View Full Version : Quick Sketching with Jason Chan
MassiveDVD

Hey guys... here's the final Jason Chan download (at least for awhile). Hope you guys enjoy it and we look forward to hearing your feedback.
Your client has a big cover illustration. You show him your brilliant idea in a tiny two inch thumbnail sketch. Oh cruel fate! The poor man is unable to extract the brilliant image sealed within your mind. You fail to get the job, which means you fail to make the money, which means you fail to buy a toothbrush, which means your breath stinks.
Enter the "Quick Sketch" (tm), a powerful tool used by artists to convey their ideas powerfully and without a lot of time expenditure. Short deadline? No problem. Want to make something cool in the two hours before your girlfriend comes over? Check and mate.
In this download, Jason Chan takes the viewer through the completion of two sketches, the first of which being his winning Thunderdome entry
at the Revelations workshop in Seattle. He won't tell me where the second image came from, but it does look like his own work (pretty much).
As usual, Jason delights the viewer with his discussion of both technical and non-technical apsects of art making. He also talks about
his approach to working on shorter images, which gets into the nitty gritty of what makes an image really work.
This is definitely one to get, unless you enjoy bragging to your friends about how many weeks it took you to render just the clouds alone!!
In that case, don't get it, because then who would you be?

This one was really great, and I agree with buhlerks, you should have more Chan vids as he really explains very well where he goes, what the reasoning is and what to think about. And that ontop of the rest of the stuff...
A question, mayhap more suiting for another part but since I got to think about it because of this video:
Jason is talking about how "these brushes are all massive black collected brushes, most by..."
It would be nice to get something like a MB master-brushset. Collect the brushes you guys are willing to let go and let us poor fanboys&girls have a go at them.
I got me quite a large library of photoshop brushes, and Im making my own, but sometimes there just is too much coolness about a brush you find to let it go, and it gives tons of inspiration to make your own, new, brushes after seeing something like that scales-brush of Jasons.
Just a thought that I wish you would make come true...
Jason, as always, kickass video. I'd love to put your brain in a jar and just extrude all that knowledge so I could get as good, but I guess it's the long way for me :P
(actual learning?! ;) )

Jason- Well I'd like to see this before suggesting an other vid. But off the top of my head if I remember correctly you did some "trailer/storyboard" type thing for I am legend? Would be great to see you use your skills in something a bit different than just the single images we've seen. Love all the vids so far many thanks!

Topic suggstion? I would be interested in seeing some approaches of capturing "motion/movement" like in a e.g. in a "fight scene"
or a character moving in a storming environment....whatever :)

Jason dude! this stuff ROCKS man!! love the part with the gun :D hahahah. cool!
Yes please do more demo on drawing hot chicks, that's always cool. maybe you could explain what your observations are on the female figure, eg huge tits are good, big eyelashes are sexier, long legs do this or that. something like that. or what ever dude. as long as it's rendering and chit chat about color.
speaking of color. Maybe you could do a quick demo on color theory??? i remember there was supposed to be a color theory vid but that ones does not seem to reach the final stage so...
anyhow, feed our brains dude!!! :D

Am I the only one who thinks it's wierd that on the CONCEPTART.ORG DOWNLOADABLE TUTORIALS AND EDUCATIONAL DVD's forum, there's one thread for Jason Chan - Quick Sketching, and one for Rich Doble - creature design,
while on the massive black DVD webpage, there's one video called Rich Doble - quick sketching, and one called Jason Chan - Thunderdome Illustration? I wanna know what I'm potentially buying here!

Yeah... I sent our web designer two descriptions at once and he got them confused. We're working on the fix ASAP... sorry! Anyway, the quick sketching is for Jason Chan, and the Creature Design is for Rich Doble.

So is the quick sketching the one with the girl-drawing-sword plus girl-suffocated-with-tentacles? Which one is the... other one with a girl and tentacles? The one with the pretty dress? How many Chan videos are there?

