a videogame, yet
I loved everymoment of that game too...Cheydinnal was
by far one of the greatest settings visually in a videogame
to date.
And as for Digital, I actually had Mega Man in my head when I
thought about this list. But only the Nintendo versions. Back to
the sleek "rectangle" controller with the two buttons, yeah! :D
That series was like Castlevania in "Whoville".....
I remember the Red Drill-Boss the most for some reason.
And as for MKII, I used Scorpion or Raiden.....
I can still hear Raiden's:back, back, forward,"EHDEH'OBEYGAAAAHHHHHH!!!"

ACK!! Scorpion bad! I think I am the only person around who absolutely HATES scorpion. It might be that he gets all the attention, and is concidered a badass, even though he dies in every single MK almost, or atleast gets defeated. Even Cage beat him in the movie. But yeah, Raidens alright. And yeah, only the NES Megaman's were really any good. After that, they lost it big time. It didnt have the feel of the originals anymore. Red drill man....Crashman?

5. Goldeneye 64- As far as I personally am concerned, this is the best FPS shooter ever made. Halo is great, don't get me wrong, but Goldeneye was the first.
4. Bomberman (Sega Saturn)- The best most intense party game of all time.
3. Super Mario 64- Revolutionized gaming, basically.
2. Chrono Trigger- Best RPG of all time.
1. Shadow of the Colossus- if you've played this game, you'll understand. I've never had a gaming experience like that.

Well back when MKII was brand new, I was only 7 years old and had
only played it once before. Scorpion just happen to fit my likeings a lot
more than any other character. So I'm glad to say I haven't followed the
Band-wagon; Oh and only a true Scorpion fan hates Sub-Zero, and I
have a passion for hating the icy ninja. All through out childhood I drew
Scorpion and made up my own fatalities. I hate the fact that he's all
mainstream too.
Wolverine(X-Men) is not my favorite character anymore, due to this same exact
reason.... :(
As for Megaman, I have no idea what his name was or anything, I just
remember some guy with drills as his arms or something, and he was red...

Stupid art stole my gaming addiction.
All time favs? None. But I can tell you at the top of my head which I can remeber (which usually are the best or the ones I loathed the most).
Final Fantasy 8, 10 (played most worth playing)
Star Wars Gaaxies. My first MMO, possibly the worst but hey I said it might be what I loathe.
Call of Duty 1, 2, 4. Hours of playtime
GTA 3, VC, SA
Anything else I am either too sleepy or i have played too many to recall.

#4)Turok 1 and 2
and seeing blood spray out of a mans neck like a crimson fountain. Beauty.
That's beautiful? I mean, 'awesome', sure, okay. But beautiful!? WTF.
#3)The Call of Duty series
Being a WW2 buff, nothing got closer than call of duty. I think it does justice to the greatest generation.
What is the greatest generation?
#2) Mass Effect
There has never been a more story oriented game.
Please explain it, in a single sentence summary.
#1) Halo trilogy
I love halo, but not just because of near perfection in every aspect. The story is amazing, the music inspiring, so on and so forth. This game is what really introduced me to the power videogames really have.
"Its over, halo, its finished."
"no, I think we are just getting started"
Oh man. Please, for the love of [insert something here], tell me that's sarcasm. Or you're joking or something.
Near perfection in every aspect - when I saw this, I instantly wanted to rant about the lack of depth in the story, only to see you praising it. Then you say the music (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DLFDzC_ok8c) is inspiring? Please spend some time with this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R3PRXFLJYcw) and this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rNVCD1dsnJI&feature=related). I don't know, maybe Halo inspires you and the music and story of those games doesn't. Everyone's different. But maybe it's the hymn that you like. If that's the case, you may like Homeworld (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OIUxwEJ-GXI). Or Devil May Cry 3 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oK-tnIjYoM4)
This link (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kvanJYOGlus) tells me Halo 3 is the most anticipated game in history. If the most anticipated game in history is a brightly coloured glossy bloom shooter with the depth of a window, then the world must be filled with truly hollow people. I know this is an opinion of mine, and that many of you are happy with empty something, but I object to it being called deep. That's all, nothing against you, I just don't think it can be called deep or meaningful by anyone with a straight face.

