This posting is ultimately for any talented artists seeking an opportunity to enter the comics industry. QEW Publishing is a small, creative, independent/international cyberstudio that produces original IPs (intellectual properties) as comic book miniseries and graphic novellas under an exclusive affiliation with Angel Gate (www.angelgatepress.com). QEW Publishing is currently seeking pencilers, inkers, colorists, and letterers to complete the assembly of creative teams for productions that will comprise its latest line-up of new comics for 2010. Anyone who is sincerely interested in this proposition may apply by March 31, 2008.

Are you paying and what are your page rates?

Hi there and thanks for responding with your inquiry. QEW Publishing does not contract full-time professional comic artists, but only artists, whose pursuits of a break in the business is part-time. QEW Publishing is comprised mostly of Independent Contractors collaborating under mutually agreed terms of shared compensation based upon the earned revenues of their collective works. If you're a talented and relatively unknown artist with a standard 9-to-5 job, but also a passion and talent for producing comics, and seeking a break into the industry as well, then QEW Publishing may be the place for you. If not, then you may have to defer to more highly established enterprises that are willing and capable of honoring your specific payment terms.

Warm regards,

According to CA's standards, this belongs to the non-paying jobs.

QEW Publishing does offer paying jobs, but under its terms. There are no per production page rates or advances available. Small freelance jobs is exactly what QEW Publishing offers. If you are a full-time professional artist that require page rates or advances then QEW Publishing may be unfit to your standards.

Respectfully,

This is not a paying job, this is a royalty based job, just to clarify things. Since amount of royalties is variable and there is a always a chance royalties could be zero this cannot be called a 'paying job'.

Wish you luck in your endeavors.

Sounds perfect... I'll be mailing you too. In the meantime you can check out my blog - it still needs a lot of work, but it will give you an idea of what I can do. http://berrijuse.wordpress.com

There is payment. What you are confusing payment according the terms I'm offering is a guarantee. I am offering no guarantees only opportunities. I will concur with you on no guarantees being granted for royalties, but there is also no guarantee that the art produced by an unknown artist compensated via page rates will make up for the cost paid by a comic producer like myself in comic sales and licensings, either. Artists are not the only persons who assume risks. Thank you for your thoughts, nevertheless.

Sincerely,

Quenton what you are offering is SPEC WORK as defined here: http://www.no-spec.com/articles/what-is-spec/

Spec work, as any freelance artist know, is bad business. Maybe it's not bad for exposure, for practice, but it's bad for business and I'm sure you know it. When you are going to print your comic I'm sure you are not going to tell your printer: "I will maybe pay you for the printing, the paper and your time after my comic is sold and only if it sells. If it doesn't sell well you are not getting any money. There are no guarantees'. You are not going to say that because you know no printer in the world would accept that deal, but you do it to artists because you know some of them, for various reasons can accept it. Nothing wrong with that if they accept the deal. I accepted the same kind of deal on certain projects BUT nobody ever tried to pass Spec work for paying work.
I'm not criticizing your way of doing things but the way you are SAYING them.
Just be truthful and you won't have problems with annoying people like myself.

After thoroughly doing some introspection and thought, I have to concede here in this forum and say that you are absolutely correct about the "non-paying" status of QEW Publishing's primary posting.

Concept Art's Freelance, Part-Time, and Full-Time Employment sections are specifically for jobs that offer "immediate" payment. It has been discerned that though royalties may be fairly construed as compensation in other circles, in accordance to Concept Art's criterion, it is not immediate payment. Therefore I will concede here that this thread has been accurately relocated by Concept Art's management in its current rightful category, Non-Paying Jobs.

I submit my most humblest of apologies to all of you who have inquired and have been so expedient and insistant in this correction. Now that I have attained a more clarifiying stance in this forum, I will continue to seek out hopeful new prospects here for QEW Publishing's endeavors.

Respectfully,
