DISCLAIMER

It appears that people are unreasonably averse to reading every single inch
of column space in here (gads!) and so haven't figured out that I left the
atelier quite some time ago. I'm not there anymore, and most of your questions
on the subject can be answered simply by clicking on that 'school' link up there.
Please go do that, I'm useless and can't be of much help.

The below is from sometime in 2007. Thus it is historical only. New stuff is at the
end of the thread. Thanks!

Hello!

I think it's about time I restarted my sketchbook. For those who don't know me (come on now, I won the Republican nomination in 17 states and the Democratic nomination in 12! Ron Paul ain't got shit on me!) I'm a foreigner of inconsistent origin - one of which is actually american, but we don't talk about that - studying at the CA Atelier under Grand Master Carl Ivan Dobsky III and a bunch of those people with the flashy banners up there.

So here's some pictures I drawed. I guess I'll upload some more later on, but wanted to get it started with some of the stuff Mr Chan has been holding me down and making me do. The agony!!!

Fanks!

Oh I should probably post the LMS round one entry. And then I should probably get my shit together and do round two. Post funny ideas for my consideration here, please. I'm just not that imaginative.

LMS3 Round One: The entry which let me get beaten by Chan (him again!!) but still somehow sneak through past far better entries:

Oh, before I go I should really quickly say a huge thank you to all the people who made it possible for me to cheat so fraglantly and get back in. And still major respect to Zephyri, Robogabo and Inverted Chalupa - the famous artist Mike Bierek - though he doesn't exactly have much to cry about these days.

Thanks again!

Yeah, it must be terrible for you, you poor b*stard. :D

I thought your LMS entry was one of the best - and definately the funniest. Work is looking fantastic. So it IS worthwhile studying under those guys.

Man, amazingly good work.
I bet you can slap those black and white sketches out like nothing.
But the main part of it is most definitely your coloring.

What programs do you use if you don't mind me asking?

Anyway, keep up the good work for sure. :D

Care to point out for an idiot how to paint on b&w digital sketches? Do you just paint atop a new layer or do you use some kindofmultiplicaftionlayer? I'm retarded.. and curious.

hey man good sense of humor, but i wanna see some more if you want critiqes. but i can critique you, get up and start posting or drawing DAMMIT. jokin. i see in the first few post, most of them you were playing around with the outfits they were wearing. but it seemed to dark to bring out the details. i would like to see some lighting in a few so i can make out a working image, at the moment i just see black shadows. but so far as compliments go, very good characters i see, keep up the good work. hope this helps ya out. :rocker:

The atelier is obviously doing you good your stuff was great before but seemed to lack a definite direction, now your skills seem far more honed. Cracking character work especially the colour and I really like the massive robo thingamy.

The only thing I found to crit is the girl under the gut, the shadows from the bloke fall in a way that makes the girl's chest look quite odd.

OK, so the policy in my old sketchbook was that I would never post without an image, so here's some ship thumbs I did months back for this Atlantis thing I've had in my head for a bit:

Paddy - i'll take a look at that! Cheers mate.

And as for everyone else, thanks a lot! It really does make a difference. And yeah, we should probably do another Atelier post shortly. I haven't taken any pictures of life drawing for six months or something silly and I guess it'd be good to show some of that stuff.

The Atelier's gone through many personnel changes in the past year and it's been sad to see people go. I'm definitely looking forward to meeting some new friends this year though, and Unbreakable joined us just this week. As well as Zach Oldsomethingsomething who is probably the guy next in line to take Whit and subsequently Mike Bierek's Ninja God crown. Some people just seem to piss art all over the rest of us :) Mind you Dobsky rains down on everyone just the same haha

ok ok enough bullshit, here's a picture.

Hello!

So, um, first of all, thanks to everyone for the kind words! Little overwhelming to be honest. I don't know if I can answer everything, but to answer a few things:

No, I don't have an amazing process for the thumbnails or anything. I guess it's kinda half way between the way Andrew Jones finds shapes (convergent, really, I found that his way of thinking is similar to mine rather than that I studied it) and the way Coro's taught us. Actually to be honest I bounce between pencil drawings in my sketchbook and black and white shape finding in photoshop. Often it takes a few rounds in each before I get the inspiration I'm after. For instance the big mech thing didn't work until I saw Cotron's chandelier in his new house and got an idea from that. Lots of dumb stuff like that happens really, and it's always the oddball thing that gets the job done.