Wow, lots of emotion in that post.
Turok, in regard to the blood, it seemed like a work of art, something interesting and very new. In its own way, I do see beatuy in such an event
(maybe not the poor chap who got capped, but the features and motions of blood and liquid in general)
The greatest generation is often used to describe the heroic men and women who gave their lives in the defence of freedom from the oppression of the Nazi regime. I stand by that title.
I have never been more pulled into a story than I have when playing Mass Effect. I felt there, connected. When your forced to sacrifice a member of your squad, its the most powerful effect I have felt whlie playing a game. Sorry its not a sentence.
Im fine with seperate opinions, just dont shove hate, especially with regard to someone elses opinion.
Halo is a tremendous series. The records its smashed, I do give credit to Halo with really helping videogames break into mainstream entertainment. I find the music very inspiring, very effective. Its perfect for what is being done in the game and the settings. Halo isnt the best looking game out there, but it is stylized, meant to look that way. Yes halo is deep, but only for those who look at it the right way. I have read the books, five in all, and four of the five have been very well written. When collectivly looked at, the halo series does indeed tell a fantastic story, such themes like betrayel, redemtion, duty, honor, purpose and mystery are all very prevelent. Halo has done great things for videogames in general, Dislike it, fine, there is no rational reason to hate it.

February 28th, 2008, 09:53 AM
YAY! Finally who shows hatred towards Halo as well! I always thought it was a metroid ripoff with Master Chief, a male version of Samus Aran in essence, without even so much as a name. You run around, and get this, shoot aliens on another planet. Oh my fucking god that is so unique. And it has plot twists, unlike any other game apparently. Cant have anything similar to Goldeneye, Duke Nukem, or even Doom.....oh wait, it does. :anime: And what the hell? Video games were in the mainstream WAY before Halo. You have the Nintendo, which brought out the gamers more then Atari ever did, then you started seeing 2 player games, which brought us out even more in arcades and in homes. Then, you got things like GTA and Mortal Kombat, which have shitloads of advertising and a huge following, which brought the gamers out even more. So yeah, maybe Halo brought them out by a step, but games before brought gamers out like a mouse to cheese.
Yeah, I think it is rational to hate it, when there are so many better games out there that people wont show the same amount of respect to, because its not Halo.
And yeah, I havent played Mass Effect yet but in other games, I use to kill my teammates for fun. Why? Because they were there, and got in the way most of the time. So fuck them, they will die!

February 28th, 2008, 10:46 AM
When I say mainstream, I mean similar in status to movies. Everybody goes to movies, and, until recently, videogames were relegated to the basement of nerd's houses (as far as greater society was concered EX: mainstream media). Now, with innovations and improvments, videogames are being seen as a valid way to entertain one's self and your friends.
And if you want to talk about originality, then every game has plagerized another to some extent. Its not about originality anymore, its innovation and refining the experience. The wii took the next step with its nunchuck and motion sensors, but the games are not really original, they are just party games. The next step will be 3-D.
In addition, you hate Halo for the fact that people disrespect other games because they are not halo? Then you should be mad at that person, give them a list of games that you would recommend, and let them have their own damn opinion. It seems strange to me to hate a game because of what other people think about it.
I think you should play Mass Effect before leveling too harsh a judgment. Its critically acclaimed.

February 28th, 2008, 11:14 AM
No, that is not the only reason I hate it, though it is a big one, for I see alot of people comparing other games to Halo, and if its not up to its "standards" then they wont even play it. But yes, while every game does plagiarize, im saying Halo does it more then others, yet people still think its the epitome of originality and beauty.
And games have been in the major part of the mainstream for a long time, once again way before Halo.
As for Mass Effect, I do want to play it, im just saying killing people in games is fun :P

Alright since the topic suddenly became "lets bash Halo": For those of us who grew up with Marathon, (another great game that slipped my mind completely...) Halo was like a godsend. It basically was Marathon with an albeit somewhat cheesy story and odd graphics at the time, (especially when marathon was such a dark themed game) but the music, some gameplay elements and locations (visually), and parts of the story were directly related, since it was still bungie. I Played through the series once, and thats enough for me, but the book of art and the soundtrack will always be reread/played over and over because of how genuinely powerful they are.

Dungeon Keeper

Heroes of Might and Magic II and III ("ah-ah! we'll get in the middle of the map in 4 months and i'll show ya!"...those were nice times)
Carmageddon

Mortal Kombat III
Worms II and Armageddon

I wanted to buy the 5th but i remember how long it was, i dont think i can afford so many hours playing in the pc anymore :(
Come on guys, cut halo some slack, i played the first 2 and they were okay, is true that they are way overrated but they are not THAT terrible, was kinda fun, and is worth it for halo 3, that one did came out really well, at least for the brief bit i tried, i though Bungie did an awesome job with the third.

