View Full Version : don't look, pictures are too small and I don't feel like making them larger

EDIT: After looking at the Middle Class a little more closely, I have decided to post any future works there. I have also decided not to post a larger version of the pictures below because it is taking too long to upload them. As I have stated before (I think), I have next to no patience. Every time the upload takes more than five to six minutes, I feel like chucking my hard drive out the window. To save myself the expense of a new computer, I will wait to post the larger versions of these drawings when my DSL service starts in October. Then, if I haven't improved much beyond these sketches, I will post them in the Middle Class where they belong. If a mod feels like deleting this post since it doesn't really belong here, go ahead. Maybe you should leave it up so noobs know what size NOT to post their images:p. Oh, oh. I am rambling again. Let me end this edit before it becomes as long as the original post! See everyone in the Middle Class next month, hopefully.

First I guess I should tell you a little about my goals. I do a lot of different things, such as drawing (of course, or I wouldn't be here), various kinds of needlework, and writing. I like to do a little bit of everything without focusing soley on one skill since I have a very short attention span.

Unfortunately, because I have no patience, I went straight to drawing cartoony figures and my realistic work has suffered. Right now I would like to focus on learning how to make my artwork more realistic for my various projects. In case your interested, at the moment I am working on a children's book that I would like to illustrate on my own (if I can ever get it published), a counted cross stitch pattern, and a few T-shirt designs. With the present level my drawing skills are at, I have little hope of getting anything done. With hard work I hope to improve my drawing to the level that I can finish my projects and be able to show them to the public without embarressment for skipping the basics all of these years.

So here is where you guys who choose to read this thread come in. From time to time I will be posting my efforts as I strive to improve my skills enough to go to an art school. What I need from you is honest opinions. I don't care how harsh you are in your posts, I need it. Your crits will be my motivation to get off my butt and try harder.

My first pictures posted here will be studys from Figure Drawing For All Its Worth by Andrew Loomis. I have been working a little on bones and muscles. I know that my interpretations of someone elses drawings of human anatomy will not really help you gauge my skills, but there is no way I am posting my gesture drawings. I put no effort into a lot of my gesture drawings and they are of no use to you. When I have some that I really tried on like I did on the Andrew Loomis studies, I will post them here. On with the images. If you need any more explaination of the drawings, just ask although you shouldn't since I rambled on so much.

Below the first two drawings are links for darker versions as I am not sure they will show up since they were done with a 2H. Also, I have deleted any self-critiques on the pages. I want an honest opinion without any prompting from me about what I think is wrong.

These next pages are random scribbles. I didn't really look at the book too much with these and tried to draw as much as I could from memory. I think I like these drawings better. To me they have a little bit of a looser feel and I wasn't trying so hard to get them exactly right as I was in the above images. I think I used an 8B drawing pencil.

That's all for now. Sorry for the long post, but I have been trying to get the nerve to do this for a long time. Once I started, I just couldn't stop myself. I obviously have very poor impulse control.;) See y'all around!!:)

Shoot! I didn't realize these were so small. I will fix this as soon as I can. It takes forever for me to upload on my dial-up connection. Please try to be more patient than I would be.

Oh, if anyone has a good idea as to what the image size should be, please let me know.

daniela, scan your drawings in 72dpi or at most 96 dpi and size them to 640x480 - this will safe you upload time and will come out nicely on the screen.

Also, let me invite you to the Middle Class, where this sort of stuff goes and is criticised by people like you and me (don't expect to get crits from the pros for this kind of stuff, they've seen it ever so often). However, to participate in the class you've got to take the pains to "give", i.e. give crits to other people, too - only that we way can all learn from each other.

Thanks for the invitation jester. I think I may take you up on that offer. I'll just enlarge these drawings and then I just might put anything new into the middle class when I have it. I may not post anymore images until next month when my DSL starts, though. Even at the lower resolution, it is still a pain to upload using dial-up.
