I know that this thread has mostly turned into a mock-fest, but on a more appreciative note, the "The Dore Bible Illustrations" By Gustave Dore is amazing. 241 engravings depicting the stories of the Bible, old and new testament. Some of them are simply stunning: these are just some I found googling the book -

Lots of people say that they can't completely relate to the Bible, so things like this I feel are good so people can read it in a away that is appealing to them. I don't think it takes away from it's seriousness, I feel it's just like speaking in someone's language.