To the fellows who aren't into Halo, I don't want
to continue the arguement, I just wanted to state
my opinion on it.
Halo has an amazing story. It's VERY different and
unique, and is actually somewhat realistic (I know that sounds stupid)
But I too, have read some of the books, and how it
all got started actually seems achievable with today's
rapidly evolving society. You do have to have an open mind
to think that, but it to me is possible (Now when I say that I mean
the SPARTAN II project, not the forerunners or covenant; although
they could be real too I guess, there are things out there we just
don't understand) Anyway the music has won tons of awards and
Halo 3 broke every media record to date, beating out Harry Potters: Deathly
Hallows and SpiderMan 3 (who used to hold the records)
Halo isn't about graphics. There's many "clicks" among the Halo society
and those are:
1. MLG players- (I'm in this one) who play the game soley for the competition and money involved. (We actually have made it to ESPN now YAAY!!)
2. Campaign Buffs-Who love the story, gameplay, and music (Me and Duman's cup of tea)
3. Online Social Players-Consists of people who play social games, and to me, are identical to the staff of Bungie. (Any MLG'rs in here will understand)
4. People who hate the franchise period and try to look for its every flaw because the game is so hyped up about and gets so much attention...
...hehe :), sorry, I just had to state my opinion.
Proceed with the list's please and thank you to all who have submitted their's.

Duman, I'm sorry if I offended you in my last post. I tried to cut out as much of the hate as possible, but in the end I still dislike mainstream overhyped-with-cream-and-rasberry-chocolate games with PASSION. I can imagine losing comrades seems like a meaningful thing to you, and I respect that. The movie Fearless made me cry so hard due to its focus on honour. Some other people just wouldn't understand this. Different things have different meanings to different people.
However, I still object to Halo having anything in it other than gameplay, which is all about multiplayer and that's something I don't give a flaming curtain about. Betrayl and massive plottwists appeal to me too; I love it when a story blows my mind or breaks my heart or something, it's less dull that way. For this, Shadow of the Colossus and Metal Gear Solid sir.
Now, with innovations and improvments, videogames are being seen as a valid way to entertain one's self and your friends.
That sounds more like Nintendo's demographic to me. Which is pretty ironic considering their advertisements generally centre around lone gamers in dark rooms playing Metroid.
And if you want to talk about originality, then every game has plagerized another to some extent.
Has spent too much time with Halo. This review (http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/editorials/zeropunctuation/1368-Zero-Punctuation-Psychonauts) tells you again. This review (http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/editorials/zeropunctuation/2304-Zero-Punctuation-Halo-3) tells you once more. And just to sum it up, here's a nice list of nice unique games with nice unique innovation:
ICO
Shadow of the Colossus
Silent Hill 2
Psychonauts
Metal Gear Solid
Zone of the Enders
Wipeout
Homeworld
Half-Life
Its not about originality anymore, its innovation and refining the experience.
With the exception of those developers with rare, creative brains who can offer something that's worth some response other than the forceful smack of a metal pipe.
The wii took the next step with its nunchuck and motion sensors, but the games are not really original, they are just party games. The next step will be 3-D.
Too true. You hit the nail on the head here. Same with Halo though, it's a party game for testosterone frap boys who enjoy a good bit of beer, girls and multiplayer at 3am. But of course there's exceptions and I'm not saying you fall into this category.
In addition, you hate Halo for the fact that people disrespect other games because they are not halo? It seems strange to me to hate a game because of what other people think about it.
Except that when I hear raving hype over (metaphorically) an empty box, I get suspicious and sick of it. It reminds me of all the jocks and valley girls getting hyped up over some meaningless superbowl thing.
I think you should play Mass Effect before leveling too harsh a judgment. Its critically acclaimed.
Just like Halo and Mario and Zelda and Final Fantasy and Need for Speed and God of War and God of War 2 and Gears of War and Gears of War 2 and World of Warcraft and Call of Duty and hundreds of other games I'm missing.
Despite these opinions of mine, I wouldn't mind playing through Mass Effect. I also wouldn't mind sitting down for a few hours to play some Halo 2 or something. I actually would like to play through the singleplayer. Maybe I should rent an Xbox.
Alright since the topic suddenly became "lets bash Halo":
I'm sorry that happened, I just felt disturbed at something like that being called what it was. Plus, how interesting is this thread otherwise? You post up your list, then leave. I don't know about others, but I can't manage to sit here, reading what kinds of games other people love, without a feeling of DUR. At least now this thread is intense and fiery.
I realize that while I like my underground, original, artsy games, you guys like Halo and shooting things. Each to their own, we're both happy with what we have. Interestingly, this is how all of my arguements end - with an open mind.