As for the Atelier, well it's obviously had an impact. But one of the nice things here is that everybody's design sensibility has stayed very separate. In any studio you expect people to start looking like each other, but I guess the absence of clients has prevented that here.

It's really nice to see some old faces popping up, especially from the UK! Mario, long time no hear! Fran, Molly, Naomi I miss you too don't worry :) Um, absolutely everyone else thank you. And to be honest, my technique isn't really hammered out enough to do a demo. If you want a demo I'd suggest you pester Shamagim, cause he's got really fast with a slipstream method he's been using lately.

Oh, also, regarding the Atelier, I really can't give more info than is answered on the 'school' link at the top there. Except for two pieces of advice:

1.You have to WANT it. This is the main entrance criterion. Carl will not be easily swayed, let me tell you. And frivolous queries don't get much mileage . If you really want to come, you'll find a way to bend the universe round you and that'll happen.

2."Ah-telly-YAY". NOT "At-lee-air" or "Ah-tilly-year". There you go, now you know :D

OK so enough verbage. Thanks again to everyone. This is an illustration for the same nomad thing for Chan:

For once I can't even complain about a lack of updates hahaha.

February 29th, 2008, 03:50 AM
Good work all around man! On the last piece I think composition is lacking! You dont know If there going off the side of a mountain or what and the scene really seems compacted. The mountains don't seem to resend as much as should. I definitely think you could take it further. I see a lot inspiration pulling from InvertedChalupa designs.

Yooo DirtyC,

thanks for the comment at my sketchbook. Yeah, I was going to a community college, and Art center's night program. Just taking a class here and there. But I'll be studying Transportation Design (ID) full-time at Art Center starting in May.

I've gotta say, you've got some killer work.LOOOOOOVE your LMS entry. Hilarious, and awesomely executed!

Just wanted to say thanks for the kind words, means a lot. It was to push myself against guys like you and Aly that I joined this place. Great to see you get your chance in round two though!

The still life is deceptively great, your economy of brushstroke is just spot on, definitely something I've yet to master. And I envy you tonnes being at the CA Atelier, it really looks awesome.

Fab sketchbook, massively inspiring.

In these kind of drawings http://www.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=309922&stc=1&d=1203799351 you start with a solid line drawing and then you add the values? or just start painting the character and change it as you go?

Another one - sadly didn't have time to finish out the cloth. ALso the drawing sucks but I didn't spend much time on that as the exercise was the render.

Also I hate the stupid proof setup shit in PS. This looked a LOT better before I exported it and realised I'd once again failed to hit Command Y when I started. So the curves are all wack. Gah.

Cavematty
March 6th, 2008, 03:05 AM
Yo Dirty! Another great study. How long do you spend on these usually?
Also - what does cntrl-Y do?

I see the title bar for the image comes up "RGB/8/CMYK" suddenly! Is this some kind of pre-print setting I should've been applying all along but never knew about? Hate not knowing these things! Tell me TELLLLL ME!

March 6th, 2008, 07:48 AM
I love that artic battle painting, full of energy. The still life is awesome too, you really nailed the wood texture on the table top.

The only thing I'd crit about that is the near white reflection coming from the back part of the base of the glass. Since you're seeing that through one of the sides of the glass, I would probably try to push it back a little, so that it isn't as intense as the areas that catch the light on the front. Even on glass that isn't opaque, not all the light will get through the glass, so the parts you see through the glass aren't quite as bright as those you see directly (although they can be pretty damn close)

Anyway, awesome work, look forward to seeing more of it soon :)

Maestro Andres: The mask is from Sardinia. I don't remember which culture it's from - Muraghic....? but it's one of the pre-Carthiginian stone age civilisations. It's actually a donkey but looks more like a devil of some sort. It's from this awesome festival they have where one dude in the village dresses up like an animal and runs round messing with people's shit. They apparently go really nuts, too - like smash stuff and act like total dicks. But it's part of the festival so it's cool.