Download froze at 60% redownloading at 3kbps. This just stupid.
Finally got it.
Great vid. As said above, it was great hearing all of jasons thoughts as he was painting and it really helped to understand how he works.
What I don't understand tho is the blur technique.. how does he copy the image without flattening it? and how does he "erase" out without using the eraser :S

Wow! That's a really great video! My 3 favorite videos are Jason Chan's. I think he's the best teacher in the bunch. You see the guy with the long hair in the front with the black jacket on? That's me!
And for all of you guys having download trouble I don't know what's wrong. It only took 7 minutes to download on my computer.

Well, reading Takkik's suggestion for an Storyboarding vid and seeing Mr. Milligan's face just below it.. yeah that would be mighty cool!! What's the official statement on the idea? :) (wrong thread for that question probably, sorry)

to copy the image use 'copy merged' and the erase out uses a layer mask

EDIT: Actually, now when I try the download link it just says "Bad Request (invalid hostname)"

I bought this last night, and started watching it today. It's absolutely fantastic; seeing another artist speed painting, and hearing the tips they drop about the entire process, is incredibly helpful. I think I'll try doing one tonight. :)
Thanks guys!

Hey guys,
Coro's actually working on an AMAZING storyboard vid. It's mind blowing - there's no way I could touch that. So look forward to that! I also believe that there is a color theory vid in the works by Manley if I'm not mistaken. So both of those subjects will be covered.

Hey Jason, you've been a blast!
I got few things I'd like to see you cover :)
One of them is a male subject matter, and the other is presenting the work in black and white values. Your White-Wolf stuff comes into mind especially. I reckon there's quite a large diffreence pushing an image ready when working only in grayscale?

Thanks very much Jason, downloading now.
So far as the download speeds, I am downloading at over 1 MB/sec so it may have been a temporary problem for those with slow downloads.

This, like all the other Chan downloads is great, I can't tell you how much these have opened my eyes to techniques and processes that I may have already sort of been using, but I now understand why they work. Definitely builds nicely on the instruction in the previous two downloads, and Jason really feels like he's got into his flow as an instructor now, the advice is concise and informative and the tidbits of the things he knows and the inspirations he pulls on is almost as good as the technical know how.
It inspires me to paint more girls and tentacles, which is always a good thing!
And the storyboard download is music to my ears, it's such a barely touched on topic, and something I've wanted to be able to do, but have idea where to start.
I'd love to see a non-3d based environment download too.. sort of the environment equivalent of this would be brilliant.

Just downloaded and watched this bad boy, it was extremely helpful and extremely badass. I think I was really happy just hearing what Jason was thinking the whole time rather than just explaining to us what he was doing.
Really great job everybody, thanks to the Jasons and Massive Black, you guys rule!
My download stopped halfway like 9 times, the way I finally fixed it was with one of those download accelerator/manager programs, search versiontracker.com if you are in need.

This video is just what I want my money goes for, I have to say that. Awesome:D.
I personally think that this is the best video among all the Jason Chan videos I got so far. It's not only because there are two great tutorials, but more valuable thing to me is that how to squeeze out a paint in limited time. I love the Painter video too, but for a heavy Photoshop user like me, it's lot better that I can learn stuff about PS:P.
Thanks for sharing!

I haven't been painting for like 6 month because of a massive motivation break down. A couple of days ago, I started buying MB vids and guess what... :cheerleader:
Beeing a huge fan of Jason Chan I started with his videos and I especially enjoyed this one. It's just bad ass. He paints faces with too much ease. There Jason, you deserved it: :asskisser:

Just bought and watched this video. I find something odd...
Jason's brush strokes seems like he doesn't have the attribute "smoothing" on. He also mentions it at the end when he's signing his name. He says he wished that photoshop can track his brush strokes better. If he does have that on on his brush...then why does he get that jagged line? Wierd.
Good video btw. I love the first part. The result is nice.
Anywhere we can d'l some of those brushes he uses? I noticed some labeled as fine art brushes. Been wanting some brushes that mimick fine art brush types.