Plus, how interesting is this thread otherwise? You post up your list, then leave.
Seemed to me like the thread was a way to find things in common with people in this forum.
You must have missed the part I said about Marathon. If you want originality and underground, find that game, play it, and realize when it first came out. Then take into consideration where halo's roots are from that point.
The ONLY reason Halo became "mainstream" was because Microsoft made it that way so that it would shine as a launch game for their system. Its still Bungie, it just got pushed because it had a corporate giant behind it.
Not every thread on CA has to be centered around an argument...
But anyway, back to favorite games!

now granted.. i played most of these when i was in my early to mid teens, which is a very emotionally sensitive time. everything just seems so much deeper and genuine during that time of your life.. so anyway.. you might be able to chalk these up to nostalgia. chrono trigger was my first rpg that i ever played through and beat. i still think it's the best square has ever accomplished. and super metroid is pure 2d platforming perfection. you can't say anything bad about it ( other than it's outdated ). xenogears has the most complex story without becoming convoluted i've ever experienced. fft is a just a personal favorite. and half-life 2 because.. i dunno.. it's just very different and visceral. the sound effects and the cinematic pacing is just great.

I fucking loved that game! i didn't think anyone else had ever played it...
mine had a crashbug though so i couldn't get right through it :(
the bit at the start where the body falls out of the cupboard made me scream like a girl!
A kindred spirit! This is the first time I've ever met someone else on a forum who has also played it. Don't you agree that more people should have played this? It was very understated.
Sorry to hear about the bug, where did it occur?
I'm really glad to have met someone else who also loved it.

Absolutely, and it was originally going to be on Mac. :(
Didn't it take some inspiration from Ringworld as well?

1.) Chrono Trigger
2.) Toejam and Earl (Best multi-player middle school slumber party game EVER).
3.) Legend of the Mystical Ninja (you can DL this for your virtual console on your Wii, don't miss out. Srsly.)
4.) Sonic CD (I must have watched the animated intro (http://youtube.com/watch?v=ywAKBXuY5P4) to that game a billion times, it really kindled my interest in animation when I was 13)
5.) Okami *swoon*
I probably should have included at least one Zelda game but I have trouble ranking them. Unlike 99% of the world, I HATED Ocarina of Time with it's amazingly empty playing fields and big ugly polygons. I am a bit of a purist and would say A Link to the Past is my top Zelda game (overhead view and sprites, kthx) but I just got through Twilight Princess and my jaw is still partly dropped from the character design in that game. I wanna be Imp Midna when I grow up.

5-Overlord
Evil Pikmen.
4-Kingdom Hearts series
I honestly didn't expect it to be that much fun with disney worlds and characters.
3-Elder Scrolls 4 and Fable (tie)
Both let me change my hero by how I wanted to play. Art and design was also awesome in both.
2-Halo series
It's Halo.
1-Legend of Zelda series
I grew up with this series, it's never gotten old for me.

Holy hell I thought I was the only one who liked that game. Everyone else I know hates that game with a passion.

Wow, that game really brings back a lot of nostalgia, it was so fun back in those days.
Well it is so hard to come up with such a small list so here it goes:
Winning Eleven series - Just the way gamers spend weekend nights, drinking cold ones and playing Halo, this game is like that with my hometown friends. Addictive, competitive and one of the most realistic simulations of this sport. You can guess that we are a soccer/futbol tribe :P
Guilty Gear series- Awesome original characters with kickass metal music, a crazy and fast gameplay fitting for a 2d fighting game. The latest GG XX accent core is the best of all.
Final Fantasy VI - I am an RPG fan in overall, but this one started all with the cool cast of characters, plot and awesome music. Of course, the rest of the series are cool too with honorable mention to Final Fantasy Tactics.
Shadow of the Colossus- Besides what has been said before about graphics, art style, environments, it was one of those games with such a unique experience and plus, who else found greatly satisfying in finding out by themselves how to beat the colossi? Plus the music is epic.
Metal Gear Solid series- Great characters and plot. I dunno about many of you, but this is one of those games I would played mostly for the complex and intriguing plot that Kojima has developed so far. The gameplay and graphics are cool too, but the character's backgrounds and plot is what hook me up on this.
Other worth mentioning include:
Kingdom Hearts
Psi Ops (crazy telekinetic ability and physics, that was really fun)
Katamari Damacy (does not only has an addictive and simple gameplay, sticky music, but is one of the craziest games I played)
Xenogears (most complex and deep plot in a RPG)
Zelda: Twilight Princess (IMHO took what made Zelda 64 great and took it way further)
Since a lot of people here enjoyed Shadow of the Colossus too, I became curious about what Team Ico is up to now. So I found in wikipedia that they are making a third game for the Ps3. Here's is the first image released of that, obtained from this website. (http://www.scei.co.jp/synthesis/career/wanda.html)

Ahh Guilty Gear. Lots of drinking parties playing that and Killer Instinct. Not really good with any of the characters, except for Chipp, who I massively kick ass with.