Big-Dave: Hm, thanks. I'll take that into account with further glass stuff.

Molly: Love ya sweetie. Get in touch.

Cavematty: Um, like 3 hours..?? And Ctrl-Y is how you toggle between your current colour management settings and the proof setup you have selected. A lot of people have trouble with their images getting desaturated when they export to jpeg. This is because the colour management setup for export is different to that on their monitor. It seems that the best way to correct for this is to go view->proof setup->monitor RGB. Then you have to go view->proof colors. This is the same as Ctrl-Y. You should find that your exported image has the same colour makeup as the original. The problem is, Photoshop won't let you have this on by default, and once again I sodding forgot to do it, so last night and tonight's images are once again screwed cause I had to fux with the curves to try and get it right after working on it for hours while not in proof setup. Yay gay.

Diego: Hey dude. Well, I bounce between line art and digital shapes a lot. I think I answered this elsewhere actually, but yeah it's a bunch of different attempts to get where I want to go. Sorry, no El Coro Technique to follow here :D

OK so here's tonight's one. We went to the deYoung museum today and I scribbled a bunch of shit, so when i get a scanner again I'll start posting sketchbook pages.

Cheers ears!

Gerraah I just posted this ad the values are all screwed up. I hate you Photoshop and your screwing up of my curves.

Hey dude GREAT update man... love the still lifes and the comp...

hope you don't mind me addressing this:

SETH1: We all had the same class and all had the nomad topic which is the reason for the thematic "similarities". As for being inspired by my designs? I absolutely couldn't disagree with you more...

see you tomorow dirty ; )

Hey C
Very nice stills.
On your composition, you seem to like to have objects to be just touching the edge of the pic frame. Is there a specific reason behind this?

Such great concepts! I love the great way the furred warrior and hi mount mesh together - they really are from the same, ice-aged world. Really interesting color schemes, too - nothing too pushed, really shows your grasp of light. Great stuff, altogether.

That bottle of linseed oil looks so slick... These still lifes are awesome! I dunno why you keep whining about the curves, they look great on my monitor :P I don't worry much about differences between pshop and web and other monitors... Probably because I'm lazy. It doesn't seem to affect that much unless I'm using a CMYK profile. But yeah no one else is going to notice a difference so don't be so worried about it, looks good from here :)

Perringalite - cast drawing training helps with values a lot. We all did really extensive value/form/light training at the atelier.

Dirty C
March 8th, 2008, 07:32 PM
Flipnastywebby: OK dude, here's some sketchbook pages :) The first few are from the other day when we went to the deYoung museum and I sketched a few awesome artefacts from a few different regions. Then there's some guns obviously, then it's a bunch of random doodles and early design stuff for Chan. Oh and some gestures.

Inverted Mike Bierek: Yeah, thanks for tackling that one. Seth1, the assignment was to show a nomad battling something else and to describe what was going on there. The fact that Mike and I both chose a snowy environment pretty well meant we were both gonna use leather, fur and of course snow. The direction we received was to make the beasts fit the climate, so we both ended up with furry animals. Other than that, if you can find any common shapes, I'd be surprised :)

PerinGalitte: What Nonie said :)

Jon Kian - nice to hear from you dude! Hope things are going well!

Congress is rushing these bills through to a floor vote. The House will start marking up their version of the bill at 2:00 today; the Senate will do so tomorrow. To try to stop this bill, we first need to slow down the race to get it passed.

FROM THE ILLUSTRATORS' PARTNERSHIP

Take Action: Don't Let Congress Orphan Our Work

We've set up an online site for visual artists to e-mail their Senators and Representatives with one click.

This site is open to professional artists, photographers and any member of the image-making public.

We've provided sample letters from individuals representing different sectors of the visual arts.

Thanks for the kind words everyone :D

Really wanna reply but we're under the gun again at school so I don't have time for anything, including not having time for the Eva stuff anymore. Looks like I'll get to draw plenty of sci fi stuff though which is sweet.

So here's where I was at with another doodle. Hope you like it and thanks a lot again (spesh Sam you silly northern lass)

Values are spot on in all these sketches, esp. on those EVA designs. Really like the head designs you were experimenting with!
