So I'm finally drawing up (haha, pun) the courage to start a sketchbook

thread of my own here. I don't sketch as often as I should, so I'm working on motivating myself to do just that by starting this thread. Besides, I need to swallow my fears of art theft and expose my work more on the internet.

Sorry for any watermarks, I uploaded some of these from my deviantART gallery, and image theft runs rampant there.

Work from this year:

Addresses the fact that the ancient Chinese used chemical warfare long before the Germans (many people believe the Germans were the first to utilize chemical warfare).

308377

308375
Global warming causes crazy cloud shapes XD

308373
A commission for a man of his wife and her favorite dog.

308372
Based on the old wives' tale, "If you go outside without a coat you'll catch a cold"

308376
Based on a dream I had about this tree that bore cube-shaped fruit. She's not an angel, she's a representation of myself (I can always fly in my dreams).

These are beautiful! Kudos. Great lines.
Perhaps the horse illustrates what happened to Atreyu's horse in The Neverending Story...

Concept sketches & character sheets for an original story I'm working on in my Illustration class. People.... are not my strong point. I definitely need to work more on drawing stylized people.

Forgive the repeating sketchbook background. I want to print these on aged paper to give that old field study feel, so in the mean time I threw on the background to get the basic effect.

Animal companion concepts:

The Regali are a species of my creation, and one will be a main character in this particular story. I hope to write a novel series involving them, as well. They were originally inspired by the concept of Asian unicorn mythologys but have developed drastically into something entirely different.

woah.. love your stuff! My favourite is the one with witches paddling with the sharks.. Ditto on the unicorns, very original and organic design going on there. Guess my only crit would be your facial anatomy could be stronger, then again as a conscious stylistic choice it gives the faces a real sense of innocence.. looking forward to more!

Thanks guys!

Oh, anyone know how to edit the preview thumbnail for a thread?

I'm scanning a couple of the prints I've done for my Intro to Printmaking class, so those should be appearing soon.

I've also revamped/worked on some of my previous concept sketches.

Nice stuff! Now post more! :) I really do want to see what else you've got. Your stuff is so charming and I really like looking at it. You have a real knack for drawing waves and clouds in a whimsical yet believable way. Love it.

I'd say do some more human head stuides. Your people aren't quite up to par with your creatures and environments. But they're almost there. It really just looks like they're a little more difficult for you so they're not quite as fluent as your other stuff.

MyOrangeHat, yeah, facial proportions are one of my weaker areas. :x

damn, that piece with the sharks is wicked cool. same with the one with the whales.
love your choice of colors
your human anatomy seems a bit wonky at times, and the poses seem a bit stiff too. i would work on that.

Glad to see you on the site. I like your work and you have some very dynamic stuff going on here. I would agree with the comments on the facial proportions and you mentioned that this is a weak area for you. The good news is that by drawing more this will be less of a problem. I also think that you could do well to gather a stack of reference material before you draw or take a few reference shots in the poses that you need before you start drawing. The key is to use the reference for the basic anatomy and structure and then go from there with your imagination, it will then become a new thing. Perhaps even drawing the figures out and working on the anatomy before hand on a separate piece of paper may serve as a warm up. I am not trying to change the way you draw but there are some strategies that you could add to your approach.

Keep posting and looking at the sketchbooks here, they are great for inspiration or to end the day, preferably after sketching.

You have some time before your senior show, nows the time to start this habit and get in the groove. Sites like this are a fantastic resource more of your classmates should be using it.

anyways I look forward to seeing more of your work.

Poster illustration for a mass critique hosted by my University where several art colleges/universities and their students, professors, and visiting artists participate. Unfortunately it was never displayed because the graphic design student hired to design the rest of the poster never fulfilled his end.

Thanks Em! Yeah, I was really excited to see an illustration of mine incorporated into a poster, so I was really bummed when it fell through. At least I was still paid though.