5. Super Mario Galaxy. Unbelievably entertaining!
4. Ico. Such a beautiful and sad story.
3. Okami. Artistic and giddy!
2. Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. Beautifully made and engaging gameplay.
1. Shadow of the Colossus. Beautiful. Need I say more?
You can tell I don't like overly violent games. :D

Oh, the typo was not what I was talking about. I was talking about the odd word placements. "Getting assraped by..." and "Teabagging eachother" Just doesnt sound good, no matter what context you put it in.

My top 5 =) (No particular Order)
Portal(PC)-Funny as hell. Short yet sweet with the best ending song ever. =)
Legend of Zelda Series- I like them all so I can't put a label on one. Link is just too cute<3 And the game play is fun for most of them. EXPLORATION!!!! =) Yes I also liked Majora's Mask! >=O I don't care what you guys that hate it say. I like it!
Final Fantasy 7 (PS1)- Aerith/Aeris is in it! she is my favorite character of all time and made me wanna work in the gaming industry, because she touched me so much. I want my art/characters to touch peoples hearts as well. =)
Osu!Tatakae! Ouendan!(JP-DS) I loved the first and second one. Fun games and the stories are very real and touching. I've played Elite Beat Agents and I hate the mini stories cause they aren't motivational like OTO.
Gitaroo Man (PS2)- Cult classic. This game made me cry when U1 finally believed in himself. He goes from being pathetic to someone who can stand up for himself. Still makes me cry to this day when I play it. Even though the story is very weird, the meaning is touching.
Games that were very close:
Guild Wars- THE ART! The art in this game strives me and motivates me. I want to be like them. I also love playing with my friends and they don't have an excuse like "I cant play because of a monthly fee" =P
Phantasy Star Online (GC)-My first online game ever. Lots of laughs and good times on that game. =)
Mystical Ninja Goemon (N64)- The super Robot theme in this game is so memorable and hilarious. XD
Kingdom Hearts-I loved the creatures and the music.
Chrono Cross- I loved the game up until the very end....disappointing ending. The music in this game is my favorite game soundtrack. The guy that composes the Chrono series music is a genius.

Mmm. I do believe its time I add more. My other three (and some noteable)
1. Deus Ex
Roleplaying + FPS + Awesome story, music and art design.
2. STALKER.
Umm. Its all about concept for me and this game. Its has massive outdoor landscapes beautiful world and ambiance. Oh. It also had some fantastic sound to boot.
3. F.F. Tactics.
Seriously. Its freaking FF tactics.
-Baulders gate - I love this game
-Homeworld - Homeworlds's story is still one of the best ones out there.
-Warhammer 40k Dawn of War - too many good things to say about this game, what makes me love it the most is that its modding community is a fantastic group of people who pour out the most impressive mods of any community I've seen before.

My top 5 hmmm
Call Of Duty 4 - Modern Warfare
One of the best games i've ever seen. The game really tosses you into the fight with huge scale battles to small stealthy missions. Even Mulitplayer is huge making most games seem like a joke. I have to give it a 10/10 in my book.
Elder Scroll 4 - Oblivian
A really don't play it anymore and compared to most games on the new gen it sucks but it is good for a good laugh or if you just feel like doing whatever you want. It almost would have been 5 if it wasn't for the fact i could use stealth 24/7
The Darkness
Ok this game has to be the most god-mod game in the world since unless your attempting to die you wont. The game is good for laughs due to the "Darklings" but it really doesn't match up with the comic and gives you little side story's that sorta make you say "Wtf?" but its good the light/dark factor is so big in the game also so you spean most ammo on the lights. But you will never be board killing your enemy with gun/super natural powers
LAIR
Its a new type of game using the control as a steering wheel. This game is hard to play unless your a hardcore video gamer. I liked the game its story line sucked since you can tell what will happen almost as soon as it starts. But flying a dragon to the enemy army and then landing and crushing them like bugs is always fun. The game has alot of graphic problems though.
Assassins Creed
I really wouldn't name this one due to the fact it is a "Play once but never ever play again" game. The games story was really bad since they made it around present time but you go into genetic memory to play as Altair the assassin who somehow is special. yada yada the game plays well but after you beat it you will most likely have it collect dust.
