Hey CA,

Been a while, thought I'd share with you some of the stuff I've been doing.
I better do so now since I will be swamped for the next few months as Art Director for Ignition USA.

I finally got to do something "Conan" related, now I can die a happy man. This is for the soon to be released "Age of Conan Board game" not to be confused with the "Age of Conan" video game.

I grew up reading Conan books and comics I was a big fan of John Bucema's Conan for the marvel titles. Of course the Frazetta Conans and early Boris stuff and B. Windsor Smith versions.

I'm not certain why this character appeals to so many male fantasy artist, maybe he is the poster child for "Male Testosterone" but for me Robert E. Howard created one the most iconic and darkest fantasy heroes of 20th century pulp literature and it is apparent by all the forms of media he has generated that the Conan machine is alive and well..

Reading those early Conan books and comics shaped my style of art even in genres like sci-fi and horror, historical etc. Whats amazing is you can look at history and say "yhea that guy reminds me of Conan" think of Hannibal who almost defeated the Roman empire and William Wallace or Shaka Zulu. Yes the argument can be made that these historical figures fought for greater causes and Conans were contrived by a writers personal ideals and imagination. However the translation of strength, passion and pure aggression is something we can all relate to in one form or another as artist. Art is war baby.

Every time I pick up a pencil or a wacom pen I go to war with a number of devils, the client devil, the personal life devil, the aging devil, the competition devil and last but not least the me devil. It's simply a matter of time as to which one will catch up with me and run me through.

Anyway enough chatter from me below also are variations of sketches presented to the client and some other illustrations and concepts.

best,
JP

awesome work

just curious...what size is the canvas in those Conan ones. There's so many little details in there, seems like it must be pretty big.

Awesome stuff. The first Conan image is nicely rendered. I noticed though that the armies on the battlefield are standing there doing nothing. It'd be nice to see the intensity of combat there. Maybe paint one group of guys fighting, copy and paste that and manipulate it to save some time.

JP,

You work is always amazing and you never, ever disappoint. That Conan piece is beautiful. I would love to see that sketch #2 worked up as well. The action in that piece is very compelling. Would have been nice for them to have you finish that and use it elsewhere on the boardgame somehow.

The lighting in those robot pieces is top notch. I love it!

Wow! It must have been an epic battle just to complete that first image!

I agree with your take on the Conan character too. There's a mythic quality about him that transcends generations. Your perception of those qualities emerges from your work. I think the most important place to start with an important work of art is to identify with the subject on a sublime level. You've certainly grasped that!
